Haleth March 24 Share March 24 Excellent start. I was interested as to how they would characterize Mary. It may change but this Mary is quite demur and contrite. Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152322-s2e01-wreckage/#findComment-8615329
DanaK March 24 Share March 24 Given everything they had to cut to afford to make it, it looked pretty good and I could actually see things during the night scenes. Poor Mary but at the same time, it’s hazardous to go against your dad the King 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152322-s2e01-wreckage/#findComment-8615402

I don't know, that pomegranate was a bold choice. Methinks Mary might be playing long game. 1 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152322-s2e01-wreckage/#findComment-8615827
Driad March 24 Share March 24 Our PBS station aired "Lucy Worsley Investigates: Bloody Mary" just before this episode, so I was well briefed on Mary. 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152322-s2e01-wreckage/#findComment-8615851

CeeBeeGee March 25 Share March 25 Her heartfelt tears with Cromwell and that embrace with Henry--Henry loved his children (as long as they toed the line) and until the split started emerging between Henry and Catherine, Henry was a very loving, indulgent father who was very proud of Mary. I'm not crazy about the fairly recent Marian revisionism I see (burning to death hundreds of people for their religious principles is absolutely cruel, no matter how many people want to say "well, this person killed more!" Burning is one of the cruelest ways to kill people--I'd much rather be beheaded) but it can't be denied that Henry did a number on Mary. I can't imagine experiencing her incredibly privileged childhood--she was the acknowledged Princess of Wales, the heiress apparent at one point--and then processing the betrayal she experienced during her teens. He didn't even allow her to see Catherine when she was dying. Loved Mary's talking about her (full) brothers and sisters--she had a bunch of them, she was the only one who survived. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152322-s2e01-wreckage/#findComment-8616361

rhygirl720 March 27 Share March 27 Mark Rylance, my word this guy is so good. He expresses so much with just his eyes. Master class. Damian really does make a believable Henry. 6 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152322-s2e01-wreckage/#findComment-8618489

He has the perfect bit of sinister right below the surface all the time, even when he's in a good mood. And, he actually looks more like Henry than so many others. Mark Rylance is absolutely amazing. He really shows the dangerous world Cromwell lived in with just his face. 6 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152322-s2e01-wreckage/#findComment-8622116
GHScorpiosRule April 1 Share April 1 I just discovered this yesterday and binged through the first season! And I see a number of fellow posters I recognize! 👋🏼 to y’all! Or should I say ye all?😂😂 Claire Foye looked like such a baby -and it was a year later she shows up as QEII in The Crown! Ahem. That was the Awesome Harriet Walter as Lady Pole, right? RIIIIGHT?! She Played Lady Pole in STARZ’s Princess Trilogy! I LOVE HER! So many recasts with the new season, but 10 years have gone by. Disappointed Tom Holland wasn’t available to reprise his role. But why refilm Anne’s death? Why not ignore that Gregory is played by someone else? I counted a total of six recasts. Silly. I will give super credit to Damien Lewis for wearing a foam padding suit to show Henry’s obesity in his later years! Unlike a certain arrogant not as good actor* who refused to do so. Looking at you Jonathan Rhys Myers! *The Tudors. Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152322-s2e01-wreckage/#findComment-8622520
Haleth April 1 Share April 1 Hey, Scorp! Glad you found this one. With the several years in between seasons it’s not surprising that some actors would not be available, however the long wait made it hard (for me) to remember anyone except the brilliant Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis, and of course adorable Thomas Brodie Sangster. Incidentally the books this is based on are fabulous, superb writing. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152322-s2e01-wreckage/#findComment-8622662

I know. Didn't Thomas Brodie Sangster (too lazy to check) also appear as Peter Pan on Once Upon a Time? And they totally aged Jane Rochford by like 10 years when it's only been a few months since Anne's beheading! And I totally remember Rylance as a miscast William Kuntzler in NetFlix's awesome Chicago Eight. He was too short, for one thing! Kuntzler was super tall! But I digress. I'm trying not to compare this show (which is vastly superior) to the soap opera that was The Tudors, but the latter pretty much showed Jane Seymour as someone who loved Henry. And I'll clarify this in the second episode thread. But Oh My God--the outfits! I want to wear every one of them! Every time I see Thomas Brodie Sangster my first thought is of him as Sam, the kid with the crush on a classmate, in Love Actually. He still looks the same to me. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152322-s2e01-wreckage/#findComment-8622740
Haleth April 1 Share April 1 TBS is also in the delightful The Artful Dodger which I am thrilled is filming a second season. I never watched The Tudors because I thought JRD was so horribly miscast. Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152322-s2e01-wreckage/#findComment-8622762
