  1. Kreskin would have been ironic since Randi is probably best known for debunking mentalists like him. Interestingly, that X-Files episode featured a man who is considered by many to be the greatest living master of sleight of hand, Ricky Jay. He does a lot of consulting for movies and tv featuring magic. Jay is also a historian of magic and is also known for debunking fraudsters. Even if you're not a fan of magic, I suggest checking out Ricky Jay's cups and balls routine, which he calls The History Lesson. It's truly one of the most amazing (and interesting) things I've ever seen.
  2. That was indeed a beautiful portrait of young Bobby Kennedy. My first flash of thought was that it was Robert Redford. But then I got my brain on track and went from RFK to Attorney General to Justice Dept. just before the buzzer. I might not have had time to write it. I got Lutheranism, Colloden, James Randi and poacher. It was fun to have James Randi in a game where they also had 3 card monte as a clue. Randi is a master of sleight of hand, and has spend most of his life attacking fake psychics, con artists and frauds.
  3. I got R. Crumb, which I hope they would have given me rather than his whole name. He always signed his work R. Crumb and I think his real first name isn't that well known. Also Iron Curtain, Nixon, Jolt, Champagne, the Carpenters, elder care, the Indian Ocean and the Roman Empire. There were a lots of TS's today! Totally blanked on Colorado. I guessed Florida, which I figured was wrong, but couldn't come up with anything else other than maybe California.
  4. I liked Alex, too. He was good-looking and seemed like a kind person. I got the Mughal empire, lynching, squid, Zane Grey and the Lone Ranger. FJ was an instaget. One of my favorite movies. The other ladies have passed on, but Katherine Johnson is still alive at 99. I'm so glad she has lived to receive the recognition that she so rightly deserved. Google images of her - she's an amazing looking person, ancient and beautiful, with that incredible intelligence just shining out of her eyes.
  5. Probably football.
  6. Quentin is often my least favorite character on this show, but I was really touched by his scene with his father. It felt like Quentin finally came into himself as a man, as an adult, having an adult conversation with his father. Not asking permission for what he was going to do, but discussing it openly and honestly. Especially when they led into it with the scene where he says he thought quests were supposed to change people. I need to rewatch this season, but I think they've all really changed and grown up this year. Julia is becoming a goddess, whatever that means, OG Penny has accepted his role in the library, and I guess you could say he's literally changed, since we seem to be sticking with Penny23 at least for now. Josh has grown up a bit. And seeing Elliot and Margo accepting their roles as the leaders of Fillory has been great. Elliot kneeling to Margo as high king was a great cap to everything they've been through this year. I also loved seeing the development of the Fairy Queen over these last episodes, as her plan to save her people by taking over Fillory was thwarted. Breaking the fairy deal to save the slaves seems to have been a real turning point for her, as she was willing to accept that the Children of Earth might not be all bad. And now in this episode, accepting that she and her people could be a real part of Fillorian society, not just the evil scary "other." Giving Margo the fairy eye was a terrific touch and I can't wait to see what happens with that next year. I've never been super impressed with Candis Cayne as an actress, but she has really sold it in the second half of the season.
  7. Missed FJ, but ran the category on novels about Jesus. I tried to tell them The Last Temptation of Christ and The Robe, but they didn't listen to me. I actually pre-guessed The Last Temptation based on the category title. I also got blasting caps. Joey got one - that pvc pipe stands for poly vinyl chloride.
  8. I got the Beatles, although I hesitated thinking it was too easy. I quickly came up with Hard Day's Night, but couldn't come up with the other one. Probably because it isn't about hard work, LOL. What convinced me that it was the Beatles was the fact that it was 2 number 1 hits within 7 months. I don't think anyone else in that time frame could match that. When the category came up, I was afraid it was going to be that stupid "I'm Sorry" by Brenda Lee. It was the #1 hit the week I was born. I hate that drippy song and it always comes up for me in those "What was happening the year you were born" things.
  9. Me too! I knew there were early printed versions of the Bible before the King James and I thought it was possible that this was one. But yeah, that was a lot of apostles. LOL
  10. Watch it again. I had to rewind and pause to really see it in full. It started out not too bad but by the end it curled up the whole side of face into a snarl with lips pulled back and teeth exposed on that side. I wondered if the actor did it, or if it was an effect. The first part seemed like it might have been CGI, but it could also have been a practical effect, especially with the lip.
  11. I also thought that, other than the tic, he was almost angelic looking. He certainly looked that way when his face finally relaxed in death. I think they cast him that way, because otherwise the boys would never have gone with him. No one would have hired him for a job that involved interactions with the public if he was a hideous monster, even over and above the tic. I have to go back and watch it again, but I also thought that him being a bit feminine/delicate in appearance, may have led him to focus on the female-presenting boy prostitutes. He both identified with them and hated them, because he saw in them the characteristics that he thought led the original Beecham to attack him. Taking the eyes must have been about the way they looked at him, with disgust and fear and pity. As he said, he wouldn't take Kreizler's eyes because he wanted him to see him. Was it Kreizler that said that in the end, they went looking for evil and found just another damaged child? By the way, did we ever find out definitively how he had contact with the boys, other than being a census enumerator? Or why the boys didn't recognize the picture? Granted, it was a terrible likeness. Eyewitness composites have come a long way since then, LOL. There were also a bunch of clues that didn't seem to go anywhere, like the fingerprints. I really enjoyed this show and was on the edge of my seat the whole episode. Normally, I am on the computer at the same time as I'm watching most shows, and almost always time shift, but this one, I put the distractions down and watched it in real time.
  12. I liked Randy's collection overall, and it seems to be the kind of things their clients want. I'm too old for that nonsense, but when I was young, I remember thinking I wanted my fiance to think I was hot walking down the aisle. Not "wear napkins on my boobs" or "expose myself in church" hot, but I definitely wanted to show my figure.
  13. I like Lynn and I'm glad she won. And yes, I confess I also snickered when the FJ clue was about Lesbos. And then felt guilty for stereotyping. Rocking a butch look doesn't necessarily mean anything about a person's sexuality. I did guess Turkey, then thought maybe it couldn't be that easy, but couldn't think of anything else. Also got cedars of Lebanon. I was surprised when they allowed "Shawshank" as correct rather then insisting on "The Shawshank Redemption" as the full title, but I guess there aren't any other movies with the word "Shawshank" in the title.
  14. I liked Lisa the first game, especially since she beat Rahul, but she was bugging me tonight. And I usually have a sweet spot for librarians, especially technical ones. Although any tech person who doesn't know Star Trek trivia gets a black mark in my book even without her general annoyingness. For the wager, I imagine that John was thinking he should bet enough to beat Lisa if they both got the right answer and she bet it all. She must have figured he would do that and then bet to beat him if she got it right and he didn't. Unfortunately, I already deleted the episode, so I can't check the numbers, but that's what it seemed like to me. John would have been fine if he had bet more conservatively, but I think he didn't want to take the chance that Lisa would bet it all and get it right. Of course, if he had gotten it right, he would have been fine, too. Oh well.
  15. Yeah, you're probably right. This show is a guilty pleasure for me, but sometimes I just get too disgusted by it and have to stop for a while.
  16. I'm always amazed when the brides put on some incredibly revealing, tacky dress and then go on and on about what a classy princess their fiances will think they are when see them. What will he think when he sees you? Probably that he's about to marry a slut who thinks nothing of spending $5000 on a dress to wear for one day. Not you, FreetheGirlses, your dress is beautiful and you look lovely in it.
  17. Ugh. Since we were pre-empted for b-ball on Thursday and Friday, my dvr faithfully tried to record the overnight showing. Thursday worked OK, but last night the game must have run late and I got Wheel of Fortune and the first ten minutes of Jeopardy, stopping halfway through the interviews. I take it that board-hopping Rahul won. Yuck. At least Peter won a nice amount of money in his two days. I'll head off to Reddit and see if I can find the full episode post.
  18. He may also have identified as an Indian since apparently his abusive mother told him he was a foundling, left on their door step by the "savages." That might have worked into his psychosis. He was an Indian, therefore he killed the way he had been shown that Indians did. (I don't like using the term "Indian" rather then Native American, but that's what they use in the show, based on the language of the time period.)
  19. I got Dyson, espadrilles, Chandler and the 5th Amendment (thanks again to my son's 7th grade social studies book). I also knew that pink lake was in Australia. I have the Atlas Obscura daily desk calendar and Lake Hillier was featured recently. Also the FJ - a good night for me. And a good game even if it was a runaway for the new champ. He's OK.
  20. Very interesting perspective. I've always thought that there was a lot of this factoring into fans' dislike of Martha as a companion on Doctor Who. Freema Agyeman may not be the world's greatest actress, but the bar for female companions in terms of acting is low and she definitely clears it. The excuses are similar to those for disliking Iris - people claim not to like her storyline or her chemistry with the Doctor, but I can't help feeling that as this author points out, she is denigrated for essentially taking a white woman's place - at the side of the lead actor.
  21. I like the new champ. I especially liked his story about being a finalist in the cartoon caption contest for the New Yorker. That's an accomplishment that's probably harder to get than winning on Jeopardy. Now he has at least two very cool things to have in his obituary. I'm jealous. I got vestry and Queen, but missed FJ with Hewlett Packard. I knew it was wrong, but once my brain got stuck on it, I couldn't think of anything else. I think it was a check box on the registration, along with whether or not you are a current college student. I think I might have made the 35 right cut off also, fingers crossed! Maybe being female is an advantage, too, if they try to even out gender representation on the show. Although that's probably cancelled out by the disadvantage of being over 50.
  22. That's the other one I got - glass armonica. Was it just me, or was there a weird edit with that clue? One second they were showing the video of someone playing and the next second Alex was saying the answer. It was hard to tell when the time to buzz in started. I thought they usually can't buzz in until the video or clue reading stops. If it's a TS, there's usually a few awkward seconds where everyone looks blank, the buzzer rings and Alex tells us the answer, shaking his head as if he just knew it and wasn't reading it off his screen. I thought Emily seemed frustrated with the clicker, like she clearly knew the answer several times but couldn't get the timing right. I think I like the new champ. He seemed refeshingly normal. I did take the test tonight, but I'm sure I missed too many to make the cut. Fun, though.
  23. I got Prevention and mentor that I remember. I also got the FJ, although Jordan took the longest to get and even then I wondered if ti was a member of the UN. I'm going to try the test tonight. I've never done it before. I tried the practice tests and did OK, but not great. It should be fun anyway.
  24. My son is in 7th grade and they're studying the Constitution and Bill of Rights, so 1788 was an easy get. FJ was a true instaget - I knew it at a glance. I knew you guys wouldn't like Jack with his weird pausing and hipster hair.
  25. Cooling was part of the question. It was an "item used to cool" or something like that.
