  1. TER and AA are going to be hosting The BET Awards this weekend. I only have Roku now I can't watch. I would only be watching for them since I don't watch awards shows much (well, at all) any more.
  2. I haven't seen the movie (*hangs head*) but I did read some stuff about the controversy over the protrayal of LBJ. I came across this article about those criticisms that I thought I'd share: http://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2015/01/10/376081786/selma-backlash-misses-the-point
  3. Ah, yes! That's why I can agree with a lot of the songs you guys have listed. *hangs head* My current on is 'Trap Queen' by Fetty Wep (sp?). First off, what kind of name is that? Second, there are lines in it about her working a pole and about making drugs. Yet! Yet, every damn time it comes on, I start dancing. I'm usually in the care so I'm dancing in my seat. It's getting to the point where I'm almost tired of hearing it so I'll be posting about it soon in another thread.
  4. I haven't see the first one. I know. I don't how that happened. I plan to see if before I go to see this one. I might even have to go myself. I love the song Pony and I have since middle school/high school. I can't remember when it came out. Every time I hear it, I remember watching it on my grandparent's big screen TV on MTV before going off to school. Hopefully, I'll have a new memory to associate with it.
  5. I'm looking forward to this because I don't read the comics so it's intriguing to me having Batman and Superman not like each other. I don't mind it being dark. Based on the synposis, it being dark makes sense. I do hope though it's not dark for darkness' sake. There should be purpose. The best example I can think of off the top of my head is Batman with Michael Keaton. It was dark enough for the audience to know Gotham had issues and yet light enough to have comedy. I liked both of the Nolan Batman movies I saw (the first two) and Man of Steel. I didn't think either of them were too dark and gritty. I acutally appreciated the new take on Superman as that's a story I had never seen before. In my mind, it wouldn't be as light as the other Superman movies.
  6. I saw the trailer with my son the other day. He asked me to play it over and over (we have Roku). I'm usually up in arms somewhat about childhood classics being tinkered with in some way. This thought? I couldn't help but smile and can't wait to take him to see it. I don't mind Charlie Brown being a winner. Everyone deserves have to at least be a winner once.
  7. I've never sat down to watch this show. I usually put on Food Network or HGTV for background noise on Saturday and Sunday mornings while making breakfast. I like the show. I don't pay much attention unless something peaks my interest so I haven't noticed what a lot of you are saying annoys you. Well, except for Jeff's maturity. Yeah, sometimes that can be a bit much. He seems so likable though that it doesn't really bother me. I did wonder why Katie talks like. I waz trying to place her accent until one day she said she's from West Virginia. I have found some of segments to be useful. The recipes do seem to be pretty basic, at least the ones I remember. I'm hardly ever home to watch The Chew. From the view episodes I've seen, the shows have a lot in common. But they are different shows and I think that has to do with the interaction between the hosts and the energy of the show. The live audience does change things.
  8. ITA. I happen to see him on the Bill Maher show a week or so back. I was glad to see him again. Incognegro! My friends and I have been saying that for years but not to cover a situation like Rachel Dolezal's. "Who brings pizza rolls to a Juneteenth cookout?" had the hubby and I dying. I thought the one at B.E.T. was going to get called out for being incognegro during that part of the show. Donald Trump is a straight up a-hole. Yes! He is a gift from the comedy gods. I look forward to Jon's and Larry's take on his nonsense.
  9. In this case though, Hulk destroyed that part of the city because Wanda messed with his head. So Ultron's team caused that destruction. So it's disingenious to be up in arms about hearoes destroying the city in this case. So he was wrong in this instance and, like you said, intent does matter.
  10. If I hear "Worth It" by The Weeknd (not a typo), I'm going to scream. I liked it at first. Now it's playing every time I turn on the radio.
  11. That's is hilarious! I can see this happening on a Key & Peele or SNL. Just taking it to the extreme with the gender and racial issues.
  12. I saw a trailer for this and was like, "Oh, no!" It seemed to be a reboot. Why? I haven't seen any Terminator movies since T2. I loved the showed, at least the part before the writer's strike (at least I think that's what happened). I'm all for reboots if they look promising, then the "why" doesn't really matter. This doesn't looke promising for a couple of reasons. - Arnold. 'Nuff said. - It's a reboot so they can cast who they want to play Sarah. And Linda in T1 was Linda in T2 lookswise. At least in T1 thought she looked like an adult. EC may be 27 but she doesn't look like it and it's offputting to a certain degree.
  13. The hubby and I got to see this over the weekend. I know nothing about the comics so I didn't know that Hawkeye had a famliy. Not knowing that made it feel out of place in the place. I didn't totally buy it. I also didn't totally buy the romance between Natasha and Bruce. The acting was fine, the writing was fine, something just felt off to me. Those two SLs aren't helped by me being a Clint/Natasha shipper. I absolutely hated the Iron Man v. Hulk scenes in Africa. I don't remember where they were located. I hated it because the movie isn't supposed to be them fighting (though maybe this is set up for Civil War?) and it went on for way too long. That's time that could've been spent on something else. I know the point was to show how bad Wanda f'ed Bruce up. It was, again, way too damn long. S.H.I.E.L.D. hires the fastest huilders known to man! How much time passed? I like Don Cheadle yet I don't like him as Rhodey. I don't believe for one second his Rhodey and Tony are friends. (Other relationships I don't get? Jane and Thor. Can they please recast the part? Chris and Natalie don't make sense as a couple on a couple of different levels.) You'd think I know James Spader's voice by now. I kept wondering who he was? Can someone explain to me how Jarvis wasn't really dead and he was defeating Ultron or whatever Tony said? Over I liked it. I was expecting not to and to being utterly confused based on what I heard about it. It was entertaining and it made sense to me even if I have fanwank a couple of things.
  14. I really like this show. I like every character, with Jessica being my favorite, followed by Louis. My husband about died every time Jessica came on looking like the character from Mortal Kombat. I was kind of surprised that Jessica took the "we don't see you as Asian" so well. I would've thought she would've been pissed at them rather than take it as they are no longer connecting to their heritage. I think my favorite part of the episode was Brian/Topanga exchange at the cultural fair. I'm glad it's being renewed.
  15. Didn't Bow say in a previous episode she pretended to be Pacific Islander to get a scholarship? I can see the Rachel Dolezar situation as a SL as a very fair skinned black person being questioned by Dre as being black enough. Like this person gets a job Dre thinks he should've gotten because he's "blacker" or Dre thinking the person is white and not understannding why the person is so into "black" culture. The story about Mindy kaling's brother is ridiculous because he's ridiculous, at least based on that story. A) Based on what I remember from studying affirmative action in college, how it's practiced is not how it's supposed to be practiced. So he shouldn't have gotten into great schools with mediocre grades. B) It sounds like he didn't get into any schools because he was "black" yet had mediocre grades. C) Him saying other groups don't benefits from affirmative action is wrong from what I remember from college.
  16. TER and the girls are in the issue of Essence with Shonda Rhimes, Issa Rae, Debbie Allen, Mara Brock-Akil and Ava DuVernay on the cover. They are featured in spot on how they take care of their natural hair on the show. Marsai's (Diane) hair is pressed; not relaxed. Yara's hair is straight, at least that the impression I got, so they twist it to get the curls.
  17. The most recent episode I've seen was a Jewish couple that kept kosher so they had to have 2 of everything in the house. Their budge was $935K. This is about the second or third episode I've seen where the couple has a ridiculous (i.e., very healthy) budget and still can't find a home that everything they want. Total BS! I know they live in high priced areas, still. I can't see why they can't find a house they want within their budget without having to do a renovation. I feel like these couples just want a reno and someone to pay for it. So if that's the case, go on a show where you can just get the reno done w/o the "oh, we can't find a house with huge budget we have because our taste are just so expensive!" *eye roll* The first home doesn't have to the "one". I know moving is a pain but if you're only moving every so often (before you start a family, after you start a family so you need a bigger house, etc.), it's not that big a deal. I say that as someone that moves every 2-3 years due to military service so... In this episode, this was the first time that I can recall a buyer actually saying to Jonathan, "I know this isn't your first rodeo, we are just having a hard time seeing it." Most of the time the homeowners act like Jonathan can't do what he says like they've been living under a rock or something.
  18. 4leafclover already covered the "acting white" and "white taste in decor". She involved in a love triangle with Fitz and Edison. Now was it on the same level as her/Jake v. her/Fitz? No. But it happened. To tie this back to the show, I'm not sure how any of them has anything to say about the "whiteness" of Olivia Pope considering Bow is biracial and the whole point of the show is "what does it mean to be black in this new place and time?"
  19. I loved Ruby's face about the sandwich and Bow dancing at the possibility of no more Ruby. I was about to start dancing myself. Pops may treat Rainbow the same way but Bow lets him get away with it, doesn't get her the same way Ruby does, is either Pops treats his own son that way and/or underneath is a geniune affection for Bow. Like he knows his son married up but he's not going to be all about his feelings and what not. I say he may treat her like that because I never thought of it that way. I have a gay cousin and my husband had a gay uncle. It's seriously "don't ask, don't tell" and it doesn't make any sense so I definitely related to this episode. I'm glad that Dre was willing to kick Ruby out his life. I was shocked. I wish he would have some of that backbone when it comes to Bow and his mom.
  20. She's supposed to be a realistic protrayal, and yet I don't know any teens, save for 1-2, that act like that. Granted, TV tends to exagerate things. Agreed the actress is beautiful. I'm sure the longer the show goes on, we'll get something.
  21. I'm a fan of the show because it's funny. Most of the time I like the way they handle real life situations. It helps that in some way I can relate to something in every episode. I think you have to watch the earlier episodes to get the name of the show. I love the show All in the Family. The similarities between that show and this show are very minor in my opinion so I can see how this show can exist today. Dre does come off a hypocrite a lot of times. I think that's the point. He sees his world one way and everyone else, to include the audience, sees it differently, i.e., the way it really is. Sometimes he has to get kicked in the pants to see that. I don't think the show is hypocritical.
  22. Loved this episode! It was hilarious that Bow just couldn't quite grasp Junior being a Republican. At first, I thought she would be okay with it, as in "let him figure this out on his own". Her and Ruby not getting it at first is just like Ruby not getting her daughter is gay despite much evidence to the contrary. Sometime people just don't want to get it. Besides Idris Elba, Ruby and Bow can agree on none of the kids being Democrats. I knew Junior was joining because of a girl. Nice to see Bumper "Clarence the so fine" Robinson. I was disappointed the girl's mom turned out to be that kind of Republican. Don't get me started on people that think that like that. 'Let him talk? Can he talk? Can my man talk?' is something the hubby and I are about to start saying when we are talking. It's just ridiculous. I agree that the show did a great job of making both sides look crazy. I want to point out the obliviousness of Dre's boss talking about his Uncle Tom. It's like how can you not know that "Uncle Tom" is a bad thing? White privilege in the flesh. After watching this episode though, I wondered why the fact that Sarah Palin is Diane's hero was not mentioned? SmithW6079, I agree with you on the Gurkel thing.
  23. I presumed it was the dad beating Danny. If that kind of stuff happend enough times, I can see Danny becoming the black sheep and him asking John to ask dad if he can come back. If things like that are the reason why Danny has become the black sheep, I can see why the mom gives him chance after chance and I can see why John says he loves him, wants him back and told Kevin and Meg what Danny did for him (presume protection). There doesn't seem to be a huge age gap between Kevin and John and them with Meg, so why don't they (Kevin and Meg) understand why Danny is the way he is? I would think they would be a little more forgiving? We shall see. I watched the first two episodes back to back. I'm trying not to binge.
  24. ally862, I know what you mean. As I was watching, I said to myself, "She's not Connie!" That's not a dig on Jacinda since I've always liked her well enough in what she's done since TRW. (IIRC, I didn't liker her much for some reason on that show. Maybe I thought she was annoying or something.) I can't believe she's 42!
  25. I took Pop's comment about "marrying up" as "you did better for yourself by marrying someone white." I couldn't tell if he felt like she did it just to marry someone white or because she loved him or some combo of the two. Giving that they were both hippies, I'd say it was for love and there probably weren't a lot of black male hippies so the dating pool would've had more whites than blacks. "Marrying up" is real, then and now. The last thing anyone assumes my husband is, is black. I'm clearly an African-American female. Some paperwork at work identified him as white though he clearly told him he was black. When we found that out, I told him, "Don't change it. Do you know what this means? We can get a house, a car, whatever else with no problem. Our credit is going to be perfect!" I always joke I get the best of both worlds. I love The AV's Club take on it. Perfect description. Pretty I've had to justify my blackness every now and then from because of the way I talk, the music I listen to, the food I eat, where I grew up, where I went to school. My kids look like me but have my husband's coloring so unless things get better, they'll have to do the same. Anyway, back to the show. Bow calls Dre out on his narrow definition of blackness, but it's always on the sly or he straight up ignores her because he's ranting about whatever has him riled up. He finally got it in the code switching epsiode. I really hope he doesn't have amnesia and starts acting a fool again. Speaking of acting a fool, Zoey telling Bow to go away in the The Peer-ent Trap episode. I wish there had talked about that a bit as I know my black mama (because I know my mama) wouldn't have allowed me to speak to her that way. Despite Bow's mom letting her put a fork in a socket, I have to wonder if she would've tolerated that kind of disrespect. I mean she was D'Alicia from Memphis before she was Alicia involved in some cult. (I forget which episode Bow says her parents aren't in a cult anymore.) There is the idea that white parents would let there kids talk to them like that. It would've been interesting to see if the show went with the stereotype about white parents v. black parents or was more reflective of reality, that parents of all shades some times let their kids get away with too much. I remember sitting about a African-American mother and daughter at some event. The daughter basically told her mother to f-off. I about died that she said that and that her mother didn't knock her out. My mother certainly would've.
