Whew. I just finished watching this. What a sad tragic mess.

So did Anna Nicole grow up in Houston or Mexia? Her mother said Houston but her uncle said Mexia.

Poor Anna. Her father was a disgusting POS. Was side-eying her half brother who’d just said his father was a rapist. Then attempted to deny his father tried to assault Anna but then turned around and admitted it was possible. Sometimes an absent parent is absent for a reason. Also, meeting a parent for the first time in 24 years almost never ends well.

Interesting that Mr. Marshall was banking her Hollywood life and success. And when he died there was nothing, no money, no protection, no nothing.

Of course her drug addiction didn’t help. You’re only bankable if you’re a functioning addict. The minute the celebrity goes off the rails they’re dumped by Hollywood, which at the end of the day is understood as they’re running a business not a rehab.

Howard Stern’s pool about her weight was disgusting. When she lost the weight for TrimSpa she was too small. She looked better when she was heavier ie when she modeled for Guess.

The revelation about Larry Birkhead was shocking. I knew they weren’t these star-crossed lovers like he always claims. But her assistant went so far as to say she couldn’t stand him and she wanted him to leave her alone. Dam.

Bottom line she was a tragic mess. Sadly, the best thing that could’ve happened to her daughter MAY have been Anna’s death. Harsh. I know. But look what tragically happened to Daniel. Poor kid never had a chance. With Anna’s addiction issues, which seem to be the main source of her problems, Dannielynn was destined for many hardships if raised by her mother. Her life with Larry Birkhead seems stable. I hope what seems to be for her, is true. Hopefully her life will be vastly different (more productive and positive) than her mother’s life.

One last thought, did anyone think Howard K. Stern’s sister stopped short of revealing he was gay when she talked about him not having a relationship with Anna?

Wow! I'm not quite finished watching this, but I have to say whoever put it together didn't put much research into it. It's like they interviewed some of Anna's sycophants and took their word as gospel.

None of them mentioned why she ran away from Larry Birkhead when she was pregnant. It wasn't because she hated him, he was living with her and they were making plans for their life with the baby. Larry wanted her to get clean. He stayed with her when she was in the hospital detoxing from the enormous amount of methadone she'd been taking for years. When she decided she'd had enough, Howard Stern brought her dope to the hospital, she checked out against medical advice and ran away to the Bahamas. She believed Larry would leave her alone and the Bahamian law that whoever signed the birth certificate was the legal father would be enough to keep him away. But, Larry wouldn't let it go and a really good attorney represented him pro bono to help him fight for his kid. He knew how bad her addiction was and how Howard did everything he could to keep her high and he didn't want his baby stuck with them.

The people saying how horrible Anna's mother was and how much she hated her are also not based on facts. All of the years Anna was working at the strip club, her son lived with her mother. When she went to California to work for Playboy and Guess, Daniel lived with her mother. Daniel didn't live with her until she moved to California after J Howard Marshall died and she got the show with MTV. If her mother was such a monster, why did she leave her son with her for years? No one in their family backed up her claims of her mother abusing her and her friend has said that the stories she would tell people were actually what the friend confided in Anna of what happened to her as a child.

Daniel was not a drug addict. When the guy said Daniel was high on his mother's methadone and wanted to do some cocaine, I really got pissed. There is absolutely no evidence that Daniel was a drug user and he hated what drugs did to his mother. He was known to be very anti drug. No one will ever know for sure what happened to Daniel, but what makes sense and what has been theorized is that he accidentally drank his mother's soda at the hospital. It was well known that Anna took liquid methadone and mixed it in whatever she was drinking. She had an extremely high tolerance and her normal dose would have been enough to kill anyone with no tolerance. Daniel had a huge amount of methadone in his system and methadone intoxication was his cause of death.

J Howard Marshall gave her millions of dollars while they were together and believed with the homes and jewelry that she'd be able to be financially fine when he died. He specifically said she wasn't to get anything more than he'd given her. But, she squandered it on drugs and a lavish lifestyle and that's when she sued his son. None of the lawyers that worked on that case for years and years ever got paid. Howard Stern was not the main attorney on the case, it was a large firm that started it long before he was ever in the picture. Howard is now working as a public defender in California.

On a totally snarky note, Bonnie Stern has had some major cosmetic work done. If you can find pictures of her during the time around Anna and Daniel's deaths, she looks like Howard's twin, only with big hair. If they hadn't said she was Bonnie in this show, I would have never known who she was. She has a completely different face!

I think everyone who was saying her mother was horrible said that’s what Anna told them about her mother and that she hated her. It wasn’t their conclusion but what Anna told them.  I wondered about Daniel while she was dancing. It makes sense that her mother would’ve been taking care of him. The documentary implied her friend, whom she’d met while dancing, moved into her house and took care of Daniel after Anna’s career took off and seemed to be her live in babysitter/assistant for years until the relationship collapsed.

Regarding Larry Birkhead, I never knew he was with her early on in her pregnancy. The impression I got from his own account of the relationship was that they messed around a few times before she ghosted him. From this I came to believe the relationship was not the love story he has claimed it was.

Though the documentary tried to downplay Howard K. Stern’s sleaziness it was obvious he was trash. I didn’t think too highly of Anna’s doctor either. Was he actually supplying her with methadone while she was pregnant? I questioned why he was speaking about her medical history too as patients are still protected by HIPPA even in death. But then concluded that this information may be public record considering he faced criminal charges over supplying her with drugs.  So he could speak about her medical history and treatments without repercussions.

That was depressing. Nothing new but again reminds us what fame combined with a drug problem and limited emotional intelligence can bring. I hate when adult females allow themselves to be infantalized, I cringed hearing the bodyguard call her “baby girl”. None of these people cared about her. Stern was a sleeze. They really did Burkhead a disservice, I think we can all see he is not exploiting this child, I shudder to think if Stern had gotten custody. Sad but her mother dying was tragic but probably the best thing that could have happened, although you would think Burkhead could have gotten custody anyway. She really had a charisma early on, and maybe if she hadn’t gotten those bowling balls put on her chest if she would not have become a drug addict. If nothing else these docs make me appreciate my little ordinary life.

One of the saddest things about this documentary to me was how Anna spoke about her mother. She made up a horrible story about being abused by her mother, when people who knew Anna well said her mother was loving and kind. The part where the mother is describing the conversation she had with Anna about the stories and how Anna said she made more money if the story was bad… wow. She didn’t even consider how much was hurting her mother and her family.

I’ve never understood Daniel’s death. When I heard it was methadone combined with two anti-depressants, I assumed he had a problem with drugs or was recovering from drug addiction. Why else would someone take methadone? (My sister was on it for years trying to get off opiods.) But after reading lovesnark’s post I’m wondering about the rest of the story. It’s tragic how he died.

I remember when the newly slim (Trimspa) Anna was on that award show. She was higher than a kite. It got a lot of press. It’s yet another sad story of a celebrity being supplied with multiple addictive drugs by doctors who have no ethics. I don’t know what was going on with her and Howard K. Stern, but he looks like a big-time enabler at the very least.

I also recall what a train wreck her reality show was and how much damage it did to her reputation. It was a poor decision on her part. It reminds me of Whitney Houston’s documentary with Bobby Brown, which was also not well received.

Another part of this that made me sad was watching Anna and Howard Marshall, especially when he was calling her and she wasn’t answered. I felt sorry for this elderly man. In his wheelchair looking so frail, he reminded me of my dear father who passed away in 2021. I know it was just a snippet and for a long time he was a powerful man, but in that moment I sensed she was taking advantage of an old man in the last moments of his life. It just got to me.

I wish they had explained more about her relationship with Larry Birkhead. I don’t have a clear understanding of how they got together, how long they were together or what happened to cause such a rift.

Interestingly some of the reviews, including ones from Primetimer, don’t like this documentary and think it is too hard on Anna and deprived her of having a voice. Perhaps that is true, because I had a hard time sympathizing with her.

All these people saying how sweet Anna was, how they just instantly fell in love/besties with her….I don’t buy it. She never seemed to have more to say then “aren’t I gorgeous? Look at me! Look at me!”  They all kept her high to keep their party going. Anna probably paid for everything (with the old man’s money.) Getting her clean would mean she’d be coherent enough to see she was being used. But I don’t see her as a poor abused victim either.  She wanted that life. Told horrible lies about her own mother. Used an old man’s infatuation with her to get his money. You don’t get to use your looks for money, then complain that everyone uses you for your looks.  Her poor son. He never stood a chance.

I agree that she ran from Larry because he didn’t want his baby’s mother to be high all the time.

I remember her existence, of course, but don't know anything about her, so when this came up as a recommendation I thought why not, hoping it would be a bit like the Pamela Anderson documentary, exploring the misogyny to which the media and public subjected her.  Nope.  This was just a shitty collection of self-interested people telling their version of her (and the irony of calling out her thirst for fame when the only "fame" they have is because of their - often tenuous - connection to her).  I should have turned it off as soon as I saw producers had chosen to give members of the paparazzi the chance to spout off about her yet again, but I foolishly kept on.

Larry was a photographer from Louisville and met her at the Kentucky Derby. They saw each other off and on and he wound up moving in with her in CA. He had a problem with her addiction and Howard K Stern being there 24/7 and doing everything possible to facilitate her addiction. In interviews, Larry said Howard would lurk outside their bedroom and listen to them, totally creepy. Larry saw that Howard was a leech that was completely obsessed with Anna and knew that if Anna could get sober, she'd realize what a piece of shit he was and kick him to the curb.

After she got pregnant, Larry did everything he could to help her get clean, but Howard did everything he could to keep her high. She was in the hospital for a medically supervised detox and after a couple days, decided she couldn't take it, so Howard brought her dope to the hospital and she checked out against medical advice. That's when she ran away to the Bahamas. She believed Larry would leave her alone and she believed the Bahamian law of whoever signs the birth certificate is the legal father would keep him from having any legal claim to his kid. Larry wouldn't let it go and was able to score excellent legal representation and he kept fighting. Ultimately, DNA proved he was the father and he was able to get his daughter away from Howard.

Same…and it was something I struggled with while watching the documentary.  Just the idea that she literally stole her girlfriend’s tragedy and made it her own really just ended much of the sympathy I had for her right there.

What I took away from this is the only decent person was Larry Birkhead.  Anna was a lying pos Drug addict. Her son could have drank her soda as you say but add to that he was on 2 antidepressants and they are known to have suicidal side effects in young people.
One of her gay friends said she couldn’t stand Larry. What a nasty thing to say considering he's her  daughter’s father, she will hear this & he was the only one trying to protect her. A tiny baby with a drug addict narcissist mother. Baby dodged a bullet.
I never liked Anna. Always seemed to be nothing but a Marilyn Monroe wanna be fame whore. Low IQ, lying & ruining reputations because it brings in the $$. detriment to womenkind, as those who make money off their bodies are. Her daughter is better off with her dad.
Bonnie Stern still looks like trash. She shouldn’t have stopped at her teeth.

Methadone is prescribed to pregnant drug addicts.  Dr could have been trying to help her. But from what I’ve seen & experienced about drs., it would be rare that one would go out of his way to help a patient that left him. They don’t care that much.

She'd been taking methadone for years and was on a really high dose. Her original doctor retired and Dr Kapoor inherited her as a patient, so he just went along with what the first doctor had been prescribing, which included high doses of valium and soma. When she got pregnant, he wanted her to gradually taper down her dose of methadone and stop with all the other stuff, but she refused. She finally agreed to be admitted to the hospital for a medically supervised detox and Larry stayed with her. She only stayed for a few days and called Howard to bring her her dope. He showed up, Larry tried to intervene and she checked out of the hospital against medical advice. That's when she ran away to the Bahamas and her old neighbor who was a psychiatrist started prescribing her meds and sending them to her. The prescriptions were mostly filled at Ralph's pharmacy in LA and were in several different names, including Howard and Bonnie.

When she died, the most glaring thing was that there was no methadone in her system. Larry's lawyer had been after her to take a drug test and make the baby available for a DNA test and she'd been dodging the lawyer's demands. It had finally reached a point of her being court ordered and she couldn't dodge it anymore without being held in contempt of court. It can never be proven, but the 'flu' she was being treated for when she was in Florida was most likely methadone withdrawal so she could pass a drug test while she was in the US. She left her infant daughter in the Bahamas with her housekeeper because she knew there was a possibility of Larry being granted partial custody if the baby was in the US and DNA proved Larry was the father.

Rita Cosby wrote a book called Blonde Ambition that really goes into detail of what was going on during the period leading up to her death and what happened afterward. It's definitely worth a read if anyone is interested.

One thing that’s always bothered me is the comparison between Ana Nicole Smith and Marilyn Monroe. I don’t think Ana was in the same league as Marilyn, not in looks, talent or stardom. The only similarities I see are they both had drug problems and bleached blonde hair.

Anna was obsessed with Marilyn Monroe, had been since she was a kid. When she was in CA working for Guess, she actually lived in the house that Marilyn died in. She found out it was available and begged J Howard Marshall to pay the $10k a month rent so she could live there and the old fool did. After he died, she stopped paying the rent was wound up getting evicted. She was partying a lot and I guess would wake the neighbors up in the middle of the night ranting and raving that she saw Marilyn's ghost wandering around the house. The neighbors were really happy when she finally got the boot because of the constant partying.

This is interesting! I had no idea. You have a lot of information I haven’t heard elsewhere.

I can’t believe that house was $10K a month. I remember it as being pretty basic in terms of movie star homes.

The Guess ads made her up to look Marilynesque, but I never really bought it.

It really was a modest little house, it's referred to as a bungalow. The price of CA real estate and the Marilyn connection was the reason for the price, I'm sure.

I was never what you'd call a fan of Anna Nicole Smith. When she started modeling for Guess, I thought it was cool that they chose a woman with curves to represent their brand because, at that time, models were all stick thin and having actual feminine curves was never seen in advertising. I paid attention to the trial when she was trying to get a chunk of Marshall's fortune and I'd watched a couple episodes of the reality show because of the trainwreck factor and was completely creeped out by Howard.

I hadn't thought of her in years, then Daniel died and Howard did an interview on Larry King claiming to be the baby's father. The whole thing was so weird, I started paying attention to it and then she died. I fell into a very deep rabbit hole and followed the bizarre story until Howard and all of the others were finished with the court cases that were related to illegally procuring the mountains of drugs that were sent to the Bahamas and were found in the hotel room when she died. Howard carried around a fucking duffle bag full of drugs wherever they went! There were so many twists and turns and once I fell in, I couldn't stop until it was over😂

Really late to the party here. Two things. Her daughter is so lucky to lt have any side effects or birth defects from Anna's drug addiction when she was pregnant with her. And I couldn't help but notice that the didn't show that sickening video that Howard took of Anna when she was pregnant. The one where she's in clown makeup pushing the stroller around and she was high as a kite. So glad that Larry got custody of the daughter. She's having a normal (pretty much it seems like) upbringing. Larry adores her and she seems like a regular kid from what I've read. Larry posts pics ever year from the Kentucky Derby, and Dannielynn (sp) looks so much like Anna.

Really, really late to chime in. Always had a soft spot for ANS.

But really want to know what happened to her toothless cousin Shelly 😂
