You also don't win the girl by going up to her after a date, where she just kissed the guy and obviously had a good time, and proposing to her.

Maybe it's just me, but Amy hardly ever looks very happy these days.  I think part of it is her missing Sheldon and another part is how insensitive the gang seems to be to her feelings sometimes (see the Tinder episode and the role-playing game from a couple of seasons back).  If you look closely at the kissing scene last night, there was no sign of joy on Amy's part.  It seemed rather perfunctory.

What's the deal with the boss's red eyes? At first I thought Martian Manhunter or something.

My guess is there's a 99.99% chance you're correct based on one key piece of dialogue that went unexplored (pure speculation here, not a spoiler).  But if it is him, that would be really, really cool.  And opens the door to some potentially great storylines going forward.

Loving the show so far, but a few minor things still bug.  Like Winn's constant references to Kara's costume not being bulletproof.  I'd love for the writers of this show to read some of John Byrne's Superman stuff from the comics and transfer a bit of that mythos here.  In Byrne's Supes universe, anything Clark wore that was within a quarter inch or so of his skin was indesctructible because of a bio-electric aura that his body generated.  Using that same logic, Kara shouldn't have smelled like gasoline after saving that ship since that same nuance of her power would have protected her from that.

Since the show is so big on exposition - and there are likely so many new viewers not familiar with the Superman canon, a little explanation of how Kryptonian powers work in this universe might be nice.  Ok, we get that whole "I've got the same powers as my cousin" thing, but what does that mean exactly?  Do you both have micro-scopic vision?  Infra-red vision?  In this new universe, the writers have a really nice opportunity to re-define things just like Byrne did 30 years ago.  His Supes had some really cool little quirks, like being able to sense when he's been photographed.

Overall, inperfect as it is, two episodes in Supergirl has all the makings of a promising show and I'm looking forward to the ride.

Tripe, Southern Italian-style meaning made with tomato sauce, was one of my father's favorites.  (I'm rolling my eyes as I type that.)  Even more than the taste, it was the texture that got to me.

One of the coolest things about Italian-style cooking is that Tomato Sauce is considered Gravy.  Can't stand the Thanksgiving type Gravy, lol.

  4. If only Joss Whedon had been associated with the project!  I really liked the pilot, and I've been a Supergirl fan since the 60s

Loved the pilot and thought Melissa brought the right combination of cute, spunk and grit to the character.

I'm actually relieved Whedon doesn't have anything to do with this project.  While I loved Buffy, Joss quickly became TV's and movie's version of Chris Claremont.  You know exactly what their characters are going to say and do and it takes all the joy out of what you're watching or reading.  Whedon, to my surprise, has managed to tone his act down for the Avengers, but a lot of his tropes are still there (e.g., quippy, wise-cracking, brave young heroine) so I can enjoy that franchise at least.

Daredevil is it's own thing, not just cause it's Marvel but because it's street level gritty (vs. Arrow, which is street level silly).

Never understood the Daredevil hate.  My best guess is it suffered from early Affleck revulsion, lol.  As superhero adaptations go, it's actually one of the most accurate and well-done.  As for Hasselhoff's Nick Fury, Stan Lee thought the Hoff nailed the part.  Even at this point I'd rather see him in the Marvel movies than the ubiquitious Samuel L. Jackson.

  5. The writers seem to be getting their groove back.  I liked Sheldon and Leonard on their "A" plot mini adventure, and the rest of the gang (minus Emily) in the "B" plot.  Also loved the subtle way everyone finds out (including us) that Amy had started dating.  With her inexperience it really was the smart thing for her to do, althogh she didn't seem very happy about it.  And Yay to less creepy Stuart this week (I really think someone in Lorre's camp is reading these boards).  Big surprise: although Michael Rapaport usually really, really bugs me (going all the way back to Boston Public), I wouldn't mind seeing him as a semi-regular.  Great chem with Leonard and Sheldon and it would be interesting to see how he would fit in with the rest of the crew.

  6. "Panty Pinata" is one of my favorites for so many elements: "Oh no, not junior rodeo..." "This will shorten the war by five years and save millions of lives." "With great power comes great responsibility."

"The Cooper-Nowitzki Theorem," where Sheldon realizes he's in a "relationship" with Ramona. Again, for some of the great lines:

    Leonard: We're going...

    Howard: To watch, right?

Those two episodes were on in syndication last night, back to back.  They both reminded me of why I fell in love with this show.  As much as some of us have ragged on this show for the past two seasons, BBT, when its on its game, is as good as any sitcom in history.  Great insights here on Penny and Sheldon.  After reading many of the comments here, it strikes me that they are both very entitled in their own ways.  The difference is Penny's entitlement is very subtle and Shelly's is (of course) OTT.  Could be each subconsciously recognizes that trait in the other, and this leads to the characters' chem.  As a big Sara Rue fan, the Dr. Stephanie antipathy stings, but I get it.  Not a particularly endearing character.  I too was always rather meh on Pyria.  Probably the most manipulative of Lenoard's GFs.

Just seeing this now.  Beef tripe is my CTFE also!  My parents forced me to eat a number of things I didn't like but tripe was the only thing that caused me to vomit all over the kitchen table.  Served 'em right!

Yikes!  My reaction wasn't nearly as bad, heh.  Just remember that strong, weird, vinegar-like taste.  Maybe we should start a survivor's club.  Btw, were your folks from the South like mine?  Lotta strange stuff was eaten below the Mason-Dixon Line.

And my grandma had a bowl of Cream of Wheat EVERY single morning.  For real.

For my family it was Maypo.  Still can't stand the damn stuff.

Mrs QT made a point after this show, though, and I'm starting to agree with her.  She said "I want them to sell me the story, I don't really want to watch them be actors."  Yeah.  Me, too.

While I appreciate the show's moxie for trying to pull off an entire season of live shows, the reality is that virtually no sitcom cast has the chops to pull that off today.  The only modern-day sitcom to try this and do well was Roc, and that was basically because most of the primary cast had theater roots.  Will and Grace tried it twice, I think, with horrendous results.  Hot in Cleveland tried for one show last season, and it seemed like half that episode was devoted to Valerie Bertinelli either flubbing her lines or breaking up in the background.  I myself would have loved to see Frasier do a season of live shows.  That would have been fun.

Did I see Laura Spencer's name in the opening credits, right after Kevin Sussman, or did my eyes deceive me?

Just read an article on Yahoo that said she's been upgraded to a series regular.

I was hoping Emily was gone for good. She's just a weird character that doesn't fit the show IMO. I wish they'd gone with the vet for a steady girlfriend.

Me too.  Laura appears to be a fine actress, but there's no real chemistry between her character, Raj, or the rest of the cast.  For the short time we saw Yvette the Vet interact with Lenny, Penny and Raj (hmm, now that sounds like a musical group), there seemed to be a bit of a spark there.

But Mayim Bialick plays things so straight. She seems so focused on making the moments real.

Mayim is this show's un-sung MVP.  Just her facial expressions and reaction shots alone are gold.  Every year I hope she gets a well-deserved Emmy and get disappointed every damn time.

If anyone's interested I posted some breaking news on Kaley's divorce over on the Penny thread.

And, none of Leonard's insecurities about his relationship with Penny are actually his fault, as they are the result of his mother having rejected him growing up.

Spot on Bazinga.  I was just about to post that much of the four male leads' dysfunction could, theoretically, be traced back to their Mother issues (maybe its just the Freudian in me).  Leonard could never get Mommy's approval, so he sleeps with any female (or tries to) that looks his way.  Raj's mother was so overbearing he couldn't even speak to women for much of his adult life.  Howard's mother infantilized him to such a degree that his only realistic marriage prospect was to a woman that subtly does the same exact thing (and Bernadette has actually been known to sound like Mrs. Wolowitz).  Still trying to figure out the deal between Sheldon and his mom.  Maybe she showed him too much affection and caused that part of his psyche to shut down?

But it's strange that Sheldon keeps using sexual references in regards to all this apparent wonderfulness that Amy's missing.

Yeah, what the Hell was that about?  Sheldon made more sexual references in this one episode than he has in the past eight years.  Was the inference to Amy that he'll actually, ah, touch her if she comes back to him?

It was time that Leonard and Penny talked about their insecurities regarding each other.

Except that it's beyond tired and gets more illogical with each passing season.  Both have gone through tons of relationships over the years (Leonard more than Penny now that I think of it).  They've both sampled what's out there and decided they were each other's best match.  Not sure where all the uncertainty is coming from.

Re: Raj - I get the feeling he and Emily are done, but the writers just haven't gotten around to telling us yet.  I'm still holding out hope that we get to see the Vet again.  She and Raj had a nice, easy chemistry and it's strange that the show chose not to pursue it.  Plus, she was cute and seemed pretty normal.  Not everyone in the cast has to be an oddball.  The best sitcoms always had at least one "straight" man (or woman) to amp up the comedic effect.  Maybe that's why Emily and Lucy haven't worked out; the audience is overdosing on "characters."

As a professor with a roommate and no dependents for over 8 years, Leonard should easily be able to afford a couple of counseling sessions.

Maybe he's cheap on top of all his other issues?

Took me awhile to process this episode.  A few more laughs this time around, so that's a step in the right direction.  Glad the Leonard-Penny drama wasn't dragged out.  Almost as if the writers sensed fans would be turned-off it it had gone on too long.  Seems like the new game is to find out how big an arse hole Sheldon will become before someone (hopefully Amy or Penny) takes him down.

From the promos next week's show might just approach the old levels of funny.  Here's hoping.

Tired of the how could such a hot blonde fall for a geek like Leonard routine. First of all, Kaley is not that hot anymore, and second, Leonard is becoming a bore.

This to the hundredth power squared.  The writers have driven this bit so deep into the ground that it came up in China and went back down again.  For a self-proclaimed "loser" with women, Leonard has been with all types of women since the show began.  He should be way over Penny's cute-ness factor by now.  Actually, for so-called geeks, all the males on this show (even Sheldon) have had multiple women chasing after them over the years.  Stuart even got to date and make out with Penny.  Some of us "non-geeky" guys should be so lucky.  How can you complain when you get to make out with women that look like Sara Rue and Danica McKellar???  Yeesh.

Not sure why Penny is expected or required to be the same person she was at age 22. She's nearly a decade older. They've all evolved. Sheldon fights it, but he's growing and changing nonetheless.

No, she shouldn't be the same person, but she should at least be happy.  By her own admission, nine years ago she met four guys (and later their SOs) and became immersed in their lives.  And they in hers.  But despite occasional allusions to the contrary, she doesn't always seem happier for it.  She even said that to Amy.  Sheldon's evolution, on the other hand, has taken him from an unbearable, pedantic, self-obsessed guy who most people would want nothing to do with, to someone who's only slightly less insufferable.  His empathy for others may have increased a wee bit (and even that's debatable given last night) so at least there's that.  But as they say, mileage varies.  Out of the original core five, it looks to me like only Howard (and to a lesser extent Raj) have evidenced consistent, positive character growth.

  15. Love how such a mediocre episode has brought out such insightful posts!  I agree with much of what's been said here.  The show (and most of its characters) seem to have a "tired-ness" that wasn't even present in the last, abysmal seasons of Friends and HIMYM.  Other than Howard and Bernadette, everyone seems miderable, or at the very least unhappy.

I don't think the show needs an infusion of new characters so much as as letting some previously seen or referenced characters get some exposure.  Leonard now has a new brother-in-law that may still be a meth-head.  Let's meet him and see what happens.  Sheldon has a brother (and I think another sister) we haven't seen yet, plus a young niece(?).  Leonard has siblings we know almost nothing about.  Time for the writers to show a little interest and start playing with all the un-opened toys those characters represent.

Saw the pilot in syndication a couple of weeks ago.  As dungeonwriter said in an awesome post, there's virtually no trace of the sweet, bubbly girl we first met nine years ago.  It's almost like hanging with this crew has made her cynical and world-weary.

Oh, special note to HelenBaby - would love to know your secret of finding joy after age 50.  Some of us "of a certain age" are still searching, lol.

If you're talking interchangeable, Sonny's run of tiny brunette girlfriends is the real example.

Funniest GH line in recent years was when Olivia referred to herself as a "Brenda-Bot," i.e., a big-boobed brunette who will do anything for the dimpled Don.

I really thought Sutton Foster looked her real age this episode, and no way she would be able to pass for 26.  I guess it was the breakup and all that.

Totally agree.  The whole premise requires a suspension of belief and that's okay.  As another poster stated Sutton moves, speaks and has the presence of a 40 year-old woman.  If you saw Liza and Kelsey in a restaurant together and didn't know them, most people would think it was a mother- daughter outing.
