Huh. Well, having it only be marginalized people being taken is definitely a twist on the original show. Hopefully they can do it justice! It could be rough to balance stories of historic marginalization with current day marginalization, and also with marginalization caused by being given special abilities that is the basic plot of the sci-fi show, but I'll watch and see how they do!

Over the last century at least, four thousand four hundred people who were overlooked, undervalued, or otherwise marginalized vanished without a
trace off the face of the planet. Last night, inexplicably, they were all returned in an instant to Detroit, Ml, having not aged a day and with no memory of
what happened to them. As the government races to understand the phenomenon, analyze the potential threat, and contain the story, an empathetic
social worker (David-Jones) and hardened community corrections officer (Roach) are among the civil servants called upon to deal with the uncanny
refugees. The new partners clash in ideology and approach, but gradually find they have more in common than they thought as they become familiar
with those under their care, including: a lawyer and resilient young mother from the early aughts (Adebumola), whose unexpected reunion with her
estranged husband (Jeacoma) and suddenly teenaged daughter is immediately rocky; a WWI Army surgeon fresh from the Harlem Renaissance
(Thompson); an influential hidden figure from the Mississippi civil rights movement (Ladymore); a black sheep reverend-scion born to a notable
televangelist family in 1990s Chicago (King); a seemingly shallow but misunderstood D-list reality TV star (Johnson) from Miami, circa 2015; and two
wildly different unaccompanied teens, a vibrant girl (newcomer Autumn Best) whose bell bottoms give away her 1970s upbringing, and an introspective,
prescient boy (Wooten) whose origin remains a mystery. These unwilling time travelers, collectively the 4400, must grapple with their impossible new
reality, the fact that they've been returned with a few ... upgrades, and the increasing likelihood that they were brought back now for a reason they're
only beginning to understand.

4400 (Oct. 25, The CW)

The 4400 is getting a modern — and meaningful — update. The CW's reimagining of the USA Network sci-fi series (2004–07) begins when 4,400 marginalized people who vanished without a trace throughout the past hundred years return in an instant in 2021, with no memory of what happened. As some begin to develop powers, the government races to analyze the potential threat, while "the 4400," as they're called, must grapple with the mystery of what happened to them — and why they've reappeared now.

Co-showrunner Ariana Jackson says updating the series for 2021 meant exploring "the history and legacy of white supremacy in our country and how it hasn't been fixed, and how that has led to where we are now."  —Sydney Bucksbaum

‘4400’: Kausar Mohammed, Wilder Yari & Theo Germaine Join The CW Reboot

Spoiler

EXCLUSIVE: Kausar Mohammed (The Syed Family Xmas Eve Game Night), Wilder Yari (The L Word: Generation Q) and Theo Germaine (The Politician) are set for heavily recurring roles in 4400, the CW’s reimagining of the 2004-07 USA Network sci-fi drama series.
*  *  *
Mohammed will play Soraya, a friend of Jharrel’s who works in IT and is one of the people called in to help process the thousands of returnees who descend on Detroit out of nowhere. An acknowledged sci-fi nerd, she herself can’t even grasp the bizarre possibilities that might be responsible for the return of all these people.

Yari is Jessica, an agent with the DHS who is all business when she’s called in to work on the mystery of the thousands of people who have simply appeared out of the blue in Detroit. She’s been romantically involved with Keisha (Ireon Roach), a Detroit parole officer, for six months, and is glad Keisha has also been called in to work on the bizarre situation.

Germaine portrays Noah, one of the 4400 that mysteriously appeared on Belle Isle. Noah – like Mildred (Autumn Best) and Hayden (AMARR) – is a teenager who has been separated from family and home (though Noah has been taken from the very recent past). These three bond together to find normal in the chaos and explore their new circumstances.

For those (like me) who need a "cheat sheet" of the main characters, here's a screenshot of the show's PR bios page (https://cwtvpr.com/the-cw/shows/4400/bios):

The DHS Agent (Keisha's significant other) has a last name of "Tanner" and is portrayed by Wilder Yari.  The character's first name is apparently "Jessica" (per the Deadline.com article linked above).

The following descriptions are direct quotes from the actor bio pages (linked from the above website link).  Most of these details were already included in the official description of the show (quoted earlier in this thread).

Quote
  • Brittany Adebumola stars as Shanice Murray, a young up-and-coming lawyer, who mysteriously reappears after being missing for sixteen years
  • Joseph David-Jones stars as Jharrel Mateo, an empathetic social worker who is assigned to help keep the peace after thousands of missing people suddenly reappear
  • Ireon Roach stars as Keisha Taylor, a hardened community corrections officer who is assigned to help keep the peace after thousands of missing people suddenly reappear
  • TL Thompson stars as Andre Davis, a WWI Army surgeon from the Harlem Renaissance who mysteriously reappears after being missing since the 1920s
  • Jaye Ladymore stars as Claudette Williams, an influential hidden figure from the Mississippi civil rights movement, who mysteriously reappears after being missing since the 1950s
  • Derrick A. King stars as Isaiah “Rev” Johnston, a black sheep reverend-scion born to a notable televangelist family, who mysteriously reappears after being missing since the 1990s
  • Khailah Johnson stars as LaDonna Landry, a seemingly shallow but misunderstood D-list reality TV star who reappears after being missing for six years
  • Cory Jeacoma stars as Logan Kaminski, a husband whose wife, Shanice, mysteriously reappears after being missing for sixteen years
  • AMARR stars as Hayden Turner, an introspective teenage boy, who mysteriously reappears after being missing for decades
  • Autumn Best stars as Mildred Bell, a young teenage girl from the 1970’s, who mysteriously reappears after being missing for decades

That's a really great video.
While I can appreciate it more now that I've seen the first episode, I wonder if it would have been helpful for more viewers to have seen this earlier in order to manage expectations?
Or did maybe TPTB at the CW not want the video out before the premiere because they were afraid certain white fans of the OG 4400 wouldn't watch or, worse, start bashing the concept on social media before it ever aired?

Regardless, I loved what the actors had to say in this video.
Thanks for sharing, @tv echo!

ETA: And now I'm remembering all the flack over Starbuck being cast as a woman in the reboot of Battlestar Gallactica.

20 Best Characters from Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Shows in 2021

1. Andre Davis (4400)
...
4400 arrived on our screens in October, and immediately gave us an interesting array of characters to follow. Andre was one of the ones that immediately caught our attention.

The 1920s doctor went missing while attempting to cure whooping cough and is mesmerized by the wonders of 2021. While he is invested in the medical advances of 2021, he is also finding a vocabulary for his identity as he learns words like trans for the first time.

Andre’s story is still unfolding and will likely continue to progress through 2022, however, these first few episodes show promise as this character comes into his own outside of the Detroit hotel.

15. Claudette Williams (4400)
...
Claudette is a character that arrived in 2021 and wasn’t afraid to show her personality and independence. Throughout the episodes that have aired so far, we have seen her challenge her new ability, stand up to authority and assert her independence as only she can.

Her perspective adds a lot to 4400‘s already ambitious plotline showing how bigotry and hate can change their face.

19. 4400 (The CW)
...
A reboot of a 2004 USA Network show about people disappearing without a trace and reappearing decades later, 4400 premiered, ready to take on a changing world and new political landscape.

The show puts BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and disabled storylines front and center.

The returnees come from different decades, bringing a unique perspective and experience. In a short time, the new series has already laid the groundwork for solid storylines that center on the returnees and not the government officials assigned with taking care of them.

Not only does 4400 serve up some solid character-centric storylines, but it also expertly balances them with plot points that keep the viewers engaged. Plenty of answers still need to be revealed about their disappearance, so this is the type of mystery to keep audiences hooked.
