S03.E07: The Shakedown in Clone-Town Job

Recommended Posts

I have to admit I didn't like this episode. First of the guy Sophie liked was so boring... I ended up fast forwarding some of their scenes. I may have missed stuff because of this.

The stuff with the con, was all disorganized and didn't seem necessary. I was confused about the point of the race track, fake identities to go with it.  It was obvious they just needed to have the town turn on the corrupt mayor. Actually it would have been interesting if there was no con, they just did that as themselves. Which they sort of ended up doing anyway.

I think the con being disorganised was the point. They went into it in a rush, without proper thought or planning - as Eliot pointed out - and as a result, Sophie read the mark wrong. Which was what the race track thing was all about: a misstep on Sophie's part, which she then had to walk back when she realised the mark had seen straight through her. She's fallible, after all. It wasn't a 'team at the top of their game' episode, but a 'team pulls the fat out of the fire after rushing into a job unprepared and overtired from another (off-screen) job.'

When Elliot gave his name as Lucas Newman, I actually had to pause and laugh for a few minutes. It made me wonder where the episode was going.

I liked that the bots for dating apps Breanna mentioned ended up coming into play in the episode.

@blueray I think the race track con was designed to be the thing that would get the town to turn on the mayor.

/small voice.  Is Lucas Newman a name I should know?  Is it someone in the real world who is a celebrity or something?

it was a messy storyline, but liked the episode   I thought it was hilarious that Sophie’s boyfriend was such a jack of all trades with all of his jobs

and Parker and Eliot were awesome as usual

The name on his license was Luke Newman, and according to IMDb trivia,

Quote

Eliot's driving license fake name, "Luke Newman", is a mash-up of the title character from the movie "Cool Hand Luke" and the actor who played him, Paul Newman.

The whole cop shakedown was a little much at the start. I know they needed to kick off the plot, but it was heavy handed.

I wasn't clear why Eliot was in the diner after the hearing. Did they just pay the fine? The judge shook them for only 1 grand?

You'd probably have to get any motion to replace the mayor seconded. The brother would have done it if he was voting in favor anyway, but still. I don't know if Eliot would be eligible anyway. Why couldn't they elect Ethel? That would have made more sense. Or appoint Ethel to be the judge.

I would have thrown the head bully in jail.

Good twist on the mayor not actually being greedy on the racetrack, and then Sophie just told the mayor they were going to run him out of town.
