  1. What a great interview. Honesty is interesting. I cannot stand hearing the standard "we all got along" BS that comes spewing out of people's mouths. Questions were asked that that required honest answers and for once we get them. Does that make Tim wrong, does that taint the image of the other judges. No. It simply allows one to see some of the dynamics behind the show. It makes me wonder how the twins were received and perhaps what the real discussions sound like when the cameras aren't on.
  2. Ha ha yeah she has the rights to the fashion of much of the Muslim world. You're right the whole idea of someone's look is ridiculous. Glad Ayana didn't win. She is getting rather smug ( to be honest most are) and it grates. Kenya's looked cheap and too 80's for me. It reminded me of something from the Seinfeld "puffy shirt" collection.
  3. Easy to reproduce or not this was in my opinion the judges way of making up for their blatant hypocrisy during the previous judging. I wish they brought back that old wind bag Hadid to eat some crow as well. With all due respect that adage is BS. None of the designs had the impact of avant garde styles. Ayana's came close but it really was just an enlarged Shopkin. They needed to thin the field and Amy was an easy target using the "boring" rationale. Claire knew she was caught. She exemplified the attitude of someone who has never had to take responsibility for her actions. I really wish producers wouldn't continue to cast these horrid people.
  4. I loved Michael's reaction. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a short speech to the judges outing them for the shills they apparently are. Speaking or acting up in the face of shear hypocrisy is a good thing. It's not sour grapes. No one is a rat. This is about using people to create drama and ratings. I have nothing but contempt for the producers and the judges who play along.
  5. What a joke. This outcome seems designed for drama. Claire recreated something done a million times and gets paid for it. THERE WAS NOTHING UNIQUE ABOUT HER OUTFIT! There is no integrity in the judging. If this is a winning design then all future contestants should simply redo classic versions of whatever is called for in the challenge.
  6. When will Star Trek actors and writers learn to not equate logic with arrogance. Overall the second episode was a tad better but I would have reversed the shanking and let Michelle Yeoh conquer the stars!
  7. Very well said. The other issue is second guessing the captain in favour of information that comes after a quick chat with your daddy figure who doesn't have all the facts. The messianic, I'm in possession of all the right answers attitude is grating.
  8. The issue for me is chain of command. If the focal point of the show is the second in command, they will either become the de facto captain (so just write it that way!) or there' going to be mutinies aplenty! I don't for a minute believe that you can translate the "Vulcan hello" to this situation. Both the context and hardware are different. Getting some half assed advice about diplomatic scenarios from ages ago played out by groups that don't fit your own shouldn't translate to mutiny and a live fire exercise. Get rid of number one and bring on more Michelle Yeo.
  9. Jesus when did she get elected to speak for all curvy girls. Women, whatever their size, are individuals and are likely to have differing opinions on how they wish to style themselves. As far as I am concerned Ayana's was neck and neck with Sentell's for worst look. When one of the judges made reference to Tsunami's clothes and said "This is why people won't consider recycled material for clothes" I couldn't help but notice that Anaya was a poorly thrown together mishmash or torn an poorly painted junk. I thought the judges would laugh those sleeves off the runway...the rest of the dress was great but WOW those sleeves! SHAWN MUST GO!
  10. Producer: So here's the thing. We created this narrow and inflexible concept and it's led to Faina having to go home. Phil was supposed to go so we're changing the rules once again and he won't be moving forward. Oh and the fact that we didn't give you a heads up- too f'in bad. The drop in quality and integrity of this show is stunning. At this point if Andrew doesn't win it will show an even greater contempt for the audience.
  11. What a MESS. In a competition one should not interfere with someone else's work. If they lost because she made bad make-up (and Michael Westmore certainly was indicating that was the case) then she could easily have been gone. That said Glen Hetrick is a pompous ass. I have no doubt that in commercial shops things are removed from junior sculptors forms all the time. It's a damn business not some sort of artistic retreat where people can explore their process. So a foreman could easily be the one to cut something away and have someone start over. The show has set up a situation where someone is supposed to be responsible for the product but can't really influence the outcome and then may or may not be blamed/praised for the makeup depending on who is scheduled for elimination.
  12. Why did they even cast Al. He was not responsible for the most egregious mistakes on the team and yet he had to go...almost as though it was a for gone conclusion they were going to keep mister monotone and the inept foreperson. i am really surprised that after running a show that focused on collaboration and lack of forced drama (to the point that even celebs were giving shoutouts on twitter) they decided to go with this mess of a format filled with mediocre artists and judging shenanigans. Oh and Mackenzie has decided out with the ribbon dresses and in with psychedelic stripper wear?
  13. Given this is the first challenge and everyone is adapting to these circumstances I will give them the benefit of the doubt on the quality of the makeups. What I will not stand for is this ridiculous need to put someone in charge and then berate them for the failings of their teammates. If the older foreman was responsible for the chest piece that sent that young woman home then the foreman of the winning team should always be the winner on their team as he or she must have lead them to these outstanding designs. You can't always be everywhere during that process and losing the designer should have recognized the failing and done something other than leaving it out there for judging. Cover it with hair and the underlying poor sculpting forms a decent framework. Stop trying to create drama and a fall guy. As for the person leaving when the loser was announced...meh. There is too much forced empathy on the show. The wails of disbelief and cloying group hugs are unnecessary. I appreciate the camaraderie on the show and like that they help one another but it can end right there.
  14. Good lord those judges are assholes. If you want people to follow the challenge then don't rave about a Moroccan sausage with Harissa that is meant to be from BELGIUM! Mark McKewan has always rubbed me the wrong way but damn that bitchy food blogger can't be gone from my TV soon enough. She was terribly rude to Todd last week and she has yet to do anything redeeming this week.
  15. Ryan clearly had the best tattoo. Given the consistent quality of her work I find it strange that she holds on so tightly to this foolish alliance. Despite her very good tattoo Nikki remains a vaguely racist ass.
  16. Not discounting the sexism which was rather transparent but incessant focus on Boneface and how he doesn't deserve to be in the competition smacks of something other than artistic snobery.
  17. If Boneface is going to be called out for sexism then I have to also say that the depth of Nikki's disdain may indicate some racism. There I said it and I'm not ashamed.
  18. Why even pretend that this challenge had a focus. None of these designs evoked the fairytale characters they supposedly referenced. The problem is that if you really do include such elements you get a critique that mentions the dreaded "costumey" or are told you are too literal. At this point I am hard pressed to credit these judges with any sort of objectivity or even taste. Asha's look was horrid. It looked poorly made and the model did it no favours. For Issac to say that Alexander's dress was in poor taste when it was placed next to Asha's and near to Sam' abomination underscores that he rightfully fell from the heights he attained earlier in his career.
  19. So this means Fitz can move on to Bobbi once she is freed up?
  20. Complete and utter bullshit that Scott was passed over and that Evan got in. That turd couldn't be polished and all the references to "form language" or "speckle patterning" or whatever other jargon they want to throw around will never convince me this was anything other than a push by producers or some other higher ups to get Evan in. They should give the 100000 to Ben for that creepy uncle. Probably the best makeup ever.
  21. How Lamarckian of you. Selective pressure and maintenance of characteristics that provide greater advantage underlie evolution and as such Ben should have been laughed off the stage. For that matter most were rather poor attempts at demonstrating the evolution of humans under the pressures imposed by those environments. I would say that Stevie's aquatic human was rather appropriate for this challenge. Vestigial nostrils with the implied emergence of gills. Subtle changes to the skin to reflect emergence of characteristics that would serve a water dweller. After the Westmore critique I thought that Scott did the best job both in terms of fitting the challenge and technique.
  22. Sorry for the confusion. You're right that I extrapolated the neo-origin from the description. Maybe less is more because that resonated with me while having the others simply makeup characters to suit their vision annoyed me terribly. I agree that focusing on the face and then forcing the literary aspect on them was difficult. It is rare that a face itself can evoke a specific character. I suppose that is a failure on the part of the person that designed the challenge. Perhaps a true FOCUS challenge would be to have them do a face and then shroud the rest of the model so the judges just have one thing to examine.
  23. They were never required to weave the origin into the makeup. For me the creative spin was to remain in that world, of which SP is essential, but due to the horror component of the mash-up strip the humour from the character and make him an unwilling creation of DQ. Some of the contestants may have been a bit simplistic but they stayed true to the challenge. If it had been "set a vampire in Victorian London" then good for Jasmine. However, she simply chose to ignore the book. She could have made a vampire Holmes because simply making a male vampire doesn't necessarily evoke Dracula. YMMV but to me straying as far from the stories as Nora and Jasmine did was disappointing.
  24. To me this assessment is unfair. The challenge was a mashup of the story and the genre. That meant not only should they be technically proficient but creative as well. The weaving of the story about sanche panza's origin made that contestant's character so good while fitting the challenge. The Holmes vampire was the result of imo-laziness. It seemed like Jasmine was comfortable with the vampire portion but couldn't be bothered to go that extra creative mile.
  25. The right person went home but what annoyed me the most was the neither Nora nor Jasmine got called out for failing on the Mash-up. Essentially they but said we want to do X character and I'll just say they live in the story's universe. NO! DO the damn challenge. That was what was so great about the Don Quixote Dragon...Well executed and a clever spin on the story.
