Today I drive up to town for my Bone Density test. I may do some shopping, but it just depends on how long the test takes, if I will have enough time. These mid day appointments have a way of spoiling the whole day for anything else!

That's so funny, I was just complaining about the same thing. I've had a string of mid day appointments myself all of which have wrecked up the day for anything else. Some have been medical but others have been contractors, a haircut and even an oil change. Oh, and my Medicare counselor, lol.

I had a bone density test last year. It was a big nothingburger and I was told my bones are in excellent shape for my age. Yay! I hope your test results are as good!

BTW I found out I don't have a vascular issue in my legs and they now think it's Lymphedema. One doctor told me he wouldn't be surprised if that and that large fibroid I have account for at least 10 lbs. of extra weight. That wouldn't surprise me either. He also told me he thinks my leg swelling is due to some kind of blockage in my abdomen - well doesn't that sound like it could be the fibroid? So he is sending me for a special CAT scan to find out. Unfortunately I couldn't get an appointment for one until the middle of November.

I also was referred for therapy and special massage to improve the symptoms of lymphedema. That was even worse, I couldn't find a therapist anywhere sooner than the end of January! There aren't enough of them in this area.

Isn’t lymphedema vascular?

It can be, but in my case it's related to the lymphatic system and poor lymph node drainage. Or so that's what they are telling me. They tell me my veins are fine. 🤷‍♀️

What really sucks is now since my nothing fall in September when I barely bruised my right shin, my right leg is now swelling more than my left, which is causing me discomfort. Most people don't really notice it in pants but the doctors and I do. My ankle is heavier and I feel like I have "chub rub" on my upper inner thighs thanks to my right leg. I feel like the right leg of some of my pants is tighter and it feels off kilter in some cases. 🙁

5,879 steps yesterday.

The Bone Density scan only took about 1/2 hour so I did have time to do some shopping which gave me some extra steps. The first results show as Normal Density. The found my original test taken 9/2004 and compared and there was just tiny differences. So my bones seem to be just fine!

Today, once it warms up, I am going to start the leaf raking. This chore will take days...

@Yeah No glad you got some answers, sorry it will take so long to get in to see follow-up people. Interesting re your swelling, my right leg also swells a lot and I am beginning to wonder if it is Lymphedema. Consensus so far has been after effects of Toxemia with my pregnancies, but listening to what you are being told, it has got me wondering if it is a result of the lymph nodes I had removed under my right arm when I had breast cancer.  Something I will ask my pcp in January at my appt. A visit to a vascular person may be in my future...

Thank you, and yes, I have actually heard of lymphedema being caused by pregnancy issues so maybe do a "Dr. Google" on that and see what you find. Yours sounds like a mild case. I'm told mine is mild too but the right leg now has me concerned that it's progressed a little at least in that leg. But I'm told it looks like it's a good candidate for the therapy, which is supposed to really ease symptoms. That and wearing compression garments. I have been wearing compression stockings at home and elevating my legs for years now which is good but I will now be able to get the better hose prescribed for me. I am hoping beyond hope that this CAT scan will help me get to the root cause of the problem and maybe solve it with that uterine artery embolization procedure (if they think the fibroids are causing it).

We (PA) need rain. That is all!

So do we here in CT. We have barely had any rain at all in 2 months and yet we are still not considered in "drought conditions" yet. That's because we had a deluge of rain all Summer long. I have been loving the cooler, drier weather but I'm now worried about brush fires - there's a big one on a mountain mid-state that's been making the news and I live on a mountain next to a nature preserve so it's just one more thing to worry about. Plus I'm having construction done on my house to fix some damage from a fallen tree, so I always worry about fires with that too. Of course my husband says I worry too much about everything, lol.

4,120 steps yesterday.

Basically a lazy day. Mille wanted a lot of lap time and she got it!

I spent time going through a few of the crystals to pick ones I wanted to keep for myself. I didn't do that before the first time the crystal lady came and I probably gave away some I should have kept in that lot.

Spent a lot of time looking a videos to purge my printer ink. It is only really printing black any more and the other tanks are almost full so it is clogged somewhere. I'll do it today.

Also did a lot of reading on dental adhesives, having problems with the upper staying in. I found Sea Bond at the grocery on Thurs when I was in town and it is amazing! Works best of all I've tried and so easy! But I think the plate needs some adjustments so I'm reading up on Reddit about other's experiences and learning quite a bit from them. I'll be calling my dentist Monday.

I generally don't like Reddit, but a few subs I look at a bit are: cats, one TV show (SW), now dentures. Not too much controversy in those subs!

@Denize No nothing like Robyn's raking. I raked a 3' buffer all around my house just in case pipes under the house have to be accessed any time soon...II hope not!! Still a lot of raking left!

A lazy day yesterday, and frustrating day too. Trying to figure out how to run the purge to clean my printer heads turned into a bunch of YouTube videos, the end result being I guess I don't have the right cable to connect my laptop to the printer to run the program. I have a small basket full of all sorts of left over cables (and old phones!) but none match the plug in on the side of my printer. Nothing in printer box either. So that was a bunch of wasted/frustrating time. I am beginning to be really sorry I went for the Eco Tank printer!

Crystal lady comes at 9AM today, she usually stays 2-3 hours. Then I have to take garbage up to road. If we get the showers/snow, the leaves are going to be a mess to try to rake. I may have missed my window.

I have to go down to the other town tomorrow for Podiatrist appt. I think I will look around at leaf blowers while I am there. My better hope would be up in the larger town north of me, but I'm not going that way this week. My local Ace is a choice too if I don't find anything tomorrow.

The rest of the day I think will be lazy, my knees are reacting to the change in the weather so want to rest them.  I'll just let the cat curl up on my lap and watch TV and read things on the computer.

5,061 steps yesterday.

As usual the crystal lady kept me hopping for a couple of hours.  Then a few chores and gathered more things for Goodwill since I am going that direction today to see the Podiatrist.

The weather says we may have some rain or snow showers today. At least so far the weather is decent, hope it holds until I get back home if there is any snow to come.

I may end up with more steps today, as I plan a grocery stop and maybe Ace after dr appt. I want to look at leaf blowers and see if I think I can handle one... It would be so nice to just blow the leaves into a pile!!

I have lymphedema and lipidema. Yayy me. My right leg and foot were very swollen and tight, and doctors kept giving me more diuretics which did nothing. Once I got connected to a lymphedema therapist, everything changed. The fluid retention was lymph fluid that couldn't move; diuretics weren't the solution at all so I stopped them. I now have custom made-to-fit knee high compression socks and a set of "moon pants" from toe to groin that hook up a pump that I use for at least an hour a day. It's very relaxing, actually, and it compresses from the toes up. My right leg is smaller by 3 inches from a year ago and I feel lots better.

What helps is eating clean, drinking lots of water, and getting movement into my life. Not easy since I'm in a wheelchair, but we can always move more.

I'm glad you finally got hooked up with the right doctors and are getting relief!

I was talking to my Podiatrist today about the swelling in my right leg and all the bulging veins there and spider veins in my feet.  I asked him if I should see a vascular specialist of some sort. He said not a bad idea, and suggested compression socks. I have been wearing the knee high ones for a couple months now and do have some improvement. Even so, I think I will look into a vascular specialist. At the least I might get some custom made compression socks. The over the counter ones vary so much even with the same amount of compression supposedly.

What is odd is it is just the one leg!

Thank you for posting this! Wow, you have had a lot of improvement, that's fantastic and very encouraging! I wonder if they're going to give me the moon pants. I have seen them online. I look forward to the custom fit knee highs because the store bought ones don't fit perfectly. I had the professionally fitted ones years ago but insurance didn't pay for them at the time and they got expensive so I stopped doing it. I've been wearing the store bought hose for over a decade now.

I can't wait until I finally get the therapy. I was thinking of telling my doctor how long I have to wait and ask if he has any suggestions in the meantime. Unfortunately I'm a little busy right now. I'm doing my semi-annual clothing swap and getting ready for having to vacate my house for about a week sometime in the next few weeks. Several months ago my roof was damaged when a huge tree hit it and we're finally having the work done. It's going to involve having everything in the living areas (not the bedrooms) put into a storage POD on our lawn and living in a hotel for about a week while the work is done. We're also taking the opportunity to add a few square feet to the living area and getting a new front door/front windows/roof/gutters/flooring so it's a big undertaking. They've already poured the foundation for the addition and framing is going to start soon. I'm on pins and needles and stressed out! We're supposed to have help from a moving company to get everything packed but that's a big deal and I admit I am not looking forward to that. Also, it's going to wreck up our holiday season. Of course the builder and my husband think this is all very exciting and it is, because insurance is paying for all of it but until it's over it's going to be very nerve wracking and uncomfortable, not to mention a LOT of work!

So anyway my leg is not the biggest thing on my mind these days, which is probably a good thing. I'm already feeling some relief because the weather has been cooler and my legs and feet swell less the colder it gets. But the right leg is still a little heavier than the left one. Fortunately it's only a little bit bigger, but it's bigger than it was before I fell and it always was a teeny bit bigger than the left one to begin with, and it is uncomfortable at times.

So anyway, on Tuesday I got over 7,000 steps in the house alone doing all that work. It really tired me out and my legs felt like they were "buzzing" with a strange, mild pain and strain, and feeling tired afterward. This happens all the time whenever I do manual work. I can do the work, it just gives me some kind of myalgia. When I have described it to her my primary she has wondered if it's fibromyalgia, but I think it might come from arthritis and the lymphedema. I don't do a lot of lifting at all, at least nothing heavy but from the bending and moving stuff around my back also is sensitive. Weirdly, though, walking is not an issue for me, in fact aerobic walking is very good for all my issues. But this is more than just aerobic exercise.

I used to have help with stuff like this from a friend my husband and I used to pay but he's been disabled for a few years now, so forget that anymore. And forget my husband. He will help if I ask him but he doesn't volunteer it. He's a couple of  years older than me and he's been doing a lot of his own work. I have streamlined the clothing swap over the years but it's still a lot of work, or at least it feels like more work the older I get. And this time I'm sorting through the hall closet and getting stuff out of there into tubs and onto a clothing rack in the garage. I could let the moving company pack up that stuff but I want access to my Winter coats, which are in there. Of course this all has to happen during the change of seasons when I need access to just about every season of clothing! We've had temps. from the 30s all the way up to the 80s in the past week. The past few days have been cold - now they're going to be over 70 for the next few days. So it's a nightmare!

Anyway, thanks again! 🙂

Good news on this! The Lymphedema Therapy Act went into effect in 2024, and insurance now covers 3 pairs of custom compression twice a year!  Well, I know Medicare does and usually what they cover, other insurance companies also cover. Each pair is soooo expensive to pay out of pocket, so this has been a huge help.

The clothing swap time is definitely crazy - and moving things to a Pod while they work on your house?  No wonder you got so many steps in!  Take care of yourself and rest when you can.

Thanks for that info.  Now I am for sure going to seek out the proper dr to see re my leg so I can take advantage of that.  I have diabetes and get the free pair of diabetic shoes (first time this year) the diabetes may even already qualify me for the custom compression socks. I think I will check with my Podiatrist today and then my pcp if need be.  I hate the over the counter compression this could really help me!

4,851 steps yesterday.

I did expect more, but I guess factoring in the travel time to and from the dr and the waiting room time, I'm not surprised. I did do a little grocery shopping but that is all. I saw the cutest little black bunny munching on grasses next to the train track by the grocery store. I wish I had taken a photo. I hope it is a feral and not someone's escaped pet.

Today my friend is coming over to heat wrap my under the house water pipe by the filter. Then I am going to do some organizing in the garage to make room for my car to pull in this Winter. That is going to be quite the task because it is the big pile of boxes we moved from the kitty side of the garage. Fortunately since my friend took all her tools home I have several shelves and carts to move the boxes to now.

I am probably going to have to replace my Epson 2400 Eco Tank printer already. It is barely a year old but has been nothing but trouble. I looked up the unit on Amazon where I bought it and they don't even list it any more and in the little explanation pop up it says among other things that they can't back up items that don't perform up to specs. A lemon, I guessed as much!!  I'm going back to a simple cartridge printer which is adequate for my needs. Sheesh.....I didn't even get a year of decent printing out of the Epson!!  One more thing I had to putz around trying to find a fix that basically wasn't there!

Thank you! The vascular doctor who tested me told me that Medicare pays for the stockings as long as there's a diagnosis of lymphedema, which is great. I'm not sure about the particulars but even if it's only part of the cost it will be worth it.

I took it easy today and got my Covid shot, then went to vote. This is the first election ever that CT has allowed early voting and it was super easy. No stress, easy parking and no people campaigning. Plus it was really close to home.

I'm a little tired from the shot but nothing like some earlier Covid shots and boosters, which I'm very happy about.

Oh, and then my husband took this photo of a bear getting into our next door neighbor's garbage, lol. Fortunately he left ours alone!

Correction - the name of the law that covers compression is the Lymphedema Treatment Act, not Therapy Act. Still works, tho :)  The idea is that you have a pair of compression garments to wear, one to wash, and one to dry at the same time. I only have 2 pair but it's still a huge savings.

Glad I could share the info with y'all and hope it helps!

Thank you SO much for sharing that, I looked it up and it looks permanent so we'll benefit from it in 2025. Even 15 years ago I remember some of those knee-high stockings cost over $50. I can only imagine what they must cost now!

One question - does Medicare cover the "moon pants" at all?

24 minutes ago, ginger90 said:

A good way to speed up drying the compression stockings is to lay them on a towel and roll them in the towel nice and tight and then hang them.

I find the knee high stockings dry very fast. I just hang them over my shower rod at night and they're usually dry by morning unless it's unusually hot and humid out.

I didn't pay anything for them. Not sure if it was Medicare or my Part B supplement (Mutual of Omaha) that paid, or maybe both, but I had nothing out of pocket to pay - and believe me, those things are not cheap! Really the expense is for the pump itself, but the leg sleeves (or there are arm ones if that's what you need) are expensive on their own.

My therapist started me with "basic" pump that had 4 chambers in the leg sleeves. After using it for a few months, he put in for an upgrade for pump and sleeves that have 8 chambers, so more precise compression. Each area can be separately set for more or less compression. My first set was already paid for, so he took them to give to someone w/o insurance coverage, with my blessing.

Oh - and my regular compression socks can go in the dryer, according to the person who fitted me for them. They're from Jobst and cost about $200/leg (!) but Medicare paid for all of it this year. What a relief!!

One thing about our small, East Coast states — they're jam-packed full of people, so we do have a little safety in numbers thing going on.

In terms of people per square mile, MA is the third densest US state. CT is fourth. Find our area, and you still have to sift through so many people.

5,697 steps yesterday.

My friend wasn't up to coming over yesterday. I had already dragged out the insulation from the garage and the heat tape and extension cord. Decided to leave the insulation boards out by the filter as the weather looked good. Well, overnight the forecast changed to snow this morning. go figure. Hope it isn't much and stops quickly. She's coming today to get it finished.

Did some chores inside, changed bedding and even got out the down comforter. Not much else on agenda for today.

I have pretty much decided I am just going to get a new regular cartridge printer.  I can get a decent, for my purposes, on Amazon for $50-$75.  The Epson has been problems since the get go and I just don't see throwing more money at it for a new cable too.  I may just drive up to Best Buy tomorrow and get one there. At least then I can just take it back , no hassle, if there is a problem.

Thanks @altopower for the additional info.

Helped my friend with the heat tape and started organizing the "yard sale" boxes in the garage. I have emptied a metal storage shelf in my office from crystals, so moved it to the garage. Now I have even more places for the boxes so I can make room for my car.

I started stacking boxes on some of the other shelves already in the garage. It won't take too much more work to be able to get my little car in there again. I know opening and closing the big door is going to scare the heck out of the cats but they'll get used to it.

If my knees and back don't mind, I may continue clear the space in the garage. They weren't happy last night so I just have to see how things go this morning.

It would have to be both because your supplement doesn't offer any coverage on its own.  All it does is pay the 20% of Medicare-approved charges that you owe, on your behalf.  Medicare drives what gets covered and how much the provider gets paid, and the supplement just goes along for the ride.

My friend finished the insulation project and it looks really nice. It will be much easier to remove the panel and the insulation board to access the water filter now.  I helped with the clean up after she finished.

Then lots of work in the garage. I am almost done. It looks so much better with the boxes stacked on the shelves instead of piled up all over the floor. Still a fair amount of work to do, but the end is definitely in sight!

My back and knees are really aching from all the bending and lifting of the boxes. I might take today off and just do inside projects today. I'll see how the morning goes.

True, I've mentioned many times that I live in the Hartford, CT area. Which is a big area but that's about as much as I've narrowed it down. BTW, I don't live in a city, although we have so many bears around here now that they've been popping up in the cities too.

Once again you and I are in sync. I spent a lot of time doing work in my garage today doing more of my clothing swap, which extended to just general cleaning and straightening. After two days of this now my back is pretty sore. I also made a pot of chili yesterday which was more work than I needed. I think I'll take it easy tomorrow.

Oh and speaking of water filters, we just had a new filter installed in our water softener, lol.

Agree.  I live in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, 8.1 million people, we have three of the major trash/waste disposal in our area.  So whoever the city contracts with gets the business.  It changes over the years, it can even change each year.  As we have pickup twice a week and recycle once a week they do not offer trash cans, you have to provide your own.

Oh gosh. Our county leaves it to us to contract with our own trash collectors.  Sometime we have three different collections in a week.  Whenever the commissioners bring up the subject of a county trash contract one would think they are recommending beheadings!

Ours is the same plus one company comes by twice a week.  We have trucks four out of five weekdays. It seems there are always bins on the street except for weekends.

Working in the garage...almost done! And a big load of laundry kept me busy.  Plus I did some sorting in my office, for the crystal lady who usually comes on Mondays. But this morning, I got a text from her saying she wanted to come and "play" today too.  She just left about an hour ago that is why I am so late to post.

She is so high energy and mixed with putting each flat out for her to go through, it is a pretty tiring process. BUT, she is buying just about everything I get out so that is a good thing.  We just about emptied another whole rack today that I can now move to the garage.

Hopefully at some point today, I can just sit and rest and put my feet up!

@Yeah No the filter I am insulating is the one for my well water. Aside from that fine filter my water is really good straight out of the ground w/out softening.

As far as the garbage collection discussion, here in MT we do have a couple county companies that basically divide up the county, no overlap, for once a week pickup. No recycling. When I lived up in the Sierras in CA we had to take our garbage to the county dump.  We also had no home delivery for mail which we had to pick up at the PO. In CA we did have a septic tank, but fortunately we had city water which was really nice. Here in MT, I have both septic and a well for my water. Makes me sometimes wish for living in town......sometimes....not so often!  😸

Oh gosh. Our county leaves it to us to contract with our own trash collectors.  Sometime we have three different collections in a week.  Whenever the commissioners bring up the subject of a county trash contract one would think they are recommending beheadings!

We really have no county government in CT so everything is different from town to town and city to city. We have to have private trash collection in my town and most of the town is on well water. So much for services, but at least our real estate taxes are relatively low.

I remember as a small child when we lived in a small town, we had to take our trash to the dump.  I remember our dad backing the car up to the edge of a great big hole and then throwing the bags in.  I believe they have trash pickup now, but it wasn't until the last 20 years or so.

My next door neighbors, whose trash was being feasted on by that bear in the photo, always brought their trash to the dump until relatively recently. Now they use the same trash company we do but I guess they have some things to learn about making their garbage unappetizing to bears. My husband sprays our garbage with bleach spray and puts non-food garbage on top and that seems to work. Also we don't put our garbage out until as late as possible on the morning of trash day.

I think I forgot to add that we also had the UV filter changed that kills the germs in our well water. Thanks to living in nature we have a little bit of e-coli in our water. Unfortunately it's also very hard water, hence the water softening. We had that filter changed too. The softener works with huge bags of pellet salt. My scalp always knows when more salt needs to be put in the cannister as it does not react well to hard water. Also our appliances and furnace don't react well either. The lime and other minerals can gunk them up and cause problems.

Not the day I had planned, and I didn't accomplish what II had planned, but oh well... I did clear off another bookcase I can move into the garage for storing boxes.  So all was not lost. Plus I made some money! (:

Today, it is errands, garbage up the road, small grocery shopping, and PO. Then hopefully some work in the garage.  And just maybe make up my mind on a printer!!
