Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
Laura Holt replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
The one near us closed years ago. It was one of my Mom's favourites and we always had a nice meal when we went there. I found it odd to see that it was the butt of so many jokes on sitcoms. I never quite understood why. -

Didn't understand or did and didn't care? Either way what a totally sucky thing for the owner to do! -
Total agreement but the problem is $$. When we gave our kids swimming lessons I'd have loved to get them one on one but we simply couldn't pay the extra cost. That said, at least where we sent them, the class topped out at IIRC 5 kids, 10 seems insane to me for beginner swimming!

We got out of the habit of eating out during the pandemic (like lots of others) and I don't know if it's the quality of the food or not but we've gotten really picky about where we're prepared to go now. I'm no Julia Child but if I can cook it better why would I go out and pay someone else to serve me an inferior meal?? So restaurants are serving smaller portions (which isn't all that bad an idea), poorer quality, and they are charging, in some cases, more than twice as much. Seems like a pretty bad business plan to me! -

Where are you eating that 10% is anywhere close to a dollar?? Nowhere near where I live that's for sure! My pet peeve is restaurant prices right now. I totally get that prices for groceries, gas, etc have all gone up and will get passed on to the consumer - but there's mark up and then there's come on, people, seriously???? Had breakfast out at a mom and pop place near the place we visit every summer and an egg/bacon/toast and coffee that went for $6.99 last year is going for $15.99. That's insane. -

I thought of that, but these are local commercials and schools here go back in September (I think the French board does go back in August but it's the last week of August). I haven't been in school myself for awhile now! but I still shudder at the idea of going back to school in August - and I liked school! -

It's July 24th and the back to school commercials have already started. Come on! Is there a child in this world who is pushing mom or dad to take them back to school shopping 5-6 weeks before school starts up again? If there is that child is not related to me. -
I didn't get a chance to see it yet but it's on my Must Watch list and I have a feeling it will be money well spent just for these lines!

My son had a Cabbage Patch kid that he called Baby (he still has it) but Barbies? So not interested. He was actually pretty awful - he liked pulling their heads off. The poor things ended up with very short necks as the heads never fit back on properly.

It was getting less and less true by the time the Brady Bunch aired, of course, but it was close to a time when having live-in help wasn't just for the rich.

Family Ties: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

My mother always used to say there were two kinds of people - those who, when a baby cries, feel the compulsion to reach for the baby to try to comfort them and then those who look for the nearest exit. I doubt this is completely true, of course, but IME it's not wrong either. I wanted children, not a lot of children, but a few (husband wanted 6, so not happening!) And I was really lucky I had great kids. If they majorly messed up as teens they made sure I never found out! But that said being a grandparent is WAY better! -

Do You Consider Yourself A Feminist?: Why Or Why Not?

It's a silly trend that will probably die off in terms of special restaurant choices pretty soon but I know I'm not the only "girl" who eats differently when I eat alone. My husband is going camping next week end and I am looking forward to eating what I want, when I want and some of that probably is "girl dinner" but probably not the chicken parm I am ordering from our local restaurant that is soooo soooo good. -

Has anyone dealt with a family member developing mobility issues but refusing to use a cane or zimmer frame (walker) or any other aid that would mean he might not fall? My brother is only in his 50s and he feels that using anything like this is admitting to being old. I get it, I really do, but working in a hospital I see people a lot younger than him (as in kids for godssake) having to use mobility aids. I'm at a loss for what to say to encourage him at this point. -

Dylan Sprouse got married ... and now I feel very old. -
I just burned a pot of potatoes (I found them just before the smoke alarm did!) and now the house just stinks. The reason this is not in pet peeves is because when my husband called to tell me he was on his way home I told him about the culinary disaster and he is bringing home take out. Rewarding me for almost letting the house burn down (ok slight exaggeration) is probably not wise on his part but I'm good with it 😄.

It's also not hurting the hype that a few prominent people have come out condemning it - nothing gets attention like people trying to tell you not see (or read) something. I know I've got a few friends who were not interested in the Barbie movie at all and they're now planning their week-end around it!

We had recruiters come to my high school when I was in grade 10 - things may have changed but back then you only needed grade 10 to join. They painted a rosy picture of military life. Luckily I come from a family with a lot of military - non-coms as well as officers so no way was I buying their con job! -
Best thing my son ever did for me was put that on my laptop. It's always a shock when I use my Amazon Fire to see ads. It's the way my granddaughter acts when she's over and watches our cable TV. "What are those, Nana?" whenever a commercial comes on!

In the karma will get you dept. I am at my front window watching my neighbor's car get towed away. We have been having street work done and there are multiple signs on the street that no parking is allowed. Buddy next door (he who partied all through the pandemic) does not believe rules apply to him. He has just learned otherwise. I admit it, I am smiling.

A Case Of The Mondays: Vent Your Work Spleen Here
Laura Holt replied to potatoradio's topic in Everything Else
Follow up to the retirement letter I wrote for a friend. He got an email this morning thanking him for the letter and asking "what is your retirement date". Information that was in the first line of a very terse letter. This is one of the reasons a lot of people hate having to deal with HR. -

I'm in Canada and most of the people I know work for hospitals or for some level of government. Sending the intent to retire letter is a way to let HR know you are leaving and they need to get their act together to get the ball rolling for your pension, and to replace you within the company. I don't think it's an actual requirement (but may be wrong) but I do know in most places I am familiar with they do expect at least 90 days notice that you are retiring.
