The acting by this Ripley has been excellent. Everyone else seems to have been directed to “speak your line, smile, then stare suspiciously” 

it’s beautifully filmed, but very drawn out. I feel like half the show is watching people climb up and down stairs.

It doesn't bother me, it seems to ratchet up the suspense.  This feeling of dread, of the authorities closing in on Tom, escalates with every step.

The stairs, and the constant footsteps of hard leather-soled shoes on hardwood floors and cobblestones!  I would hate to live in the apartment under him!

And I can imagine the casting call for dozens of innkeepers:

Loved the inspector going to visit Marge, getting exhausted going up the stairs, and then sending his minion to fetch her the next time.

I think half the innkeepers are excessively perky and not suspicious at all.

An awful lot of stairs.  And the suitcase must get heavy, especially with a typewriter in it.

by now it’s strange nobody suspects what has happened. 
 

but it’s gorgeous to look at.
