  1. Same here. I discovered The Rat Patrol while in grad school, decades after its original run. A colleague mentioned that Hans Gudegast had changed his name and had been on Y&R for years, so I started watching it for a while. Could not stick with it more than a year or so. I prefer Hauptmann Dietrich to Victor Newman.
  2. Uh... was it a crossover with the Discworld universe?
  3. Four men have been arrested in connection with the death of Michael K. Williams.
  4. Script supervisor Mamie Mitchell has filed a lawsuit against Alec Baldwin and the producers of Rust: Ms Mitchell's lawsuit claims that the script called for three tight camera shots - one of Mr Baldwin's eyes, another of a bloodstain on his shoulder and a third of his torso "as he reached his hand down to the holster and removed the gun". "There was nothing in the script about the gun being discharged by defendant Baldwin or by any other person," it says.
  5. Thank you for the fantastic, detailed, and carefully thought-out post! My sister was a prosecutor for 25+ years, and your observations about Sharon's wardrobe ring true to her experiences in a major metropolitan area District Attorney's office. I don't think she watches many procedurals, but the ridiculously short skirts, high heels, and tight everything on allegedly professional women would drive her as crazy as the completely unrealistic courtroom scenes. I somehow never got around to watching most of Major Crimes. You have inspired me to make the attempt.
  6. Now I really want to see an episode of something -- anything -- where the person objects and runs off with both the bride and the groom!
  7. Guilty verdicts for all charges in the first of the Varsity Blues trials. Sentencing is still to come, but I suspect that Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin & spouse are relieved to have dodged the bullet of a public trial.
  8. And now for something completely different: Shakira and her son had a run in with a couple of wild boars. In a park. In Barcelona. 🐗😳
  9. If I could "like" this a thousand times, I would!
  10. My brat, er, cat, likes crumpled balls of paper and wine corks. Thanks to the pandemic, he's got quite a few of the latter.
  11. There really needs to be a biopic, or better yet, a miniseries about the life of the incredible Betty Reid Soskin. She is the oldest active ranger in the National Park system (today is her 100th birthday!), and it is thanks to her that the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front historical park has become more accurate in portraying history of everyone, not just the white women symbolized by the Rosie the Riveter image.
  12. Happy 100th Birthday to Betty Reid Soskin! From the New York Times article: Betty Reid Soskin, who turns 100 on Sept. 22, is the oldest active ranger in the National Park Service. Over the past decade and a half, she has become both an icon of the service and an unlikely celebrity, drawing overflow crowds to talks and a steady stream of media interviewers eager for the eloquent words of an indomitable 5 feet 3 inch great-grandmother once described by a colleague as “sort of like Bette Davis, Angela Davis and Yoda all rolled into one.” https://mobile.twitter.com/danamo/status/1440741370654646272?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet
  13. Archbishop Carl Bean, LGBT activist and founder of a network of LGBT churches passed away on September 7th. He was 77. He recorded "I Was Born This Way" in 1977, but left his Motown career rather than sing "commercially viable" (i.e. heterosexual) love songs.
  14. The composer of Zorba the Greek, Mikis Theodorakis, has died. He was 96.
  15. The current conversation is making me nostalgic for TWOP. We had a forum dedicated to TV geography. Many laughs and much gnashing of teeth in there.
  16. Don Poynter, creator of the Little Black Box and many other oddities, died of cancer on August 13th. He was 96.
  17. Donald York, Musical Director of Paul Taylor Company, died on June 3rd, at the age of 73. I have had the pleasure of attending many performances of his work. He seemed to really understand composing for dancers, and his (slightly warped) sense of humor meshed perfectly with Paul Taylor's brilliant choreography.
  18. Mario Batali and his former business partner have reached a settlement in their sexual harassment case. They have to pay $600k to "at least 20" former employees. Not nearly enough.
  19. After 145 Years, Bayreuth Festival Has Its First Female Conductor. Oksana Lyniv, 43, will open the festival this Sunday. It took them long enough!
  20. Los Angeles authorities on Tuesday transported Harvey Weinstein to California to face charges of rape and sexual assault in the city where he made his name as a movie producer.
  21. Good question. I'm under the impression that "reality" tv is 99.99% fiction, so it makes sense to me to include them. (Full disclosure: I don't actually watch most of the shows people post about, I just enjoy reading what everyone has to say.)
  22. I'm not familiar with her other work, but I did see Kolja when it came out. I will have to see if I can find the Cinderella film, as well as the 1991 Czech version of The Beggar's Opera she was in.
  23. As many of you have spoken highly of A Black Lady Sketch Show, you might be interested in a free zoom event at Brooklyn College with one of the producers, Deniese Davis. Ms. Davis, a Brooklyn College alumna, will be talking about trying to increase representation in the industry. The event is on June 15th from 12:30 to 2. The link above has more details.
  24. I am NYC born and raised, but I was in graduate school at UCLA at the time, and it was scary as all get out. Not sure if I would want to watch a fictional version of the events.
