Sony Confirms Spider-Man vs. Kraven Movie Crossover Plan

Sony Pictures shared the official synopsis for Aaron Taylor Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter, and it confirms that Sony has early plans for the villain to eventually go up against Spider-Man.

“Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film.”

But will it actually happen?

There’s no telling yet. After all, so many people involved with the Venom movies have tried teasing the villain’s inevitable crossover with Spidey, but nothing looks to be coming from it so far.

Though, Sony has potentially made some blatant in-universe teases.

For one, Kraven’s silhouette can be seen in the sky during the chaotic finale of Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the Kraven trailer, a large number of spiders can be seen descending onto Johnson’s villain—clearly a nod to his rivalry with the iconic arachnid superhero.

Whether it happens or not, Sony is certainly thinking about it.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven The Hunter debuts opening scene at NY Comic Con

Sony Pictures has given us more glimpses of Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Marvel's Kraven The Hunter. At this year's NYCC, Director JC Chandor took center stage, unveiling new images and the first seven minutes of the film.

Spoiler

The R-rated film kicks off with Kraven entering a Russian prison. He tells his new cellmate he'll be there for three days. But things heat up quickly – the next day, Kraven gets into a prison brawl, showing off his superhuman strength. This lands him in front of the prison boss, who turns out to be an arms dealer. In a brutal turn of events, Kraven kills the boss and his men, then escapes “with some cool parkour.” Another clip Soto described as “bloody and brutal” shows Kraven creatively dispatching men using a bear trap, tree stump, and other makeshift weapons.

Taylor-Johnson, donning the iconic Kraven coat, gave the crowd some insight into his character. “He's an apex predator, the top of the food chain. Kraven is a hunter, not a poacher. Like every hunter knows, sometimes you have to cull the herd to preserve order. Of course, when he starts applying that to human beings, it becomes a pretty dark story.”

Box Office: ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Aims for Weak $15 Million in Opening Weekend

The comic book spinoff, set in Sony’s universe of Marvel characters, is targeting a paltry $13 million to $15 million from 3,200 theaters its opening weekend. Based on projections, “Kraven the Hunter” could contend with February’s misfire “Madame Web” ($15.3 million debut) for the ignominious distinction of the lowest start among Sony-produced Marvel adventures. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the eponymous antihero in the R-rated film, which faced a litany of pandemic and strike-related release date delays on its long and winding journey to theaters. “Kraven” cost an upward of $110 million to produce (it was greenlit for $90 but ballooned after last year’s writers and actors strikes), which ended up being considerably more than the $80 million price tag for “Madame Web” but far less than rival studios like Disney or Warner Bros. typically pump into superhero tentpoles. “Kraven,” the first in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe with an R rating, was co-financed by TSG.

A handful of people loved the film, and while the majority of the reactions are definitely leaning negative, the gruesome violence and action scenes do seem to be a big selling point. The script, acting, VFX, and pretty much every other aspect of the movie?

How Kraven the Hunter does (and doesn't) connect to the MCU

But how does Kraven the Hunter connect to the MCU? It's not officially part of the long-running shared universe, as it's reportedly the final standalone villain film in the separate Sony Spider-Man franchise (which includes Morbius, Madame Web, and the Venom trilogy). We never see (or hear about) Tom Holland's Peter Parker (or any other web-slinging hero). And there are no post-credits scenes that tease connections to future movies in either universe — despite Taylor-Johnson telling Entertainment Weekly that he sees "longevity" for the Kraven character. But aside from a blink-and-you'll-miss-it Daily Bugle sighting, there are multiple references to major Marvel villains throughout the movie, some overt and others much more subtle (for better or for worse).

If you're keeping track, that means Kraven the Hunter either shows or teases six villains who have been in some form of the Sinister Six villain group in the comics. So if we never see an official Sinister Six live-action team-up movie after years of Sony's failed attempts, at least we kind of got it in Kraven the Hunter?

From the first trailers that looked fine to me I was going to see it but was travelling during the short release run. So I held out to see which service would get it.  It was fine, nowhere near the worst of comic movies. Perhaps turning a villain who hunted an other than human Spider-Man, in the books he was not a known "mutant" but people had to suspect him was in the weird Marvel species bigotry, into an anti hero turned folks off?

The first hour origin of a land Aquaman without a kingdom behind him going after poachers which lead to other types of criminals. The Punisher with Captain America's helicopter holding strength.  That was unexpected as was the Rhino and others with powers.

Being able to watch at home made for taking an intermission break about the time Kraven went to Turkey.

This wasn't something we would make an effort to see at a theater .. but not so bad for a streaming option.
The most annoying thing about the movie was the dialogue - really bad - and very  forced.
It also seemed as if the writers had just learned about foreshadowing, but without any subtlety: This tarot card says you will give this potion to a boy.  Later, Calypso says she has hidden archery skills - which pays off five minutes later.

Considering the anti-Poacher and big game hunting angle, the Rhino makes sense. But the Foreigner character felt like an unnecessary additional super-powered adversary.

All the elements were there for a good action adventure - but the filmmakers made some really odd and convoluted choices.

I had no idea who Kraven was, as I am not a comic book reader.  However, i have enjoyed most of these comic-book hero and anti-hero movies quite a lot.  I had no idea that Kraven is supposed to be a villain and frankly after watching this movie I struggle to see how he that was so.  Clearly there was a complete rewrite of him if he really was a villain, as certainly these days, just about everyone would think someone who hunts poachers (and other criminals) is not going to be a villain. i'll have to look up why or what made him a villain in the comic books.

obviously there's some hint of his thing against spiders which i suppose would lead to his eventual opposition with Spiderman? i guess?  but no explanation is provided, so no idea why.  Morally, they don't seem on opposite sides.  .

I really enjoyed Aaron Taylor Johnson, i've liked him in several movies.  He did a good job with what he had, and so did Ariana DeBose.  Calypso was clearly underdeveloped, but this wasn't her movie.   the script definitely could have been better, but the movie was much better than Madam Web and Morbius, about on par with Venom, imo.

the action sequences were really good, well, yeah the animal parts were kinda meh, but the people fights were cool.

Notice how the hunting guide explains himself as doing the work feeds his family and papa Kravinoff as a trophy hunter was bad. Comics Kraven was a trophy hunter and hunting Spider-Man was Marvel publishing the most dangerous game in comics form. I know Spider-Man wasn't known to kill but he could get webbed up and sent to jail for a little while for losing.

He would be like someone who would hunt a wild boar with a knife not shoot from a safe distance for the meat or conserving the native wildlife from an evasive species but just the thrill of beating the boar to kill.
