All Episodes Talk: Let’s Talk About Dr Phil the Show
Toaster Strudel replied to Lola16's topic in Dr. Phil
Drunken daughter who didn't want to come out, and needed Dr Phil to come back stage to talk to her was defeated, and surrendered fully. It brought tears to my eyes. Salty tears rolled down my cheeks, drying my epidermis. Thanks to Robin's hydrating creams, I can cry on Dr Phil, and continue to have radiant, moisturized skin. -
Molly & Luis: My Baby Does the Sanky Panky
Toaster Strudel replied to Drogo's topic in The Couples (Spoilers)
The juxtaposition of his extraordinarily inappropriate affect (the laughter and sticking his tongue out at the end was too much), the incongruity of his choice of counter-argument (completely unrelated to the matter being discussed), and the fact that this paranoid witchcraft/god/demons mythology is something that appeals to him as being true, to me is evidence of unhealthy, disordered thinking. He reminds me a bit of a couple of schizophrenics I've known. One was obsessed with Noam Chomsky, of all things. You could be talking about the weather, he'd start with his Chomsky conspiracy theories. You'd try to herd him back to the topic of weather, and he'd reply with more Chomsky paranoia-flavored ideas. He had a single affect: 'excitable' - that also reminds me of Luis' one affect, 'baked and IDGAF.' Maybe I'm putting too much weight on the similarities he has with these people I knew. Even his response to the question "before or after the marriage?" - "YES!" - he is not a sane person. If someone had a conversation like this with me, every alarm bell would ring in my head That is all I would need to hear to know 'not even dating material.' He's very off-putting. If I think about all of his behaviors, from his first interaction in the DR telling her he'll marry her, to telling her to her face he wants her kids shipped off to their dads, everything he does and says is dissonant, disjointed, and disturbing. -

I am not a mental health professional, nor do I know any personally. With this large caveat out of the way, I'll put it out there that I believe Luis is showing signs of mental illness. He went from "wow toilets and electricity" to: "You have the period, everything you say is crazy right now. Almost 90% is lie, incomprehensible. Here I just saw Buddha, I see every sh!t on the living room down, never see one Bible here. I never one something about god here, hmmmm? You know witchcraft? You understand that or you wanna understand. The hell say and the demons every time with angels the diamond is mean nothing. It's art! Why she have a lot of Buddha here, a lot of things with candles? The bird, why? That is something bad here? There is only two things, it's god or it's demon. The people have to understand that." "Answer this question, just this one. Why you have a lot of Buddha and why you don't have anything that mean you save you spirit about god here?" Molly, exasperated, shows him some crosses and tells him she does have bibles. But the continues to prattle non sequiturs: "I never see anything about god, why? You have every demon about the house." She points out his sins, he grins, unnervingly relaxed, and tells her "I like these things, very much." Molly screeches "I'm losing my mind" - no dear, you are dealing with a mentally ill individual. He smiles. "Finished? Are you finished?" She had found him on top of the bed sprawled out like an unruly teen. His affect is completely abnormal the entire time. And that the end, he sticks his tongue out, and he laughs so casually as to sound demented. Molly can make excuses because of his upbringing - but I don't have to. He's probably going to get worse. Deep down Molly probably realizes that she made a colossal mistake, but, sunk costs. She put her story on TV, applied for his visa, prepped her kids a bit, his family is coming, a wedding is planned. Backing out is too overwhelming. I predict this will be the shortest marriage on the show. "Like, I'm not here to take care of YOU. 'Make me a sandwich, make me some chicken, I don't like that chicken, I don't like this barber, that barber...'" that's going to get old fast, especially given that she is expecting Luis to take care of her, her kids, call her beautiful, etc. -

Whatever the opposite of charisma is, that woman had it in spades. I'm not even curious to know the truth, LOL. -

I wonder if the show would have happened if she had been truly ugly? Dr Phil interviews are usually duds and kidnapped model was a case in point. I just didn't care if her story is true or not. I couldn't make sense of anyone's motives. Maybe the guy was just a perv and there was no selling people. Who knows. That woman made for terrible TV, except for the tin foil high heel boots. -

Feel free to delete the rapper episode un-watched. The show is a complete waste of time with a male 'rapper' version of cash-me-ousside and the last quarter is TD Jake religious propaganda. -
Nicole & Azan: Supersize My Tagine
Toaster Strudel replied to Drogo's topic in The Couples (Spoilers)
Nicole physically abusing Azan was some of the most disturbing television I've ever watched. She complains about Azan's objections to her yelling. "Unfortunately that's a little normal for some Americans" - then she complains that he talks about how Americans behave as a group based on her behavior! She does it herself. Worryingly, Azan points out that "I'm sure if there is no camera, you're not this way" which I interpret (based on context) to mean that she's much worse when the cameras aren't rolling. Then there is this golden nugget of abuser-speak: "you just freakin' bring it out of me" - textbook victim blaming. He's shutting down to make sure he doesn't respond in ways that will escalate the situation and send him to jail yet she just goes on and on with insults, victim blaming and unproductive griping. This is a pretty nebulous list of complaints with little insight, but I'll give a shot at understanding it. She says that she hides to her family how bad the relationship is, and he should do the same for her, with his family. Except that it's hard for him, given that his whole family is witnessing the mess, including how lazy and abusive Nicole is, so they probably complain about her (about being a horrible person) in ways where he has no counter argument to offer. "He can't see me the way I am" - that means he is not giving her the behavioral reward she expected after sending him cash. As for everything she says drawing an insult... maybe he realizes that he hates her and wants her to go home? Then we have the "it's not fair" complaints: "It's not fair for him to be distrustful to me because I cheated on him. Yeah I pushed him but the way he talks to me, it's not fair!" It's not fair it's not fair it's not fair... but she invalidates his 100% justifiable reason not to trust her, and is making excuses for pushing him, again, by blaming the victim. What a bully. A bully and a loser. At last, he talks to her and begins a sentence. She mows him down immediately: "NO NO NO NO NO" wagging her finger. He tries to talk over her a little bit, but gives up. Every. Time. At some point, one hand on her hip and looking down on him with his crossed arms and averted gaze, she grabs his chin to lift up his face to force him to look at her, and when she's done, she lowers her hand with a little sassy motion. I found this extraordinarily disturbing in terms of the body language of abuse and domination. Once again, she complains that he's not talking, and yet at the same time as she tries to beat him into talking, she pre-emptively shuts up him by telling him "don't try to tell me... blah blah blah" The pushing and shoving was really uncomfortable to watch. It's difficult to snark on, because it's so not funny. She uses her whole ample body to intimidate the guy. We didn't see it in the final cut, but in the previews they showed her physically intimidating him inside the bus by doing that American specialty of 'talking in someone's face' rocking her head back and forth with sassy arm motions, then feigning to hit him. Once in the house, she is a little rough with May, barking quickly "stop! quit!" but overall she turns into a kitten. Now she's telling Azan to 'please' talk to her, and she lets him close the door gently without pushing. Then she talks to the camera and puts on the sweet little misunderstood victim act. She is a monster. -

I'm totally with you on the outrage about the 'mother' who was a veritable monster. I'm glad they were laughing after they killed Gypsy's cruel tormentor. The medical profession really dropped the ball. Did they care only about the profits? How did doctors end up installing a feeding tube, for years, in a healthy person? It's really sad that she was born into a hostage situation with her own mother as her captor, and then she ends up in jail. How else could she have escaped? She couldn't call the police, alert a doctor... she was branded as developmentally delayed. -
Are you guys getting new epis? I'm stuck on 2014 repeats for the past two weeks.

Another reason he might have given up is that it turned out that Kevin was real, an actual pastor, at a large, properly built orphanage with happy dancing, singing children welcoming the crew in an idyllic setting. Kevin was all sweetness and light and sounded really genuine - totally unfazed by Dr $hill berating him for wooing a married woman. Maybe the silent, grinning wife had spent enough time in a religious straight jacket, indoctrinating four children at home so that they avoid the secular influence of school, being reminded that her husband literally owns her because God had handed her over to him. The lure of being seen instead as someone who is sexually desirable and has her own sexual feelings is probably not something she is being rational about. It won't be the first couple with 4 children that divorces. $hill asked her to remove herself from Kevin for 90 days; I doubt she lasted 90 seconds. -

I'm just squeaking by this bar and can confirm!

He also took her morning wine mug away and told her to lay off the vino... maybe he could disappear for 24 hours? Oh right, he already tried that, and it didn't work.

Annie & David: On An Allowance at 48? He's Good, I Think
Toaster Strudel replied to Drogo's topic in The Couples (Spoilers)
Something is dodgy. Chris & David (who thinks it's cooler to call himself 'Tobo') seem to operate some tourist guide business in Thailand. They produced a video shilling themselves for a reality series where they would cater to a guest's Thai fantasy. It wasn't picked up, maybe because of lack of ladyboys in the sales pitch. That's my theory! Some gems: "Tobo gets on my last nerve. He's like an itch you can't get rid of." "Party, drink too much, do Tobo stuff." "Tobo, sit down." "It's my way, it's the Tobo way." Below is the link, please don't hold it against me. -

Molly & Luis: My Baby Does the Sanky Panky
Toaster Strudel replied to Drogo's topic in The Couples (Spoilers)
It looks like she isn't allowed to drive. She needs her daughter to drive her to the airport. Her brother needs to drive her to the restaurant. And she has an alcoholic's puffy face. This is a woman who went to the Dominican Republic, met a barman while drinking, and fell for his first line to her, 'one day I will marry you.' She was probably hitting the bottle pretty hard to think the barman was genuinely in love with her. Something pinged me with her daughter. The daughter was mothering the mother, doing her personal grooming (Molly should do her own effin' makeup). She had a real sadness about her, like her mother had disappointed her many, many times. Molly wouldn't acknowledge anything, she poopoo'd her by repeating a vague mantra 'everything will be OK' - and when that didn't work, she just shrugged, 'and if thinks are not OK, we'll see then.' Can you imagine how this young woman felt, when her alcoholic mother got drunk abroad, and returned home announcing her plan to marry a barman from the resort, that's half her age? After being with him for two weeks? She's probably the one who's going to have to drunksit Mommy Dearest, be her shrink, and clean up after her bad decisions. And who knows, maybe Luis is another alcoholic. -
It would serve her right for being so gullible. But he said he'd marry her the moment he laid eyes on her! What could go wrong?
