Despite more banging on the WOKE!!!! drum throughout the episode, I really enjoyed the final new rule. I have made an active effort this year to remove myself from toxic political discussions (unsubbing from many subreddits, cutting back Facebook usage to almost nothing), and I am mentally better for it. 

Hate is far too lucrative, unfortunately.

  Agreed...for the most part. But I don't understand how Bill proposes that we deal with, for example, the Greg Abbotts and Ron DeSantises (and their supporters) of this country. Sorry, but I DO hate them. I live in a blue state which could at any time turn back into a red state, and I have two teenage daughters whom I will be goddamned if I'll have living in a state where a $10,000 bounty can be put on their heads if they seek to terminate a pregnancy. What, we're supposed to come at people in favor of that, or the 1/6 insurrectionists, with love? GTFOH with that.

  I'm all about us dividing this country into a red "side" and a blue "side". No red siders get to visit the blue side w/o a negative COVID test, and all firearms have to be left at the border. 

   I know it seems pessimistic, but we are NOT a "United States" at this point, and may never be again. And I am done having to live in danger of school shootings and ever-more-virulent COVID variants because the red-staters keep ruining things for the rest of us.

   Bill's pretty safe in his rich-guy bubble. It's relatively easy for him to preach "not hating" the other side, b/c he can have conservatives (and the likes of Steven Bannon) on the show or play footsie with Ann Coulter, and then act like, "Can't we all get along?" No, Bill. No, we can't.

The point that Bill has been making is that there are no red States and blue States, there are red rural areas, and blue cities. How do you even go about dividing up a country like that? You can't, not without it turning into a civil war. So we are left with two options: learn to get along with each other, or start killing each other.

So, if Bill is a "free speech guy," then how come the "woke" people aren't allowed to complain? Are the only people entitled to free speech the people who say terrible things? I have not seen the Dave Chapelle thing so I'm not even going to wade into that. But this is just more of Bill talking out of both sides of his mouth by saying you're allowed to say anything you want, but you're not allowed to say anything against people saying anything they want.

And what started out as a pretty decent interview with Saru Jayaraman nosedived into another rant about millennials and and Gen Zers being lazy. God, but Bill is just a cranky old man anymore.

Some of the things John McWhorter says sound like he heard talking points on Fox News and ran with them. What is this Democratic message that doesn't fly in Ohio or Iowa? Defund the police? Socialized medicine is a Republican talking point.  They're the ones going around screaming about socialism. And Bill's right there with him. I'm gobsmacked by how much these guys are carrying the water for right wing pundits. 

Yeah we should all stop hating each other. Problem solved! Except . . . we'd have to address why we hate each other. And this is another false equivalency "both sides" thing that lets Bill rant about wokeness and cancel culture again.

I take Bill's point in the ending new rule, and it was well done. However, I think most people are just full of hot air. They'll spew whatever online, but at the end of the day, there are bills to pay. No one is going to shooting at their neighbor in the street. 

It's analogous to people bloviating about how they're going to quit their job if they're required to get vaccinated. Overwhelmingly, the figures prove otherwise. 

Did anyone actually watch the Chapelle special? I did a while ago, and I don't know anyone else who has. 

I'm actually glad Bill said to stfu at the end because we've said the same here plenty of times.

One of the subrdddits I unsubbed from is the Herman Cain Award, in which people gloat over the deaths of anti-vaxxers. It's not a small subreddit, either. They had to come down hard on some posters because they were doxing the anti-vaxxers, and some Redditors were harassing their families on Facebook. I think that's just an example that gets to Bill's point. The temperature of the rhetoric keeps inching higher and higher and higher as we lose humanity for each other. Bill is poking holes at the left because that is where he comes from.

I understand the point Bill was trying to make, but it comes from a place of privilege. As a straight, white, man, he's never been expected to get used to dealing with hate. A dear friend of mine had a bottle thrown at his head leaving a gay bar less than 20 years ago, in the 21st century. Until Bill knows what it's like to have a fun night out include the threat of getting his head bashed in, he can STFU with his kumbaya BS. I don't intend to try to find common ground with such people.

Bill's not used to getting any pushback. He did once, from Berkeley, and he's been bitching about it nonstop ever since. Talk about a snowflake.

Bill can talk about stopping the hate, but the left isn’t the one who stormed the capital to support a lie.  The left aren’t supporting a man for president that hates half the population.  
The left aren’t oppressing the majority of people and trying to keep them from voting.

He needs to take his message to those doing most of the hate.

Yang is a fraud.  He couldn’t get support in the Democratic primaries, couldn’t get support running for mayor, now formed his own party.

 

Then wants to lecture Democrats about not getting it with predominantly white states like Oh or IA.

Well some Democrats actually win elections and hold office.
