Name: Hannah Rose
Age: 33
Hometown: Woodbridge, CT
Current Residence: Baltimore City, MD
Occupation: Therapist

3 Words to Describe You: Enthusiastic, passionate, authentic.

Why do you want to be part of Survivor? I want to push myself as much as I can — physically, mentally, and emotionally. Survivor is my favorite show and I want to be part of it!

What's one life experience you feel has prepared you for the game? Being a sleepaway summer camp counselor: living with sometimes difficult personalities, intense competition, and the feeling of family away from home.

Which previous player do you identify with the most? Who do you think you will play most like? I identify with Aubry Bracco, and hope I'll play just like her and Kelley Wentworth.
What will you value in an alliance partner? Someone I can tell is being authentic with me and able to have fun so it's not nonstop intense!

Favorite Hobbies: Musical theater, Peloton, anything with my dog Ralph.

Pet Peeves: Loud chewing, narcissist-types.

What is the accomplishment you are most proud of? Getting sober when I was 20 years old.
What is something we would never know from looking at you? That I'm a therapist and founded and run a group private practice.

Who in your life is your biggest inspiration and why? My friend Rishi, who is on a Broadway national tour of Jagged Little Pill and is incredibly brave and wholehearted. Also, Brené Brown.

Why will you be the Sole Survivor? I can read the room (or the island), pick up cues, lay low when I need to, but be cutthroat when the time comes. And I can do it while being as real as possible, and bring comedic relief!

I wonder if this was a summer camp at a Four Seasons Hotel resort?

I'm sure there's been a lot of anxiety for Hannah building to the moment of her quit, plus all the hate she's getting (at least what I saw on Twitter).  But I hate quitters.  She's lucky that Probst has come a long way from Osten in how he used to treat quitters.  She seemed ready to quit on the boat ride to the beach.  It's just sad she took someone else's spot that actually wanted to be there, but I'm glad she bowed out first, and didn't take the opportunity away from the others out there who actually want to compete.

I just know that while I love Survivor and think it looks like fun, I'm perfectly content with my luxuries at home to ever think of applying.  I'll just be a couch potato observer.

I think she should not gone onto the show still addicted to nicotine.

I know it's a really hard thing to try and quit.

All of my family besides me were heavy smokers and they were nervous wrecks (and crabby as hell) when they tried numerous times to quit.

Don't they have nicotine gums and patches and maybe some prescription to help quit nowadays? Why didn't she plan for this ahead of time?

Instead she took somebody else's spot.

I remember in some earlier Survivor seasons, there were smokers and they had patches on.  I don't know if that's allowed nowadays or if Hannah didn't think she'd need it.

This reminded me of Shane during S12, who about lost his ever-loving mind from nicotine withdrawals.  I think what might have saved him was his tribe won a reward to go to a local village, and he bummed a smoke off of someone.  Now that I was surprised the show would allow.

Exit interviews from Hannah:

https://ew.com/tv/survivor-45-hannah-rose-quit-interview/

-she said it was a combination of sleep and food deprivation and nicotine withdrawal that made her want to quit (especially the food part).  Because it was brought up, she said she had nicotine patches and that she actually vapes

-she thought going to the challenge might give her the adrenaline rush she needed but she said she felt nothing

-says anyone sending her hate would never get on the show because they wouldn't pass the psych evaluation

-said her tribe wasn't going to vote her out at first despite her asking them, and even at TC when Jeff asked the first time, everyone said they weren't voting for Hannah.  Sabiyah even said they'd vote Hannah off when they were ready.  That's when she pulled out the 'I don't need you guys to vote me off to leave.'

-she doesn't regret going on the show nor does she feel like she stole an opportunity from anyone.  But she did realize how much her tribemates wanted to be there over her, and thinks she would have taken an opportunity away from one of them if she didn't leave

-she talked about the twist that didn't make the cut.  I posted about it in the episode thread, but basically, the first tribe to win immunity (Belo) sent an ambassador to the losers camp.  And that person was able to secretly cast a vote for someone on that tribe at TC.  It didn't make the air because Hannah quit (it was Kendra, and supposedly she voted for Brandon).  Apparently Kendra was actually at TC with them.

-she said after they lost the IC, Kellie looked over at her with a sad expression.  Hannah said she was smiling because she knew she was leaving

I don't know how much of a fan she is IMO as she doesn't acknowledge that someone else could have been selected who would not have wanted to quit.  I dislike quitters, especially as it throws a wrench into all of the strategies and alliances the others have made.

I guess the lure of being on t.v. was strong.  Oh, and her comments about people being critical of her not getting on the show?  What, does she work for casting?  What a think to say.  Jeff would probably want to cast someone who criticises a quitter.

I would probably like her in real life, but quitting before a week is even up just seems like she didn't really want to put in the effort.

Has anyone else ever quit this early into a season?

SO glad Hannah bears absolutely no responsibility for any blowback she receives from her actions; I was worried there for a moment.

I don’t think Hannah was on the island long enough to find out where the camera crew kept their coffee pot, much less form informed opinions about casting.

I'm just wondering, what would she have done if she hadn't landed on Survivor's equivalent of the Bad News Bears tribe?  What if her tribe won?  Would she have stuck it out, or would she have told her tribe she wanted to quit before the first TC so the other tribe got lucky and didn't lose anyone?

I checked a couple of other interviews but couldn't find if she was asked this question.  Most of it just focused on her quitting (though she doesn't seem to like to refer to herself as that, and likes to think she was technically voted off).

Oh come on, Hannah. Own it.

Though I guess she didn't even use the word "quit" when she said "I don't need you to vote me out in order to leave"...did she?

I think she thought her tribe would abide by her wishes and vote her out, and realized pretty quickly that wasn't going to happen.  I don't think she wanted to use the "Q" word.  This is how it went in the EW interview:

Quote

Technically, it's not a quit. It was at Tribal. Let's just own that.

Jeff says it's a quit.

Well, semantics. I still love Jeff, even if it's not reciprocated.

I mean Osten, Naonka, and Purple Kelly all left at tribal, too. I respect her decision to leave when she felt she needed to, but this attempt at face-saving isn't doing her any favors.

It is kind of weird that as a therapist she seemed unable to recognise that she was psychologically unfit to be a contestant on Survivor, given she was unable to withstand a day or so of hunger and some uncomfortable sleeping arrangements, which is all an obvious part of being on Survivor. Also, that she shows little accountability for her unpreparedness here.

I spent years being mad at Osten for quitting, then a few years ago, Savage mentioned in an interview that he actually had a staph infection most of the time he was there. Now I'm impressed he held out as long as he did, and wondering why medical didn't pull him from the game  If that's true, we really shouldn't be grouping him with the Hannah's and Naonka's of the world, and he probably deserved a second chance.

I was thinking about Naonka and Purple Kelly and how Hannah got a really good edit compared to both of them. We've all long speculated that the reason why Purple Kelly was invisible all season was because the show was punishing her for quitting, which they couldn't do with Naonka because she was central to so many of the game moves that happened. Not that Naonka wasn't a terrible person because she was, but they sometimes give the terribles a good edit, and they didn't with her.

They showed Hannah being whiny, but it paled in comparison to Brandon. She said at TC that she cried more than anyone out there and no one disputed that, which means she cried more than Brandon and we never saw him do much of anything BUT cry. Someone else pointed out to me that she also looked impeccably groomed the entire time she was there, so she couldn't have been doing much of anything in terms of camp work. I don't know; maybe they gave her a decent edit because they wanted her quitting to be a surprise twist. It was for me; I was certain it would be either Brandon or Emily leaving, and Hannah didn't even seem like a possibility.

@fishcakes I thought Emily was leaving in a predictable boot, and that Hannah talking about wanting out of the game was a red herring (right up until she said ‘I don’t need you guys to vote me off to leave’).  But the way her and Brandon bonded I thought was the start of an alliance for them, or at least some heart breaking decision for her when the tribe voted Brandon off.  The way Jeff was harping on ‘this is what you signed up for’, I figured that’s where it was going with Hannah.

I’ve seen comments about the difference with how Jeff treated Osten over Hannah, though there’ve been other quits in between that Jeff was pretty soft too.  I think Osten, Purple Kelly, and Na’Onka get the most attention because of the type of quits they were (Osten was the first, and the two girls quit together and caused controversy because they were allowed to stay on the jury).

On the podcast, Rick Devins and the co-host Jay asked Peachy why he was so much softer on Hannah than he had been on previous quitters, including the OFQ.  Peachy said it's because of social media...but not necessarily for the reason you think.

Today's audiences can tweet how they feel about someone quitting to said quitter as it's happening on the show.  But back in the day, they couldn't.  We could only discuss and rehash after the fact...like we do with everything on the show.  So Peachy was playing "audience stand-in" for those times; expressing in "real time" to the quitter how upset viewers would be about them quitting.  I can see where he's coming from with that, and I don't totally disagree.

But there's probably another reason though.  Peachy's older and a father now.  He's mellowed to a degree, and likely wouldn't want to hear about someone treating his kid like he treated quitters in the past.
