What's high for you guys?
We're on an island (Vancouver Island -- pretty big -- about a four hour drive from top to bottom-- and here in Victoria prices spiked to $1.69 a litre last month. They're down to $1.479 just now. That includes a nickel a litre to the city for mass transit.

Which is about $4.20US  a US gallon with exchange.

One of SIL's job perks is a company truck and the gas to keep it running.

DH drives a 2007 Honda Fit which uses about $40 in gas per month. (No commuting anymore) and I take the bus or walk.

As far as driving patterns are affected it is normally a big short term jump of maybe $0.20 or more suddenly say over a week. As it is California is more expensive than the other lower 48 states due to California only gasoline blends and the change over in formulas at the refineries which often seems to spark a refinery fire.

$4.20 a gallon for unleaded could be seen by the brand name stations  in the more expensive parts of the state right now while at the low end in metro LA of an independent station with lower real estate prices and being near refineries might be around $3.80 as I type this..

Last I filled up in my little corner of Oregon, it was $3.33 per gallon. Which - by comparison with you - is not bad. Especially since we don't pump our own gas.  I admit to being very spoiled - it is really, really nice not to have to get out of the car in bad weather, and more importantly, not to get my hands smelly. I'm not from Oregon - so this a pretty cool perk when we moved here.

It's $2.20 a gallon right now in the south central US where I live.

I was travelling through NJ. Stopped at Costco for gas. Shocked to find out that self-serve is prohibited within the state.

I thought Oregon was the only no-pump state. It's been decades since I was there, but Oregon also had no baggers in stores (you have to bag your groceries, big box store stuff, etc.), and Oregon was the only state (AFAIK) that permitted hitchhiking on the freeway.

ETA: Oregon was also first to legalize Death With Dignity/Assisted Suicide laws for the terminally ill.

There are baggers in the stores now, but in a few cities you have to bring your own bags.  I don't know about hitchhikers on the freeway, though I think I would have noticed if there were.

The reason I still recall the bagging and gas pumping is because a lot of folks in our town near the Oregon border used to shop there because:
No Sales Tax.     But higher property taxes.

Oregon was also first to legalize Death With Dignity/Assisted Suicide laws for the terminally ill.

No sales tax is great, indeed. Though for those who live here, there is a cost. (that is, in reduced public funds to repair infrastructure, etc.)

As for the higher property taxes, the rate is higher, but when we bought, the property was much lower, so we paid half of what we'd paid before. That's quite a while ago now, so I'm not sure that would still be the case for people moving here.

The Death with Dignity laws are pretty impressive too - and not as many use it as some fear.
