  1. Olbermann's video reminded me of this quote, which I first saw at the Holocaust Museum. It has stayed with me strongly since then.

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
    Then they came for me
And there was no one left
    To speak out for me

P2C2E, I somehow missed your post about your dog's diagnosis, and thus came off like a complete asshole for posting after it without offering my condolences and best wishes on the diagnosis.  I'm not familiar with the condition, so have nothing informative to offer, but wish you and your lab the best!

Don't worry about it @Bastet, I didn't think that at all!

The vet recommends an x-ray to see if it has metastasized. She also recommends that regardless of the lump being benign or malignant that it should be removed. On the other hand, because of it's location (right under Sophie's shoulder) it's a difficult place for an incision to heal. If it is malignant then there is a very high chance of it coming back in the same place. Right now it doesn't seem to be bothering Sophie at all or restricting her movement.

It would be difficult for us to care for her post-surgery. We both work full-time and have another dog at home so it would require some creative doings to keep her in a low movement atmosphere for long enough to heal properly. We're leaning towards just leaving the lump there until it's affecting her quality of life and go from there.

I had a conniption fit the other day because I could not find a single variety of gum or mint that didn't have some kind of fake sugar as an "artificial flavoring." I know to bypass anything that says "sugar free," but f*ck you, ALtoids and Juicy Fruit and DoubleMint and Starbucks mints, for not pointing out that you now use some form of fake sugar. LifeSavers is the only brand I can find that uses sugar, still, but did they have plain old LifeSavers at the welcome center kiosks? Oh, no, too hard to fit one more brand among the ten thousand already there. Phhhhhtttt....

When I got my Samsung smart phone from AT&T, my bill went up 50% because I suddenly had a "data plan." (I'm really bare bones--I also pay per text.)  I told them I didn't want a data plan because my home wi-fi is too pathetic to download data.  They said:  Too bad.  Your phone has the capacity, so you're required to have the plan.

For this and several other reasons, I'm going to switch to SmartTalk soon, after 30 or 40 years with AT&T.  Kind of scary.  Advice would be welcome

Check out AT&T's Go phone plans, which are a pay per month plan. You can get those without data.

  5. My summer food is homemade potato salad. As soon as we have a sunny spell, I start craving it. We had a weirdly sunny spring, so I've already made it a few times. I make a big batch of potatoes and eggs, split it in half and then my partner and I doctor our own halves to our specifications. It works out really well!

  6. The Archer twins were discussing that the plan was complicated. I don't think that what we saw was Archer-level complicated. There needs to be more twists. I'm imagining next season with the human Archer appearing and dismissing everyone's upset tirades with, "but your faces! You should have seen your faces!" and laughing hysterically.

  7. Apparently I've watched too many crime shows because my first thought when I see GSW is gunshot wound.

I actually like it a lot now that I've got the gist of it. I can take a quick photo of something silly and can either send it directly to somebody, where it will last for no more than 10 seconds and then is pretty much gone, or I can put it up for a day before it's gone.  It's like Instagram without the permanent record.

Just a reminder to everyone that since taking screen shots exist, even Snapchats can be permanent. Anything you send to someone can be saved by them and used in the future. It's unlikely an issue for our group here, but kids these days...you just never know. So, be safe, be smart, and never post something you wouldn't want to see in an interview!
