  1. Did we get a good one? I can't wait. This season started strong but hasn't had much going on lately.
  2. I don't know; I just can't get my dander up because someone who is poor has an iDevice. I don't know their circumstances. Maybe someone bought it for them or extended their credit to them. Maybe, like me, they won an iPad in a raffle. Maybe they bought it when their situation was different. Maybe it didn't cost them anything due to a promotion. Who knows? Now if a person goes on JJ to complain because they signed a bunch of people up for their plan and now can't afford to pay the ETF, that's a different story, and they're fair game.
  3. When I was shopping for a second car, you couldn't find a $1,500 car at a dealer. It may be different in other places, but used cars I saw at dealerships here were all above the $5,000 price. My price point was $7,500, and I still ended up buying private party from a seller on Craigslist.
  4. It didn't go well for Palin when she was on. I don't know if being on the show can help a candidate, but I know being on it did the opposite for Palin. She looked like a complete idiot, especially when Amy was rapping about her. I didn't know Hillary was going to be there, so I was as excited when she turned around as the audience sounded.I couldn't hear Miley when she did her first performance. It was as if her mic was off.
  5. For some people, a cheap beater car they find on Craigslist is the only option they have. When you live in a place where you need a car to get to work you take any car you can get. Unfortunately it becomes a cycle. The car breaks down because it's old as Methuselah and you need money to fix it, but you can't make it to work to earn that money because the car is broken down. A bank account is almost impossible to get if you've ever bounced a check, regardless of fault. I had a paycheck bounce that caused several checks to bounce because I'd had the audacity to be poor and living check to check. Although my employer paid back all my fees from it, and there were a lot of fees, I ended up in the Telechex system. Even though the bank knew it was a payroll check that bounced and caused all of this, they still added me to that damn list. And once your name is in the Telechex system, you're sunk. Good luck getting a bank account after that. I wanted to find another bank, but with my name was in that system, I was treated like a loser and a criminal each time I tried to open a new bank account. It took a long freaking time to clear my name. Now, I'm a tenacious sort who eventually got it fixed, but how many people would just give up and stop using banks altogether after that ordeal? Banks have better lobbyists than poor people do. I was watching an insurance video (not by choice, it's my industry) and they were discussing the exorbitant rates for car insurance in Detroit. We're talking $5,000 a year for shitty coverage on a shitty car. So a lot of people there register their cars in out-of-town relatives' names so that they can afford insurance. Yes, they're committing fraud, but the alternative is a bunch of people with no insurance at all. And instead of looking at the crazy no fault laws that have caused the rates to be insane, it's easier to blame the poor folks who can't afford to live elsewhere. Insurance companies have better lobbyists than poor people, too. It is very expensive to be poor in this country. I've been there, so I can empathize. Yes, a lot of poor folks make poor decisions that help keep them poor, but let's not forget that there are a lot of companies that prey on them and not a lot of laws to protect them.
  6. They were both annoying, but she is the type of tenant that makes me never want to rent out my house. She can't be arsed to pay her rent but knows how to call code enforcement. Whether or not the violations were valid, she didn't seem to mind any of them until she was getting the boot. It's like people who rent an illegal apartment and then call foul once they're dragged to court for not paying. She's also a funky money who'd rather bypass showering for a few days and lose her job than find somewhere to take a shower. It's no wonder she has no friends. Girlfriend is rank. MM suggested a cheap motel. She could have gone to a truck stop and gotten a very cheap shower. Her sense of entitlement was through the roof. And of course she was pregnant. If you can't scrape enough money together to live on your own and pay rent, bringing another life into the world makes perfect sense. Actually, once she has that baby, I'm sure me, Judge Judy, and Byrd will be supporting her. I know, I know; wrong show. She's another litigant I wish had gone on JJ, if for no other reason than that JJ would have tossed her ass out the second she finished her stupid podiatrist claim. She's ridiculous!
  7. My tolerance for stuff is pretty high, but I do not want to see any episode of JJ in which this actually happens! The defendant did seem overly-proud of his dog's destructive abilities.
  8. I love Orphan Black, although I thought the first season was much better than the second.) I was thrilled to see a question about it on Jeopardy but not very surprised that it was a TS. I've introduced several friends to the show, and most of them had never even heard of it before I started suggesting that they give it a try. I missed Part of Five, which I never watched but should have gotten right. For some reason, I said My So Called Life. Wow. I also missed the highest-valued clue in the category, but I can't remember what it was now.
  9. I came here to post about this too. That's the epitome of unsportsmanlike conduct, or whatever the Jeopardy Gods would rule such an infraction. I've gone back and forth and tried to find a way to enjoy this obviously knowledgable player, and I just can't anymore. The slow playing is the nail in the coffin for me. (I'm sure he couldn't care less.) But as a viewer I despise it, and I can't imagine any of the many champs I've liked over the years sinking to that level. I can't even imagine some of my least favorite champs doing it. I disliked Arthur Chu immensely, and I can't see him doing that. I didn't like Roger Craig but can't picture him doing it either. I won't stop watching. I did that when Chu was on and also when Colby was on. But jeopardy is my favorite show. It's part of my evening routine, and I miss it when I don't watch. So, other than Kids' Week, I won't boycott it anymore.
  10. Don't forget, it was also predicated on the dealership making the deal they wanted. I don't know about you, but I'd NEVER make any plans contingent on a car dealer! I tried to use the car buying service my bank offers last fall. I knew exactly what I wanted, down to color, trim level, and options. It was supposed to simplify the process. In theory, I'd go to the dealership with my loan approval already in hand and they'd sell it to me at the pre-negotiated price. Three weeks and three dealerships later, plus two instances of me storming out of a dealership in a huff, I finally had the car I wanted at a better price than I'd even planned on getting, at 0% interest. What a freaking nightmare that process was, filled with empty promises, silver-tongued finance guys, and a salesman who actually cussed me out when I told him I'd already bought the car from a dealership in another city because I got tired of the runaround the two dealerships where I live were giving me. Where was I? Oh yeah, these litigants also made their shit show contingent on a dealership coming through with the deal they wanted. Brilliant.
  11. So I wasn't the only one who noticed that. Sometimes it was blurred ala Survivor and sometimes it wasn't. That was strange.
  12. I agree. Last week's was just okay for me and this one was meh. I liked the singing scene at the table, but the rest of the episode fell flat for me. I loved this show last year, so I don't know if it's me or the show, but I'm just not finding it as funny this season. I hope that changes and will stick with it for a while; when the show is good it's very good.
  13. I think that was because Bow was complaining about his aim, or lack of aiming ability. So he, apparently, sits to pee since he can't control where it goes. I thought this was another great episode, especially since my ex and I had a similar ongoing debate about guns in the home. We never did come to an agreement about it.
  14. Maybe it's because I also see reruns, but it seems we've had quite a few cases of people suing over custom-made clothes they ordered. Does that ever go well? The plaintiff is always saying the clothes weren't done on time and it ruined whatever event they were planning to wear the clothes at. The defendant always complains that the plaintiff is being unreasonable, and there was some unforeseen emergency that forced them to miss the deadline. Lather, rinse, repeat. In the case about the Mercedes versus Range Rover trade plus cash deal, that was a convoluted mess. I'm still not sure I understand what happened. But in my experience, if you have about $5 grand to spend on a used car, you're better off not buying a luxury one. They're crazy expensive to repair. Do people think those cars are more reliable just because of the brand? I think they'd be better served by getting a not-as-used Toyota, Honda, Chevy, etc. The parts for those cars are ubiquitous, so the repairs cost less than they would for a Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Range Rover, etc. One of the litigants said she couldn't finish paying until her taxes came in. Why not just buy a $4,000 car instead of committing to $6,000 when you don't even have all the money up front? I don't know why I'm so astounded that a court show litigant would be fiscally irresponsible. If they weren't, we'd lose three quarters of the cases we see.
  15. That's why she was so pissed off when she lost. She thought she'd pulled one over on a naive person who didn't know anything about real estate, but JJ saw right through her. JJ has a lot of contempt for people who don't pay rent, regardless of the reason. So the plaintiff was already behind the eight ball when the case started. Even if the agreement were for her to be repaid for work on the house and live rent-free, only an idiot wouldn't get that in writing. And then the same idiot, who is a real estate agent and should know better, signed a lease in which she agreed to pay $1,800 a month. That's just pants-on-the-head stupid. I mean, what if she'd spent a million dollars renovating the house? Wouldn't a contract require something much more specific than, she's just going to pay me for what I spend to fix the house? I loved her cross-talk to the defendant after the ruling. It went something like: Plaintiff: I hope you're happy. Defendant: I am very happy. Me: I love it!
  16. You think Alex hates him? I haven't really thought about that or noticed anything. I know Alex called him impressive, which he is. Maybe if I watch through the lens of Alex hating him I'll enjoy his run a little more!
  17. Same here, minus the apology. Since we're all entitled to our opinions and come here to share them, I won't apologize for liking or disliking a contestant, nor will I expect any of you to.I really liked that band sports team name category. I wasn't sure what it was going to be, but once they got into it, I thought it was great. Sports and music are strong categories for me (despite my lack of knowledge about The Band) so I ran this one. I though this missing letter category had potential but was way too easy. Anyone else completely relieved to see a New York Times category that wasn't all video clues featuring its writers? I hate video clues read by other people, so I was thrilled these were read by Alex.
  18. If I ever need to hire a private investigator, I think instead I will just ask my fellow boardies here to get on the case. Good sleuth-work!
  19. I wondered that too. Didn't they cut to commercial and then she was gone? Or am I mis-remembering?
  20. He's more of a start-in-the-middle-of-the-board guy. Then he seems to work is way down to the higher-valued clues.
  21. I had to turn that one off. I hate dog cases anyway, so if you combine a dog case with that kind of voice, I just can't do it.I sometimes carry a walking stick while walking my dog because there are a few dogs in my neighborhood that constantly get out and roam, and we walk really early to avoid the Arizona heat; it's usually still dark outside when we start. I also have a wash that runs behind my house, and sometimes there are coyotes back there. I'd have no qualms about beating a loose dog that tried to attack mine.
  22. The guy who sang Word Up sounded like he was going to have an asthma attack. I like Cameo as well but think that was a terrible song choice for an audition. I know we've discussed this before, but I would rather they show everyone who made it than the long back stories and people who got no chair turns. It's unfair to singers who make the cut to stick them in a montage. I tried to imagine my parents quitting their jobs to focus on my "career" at the age of nine and couldn't. They came to as many of my sporting events, school shows, concerts, and debates as they could, but they still had lives, jobs, and friends of their own. It would have creeped me out to have them looking to me as a meal ticket. I almost forgot, I really disliked the guy who said something about southern men feeling like they have to take care of their women. I'm all for treating your spouse well, but she should be your partner, not your dependent or your possession. He also mentioned being home-schooled and buying a Creed album as his first secular album, so I shouldn't be surprised that he sounds like a character from the 1950s.
  23. Other than his volume, which wasn't as bad Monday, Matt didn't bother me as much yesterday. He's just an intense player. His starting in the middle doesn't irk me either since he seems to stay in a category once he picks it. I don't like his stepping on Alex while Alex is speaking just because I find that to be rude, but I don't think Matt is Vern aware he's doing it; he really just came to play. It was a tough game for me. I didn't do well in botanists and had no clue on FJ. I've heard of The Band but am not familiar with their music. Based on what some of you have posted, it sounds like I need to check them out. I like classic rock, but the station I listen to seems to think there were only about ten bands back then and plays the same stuff over and over.
  24. My mother is 74 and looks amazing and has more energy than I do. Seriously we went on vacation recently, and she wore me out. So when I see a 72-year-old woman who looks that way it makes me sad. I understand she has health issues, but she did not look good at all. No teeth, smacking her lips together to make that awful sound, sitting there in her nightgown? It doesn't look like anyone is taking care or her at all. I'd have pegged her for at least a decade older than my mom, and probably more. The defendant has managed to manipulate the mother and seems to be just waiting for her to die so she can collect more money and waste it on more bullshit. She blew up her relationship with her siblings for plastic surgery and a BMW? She was vile; her husband was vile; the mother was vile too. If she's mentally competent, she should be able to control herself in a courtroom. I'm generally not an advocate of disowning one's family, but I think the plaintiff should do just that. She has to be better off without them. It sounds like there's a bother who has already figured that out. Then we get the thin-skinned actor who sleeps on a bare mattress to save money on sheets. I can't even with these litigants today. I can't imagine sleeping on a new mattress without sheets, much less a used one. Gross.
