S03.E10: Semifinal #1: Margaret Cho, Jackie Tohn, M. Kamau Bell

Recommended Posts

Oh, man, I'm torn between Margaret and Kamau.  I'd be very happy with either of them winning.

(I didn't see Jackie Tohn's game; I don't know her by name, and didn't recognize her face in a picture, but her credits include a couple episodes of The Good Place, so maybe I'll recognize her when I finally see her "in person".)

Oh Margaret! Don’t make that big a wager that late in the game!!

Gotta disagree on that! She had a very good record on dd’s so far.  Best that could happen, she was in closer contention for first place. Worst, she still gets $$$ for her charity.

Plus, for the celebrities, even if she you finish in the red, they give you more $$ to play FJ!

I was honestly surprised she missed it. I think the library part threw her off rather than catching on to the 'quintessential' Venetian vessel.

Quoting myself to say, nope, still don't recognize her.  But I like her charity.

Totally leaning into the "GOALLLL" shout was a lot of fun, especially Ken admonishing Margaret when she didn't play ball (and then she yelled Gladiator, LOL) so that was a fun category.

I can't believe "tie the knot" was a TS, or that none of them knew the "settle down" DD (normally we don't know if either/both of the other two would have known a missed DD had they landed on it).  And no one getting Edinburgh, with it narrowed down to two.  Islamabad also surprised, as did Buenos Aires.  Jupiter and War and Peace were the absolute mind bogglers, though.  Even for a celebrity tournament, at a semi-final level, I was surprised more than I expected to be.

Margaret was so dominant in her quarter-final win, I cheered her last-minute true DD, but, damn, fucking it up was a bummer.  She did not hear me screaming "gondola".  My cat did, and wondered what the hell was wrong with me.  It would have been interesting to see if FJ had come down to wagering, but good for Kamau.

Kamau was on fire! Congrats on his win!

That said, I was shocked by how poorly Margaret was doing up until the 3rd round. Her gutsy DD wagers helped her tremendously, but she answered incorrectly a lot, when she did attempt to ring in. I kept watching her intently, and it looked to me like she wasn't even buzzing in a lot. A lot of her wrong responses surprised me. Not knowing "gondola" was a head scratcher, but I  honestly think she wasn't thinking of vessel as a boat, but its other definition of a "hollow container", and couldn't think of anything.

Jackie Tohn was annoying.

I finally found time to catch up with this (stupid overlap with Amazing Race).  I was really rooting for Margaret!  Bummer about the gondola, but I did laugh when she wrote that down for FJ.  And I laughed when she shouted "Gladiator!"

But if Margaret couldn't win, I'm glad it was Kamau.

FJ was, surprisingly, an instaget for me.

I watched The Good Place and Nobody Wants This, and I don't remember Jackie Tohn from either show! But I liked her on CJ! and thought she played well (not so much in the game, but I mean socially) with Margaret and Kamau.

On Nobody Wants This, she played the rabbi's brother's wife, who hated Kristen Bell and her sister. It wasn't a big part, though, so it's understandable you don't remember her.

I was rooting for Kamau, but went into this round thinking that Margaret Cho was going to win considering how she wiped the floor with the competitors in her Quarterfinal. I'm so happy he won!

I hope he takes the CJ trophy this season and not just because I like Kamau. His charity, Donors Choose, would greatly benefit from a $1 million donation, after this past week's Supreme Court decision suspending millions of dollars in grants to teachers.

The episode was enjoyable, but I agree that Jackie was too over the top. I recognize her from Nobody Wants This, but she needed to tone it down.
