Since they were so specific about the drug Sherlock is taking, I looked it up. At first I thought they were off base with it, since gabapentin is an anti-seizure drug, but it turns out that anti-epileptics are useful for the type of headaches associated with post-concussion syndrome. Gabapentin isn't an opioid, but stopping using it can cause withdrawal symptoms. It's probably a reasonable drug for someone with Sherlock's history and symptoms. It does carry an increased risk of suicidal ideation, however, and we've already heard him say that he doesn't think he can live like this. I'm sure Watson knows all this and is on the look-out for issues. Sherlock's doctor was also right that rest is really the only cure for post-concussion syndrome. A good job all around by the writers. Medical issues aren't always handled so accurately on tv, even on medical shows. And Jonny is crushing it in his performance. I liked this case. It was fun - just convoluted enough to be be interested but not so far afield that it was ridiculous. And as the wife of a military re-enactor, I was glad to see the re-enactors treated like anyone who takes a hobby seriously and that even Sherlock didn't make too much fun of them. It's an easy target and I'm glad they didn't go there.

Hooray for Claire! Glad she won, especially since she teaches a "dead" language that no one studies any more. (Ha) I loved that she will use her grant to buy Latin language books for her classroom. I loved reading modern stuff in Latin. We used to read "Asterix et Obelix" in Latin. And everyone's favorite, "Winne ille Pu," which she mentioned. Rachel would have been an OK winner, but I was really glad Judy didn't make it. As I recall, she only won her round because the other contestants crashed and burned in the FJ and bet stupidly. Two easy FJs in a row. At least everyone got this one.

I already deleted the episode, but I think the lederhosen clue had the word leather in it. Not to mention the picture of leather shorts. Leather/leder - although a lot of Jeopardy questions rely on Latin word orgins (edentate, for example), English really is a Germanic language. Netiquette - people need to stop trying to make that word happen. No one ever knows what it is. FJ was an instaget.

I agree. The procedural element was always the weakest part of the show. It just never jelled. The divine shenanigans were always much more interesting. I guess they didn't have money for CGI, but there's ways to be interesting without special effects. Sadly, they just never found their groove. Or their audience.

That was a decent game - good players, crisp clue calling and not too many cringy TS's. I got Cloverfield and quack. In Blake Edward's classic film, S.O.B., a character refers to a Hollywood "Dr. Feelgood" as a shyster. He replies indignantly, "Madam, a shyster is a disreputable lawyer. I am a quack!" I also got the very satisfying FJ of pocket veto. You don't really hear about them much any more. I don't think the last couple of presidents have used them.
-
I didn't get many TS's tonight - just hitch and which. I suppose the galop should have been the clue for William Tell (the Lone Ranger galloping on his horse), but to be frank I didn't even know the William Tell Overture was from an opera. Although now that I think about it, what else could an overture be for? Scottie was a hottie for sure. And he'll definitely be back for the finals, with that score. Poor Mary Alice. I liked her but yeah, she really got sucked in by the category. It would have been better to bet conservatively and either hope the others missed it or try for a wild card spot. Darn Alex.

I know. It's wide, long, and mountainous. I think it's that it's one of the largest states on the east coast. I looked it up and technically, New York has more square feet, but PA is blockier, so it feels like it takes forever to drive through. North Carolina is big too. Not compared to states like Texas or Montana, but still big compared to most eastern states.

I guess Gold Rush and Ain't She Sweet were before their time. (Also before mine, but that doesn't mean I didn't know them. Duh.) Also got the 8th Wonder of the world and the University of Mississippi. I call an instaget one I get before Alex finishes reading the clue so "The Globe" wasn't quite that for me but I did say it authoritatively and nodded my head. I didn't remember exactly when they rebuilt it, but I knew it was within recent memory. Also, they used it in the Doctor Who episode The Shakespeare Code and showed the thatched roof. Being a sci-fi-loving Anglophile comes in handy occasionally. It was unusual that they got permission to film there and shows how beloved Doctor Who is.

I thought of Nashville, too. Also Chicago. Although I guess Chicago isn't named after a person. Fargo never entered my mind. For the regular game, I got hai, Hong Kong, manners and LeCarre. I was sorry they didn't give Claie "cuff." At least it was funny.

EIYKI (easy of you know it) definitely needs to happen. And this one was for me. I also got chin, Moses, lead, cross-eyed and "just one more thing..." I've also seen the original Around the World in 80 Days, although it was on tv.

Yes, and I think it was all people named some variation of Lake or Rivers. Hence, Emerson,Lake and Palmer. Another example of why, even if you're going to skip around looking for the DDs, it's smart to a least do the first question in a category to get a feel for what the topic really is. Too many category jumpers get caught by this - they pick a harder, big money question and then miss because they don't understand what the category is.

Well, she was a video insert on Jeopardy, so it worked out. I was sad that he wasn't a judge, and that they didn't do Drag Jeopardy. But I guess the Snatch Game is the closest they get to a game show. And he gave Ru an "Amen" at the end, which was fun. She said he was a fan of the show. You go, Alex. Good for you.

See, it's the "easy if you know it" effect. I knew that Leodegrance was Guinivere's father (and that he gave them the Round Table), so that one was an instaget for me. This one, I knew it had to be WWII, but I just couldn't think of anythng that fit. I got bat, Paulie Walnuts, pallid, and Emerson Lake and Palmer. That last one was a head-scratch. I mean, they gave them Lake for gosh sakes. Josh really knew his Brontes! Too bad he blanked on moors. He's so strong across so many categories. But in the interest of not jinxing him, I agree, he's terrible and annoying (wink wink).

S06.E01: An Infinite Capacity for Taking Pains
Kathira replied to CooperTV's topic in Elementary [V]
Ha! This is probably better than whatever the writers are actually planning. -
One thing I thought was funny in tonight's game was that one of the responses was "mesothelioma." There are so many ads for that ("If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Mesothelioma you may to be entitled to financial compensation. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer linked to asbestos exposure.... ) that it's become a meme. There are often ads for it during Jeopardy. Cheeky writers!

Meriwether Lewis of Lewis and Clark. Their expedition started in 1804, so it was a pretty good guess. He doesn't seem to have been married, though. I liked the new champ, too. He was smart and fast on the clues, and did not seem to have too many annoying mannerisms.

I think the idea that they used them so people couldn't tell how old a movie was is a myth. It's probably just because they looked fancy and it turned into an instant tradition.

Nice article on ncbcnews.com with high praise for Elementary - https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/cbs-elementary-succeeds-because-it-s-about-so-much-more-ncna870376 It gives a nice summary of what's great about the show and sets it above other modern interpretations of the Holmes mythos.

Definitely. Once you had LV, I thought it was obvious. Plus the LV logo on bags, etc. is really pretty common. I also got gullet, the Chieftains, and the missed DD of obstruction of justice. Sorry Osman lost.

Alex was right on that - it's definitely LEZ-ay. I've also heard lay-zay, but lah-zay is right out. It's always the problem with words that you've only read, rather than heard someone say (assuming that person says it correctly). Heeawatha definitely gets a big NO.

Season Four Talk: Spring Baking Championship
Kathira replied to GaT's topic in Spring Baking Championship [V]
I thought Caleb's geode looked more like a lava flow, and agreed that Heather's looked like a river. Nacho was really the only one who nailed a "geode" look. It seemed like he had the least flavor issues, also, despite Duff's "donkey kick" for Caleb's. I wasn't a super fan of Nacho, but I guess he deserved the win. -
It asked about a Declaration of Indepence signer from Georgia whose name was like a shirt closure. Alexandra said Button, which Alex quickly accepted, saying "Yes, Button Gwinnett." He really should have either asked for the last name or ruled it wrong, especially since the category was B.G. names. I got banzai, but not netsuke. The FJ was one of those where I got it so quickly, I started second guessing myself. But who else could it have been? Lovecraft, maybe, but he wasn't a contemporary of Whitman. So I stuck with Poe.

Best Baker In America - General Discussion
Kathira replied to Simon47's topic in Best Baker In America
I hope Dwayne gets a chance to judge or even have his own show. I really liked him and he seemed very knowledgeable, even more than Andy who apparently teaches this stuff. He had a nice combination of down-home style with the technicalities of baking. Plus it would be nice to have some diversity at the table. -
Best Baker In America - General Discussion
Kathira replied to Simon47's topic in Best Baker In America
I just marathoned this show this weekend, and I'm really glad Dwayne won. It was clear he was a very smart guy and that he really knew his stuff. He was clearly paying attention in class. I also liked his refreshing, "I'm doing this for myself" attitude. I'm looking forward to the new season.
