cmahorror October 24 Share October 24 Kathy Bates is a joy to watch - it is obvious she is having a blast with this role and I am having a blast watching her. Is it silly and unbelievable? Yes, but most courtroom dramas are. If I want realism, I'll watch Court TV lol. One thing, I get the feeling that Beau Bridges is already figuring her out. My spec is that he suspects that he has a bad attorney in the firm and will eventually call her out on who she is once he puts the pieces together. But he will not turn her in but help her in finding the answer. Also, agree it is the Olympia's new love interest. He is setting her up for a frame job which is why the cabin in November is so important - dude has something planned for that specific weekend which is why he requested it. Holiday weekend, no court, probably setting up an alibi for whatever he has planned. Again, all speculation, no clue if any of it is going to happen but I will be watching. 4 2 Link to comment

tennisgurl October 24 Share October 24 (edited) I liked the twist at the end and I am still interested in the overarching mystery, but a part of wishes that Matty really was what she said she was, an older woman down on her luck trying to start over again. They could even have the same mystery, maybe have it that her daughter fell into drugs and died which led to her marriage falling apart and her husband due to grief and struggling raising a grieving kid alone, it would give her story more stakes I think than having her have all of these resources to fall back on. Then again, its only episode two, so I am still waiting to see how it all plays out. I like the grandson alright so far, even with his silly acronym and magical tech powers, but he doesn't really feel like a kid who tragically lost his mother to drug addiction and also apparently doesn't have a dad in his life. Sure, he has his loving grandparents and a stable wealthy home, but you would think he would treat this as less of a fun game. The case of the week was pretty predictable, I knew it was the kids friend the second he showed up, but I did like the way the case played out and how often Mattie playing the "nice old lady" case Miss Marple style. My favorite things right now are how much fun Kathy Bates is having, the two junior lawyers adding comic relief, and Beau Bridges and Kathy Bates playing a very folky amicable game of cat and mouse. I'm still having fun. Edited October 24 by tennisgurl 3 Link to comment

The two junior lawyers are pretty interesting themselves and I like Matty’s interaction with them. And it’s so interesting how Matty uses her little old lady act and how it so easily disarms people, plus seeing Beau’s character and Matty circling each other 4 Link to comment
basil October 25 Share October 25 Quote I didn't like the revenge twist last week and now dislike it even more after this episode. It's such a cheap and easy plot device, Yeah no. Big Bad Pharma! 3 1 Link to comment

So why do they have to go the secret identity route? All of this! Of course the first season of Elsbeth had the lead character's underlying motives, along with the consent decree, but she gave that up right away, and it's such a light-hearted show that it works. Mattie has devised an entire secret identity in order to punish the people she blames for her daughter's death. She's so traumatized she uses her wealth, power, and legal skills to lie to the people she is pursuing. If there's a fictional counterpart, she's more like a senior Bruce Wayne. And yes, Kathy Bates is acting the hell out of this part. The grandson is pretty bad. I know kid actors often don't have a choice about going for roles, so I generally don't criticize them, but this one really can't act. And I am so tired of kids being computer geniuses who can do all kinds of things that adults can't. That went out early in the 21st century. I hope this show sorts itself out. There are some good actors trying to work with a truly hinky foundation. I mean, you don't get a TV show with Kathy Bates very often, so I'd like to see it work. 4 1 Link to comment

When Maddy opened that apartment door, I was so surprised and relieved. Her nice car and chauffeur delivered pizza to her husband. Loved it! I wasn't relieved. I was hoping she would get outed and we could end this whole stupid subplot. I like the current cases and watch for that, but wonder when I'll get so disgusted with her revenge and her "I'm old and misunderstood and so sweet and innocent" schtick, I'll quit. It comes off so smarmy to me. I like when she's competent and works with the others. Hate the revenge plot. Hate when she manipulates her coworkers. Edited October 26 by Johannah 5 Link to comment

That part of the plot came straight out of My Cousin Vinny. I just kept waiting to hear, "How long does it take to cook a grit?" 5 Link to comment
