BM looks like he want someone to kill him.

After his time at Y&R, I have to wonder if Billy was looking forward to GH as a fresh start with an interesting character and is pissed off at how things turned out.  If he, Kelly, and Steve are all ticked off because no one is getting what they want, it's actually kind of ironic - neither are the viewers.  If anyone ever asked me to name one single thing that is wrong with GH the answer would be simple: for the last 15 years or show this soap has been all about what the show runners (and sometimes actors) want and the fans are just a necessary evil.

Curious to see how the crossover will work (although no Legends already makes me sad.)

Same here.  It was great that previous crossovers ended with Legends because that show's writers always brought their "A" Game to the table.

Is there a particular reason that J'onn and Alex have been used so little this season?

Actually it does seem like J'onn is being used more, but is just as ineffective as ever.  Not only was he unable to shut Manchester down telepathically, J'onn couldn't even figure out where he was.  Speaking of Manchester and his gadgets...where does he get all those wonderful toys?

And, again, how can no one tell that Kara is Supergirl?! They are literally exactly alike, other than Kara having glasses and a ponytail!

And the two sound alike as well.  Funny aside - a set of identical twins work at a store I've frequented for years.  One wears glasses and the other doesn't - that's the only thing that keeps me from confusing their names.

Anyone at Catco would be at risk. Villains would attack her there constantly. She'd need to stop working there. I also don't think that James is impervious to alien attack. Didn't he almost get killed by a bullet last week? He's like a somewhat better equipped police officer.

And there's also Lena to consider.  Lena herself was recently attacked in her own office because Mercy Graves was able to hack Lena's security system long enough to gain access (since Mercy herself had designed the system).  So Lena would also be at risk if Supergirl's secret identity became public knowledge, since even without the anti-alien movement, there would still be scores of criminals who would be out to get revenge on Supergirl through any and all of her loved ones.

There's something to be said for those points, but Lena's and Catco's offices seem to be attacked pretty regularly as it is.  I guess SG's coming out as Kara Danvers would only increase the frequency.

Kara flying and bringing the building with her was a creative use of her powers that I don't recall seeing before in any Superman shows/movies, so points for presumed originality.

Actually that looks to me like a shout-out to John Byrne, who re-created the Superman mythos in the late 80s.  IIRC, it always bothered Byrne how some super-heroes could fly without any type of explanation.  So with the X-men, he established that Rogue flew by generating a force greater than gravity.  When he took over Superman, Byrne stated that Kal-El flew by "sheer force of will," which is what Kara appeared to be doing tonight.  It really was a cool use of her powers!

Too bad Manchester was made to look more of the bad guy than Agent of Liberty

Manchester Black is the most interesting character in this Universe.  He's kind of like Batman - always prepared for any contingency, even stopped Kara dead in her tracks.  Dude needs his own show, for real.

So...is it bad that I was rooting for the President wanting to know Supergirl's other identity? I mean, they could easily find that information out if they really searched for it, but I think the President made a good point about his family needing protection because his identity is now extremely important so why shouldn't Supergirl extend the same risk? Although I guess it's more risky for her as people are more anti-alien this season.

Did anyone else think that Kara had flown into the DEO just to reveal her secret ID in light of Ben's comments?  The whole "I can put my loved ones at risk" trope doesn't work here.  Other than her adopted Mom, those closest to Kara (James, Alex, J'onn and Brainy) can all pretty much fend for themselves.

It’s almost liked the creators thought it was a cool visual for episode 1 of him walking off the edge of his building and every promo we saw for two months was that but then, meh, what they really wanted was some Thirtysomething drama with a bunch of ridiculous storylines played by attractive people so maybe the viewers won’t notice. Ugh.

This show really does have a Thirtysomething (ABC melodrama from the 90s) feel to it, doesn't it?  That had been bugging me for the longest time, what does this show remind me of?  That's it, pretty folks in their 30s with unrealistic problems, all set to the backdrop of pop music.  Except this show isn't as good as Thirtysomething.  Man, I really do miss Brothers and Sisters, that show really nailed how to do friend/family melodrama featuring this demographic.  The casting was superb (Sally Field, Rob Lowe and Emily Van Camp!) and it was almost always well-acted.

  7. I never got on the "This is Us" bus, and thought this show would be a good alternative.  The concept is great, but the writing truly sucks.  As other posters have noted, these characters behave in ways no normal humans would.  Other than the fact that most of them relate really well to children (a television rarity, IMO) they have very strange social skills and priorities.  And I have to admit, I had forgotten who Ashley/Shady Secretary was until coming over to these boards.  I actually thought she was a per-diem bartender, lol.

When Katherine described the group of people to Hunter as "my friends," I just laughed. A more accurate description would be "my husband's friends, the woman who my husband had an affair with, and her husband's former employee ."

Was that weird, or what?  "Friends?"  Katherine, those people barely seemed to tolerate you because you were with Eddie.  If you have no other friend options outside of this circle, things might not be going well.

    2 hours ago, ElectricBoogaloo said:

I could not stop rolling my eyes at Eddie and his constant pity party. He had two women and now he has zero, but he is still chasing after both of them.

Eddie is a lost man-child.  His friends know this and don't seem to be able to bring themselves to tell him.  Other than how good he is as a father, Eddie doesn't really seem to have any other redeeming characteristics.

Courtney and Georgie all died over ten years ago and Kristina 15--I don't know that that's recent, and I suspect if you counted up deaths of young women 1985-2000 it might be a similar number (Dawn Winthrop, Lily Corinthos, Katherine Bell, Nancy Eckhert, off the top of my head.) Though Georgie especially I would have liked to see just go off to grad school.

That being the case, GH has been killing off young women longer than I remember.  Definitely not cool, although I had no particular affection for any of the characters you mentioned.

I should have added this to the above post.  Btw - was dead Kiki played by an entirely different actress or were my eyes playing tricks on me?

It sure wasn't. If she wants to fuck someone, pick up a ONS at Gene's Bransford Roadhouse (est. 1987). They are not doing Ava any favors here. I know we're supposed to find it gross that Ryan is emotionally manipulating her, but given the general misogyny of the show, the optics of Lauren's death (the last thing she did was have sex with Griffin; her harassment suit against Bensch), and the juxtaposition of Ava and Ryan sexing it up and Lauren lying dead in the cabin, there's an extra layer of sleaze here for me that is really, really distasteful.

As another poster commented, this show has a really bad habit of killing off young women - Kristina Davis (Alexis' sister), Georgie, Siobhan (Lucky's late wife), Disney Princess Sabrina, Courtney, and so on, almost like they were disposable spare parts.  Even though Siobhan McKenna was a human plot point, her death at the hands of Anthony Zacharra always bothered me, because there was such a prurient aspect to it,  the character really seemed to get such satisfaction from needlessly ending the life of an innocent young woman.  This didn't happen so much in "Old School" GH, every once in a while a peripheral character, like Alexandra Quartermaine in the Ice Princess S/L, would be sacrificed for dramatic effect and to advance the story.  Most of these recent deaths seem to be so gratuitous and unnecessary, IMO.

Crystal working in that sleazy spot period let alone at her age may be the most depressing part of this reboot.

I love fried catfish!  And cobbler, though I prefer cherry to peach.

As a black man living in the northeast (with southern roots), I never got the "black folks love fried catfish" television trope.  Must be a bayou thing.  Most of my seafood-loving relatives in NC, SC and GA are all about the whiting (or as we pronounce it "whiteys").  I've tried fried catfish on a few occasions and found it much too gamey.  Different strokes, I guess.

had to delete this crap off my dvr. no one has any chemistry with anyone. everyone in the white family are bad actors. not funny. could have been ok. but this is shit.

I absolutely agree with you.  They need to phase out that family and retool the show.  They need to build the series around Cedric and the rest of the cast that play his family.  They are such wonderful actors.  His wife on the show is especially good.

I think this is a show that's going to take one, maybe one-and-a-half seasons to find its groove.  So far it's been a little hit-or-miss, aside from the instant chemistry between Beth Behrs and Tischina Arnold (that CBS is trying to quickly capitalize on).  If the show hasn't begun to congeal in the next 5-10 episodes I might be among those moving on, much as I like Cedric.

The best thing about the GH Baddies' "Chamber of Horror" is that it underscores what a lazy, uninspired, and boring serial killer Ryan Collins is.  He's been storming around Port Charles almost two months and only has a single kill to his credit.  Laura Spencer has a higher body count, lol.

  15. Yikes, as hard as I'm trying to like this show you guys go and pick out all its flaws, lol.  Lena is so going to be the show's next meta-human.  Nothing about Lena says she'll test her tech on a human subject, even a willing one.  She couldn't deal with the consequences of a failed experiment on a human subject.

And as others have said, Supergirl as an employee of the DEO makes absolutely no sense.  If, as General Haley implies, the DEO is a military organization, wouldn't that make SG an officer with some kind of assigned rank?  Also, since everyone at the DEO seems to know that Kara=SG and Brainy=Alien from the Future, I can't imagine General Haley isn't aware of these facts.  She'd look like the world's biggest idiot otherwise.  Also General...you could have just given Brainy the recipe for your sweet potato pie...I've found that nutmeg, vanilla extract, allspice and a graham cracker crust make for a first class pie, just saying.

Puff the Magic Dragon is the latest baddie to put Kara flat on her butt, it really doesn't take much, does it?  Finally dawned on me, this show is going with a Byrne-esque reduction of SG's powers to make her seem less invincible.  On a positive note, I like how they finally explained why J'onn doesn't like using his telepathy, takes another Deus ex machina off the table and helps keep the character in play.

How does Kara keep straight who she has met as Supergirl, and who as Kara Danvers?  She had to pretend to have heard, not met, about Manchester Black at Thanksgiving, but it would be an easy mistake to make.

Overall, Kara does the worst job in history of maintaining a secret identity.  She's constantly seen with all of SG's friends and acquaintances, it shouldn't be that hard for folks who know both of them to make the connection.  Reminds me of an episode from the 60s Batman show where Robin has to rescue a kidnapped Bruce Wayne from the Joker.  After they beat the bad guys, Robin asks Bruce, "aren't you going to press charges?"  In a rare bit of realistic writing for that series, Bruce replies, "no, then we'd have to appear in court.  You and I have been seen together in public too much as it is."  Hard to believe that no one has realized Kara and SG not only look alike, but travel in the exact same circles.

For all her faults she did actually manage to not have addiction nearly ruin her life and broke out of the Plunkett mould. In her early 20's she's sober, has no criminal record (IIRC) and is no longer living off her boyfriend - that was the one thing I truly did not like about her. She's in a way better place than both her grandmother and her mother were at that point and if she's weary of letting Christy back into her life I can't blame her for that. It seems realistic - with some time she should get to a point where she's ready. Until then Christy has to accept it as part of her making amends. The scene with Bonnie hugging Christy was terrific and scores high on the 'CalltheMidwife' meter (i.e. how many tissues were ruined during watching).

This is one of the most thought-provoking threads I've read on this site in a while.  A lot of good perspectives.  My heart goes out to those of you who grew up in alcoholic families.  My dad was a high-functioning (i.e., weekend) alcoholic long before the phrase was even coined.  Reading the comments here have helped me understand Violet's position a bit more, although I still don't like her actions.  It would be great if this show dealt more with the concept of alcoholism/addiction as a disease.  Science has proven that it is to an extent hereditary.  But seeing my dad slowly die of alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver when I was 23 has led to me living the life of a complete tea-totaler.  As another poster said, you live what you learn.  Violet, as far as we know, is living clean and sober, so there's that.  But the hardest part is putting the dysfunctional family dynamic behind you, an issue a lot of us struggle with daily.

I liked his art scene with Aiden and when Aiden took a bite of the same ice cream bar Franco had just taken a bite from, it was the first time his eating actually added a nice natural father/son -ish touch to the scene.

RoHo eats in almost every scene now.  He really doesn't need craft services between takes.  I remember a scene years ago when Luke showed up at Alexis' door eating a Croissant out of a paper bag while they talked.  It looked natural, organic.  In RoHo's case it's just affect, an annoying tic based on the fact that he brings little else to the party.

There's the line of demarcation between the three.  Christie would have never pulled that scam, but Bonnie in her younger years would have had absolutely no problem.  Could be that the "life preserver" moniker is based on Violet's conscious or sub-conscious identification with grandma.
