taanja November 26, 2024 Share November 26, 2024 Thanks. I notice the Duke is gone (from the title and the show) Makes me sad. I always liked the chemistry between the actors. Alas. The show went with the will they won't they crap which inevitably ends in disappointment. I wish they had gone with the "unconventional married couple of the 1880's that works together and solves crimes." There would have been plenty of conflict. Anywho ... I will watch to see what's the what. 2 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150844-s05e01-the-rival/#findComment-8518430

Maybe that will be for the best. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150844-s05e01-the-rival/#findComment-8518569

He probably left the show because they had written themselves into a corner concerning Eliza's and William's future relationship. Especially after they had the character Arabella say that Eliza will NEVER be the woman William wants her to be. So where were they going to go from there? The actor knew he'd be playing the same ole schtict so he opted to move along. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150844-s05e01-the-rival/#findComment-8519247

Actually, I think he got a role on another show (can't remember which) and the filming is in another country. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150844-s05e01-the-rival/#findComment-8519249
tv echo November 27, 2024 Share November 27, 2024 (edited) Stuart Martin is in Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver. It might've been a combination of both having another project and hitting a dead end with his character. I recall reading something about him saying that William and Eliza were at the point where they either become a bickering married couple or got together and then got pulled apart. Irlandesa December 1, 2024 Share December 1, 2024 I also think another factor is that this series used to film in Dublin which is closer to his home before moving to Serbia. Stuart Martin is married to Lisa McGrillis who is also an actress who works quite consistently. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150844-s05e01-the-rival/#findComment-8521589

It's too bad. There was SO MUCH potential in those two! 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150844-s05e01-the-rival/#findComment-8522677

Irlandesa December 8, 2024 Share December 8, 2024 I liked the first episode of the season. I like that the new detective is competent. I also like that his position against private detectives is due to poor experiences with them more than just not wanting to work with them or Eliza. I'm happy that Nash is back. I loved their last scene together and how quickly he understood what the Duke had asked of him. 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150844-s05e01-the-rival/#findComment-8527867
chaifan December 10, 2024 Share December 10, 2024 This was a good episode, a nice way to introduce the new detective. And I like that he is competent, was actually a few steps ahead of Eliza, but that she still had some information he didn't have. Now that "and the Duke" isn't an integral part of the show, I'm hoping that we can have a few episodes where the police department really isn't involved. Just Eliza doing her PI thing, hired by a real client, not given scraps by the police dept. I like how they're integrating Nash into this season. Of course he's able to use the warden's office at his whim and have guests. And I like that there isn't the "oh, it's disgraceful for a woman to be visiting a man in jail" type talk, that she just goes there and it is what it is. I like that Nash and Eliza are intellectual equals. I'm hoping that he gets released at some point, maybe gets early release for helping to solve a case or something like that. Orcinus orca December 10, 2024 Share December 10, 2024 Not bad but I sure miss the Duke's wonderful accent. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150844-s05e01-the-rival/#findComment-8529385

I will keep reading until PBS airs the show In Jan I signed up for PBS through Amazon Prime recently and the first two episodes are available. This happened last year as well. I watched the entire season before it was airing on PBS last year and hoping for the same this year. I watched the first episode and thought it was quite good, surprisingly so. I wasn’t planning to watch this show anymore but couldn’t resist checking out the first episode. If the quality holds I’ll stick with it. The new inspector is a strong character and I liked how he interacted with Miss Scarlet. I don’t love how the Duke was written out but I understand the actor’s choices. The show shouldn’t have dragged out the will they/won’t they stuff. But a common TV tendency I think. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150844-s05e01-the-rival/#findComment-8530240

sugarbaker design December 16, 2024 Share December 16, 2024 I like Blake, especially his voice. This was a good episode, I admired the non-linear timeline. Of course Nash is 100% more likable now that he is behind bars! 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150844-s05e01-the-rival/#findComment-8534255
HappyHanna December 25, 2024 Share December 25, 2024 So the new detective has a daughter and so a mysterious and tragic dead wife, I assume. But why would his personal effects (ie novels ie Treasure Island) be sent to his office? Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150844-s05e01-the-rival/#findComment-8540108
LisaM December 28, 2024 Share December 28, 2024 Really liked Nash/Eliza in prison. Noticed that Fitzroy now calls Eliza by her first name. The Ivy/Eliza relationship continues to be the most important one for me. Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150844-s05e01-the-rival/#findComment-8541761
