  1. From the linked article: "Eleanor Torrey West, who dedicated her life to preserving Ossabaw Island, a 26,000-acre inheritance off the coast of Georgia so large, lush and varied in terrain that visitors could walk among hardwood forests, palm tree stands and salt water marshes, died on Jan. 17 at her home in Savannah. She was 108." She lived on the island until she was 103. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/28/obituaries/eleanor-sandy-torrey-west-dead.html?action=click&block=more_in_recirc&impression_id=fcd40da1-61e6-11eb-9df8-f3eacc5d3a20&index=1&pgtype=Article&region=footer
  2. This is a quote from the New York Times' obituary for Ms. Tyson: “She’s our Meryl Streep,” Vanessa Williams told Essence in 2013. “She was the person you wanted to be like in terms of an actress, in terms of the roles she got and how serious she took her craft. She still is.” I get what Ms. Williams is trying to say, but honestly, it's backwards: if anything, Meryl Streep is a white Cecily Tyson (only not as good an actress, in my opinion). I'm probably nitpicking and/or not making any sense due to stress and insufficient sleep, but the comparison just doesn't sit well with me.
  3. More details on the death of Tony Hsieh back in November. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/26/technology/tony-hsieh-death.html?action=click&module=Latest&pgtype=Homepage
  4. I'm not really sure what TikTok is, but 16 is far too young to die, especially by suicide. RIP Siya Kakkar. https://nypost.com/2020/06/26/siya-kakkar-teen-tiktok-star-with-1-9-million-followers-dead-at-16/?utm_source=Outbrain&utm_medium=Discovery&utm_campaign=entertainment_content&utm_content=Siya+Kakkar%2C+teen+TikTok+star+with+2M+followers%2C+dead+at+16&utm_term=CNN+(Turner+U.S.)_CNN&dicbo=v1-57fa36700f129c30a4aa2ab9095cf1ce-00730586b2348a4d7fc0870204d9d20351-mrtdmn3egiydsljxgqzweljuge3gcljzgiytiljsge3dkzbzgaywgojrmy
  5. Jim Haynes died earlier this month. He was 87 and a fascinating character. I regret not having known about him and his open house Sunday dinners when I visited Paris years ago. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-55703174
  6. From the linked article: "Rémy Julienne was one of the world's best-known stuntmen, devising the crashes, crunches and collisions of more than 1,400 films. In many he himself appeared, anonymously of course. But over a 50-year career he was the body double who took the danger shots for a host of stars including Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Charles Bronson, Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo. In wig and appropriate clothing he also took on the form of Sophia Loren, Carole Bouquet and Gina Lollobrigida. He has died in France aged 90 of coronavirus." https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-55765555
  7. A touching article about how the surviving members of the 1960s era Green Bay Packers have been affected by the deaths of their teammates over the last few years. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/22/sports/football/green-bay-packers-1965.html?action=click&block=more_in_recirc&impression_id=f74c1500-5cd5-11eb-853d-25585acb7a76&index=0&pgtype=Article&region=footer
  8. From the linked article: "Gen. Nikolai T. Antoshkin, the commander of a perilous helicopter firefighting operation in which he and other pilots braved radiation exposure to contain the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, died on Sunday. He was 78." I'm old enough to remember the Chernobyl disaster, but I don't recall there being much coverage of the containment efforts. It's incredible that he lived as long as he did. Fuck Covid. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/17/world/europe/russia-antoshkin-chernobyl-obituary.html?action=click&block=associated_collection_recirc&impression_id=ae1fddb1-5903-11eb-aed4-9718c94c437d&index=1&pgtype=Article&region=footer
  9. I posted this in another thread, but since several of you have posted about him, I thought you might enjoy this interview: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/12/arts/dance/mads-mikkelsen-another-round.html?action=click&module=Features&pgtype=Homepage
  10. Ted Lumpkin, one of the oldest surviving Tuskegee Airmen, died last month from Covid. He was just shy of his 101st birthday. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/14/obituaries/ted-lumpkin-dead-coronavirus.html?action=click&module=News&pgtype=Homepage
  11. Nancye Radmin has died at the age of 82 I had not heard of her, nor could I have afforded to shop in her stores, but I owe her a huge debt. I remember the nasty looks and rude treatment I got when attempting to shop for clothes in the boutiques in Greenwich Village back in the 70s. It's thanks to Nancye Radmin that I was eventually able to buy clothes not made of nasty fabrics and designed by Omar the Tentmaker. Many thanks and RIP Ms. Radmin. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/25/fashion/nancye-radmin-dead.html?action=click&module=Latest&pgtype=Homepage
  12. Chad Stuart, half of the duo Chad and Jeremy, has died (it was not covid-19). He was 79. https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-55421963
  13. Can anyone translate that into English? I think it might mean that cars and/or trucks and/or horse-drawn buggies are being used to harass, or possibly threaten, people who are on the other side of a barrier, but it's really not clear.
  14. Thanks for the link. Quite the eye-opener (though, honestly, I knew almost nothing about him before his death brought him to my attention). The first paragraph of the article, however, makes me want to scream -- "have all went into overdrive"?!?! Does no one understand grammar anymore? Have all of the copy editors been fired? 🤬
  15. According to the New York Times, he was visiting his family in Connecticut and the fire occurred there, not in his trailer (unless he drove the trailer to Connecticut?). House or trailer, it's horrifying. More details are available from The Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/tony-hsieh-dead/2020/11/28/9669a22a-3197-11eb-bae0-50bb17126614_story.html😞 Mr. Hsieh was reported injured in a house fire on Nov. 18 while visiting family members in New London, Conn. New London Fire Chief Thomas Curcio told the Day newspaper in Connecticut that firefighters rescued a victim trapped in a waterfront house. The victim, not specifically identified as Mr. Hsieh, was flown by helicopter to the burn unit of a hospital in Bridgeport, Conn. (Sorry about the emoji -- it's supposed to be a normal parenthesis with a normal colon!)
  16. I was going to post the BBC obituary, but didn't want to come off as a ghoul, with two posts back-to-back. https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-26924906
  17. From the linked article: An unnamed man competing on the TBS game show Wipeout died in the hospital following his participation in an obstacle course. https://www.eonline.com/amp/news/1211203/wipeout-contestant-is-dead-after-completing-obstacle-course I don't get the appeal of shows like that. Then again, I never got the appeal of gladiatorial matches, either. Good thing I don't live in ancient Rome.
  18. I hope that it is not as serious as it sounds, and that Snip feels better soon! Best wishes and sympathy to you both from me, Artemus Squeakifur, and Amelia Fledermaus Snotnose (my two 12 year old cats).
  19. Broadway has lost another one to covid-19: Lynn Kellogg, who was in the original cast of Hair. She was 77. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2020/11/14/world/covid19-coronavirus-updates/lynn-kellogg-who-found-the-spotlight-in-hair-dies-at-77
  20. Hall of Fame pitcher Whitey Ford, 91, has died. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/09/sports/baseball/whitey-ford-dead.html?action=click&module=Top Stories&pgtype=Homepage
  21. Thanks! I was going to credit you as the poster, but my phone gets cranky when I switch screens while replying here (it's probably my fault, not the phone's).
  22. Jimmy Cliff is still with us, thank goodness. It was Johnny Nash who died. The video of Jimmy Cliff was posted because Nash wrote the song. https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-54444297
  23. Poet Derek Mahon, 78, has died after a short, unspecified, illness. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-54385928 I found this by accident, whilst looking for more information on the hospitalization of Norway's king Harald (I blame the Royals thread here for getting me into modern royals). I wasn't familiar with his work before, but look forward to reading his poetry.
  24. As far as I know, more doesn't work the way less and fewer do. More (less) sugar, more (fewer) bricks. The rebuttal tweet is creating a false parallel.
  25. Robert Gore, 83, inventor of Gore-Tex waterproof fabric has died after a long illness (unspecified in this article). Perhaps not a celebrity in the usual sense of the word, but his invention certainly made many lives better. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-54224405
