dwmarch October 28 Share October 28 It was heartbreaking when Oz told Vic "it gets easier". This is your life now, kid. You will solve problems with violence and as time goes on you won't feel so bad about it. Sophia is great with the quiet menace. The scene where she confronted Oz's gal was pure tension. I also loved the little moment of Sal cooking as a means of mourning and remembering. Sophia handing him the golf club was great too. These new Gotham mafia types may murder at the drop of a hat but they certainly know how to manage staff. 2 Link to comment
thuganomics85 October 28 Share October 28 Oswald Cobblepot, ladies and gentleman! Will torture you with pliers without breaking a sweat and then help you back out of your parking spot safely after. Man of the people! Had a feeling that the reintroduction of Squid was for Vic to get his first kill. Squid certainly didn't seem like a good person, but I can see how this will change Vic going forward. Especially since Oz assures him that it gets easier and will continue to dig his claws into him. Did not predict that Eve would assist Sofia after finding out that Oz knew that Carmine was The Hangman this entire time, and never told her. Oz's ability to burn bridges with those he claims to care for is quite impressive. But I worry for her if Oz does find out she was the one that ratted him out. Either way, great scene and performances from Carmen Ejogo and Cristin Milioti. Thanks to Nadia, Sal apparently can cook a lot more than just Krabby Patties! Oswald's plan to form a coalition with the poorer street gangs to take on the rich "elite" criminals like Sofia and Sal, seems solid enough, but I suspect it will only be a matter of time before they are at each others' throats, considering their histories. But it's probably safe to say Oz will somehow come out ahead. Things are certainly looking bleak for Vic and Francis! I'm sure Sofia will cook something special up now that she knows Oswald's mom is still alive and will probably be good revenge foil for what he did to Alberto. 1 Link to comment

rollacoaster October 28 Share October 28 I appreciate how tender Victor is with Francis. Understandably, he seems to be trying to build family after losing his own. He looks so much like a young Richard Pryor, he could definitely play him in a biopic. 1 Link to comment

Snazzy Daisy October 28 Author Share October 28 These are two standout, emotional scenes for me. Oz isn’t a good role model. He’s a narcissist but when he hugs Vic, there’s something genuine here. The contrast between the makeup, the dress, the jewelry to the dirty fingernails symbolizes their current situation. Despite all the money he has, Oz still couldn’t give Francis the life that she desires. Even during this vulnerable time, he struggles to provide the necessities (power, heat, round the clock care) to his special girl. 1 Link to comment

What if Oz was there? Where is her back-up team in case more of Team Oz is hanging around? It's dark, and up until just before Sofia shows up the power was widely off. Most people in Crown Point have bigger concerns than identifying strangers to the neighborhood. I would expect the average person in Gotham, let alone in Crown Point specifically, would only see a thin cute White woman and not necessarily say, "Oh, shiznit, that's the Hangman!" For reference famous pro skaterboarder Tony Hawk used to post quite a bit how even when given some contextual clues like him traveling with a bunch of skateboards people didn't always put the pieces together that he was famous pro skateboarder Tony Hawk. I also have no problem believing that Sofia has goons in the vicinity and that they will help her put the bag on Victor and/or Frances. I think that Frances has 0 percent chance of making it through the season alive. My prediction is that Vic gets beat up and left behind to let Oz know that Sofia has his mom. I still think Vic makes it through the season though. 2 Link to comment

Vic will be bloodied but alive so that he can tell Oz that Sofia and Sal have his mom. They'll use her as bait, which will lead to a confrontation that Frances (and probably Sal) won't survive. I'm still unsure about Vic. I say both he and Sofia have a 50/50 chance of surviving the series. Also, can someone clear this up for me. How did Eve know where Oz was staying? Isn't the apartment they're staying at one that was formerly occupied by one of Vic's friends? And that's why it's in Vic's old neighborhood? Am I totally making that up, because that's what I remember him saying when he took Mama Penguin there. And if that's the case, then why does Eve know where it is? Did Oz tell her and I missed it? I guess they wanted us to know that some time had passed but surely they could have gone another way. A bob, pixie cut, highlights. Anything but that horrible mullet. Crazy as she's been, Sofia has been bringing it style-wise. Well, at least until this episode. 3 Link to comment

I was operating under the assumption that Eve was making an educated guess about Oz's whereabouts because either she knows enough of Oz's backstory to know that he is from Crown Point and that he would go to ground there, or having met Vic and knowing that Vic is his ally suspects that is where they are. As I remember, the last face-to-face scene between Oz and Eve did not establish where he was going to be hiding out, but my memory is Swiss-Cheesy so I would not be surprised if he explicitly said where he was at some point. I may go back and check it out for a more definitive answer. Link to comment
dwmarch October 28 Share October 28 Oz tells Eve about the hideout in 1x05 at about 38:09. "We gotta lay low. Vic's already at Crown Point, he's got us a nice spot by the zoo." Eve responds "Crown Point?" and Oz explains to her that Sal and Sofia have no pull there. 7 hours ago, paigow said: How is she walking around Crown Point without drawing attention? Squid would have stopped her (well, it would have been funny to watch him try) but he's out of commission by the time she shows up. But I think most people in Crown Point are either doing their best to mind their own business or they do recognize her and keep well away. I also liked the detail of Vic hearing Sofia breaking the door down but since he's distracted by Frances trying to dance with him he only glances back. Between this and his earlier instance of sleeping while on guard duty, I'd say Vic really needs to work on being more paranoid. 17 hours ago, thuganomics85 said: and then help you back out of your parking spot safely after. This show hasn't been one for plot holes, so I was hoping that Oz had mentioned it to Eve and I'd just missed it. And yes, my husband and I laughed so hard at that line as the guy was trying to back out! Putting such a mundane phrase after the plier violence was brilliant. Link to comment

I thought that was what the dress-up scene was about, the pretty before the death, but I guess not. Now both Frances and Oz know that Frances is OK with death. Sofia may not have the prize she thinks she has. I like this show because it is "filling in white space" about a character I have known of since I was a kid, but never really knew who he was. I get that there are different takes on DC villains, but I've only ever really seen Bergess Meredith as Penguin and Danny DeVito. And those were pretty much live vs. any origin story. SO I'm digging the complexity here. Link to comment

Sofia may not have the prize she thinks she has. Frances' request was if she ever gets to the point where she's completely gone/in pain, Oz should kill her. Oz reluctantly agreed. So first of all, she's not there yet. Second, people's mileage will vary, but despite being able to kill in anger (Alberto) or for survival (Mama Maroni and Tai Maroni), I don't know if Oz would have it in him to kill for love. Yes, he promised Frances he would do it. But I don't think he would. Third, even if Oz is OK for Frances to die because she only has a little time left, it coming at the hands of Sofia/Sal and presumably being WAY WAY more painful than the mercy killing he would have arranged is presumably going to set Oz off. Don't disagree with any of that, and yet ... that wasn't my point. Oz has shown he will do what he needs to in order to win. That's one of the central traits of this version of The Penguin, that he is strategic and flexible and ruthless when he thinks that is what will allow him to win. So while I believe all of the points above may well be true, the point of my comment was, so what? If Sofia believes Frances will give her a hold over Oz, she may well be surprised, given what the show has already portrayed. It's not a big leap for Oz to say well, mom, you were headed for this anyway, we talked about it and wanted it, so while this may be a tad early ... I have to imagine that when Frances does get whacked, either she will tell Oz to do it so she can be proud of him, or Oz will realize he has to do it to win (and maybe Frances does, too, and says so). That seems to fit their relationship. Edited November 2 by Ottis Link to comment
