The CW is looking to further build on its DC comics-inspired programming slate with Gotham Knights, a drama in the works from Batwoman executive producers Chad Fiveash & James Stoteraux and the show’s executive story editor Natalie Abrams. The project comes from Greg Brlanti’s Berlanti Productions, which is behind the CW’s Arrowverse, and Warner Bros. TV, where the company is based.

Written by Abrams, Fiveash & Stoteraux, Gotham Knights is based on Gotham Knights characters from the DC comics created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. In the wake of Bruce Wayne’s murder, his rebellious adopted son forges an unlikely alliance with the children of Batman’s enemies when they are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader. And as the city’s most wanted criminals, this renegade band of misfits must fight to clear their names. But in a Gotham with no Dark Knight to protect it, the city descends into the most dangerous it’s ever been. However, hope comes from the most unexpected of places as this team of mismatched fugitives will become its next generation of saviors known as the Gotham Knights.

Fiveash and Stoteraux with serve as executive producers alongside Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden. Abrams co-executive produces. Gotham Knights will be produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Despite the aforementioned creatives’ shared pedigree and the setting, Gotham Knights is not a spinoff of The CW’s Batwoman, nor is it based on the Warner Bros. Games video game series of the same name. Got that, everyone?

It's just weird that Batman is all over literally every other medium except live-action TV. I guess DC/WB thinks whichever big budget movie version is a better investment?

Interesting that the same producers from Batwoman are developing this -- disproving the lie from anti-fans that DC is somehow unhappy with the show.

So this is not a spinoff? Assuming that this actually makes it to series, it'll be weird to have two shows based in Gotham, but not related. In any case, the premise sounds very on-brand for CW.

There’s also the Batman prequel, Pennyworth, that’s been on EPIX (and is now moving to HBO Max) that’s about Alfred and Batman’s parents. Although it’s set in London.

Yep. Bat movies still makes them a ton of money so they don't see a reason to change things. The movies need to start tanking at the box office, and with regularity, before they'll even consider moving him to tv. Bruce, sans cowl, showing up in Titans or Batwoman is the closest we'll get for now.

Gotham Knights is one of the many DC shows currently in development over at The CW. Hot off the news of the show getting a Pilot order from the network, executive producer of the series Danny Cannon took to Instagram to announce that production will start in April. Cannon simply posted an image of the Gotham City skyline in the daytime with the words "Gotham Knights" looming over the city. Under the show's title are the DC logo and the confirmation that principal photography on the series will be beginning in April 2022.

While the image is not much to go off of, and there is no word if the Gotham Knights print is the official series logo, it is exciting to know that we are only two months away from the pilot shoot date. With principal photography beginning so soon, casting news for the show should be right around the corner, along with other plot details. Audiences should keep in mind that this show is not connected to the upcoming video game that shares the same name, although both properties have many Bat-Family plot similarities. Gotham Knights also isn't considered a Batwoman spinoff show, so we shouldn't expect many connections to the larger Arrowverse.

‘Gotham Knights’ CW Pilot Casts Fallon Smythe, Tyler DiChiara

Quote

Smythe stars as Harper Row. Described as streetwise, acerbic and often underestimated, the blue-haired bisexual is a gifted engineer who can fix anything. But what Harper wants most of all is to repair the broken lives of her and her brother, Cullen, the only person she trusts.

DiChiara stars as Cullen Row. After years of hiding his true self from an abusive parent, the transgender teen is tired of being polite and agreeable. Clever and adept at reading human nature, Cullen is ready to fight his own battles.

I'm still mostly 'meh', but curious about this potential show.

More casting for the pilot: 'Oscar Morgan, Olivia Rose Keegan & Navia Robinson Join CW Pilot'

Quote

Morgan will play Turner Hayes. Despite the murder of his biological parents, Turner remains resilient and driven to live up to his billionaire adoptive father’s name. While charming and soulful, Turner has never quite felt comfortable in this world of wealth and privilege.

Keegan portrays Duela. Abrasive, unpredictable and a little unhinged, Duela is, above all, a survivor. Born in Arkham Asylum and abandoned by her father – the most dangerous man in Gotham – Duela forged herself into a brutal fighter and skilled thief.

Robinson plays Carrie Kelley. Fearless, idealistic and plucky as hell, Carrie talked her way into being Batman’s unlikely sidekick. If there’s a burning building or a person in need, she’s the first to rush in. Just as long as she’s home by curfew.

Wow,  they really just ran out of Robins - LOL! DC really said only Titans can get Robins. They invented a whole new character as the son when they could have used Duke Thomas?

Stephanie Brown/Spoiler cast:

Anna Lore (the network’s All American) will play Stephanie Brown in the drama based on DC Comics characters.

<...>

Lore’s Stephanie Brown is described as someone whose sarcasm is matched only by her intellect. She was raised on a steady diet of brain teasers and puzzles and honed her skills to become a formidable coder. But her greatest talent may be hiding a less-than-perfect home life.

Finally another Robin. It's interesting that the same writers are going to do a second version of Stephanie.

Carrie Kelley was Robin in Frank Miller's Dark Knight graphic novel.

I wonder if they are going to explain what happened with Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake and Damian Wayne, or if they are going to just pretend like the four of them don't exist (along with Barbara Gordon and any and everyone else Bat-adjacent.)

Then there are the three remaining DC series, veteran Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman and freshman Naomi, which will be in consideration alongside DC pilot Gotham Knights. Word is that about half of the four projects will make it to next season. Batwoman and Gotham Knights are set in a similar universe, so it is possible that one of them is picked up for next season. It will be a difficult decision on Legends of Tomorrow, which is getting old, currently in its seventh season, having gone through a string of cast changeovers. The CW’s President Mark Pedowitz is known for giving the network’s long-running series a proper goodbye, so a final season would be logical solution but, given the uncertainty over the CW’s ownership, the final decisions may not be the network’s to make.

The CW’s three pilots this season — all based on underlying IP — remain strong contenders as the cuts start to come in: Supernatural prequel The Winchesters, Walker origin story Walker: Independence and Gotham Knights. Because of their pedigree, solid execution and the fact that this is half the number of pilots the CW has normally picked up over the past decade, I hear there is a possibility for all of them to go to series.

They cancelled Batwoman for this?? They should have used Batwoman to introduce these characters then make this a spin-off, because so far this hasn't hooked me with anything. We already had a next-gen Bat Team.

‘Gotham Knights’: What Misha Collins’ Harvey Dent Has in Common With Castiel

Well, Collins may have girl bossed a little too close to the sun on this one, because that’s pretty much what his Harvey Dent costume is. Speaking with TV Insider ahead of The CW’s upfront presentation on Thursday, May 19 at the New York City Center, Collins revealed Harvey’s look.

“I’m wearing a trench coat again,” he says with a laugh. “I’m wearing a blue suit and a trench coat again, so we’re really just recycling the same exact wardrobe.”
*  *  *
Bruce Wayne is murdered in the Gotham Knights pilot. And his adopted son, Turner Hayes (Oscar Morgan) is blamed for his death. To clear his name and avenge Bruce, Turner teams up with the children of Gotham’s villains. This mismatched group of fugitives will become Gotham’s next generation of saviors, known as the Gotham Knights. Collins’ Harvey is the man trying to capture Turner.
*  *  *
“Batman’s adopted son, Turner Hayes, ends up falling into a role where he’s filling a vacuum left by Batman’s demise,” Collins tells TV Insider. “But at the same time, he’s framed for the murder itself. So I’m pursuing him, as well as all of law enforcement in Gotham.”
*  *  *
“[Turner’s] on the run, but he’s defending Gotham at the same time. He’s a reluctant hero,” Collins says. “I think that’s an exciting new take on the Batman universe. And Oscar and our other cast mates are going to be these young, cool, new vigilante justice warriors. It’s going to be great.”

Wait -- are all of the main characters literally teens in this? I don't think that had been mentioned until now. We just lost another teen team (Naomi) that didn't have the angst/grittiness turned up to 11, and a much better developed next generation Bat-Team (Batwoman), so I'm not really interested in this when right now it looks like a mish-mash of CW tropes.

I hope this show is able to find its 'hook', because so far it seems to have several drawbacks: it's not connected to the remaining DC shows; no costumes(?); low star power in both comic characters and actors; the lead is a brand new character that isn't even a Robin; and a dead Batman. None of these things are necessarily fatal by themselves, but together they might be. I'm not expecting this to go past one season, honestly.

Also, people seem determined to dunk on this from the get-go. Batwoman had some vocal haters, but it did have an audience. I'm not sure this show is going to do better them. (Not to mention Stargirl Season 3 will probably do a better job of  executing 'a next-gen team of heroes and villains solving a murder', plus costumes, VFX, and recognizable faces.)

This could be decent, but I think it's going to be a uphill battle.

gotham-knights-cast-photo-1.jpg

Misha Collins as Harvey Dent, Gotham's charismatic, hard-charging District Attorney, who is dashing and filled with swagger. With a rigid sense of right and wrong, Harvey's idealism and his single-minded quest for justice will ironically and tragically transform him into one of Gotham's most feared supervillains, Two-Face.

Oscar Morgan as Turner Hayes, the adopted son of Bruce Wayne. Turner and the children of some of Batman's greatest enemies are framed when Bruce Wayne gets murdered. The GCPD is hot on their trail. Navia Robinson as Carrie Kelley, a fearless and idealistic teen, Batman trained her to be Robin.

Anna Lore as Stephanie Brown AKA Spoiler, the Cluemaster's daughter and a former Robin, she is someone whose sarcasm is matched only by her intellect. gotham-knights-cast-photo-7.jpg
Rahart Adams as Brody March, who is confident and charismatic student at Gotham Academy. Brody has the brains and the looks — and he knows it. However, his entitled attitude covers his insecurity and jealousy of anyone who rivals him.

Damon Dayoub as Lincoln March, father of Brody March, he is a charismatic, self-made industrialist with designs on becoming Gotham's next mayor; the only thing more important to Lincoln than his legacy is the power he wields as one of the city's Old-money elegant elites.

Lauren Stamile as Rebecca, mother of Brody March, she plays the dutiful "Good Wife" to her business mogul husband. A caring and supportive mother, one would never know she's trapped in an unhappy marriage.

There are a few early reviews out; apparently the first six episodes were screened. It's supposedly decent, if one is into the CW formula and Batman lore (... minus the major Batman characters).

EXCLUSIVE: Misha Collins On How Jensen Ackles Was Almost Gotham Knights’ Batman

The Flash Podcast (as part of Multiverse of Color) recently spoke with one of the leads, Misha Collins, who will play Harvey Dent, destined to become Two-Face down the line. Best known for his role as Castiel on Supernatural, one of The CW’s biggest dramas of all time, Collins was asked if Gotham Knights season 1 would see either of his former co-stars Jensen Ackles or Jared Padalecki. It turns out one of them almost made it into the pilot, and it would have been for the Dark Knight himself: Batman!

Collins revealed that they had tried to book Ackles for Gotham Knights, but due to schedule conflicts, they were not able to make it work. In terms of Jared Padalecki, Collins had a humorous suggestion for who the Supernatural co-star could play on Gotham Knights. The full interview will be released next Monday, including the video version on DC TV Podcasts’ YouTube channel!

This is streamed on HBO to everywhere in the world. There is probably not a lot of new shows on HBO. The 4th most popular show is "Woman" a Turkish soap opera from 2017. The story of mother Bahar, who carries the weight and love of two children in their hearts with enthusiasm in their hearts. Bahar, abandoned by her mother when she was eight years old, later lost her grandma and her father. When she thinks she is all alone, she meets Sarp, whom she delicately loves.

I don't think it is that significant, it just lets you realize how little new/current interesting content is actually on HBO, especially globally.  House of the Dragon is at #10.

When looking at the top US list for HBO, "Gotham Knights" doesn't even appear. #1 Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,  #2 Succession, #3 Walker Independence, #4 Royal Crackers.

Looking at their source material (FlixPatrol) it seems to be a daily list, so just the shows that are most popular today. Shows that are currently airing new episodes will have an advantage over shows that have already finished airing their latest season. And there seem to be noticeable daily fluctuations if you like at other dates. Looking at their lists over a longer period of time would give a better result. Gotham Knights is 17th if you look at the list for this year. Although to be fair that list would give an advantage to shows that have already aired more episodes than the four that Gotham Knights has aired so far. House of the Dragon is second on the list for this year and you'll see relatively high ranking for shows that ended long ago but have a lot of episodes like Supernatural, Game of Thrones and Friends. Also, how does FlixPatrol come up with their rankings? Did I overlook something or is there no explanation? Do they actually get information from streaming services about how many people watch a show or do they base their rankings on other sources?

Yeah, that blurb is one of those *highly specific* metrics rankings - like being the first left-handed baseball player to get a hit, out, & walk while playing a day game in September on a Friday.  Or when Black Widow was the highest grossing movie of the year (for movies premiering on a Tuesday in July during a pandemic).

This shows ratings are abysmal, even by CW standards. It debuted to 600k viewers.

In fairness to the show, it didn't get the level of promotion a lot of CW shows get. I didn't know it existed until I stumbled upon it on Hulu more than three episodes in. That said, this show is by no means worthy of avid interest. It isn't terrible. But it isn't more than fun.
