S01.E01: Episode 1

Recommended Posts

I'm a big fan of the novel The Keeper of Lost Causes, so I'm happy to report that after one episide, that beside the geographical change, the show remains largely faithful to the novel.

Imdb says there are nine episodes? The novel is quite the page turner, I can't believe it took me more than nine hours to read it.

The Edinburgh location shots are stunning.

Before the episode was over, I was all in! I've read the novels and seen all the movie adaptations. Everything clicked. Matthew Goode is always excellent and nailed the role of the ill-tempered, Detective Carl Morck. I was not familiar with the work of Alexej Manvelov, who plays Akram, but he has quickly become my favorite. This show is off to a great start!

I like how they link the two stories from two different timelines. And the twist at the end is an effective hook.

I don't really like Moira. Carl should’ve called her out for misusing the budget allocated for Dept Q.

People can hate Carl all they want. At least he’s fully aware of how shitty he is to people around him.

Hopefully the dynamic between Carl and Dr. Rachel Irving could lead to something interesting. She is not intimidated by his assholeness.

If a show is going to have a captive woman who needs rescuing, I don't like to see the rescue dragged out to the end. I don't want to see scene after scene of her suffering, and no vengeance for a long time on the sick Fs holding her captive.

That was a wild twist, if it came from the books I'm sorry for the folks who were spoiled and didn't feel the shock that I did. It certainly isn't another New Tricks. With so many cold case shows it surprised me that this was presented as a new concept in policing.

I decided to give this is a try because I like Matthew Goode and because its set in and shot in Edinburgh, which I visited last year and I loved. I know nothing about the books so the twist at the end was a big surprise, I am so in for this show.

The main character is certainly an abrasive ass, but he's at least self aware of what a prick he is. Plus, Matthew Goode is such a good actor I still find him compelling.

Those shots of Edinburgh are gorgeous, I'm surprised that more moody mystery shows aren't filmed there.

Glad you're enjoying.  I finished the whole thing already, and it's all great.

I visited Edinburgh too a few years ago.   There are such long days in the spring and summer but really short days in the winter.  I suppose that might affect filming?
