Props to people who correctly guessed that "Henshaw" was really Martian Manhunter rather than Hank Henshaw. I wonder if OG Henshaw is still out there.

Yeah, I was one of the folks that called it very early on, it was so obvious to us comic book lovers.  Still, I wish that they had gotten Phil Morris for the part.  I loved his take on J'onn Jonzz from Smallville.  If you're going to be that obvious, go all the way.  Plus, just like some comic book characters, Phil never seems to truly age.

I guess that was meant to explain just why Cat is the way she is, but she was so over the top awful, right down to telling her daughter that she didn't have the ability to chat with Toni Morrison and Margaret Atwood, that I couldn't take her seriously.

Toni Morrison is a distant cousin (4th or 5th I think) of mine, so that reference was really cool, even though I missed it.  I'm trying to pull for this show, but it's rapidly losing its luster for me.  Other than the Kryptonians, every VOW has been lame, lame, lame.  Kudos to the poster who referred to RT as a "busted Vision knockoff."  Kara's fight scenes are consistently weak, and James Olsen's only purpose seems to be eye candy.  Right now I'm basically hanging in there for Henshaw's big reveal, but even that will be anti-climatic given how heavy the anvils have been.  Still, it's only Season 1, shows often take a while to find their groove.  I still remember how awful the first season-and-a-half of ST:NG was before the cast pulled a mini-revolt over the script quality.

A lot of people don't really believe in reverse racism.  It's not just me who feels this way.  The harm of calling a white guy Skip is not equal to the harm of assuming a black guy's name is Jamal.

Seriously, I really kind of wish shows would stop beating this damn drum.  As a Black man trying to survive in this country, I take the capitalist perspective: racism only matters if you control the means and modes of production.  Rooms full of White Lawyers and Programmers making $200K each are in a position to be racist because they are people of means.  Monica? On the outside looking in?  Controls very little and her racist attitude becomes irrelevant, IMO.  Heard a great joke the other day, not sure if it represents a true stat: 98% of the Billionaires in America are White - the other 2% are Oprah.

  4. One of the best things about THE GOOD WIFE has usually been the way it highlights the conflicts raised by new technology.

Gotta admit, as a life-long techie, I got chills when Cary trotted out the 50 TB external hard drive.  That move was straight up gansta on the part of Florrick, Quinn and Canning.  Too bad all it accomplished was to piss off Judge "Uncle Junior," lol.

I can't believe they want to waste our time again on Alicia possibly running for office again. That storyline sucked the first time around. And it seems they forgot she had to immediately resign in shame.

TGW has probably one more season left.  Seems there are an equal number of good storylines mixed in with the "lather-rinse-repeat" stuff.  The writers seem to be starved for fresh ideas other than the latest tech-driven COW.

  5. We all predicted Cary would end up dating Lucca, right?

Maybe.  But we also predicted the black associate they passed over would go to Alicia to sue Lockhart Agos.

Nothing against Kush Jumbo, who appears to be a competent actress, but Lucca Quinn has no presence whatsoever, sexual or otherwise.  Can't imagine Cary would be interested in someone so bland.  Monica does have a certain amount of hotness going on, however.

  6. Watched "the Launch Acceleration" in syndication tonight.  It occurred to me that wardrobe does an incredible job in "frumping up" Mayim.  That cosplay scene at the end, where Amy is dressed in a TOS Star Trek uniform?  Amy is straight up hot, easily in a league with either Penny or Bernadette.  Or maybe its just the geek in me, not sure.

Wow, the writers are throwing Mayim at that Emmy as hard as they can, aren't they? She's putting her all into it too. Man I've been rooting for her to win for years (and not for a small part to see #Blossomwinsanemmy trend), and I think the writers are starting to really back her up now that Jim Parsons isn't a sure win anymore.

So nice to see I'm not alone in this sentiment.  Don't want to jinx it, but I feel like next year might be the one for Mayim.  She really deserves it.  Jim Parsons has so much hardware now even he's probably tired of awards at this point.  Nice episode in a solid season so far.  I've regained my love for this show.  I too felt sad for Amy.  And yet I kind of hope the writers go the bolder route and have each of them wind up with some else (even though that will make the cast even more bloated).  Now a series regular, Emily is still doing absolutely nothing for me.  I'll always wonder why they didn't stick with Yvette the Vet.  She had more chem with Raj in a 5 minute scene than he and Emily have shown in more than a season.

Pleading white girl ignorance about black barbershop goings-on: how long does it generally take to get a cut Dre and Junior were getting? Is it a five-minute thing, 15, or half-hour?

Most men will be at the door when the shop opens. Depending on the shop that is around 5 or 6 (am) on weekends.

Yeah, appointment haircuts are an abstract theoretical concept in the hood.  It's more likely you'll get a barber to come to your house for a cut.  I myself  have always been a "7:00 am-as-soon-as-the-head-barber-opens-the-shop on Saturday morning" kind of guy.  A cut usually takes about 20-25 minutes for me.  Been getting the same cut since I was 10 years old: Dark Ceasar, round in the front, square in the back.  Have an older barber who does my hairline the old-fashioned way: with hot lather, a straight razor, and warm towel.  You ain't getting that at Supercuts.  Well, maybe the warm towel, heh.

Barbershops were always the male social center of Black neighborhoods in the 60s, 70s and 80s.  As a kid, I remember the local barbershop always had centerfolds of the latest Muhammad Ali fight (from the New York Daily News) posted on the wall.  Good times.

I could really really do without the impending love triangle though. I like Jimmy (and boy is he pretty) but the romance angle is the weakest part of this show.

Not even five episodes in and I'm already weary of it.  The whole romance thing just seems so forced.  And locking Winn firmly in the friend zone so quickly removes any possibility of a true romantic triangle.  Although it would be nice if the writers fake us out and give us a romantic endgame other than Kara/James.

  10. There was also a Brothers and Sisters reference to going to Ojai.

Caught that one too.  Berlanti is certainly having fun with the callbacks, isn't he?

I don't see how the fight with Live Wire establishes that Supergirl is weaker than Superman.

My point - and I didn't make it was well as I should have - was that in every single episode thus far we've seen Kara brought to the brink of death by "B" list opponents.  We ain't talking Darkskeid or Doomsday here folks.   If the writers keep this trope up, SG will quickly lose all credibility, IMO.

  11. The villain of the week was a fizzle but I wonder if that's because as a character, she was just so unlikable.

The VOWs are getting lamer with each episode.  Livewire is basically the female version of Electro.  Yet the far less powerful Spider-Man takes out Electro with moderate effort and Livewire almost kills Kara.  Pretty certain now we can declare Supergirl isn't as powerful as her fabled Cousin.  The next interesting villain this show serves up will be the first.  Still sticking with SG based on its sheer potential.

    "CatCopter" is even worse.

True dat.  A few pretty clever in-jokes get squeezed in here and there.  LW's "here kitty, kitty" was clearly a meta comment related to Kitty Walker McCallister, Calista's character from Berlanti's Brothers and Sisters (a show that should still be on the air IMO).

  12. You know the sex season wasn't that good when I spent the whole thing thinking that Alicia's bra was really flattering, and about how they had to block that scene so it doesn't look weird that Alicia is naked and Peter's practically in a winter coat.

Why do the writers persist in portraying J Margolies as the alluring, must desired, and hornier than a toad attorney????????

This may sound mean/shallow: but Juliana, while still rather appealing, is at a point where she now looks better with her clothes on than off.

He seems to be attempting to do an imitation of Sam Elliott and - seriously - that can't be done.

Man, that is so spot on.  I totally see it now: the low, growly voice, head tilt, bemused expressions, snipped comments - he is so apeing Sam Elliott.  And it isn't working.

Well that or Farkle marrying both of them as ruler of the world.

I'd love to see that, heh.  It's clear he loves them both, but for different reasons.  Combine the two and they probably make the perfect wife.

ETA: Read the article linked above.  Rowan is an incredibly intelligent, articulate young woman.  Like Jodie Foster smart.  Really impressive.

Kaley seems... disinterested to me lately. Not sure if it her's personal life cropping up, or she's just bored with her role, but lately for me a lot of the stuff she's doing she really comes across as phoning it in. *shrugs*

Funny, the natural, easy chemistry she and Johnny had during the breakfast scene had me wondering if they're dating again IRL (depite their mutual statements to the contrary).  They seem like the most natural couple on the show, really comfortable with each other.  Maybe I'm an old, sentimental softie but I'd like to believe these two are endgame both on and off screen.

edited because these old eyes don't catch typos like they used to.

  15. Both young actresses are great IMO.  I can see Rowan maturing into a Zooey Deschanel-plus actress.  There might be some Anne Hathaway upside there.  As a sporadic watcher, I really wish the writers weren't so wedded to the Riley/Maya = Cory/Shawn trope.  In later seasons of BMW, Shawn's daddy issues weighed the show down and I can see that quickly happening here.  Better to explore other dimensions of Maya's character.

  16.

Amy's date reminded me way too much of Ricky Gervais. Glad that didn't last.

I'd never seen Stephen Merchant before, but he reminded me of a young Tim Curry.

Finally, an episode I liked.  Mayim Bialik was great!

I've actually liked every episode this season.  It's like the writers sat down and watched the best of past shows to mine what really makes BBT tick.  Mayim never disappoints.  Who knew she would "blossom" into such an acting talent?

Oh okay. Identity Crisis sounds like a much more entertaining plot judging solely by the wikipedia entry on it. Those superheroes are awfully quick to violate people memories to get their own way.

The interpersonal dynamics alone would make a great movie.  In particular, I found it interesting how Superman kept his distance from everything until it was inevitable that he would have to become involved.  Makes it easy to see how Ka-El could go years without seeing Cousin Kara.  To your comment, I found it very insightful that once Zatanna (who I wouldn't mind showing up in Supergirl) decides she'll no longer perform the wind-wipes, the other JLA members automatically assume that Martian Manhunter will.  If Supergirl lasts as long as Smallville, we need to see Kara faced with those kinds of ethical decisions.  In ten seasons of Smallville, Clark never faced those kinds of life-altering dilemnas, which is rather unrealitic given his powers and the bad guys he faced who were often out to kill his loved ones.  That's why Kara needs to hold the line at four as far as non-family who knows who she really is.

  18.

Do you mean Infinite Crisis ? If so, I can't say I've read any DC Comics.

Actually I meant Identity Crisis, by Brad Meltzer and Rags Morales.  Its an interesting study in the depths to which super heores have to go to in order to protect their loved ones. Which is partly why Alex's advice of "stop telling everyone who you are," rang so true, and Kara seemed to blow her off.  Probably part of her learning curve.  On that note, if I were Supes, I'd be toooo pissed that my "Pal" James let my secret identity slip so thoughtlessly.

  19.

This is often the problem of this disney type superheroics, the heroes are never really in danger of experiencing any real consequences for interacting with psychotic people with super powers.

Thanks for clarifying Wayne 67.  Did you happen to read Infinity Crisis, and if so, what are your thoughts?  As we get more super-hero shows, it would be interesting if one dealt with the more psychotic aspects of super-villians and the moral dilmena they often put the characters through.  When Norman Osbourne finally went over the brink in the Avengers and started wrecking major chaos, I remember one character (Hawkeye maybe?) telling Spider-Man, "this is basically your fault because you had countless opportunities to kill this guy and you didn't."  Given how "disneyfied" SG is Kara will likely never face to challenge of having to kill a bad guy, but it would be interesting to see a SH show put that issue on the table.

  20.

The latter is most common, and Kara's relative size should imply that she can store less energy than her cousin.

Yeah, that's my thinking as well, but the writers stating that might fly in the face of this show's feminist trope.

Any relationship Kara has on this show is going to be inter-racial. She's of a Kryptonian race, passing for one of Earth's races, so it's unavoidable.

Interesting take.  Would that be inter-racial or intra-species?  We've seen numerous Black Kryptonians over the years.

  21.

I think they meant Reactron could have killed her while she was out

Possibly.  Wayne 67's comment was open-ended and it read a certain way to me.  There were a lot of different things that could have happened to Kara while she was out cold, and I think that was the commenter's primary point.

She doesn't possess Superman's level of experience or the same amount of strength

We know that for sure about experience, but the strenght level differential hasn't been determined as far as I can tell.  As far as Supes is concerned, sometimes it appears he's as strong as the writers need him to be in a particular situation.  Only Byrne went out of his way to clearly define Kal's strength level and various other abilities.

  22.

She was unconscious for HOURS afterwards. Reactron could have done anything with her limp unconscious body during that time.

Guess I'm already too into this show and Kara/Melissa as this thought made me very uncomfortable.  Throughout main stream comics only DC (JLA-Identity Crisis) and Marvel (either FF or the Avengers, I forget which) have touched upon the issues of rape and sexual abuse.  And, IIRC, non-meta human females were the victims (that was certainly the case with Sue Dignby in Identity Crisis).  Girl power trope aside, I think SG is too much of a "feel good" show to go down that dark path.

  23. Kromm, on 10 Nov 2015 - 4:31 PM, said:

Do the pundits think perhaps that middle America tuned out this episode because they anticipated the big black guy putting the moves on the little (if super-strong and alien) white girl and didn't want to see "that"?

    Ugh if true.

I wish people wouldn't always shove that sentiment off on middle America, like it's the only place on earth with racists.  And I doubt that they'd write her having a crush on him if they were all nervous about how people would react - they'd just cast someone white instead.

It's 2015 and there are so many inter-racial relationships on TV that you'd think this would no longer be an issue.  Although for some odd reason the second I heard Jimmy Olsen was going to be African American I thought it was for the sole purpose of him having an IR relationship with the title character.

  24.

Henshaw's attitude toward Kara and how he treats her is getting on my every last nerve.

    When he's revealed to be

    The Martian Manhunter

as I'm sure he will be based on last night's anvil/teaser, I think you'll feel a lot better.  As for other Batgirl and other DC heroes showing up, I'll pass.  Having Aquaman, Kid Flash, Cyborg, et al, all show up during Smallville's final seasons was kinda like jumping the shark to me.  Although Wonder Woman showing up would be consistent with the "girl power" thing.  As a meta-human almost as powerful as Superman, Diana would be the perfect mentor for Kara.  I believe DC went in that direction during the Silver (?) Age comics.

ETA: Include me in the group that thinks Melissa is cute as a button.  That little head tilt she did when Alex was teasing her in the coffee shop was truly adorable.

  25.

The trope now is swiping access to webcams.  In theory they can be infected with malware that allows them to be turned on and off remotely, the data streamed to whoever, and even the little light can be turned off (although for dramatic reasons on a TV show they might show the light going on to illustrate the person is being spied on).

Thanks for that.  Love the Mr. T avatar by the way. :o)  You just reminded me, I just purchased an all-in-one pc with the webcam built in.  Really need to put some black tape across the camera lens.
