  1. Faith Ringgold, quilt artist and children's book author, has died at the age of 93. From the article: "For more than a half-century, Ms. Ringgold explored themes of race, gender, class, family and community through a vast array of media, among them painting, sculpture, mask- and doll-making, textiles and performance art. She was also a longtime advocate of bringing the work of Black people and women into the collections of major American museums."
  2. Bizarre story of the day: North Korea censors Alan Titchmarsh's trousers. I am not familiar with Garden Secrets, but used to enjoy watching his show Ground Force, despite having no gardening skills whatsoever.
  3. Thank you! Dunno why it didn't occur to me to Google the author. Duh.
  4. Definitely American, not British. The author is Donald Bogle.
  5. Maybe you brilliant and observant folks can help identify something which is driving me crazy. I am listening to an audio book narrated by the author. He has a weirdly stilted but enthusiastic style of narration, not quite maddening enough to make me give up on it. Yet. My biggest issue is that he pronounces daughter as dorter. He also says warters for waters. Whence comes this pronunciation? Is it a regional dialect? Thanks for your assistance!
  6. Morning Edition host Bob Edwards has died. He was 76.
  7. Peter Schickele, creator of P.D.Q. Bach, has died. I had the distinct pleasure of attending a number of live P.D.Q. Bach performances at Carnegie Hall in the last millennium. I also conducted my high school Renaissance Choir in performances of some of his madrigals ("My Bonny Lass She Smelleth") and rounds ("The Art of the Ground Round" Schickele Number 119/pound). He was truly brilliant.
  8. Looks like being an overt racist and misogynistic pig has consequences. Jann Wenner has been removed from the board of directors of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation according to the linked NY Times article.
  9. Ragtime revival pianist Max Morath has died. I feel the need find my LPs... and finally hook up the record player I bought in an auction ages ago.
  10. I've been watching a bunch of Letters Live videos on YouTube. This one made me cry ugly, but also laugh in recognition. Sue Perkins reads a letter to Pickles, her dog.
  11. Thanks for sharing that, elleryanne. What a great voice, gone far too soon. And that's either a tiny piano, or Mr. Lee was very, very tall.
  12. Television is not the only medium for actors. He was the lead in the Donmar Warehouse production of Henry V. I'm looking forward to seeing it on Sunday (sadly it's only a National Theatre Live at my local cinema, not in person).
  13. You sent me down a Google rabbit hole (my fault, of course!). I found quite a few memes/images with variations of the wording. According to this article, it's not really by Winston Churchill. Not that surprising, but now I am worried that some of my favorite Churchill quotes are also misattributed. Oh well, it's still a great quote.
  14. Not exactly news, but an inspiring article from the BBC about Nilambur Ayisha, an Indian actor who persevered despite religious hate -- including being shot at during a performance!
  15. As far as I can tell, they are simply using a novel method to shed on less accessible parts of the hanging clothes.
  16. New Yorker writer Roger Angell has died at the ripe old age of 101. Helluva run.
  17. Rosmarie Trapp, 93, the last surviving daughter of Baron Georg Johannes von Trapp has died.
  18. Singer/songwriter Judy Henske has died. From the linked article: "Judy Henske, who made a splash on the folk scene of the early 1960s with a versatile voice that could conjure Billie Holiday or foreshadow Janis Joplin, and performances full of offbeat stage patter, died on April 27 in hospice care in Los Angeles. She was 85."
  19. It's good to hear (read?) that they are doing well. I didn't watch Boy Meets World but I thoroughly enjoyed seeing them together and separately over the decades. I particularly liked them in St. Elsewhere and thinking about Mr. Daniels' John Adams in 1776 always makes me smile.
  20. Reading your post right after spending time in the Royals thread... I did a double take. Have you tried Petromalt? I've given it to my cats for hairballs, but it is also a laxative.
  21. I never watched Modern Family, so I know absolutely nothing about Sarah Hyland. I usually avoid clickbait, but this article about her filming while awaiting a kidney transplant is interesting and rather distressing. Poor kid (I am more than old enough to consider her a kid).
