S06.E10: The Adventure of Ersatz Sobekneferu 2018.07.02
Kathira replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in Elementary [V]
I agree. I'm kind of glad that they were handling it that way, to give everyone closure. Too many series go the way of cliff-hanger desperation in their final seasons leaving everyone miserable. Sleepy Hollow, Lucifer, I'm looking at you. Good episode overall. I prefer it when the end of the case doesn't get too far off from the original crime, chasing twists and turns. Joan's outfits are stellar as usual. Moriarty being back combined with Watson's desire to adopt reminded me that Moriarty has a child somewhere. Maybe Joan and Sherlock could adopt her. I would normally strongly resist the idea of adding a precocious kid to a show but it could work. And if not, they can always ship the kid off to boarding school. Babies and toddlers are even more inconvenient on shows and tend to either be forgotten bythe writers or "with the nanny" a lot. -
Please do! Winning three games on Jeopardy is an excellent lifetime achievement and you got a nice chunk of change besides. Congratulations also on not being an annoying contestant. For tonight, I got Prime Suspect, bread and butter (smorebrod), Octobers, June, January and phoenix. Also the FJ. I wasn't sure, but it lept into my head and I couldn't think of anything else.

I instantly thought of "Blame it on Rio." I did eventually get rain, but it wasn't the first thing that popped into my head, or even the second.

I live near two weirdly pronounced places - the town of Chili, which is pronounces Chai-lai (rhymes with jai-alai - no one really knows why) and the town of Charlotte, pronounced Sher-LOTT. I see from that Detriot Free Press article that there's a Shar-LOTT in Michigan, too. Who knew it was such a common pronunciation? I got Alcoa, slides, bullfinch, and neck. I guessed chemise for mantle in the medieval clothing category, but they were going for cloak, rather than shirt. Whiffed on FJ and I'm usually pretty good on both music and the 18th century. Despite Alex reminding us more than once how way way back in time it was, all my mental options were too late - Poe, Byron, Freud. Yay, Scott! Don't feel bad about the buzzer issue. Difficulty with the timing of the buzzer is the most common complaint of contestants. At least you're still winning! Trying not to jinx you, though. BTW, since we talked about Paw Patrol, I've started seeing it everywhere. My son is too old for it, thank God, but it does seem to be pretty popular. Even my mac and cheese is Paw Patrol themed. Unintentionally - I just bought it because it was on sale and Kraft M&C is still usually a reliable kid-friendly food option. I didn't even notice it until my son pointed it out and claimed he wouldn't eat it because he was too old for the show. Ugh. You'll eat the Star Wars shaped ones but not the Paw Patrol ones? They all taste the same!
-
I looked him up, too, and I figure the "hated" show has to be Paw Patrol. It's probably the biggest name show on his filmography and there are definitely a lot of toys associated with it. I got hypertension, Ghostbusters, chili and FJ. Romeo and Juliet was the only tragedy that I could think of that starts with a sonnet. Plus the whole "two households, both alike in dignity" bit is pretty famous. Some of the other plays start with monologues, mostly the histories. Hamlet does have a famous opening line - "Who's there?" but it's definitely not a sonnet! Welcome Scott, great work tonight, coming back from a deficit with a big win!
-
Yay Scott! Much better betting for FJ this time. Although no amount of good wagering strategy would have helped me with that FJ. It was definitely a classic "easy if you know it" answer. I did get quilting and Radiohead, though.

And worse yet, it was written for an advertising campaign, which to my mind makes it not a real song. It's a jingle at best. It's kind of embarrasing, especially considering New York's rich musical tradition. I do admit that the more famous New York songs are more about New York City, although I would still prefer one of them, even being from upstate NY.
-
Oddly, my first thought on FJ was Maine, too. I realized immediately that it was wrong, though. So I quickly ran through early states, figuring it must be from when they were still naming things after European places. New Jersey came to mind pretty quickly - plenty of time to write it down. I also got the Declaration of Independence, the Wicker Man, Robert Osbourne, Medea, and Midgard. Hopefully "Kelly Hundrit" will be one and done. She was really lucky that Jordan had a brain fart there at the end.

I've been rewatching the first series and there was a reference to a Star Trek episode in the one where Quentin is spell-trapped in a mental hospital of his mind. Alice shows up talking about aliens and Quentin says, no that was a Star Trek episode. I think it must have been the DS9 one where Sisko believes he's a writer in the 20th century. So there are definitely folks on the writing staff who are Star Trek fans. There's been other Trek-y stuff threaded in here and there, too.

I got Big Little Lies, Funny Girl and the Divine Mind. My stepfather was a Christian Scientist. When he and my mother married, I was already an adult, but we had some interesting conversations about his beliefs. He wasn't extreme when it came to medicine, which was good. He went to doctors when he had cancer and didn't discourage my mother from going to doctors. Where his beliefs came into play most was regarding routine illnesses. For example, he wouldn't take drugs for a headache or cold. He used natural remedies, which were actually pretty sensible. For FJ, I guessed Canberra, which I knew was probably wrong, but I couldn't think of any other Australian cities. Ali is growing on me as a champ. He knows his stuff, despite the category hopping.
-
Definitely a lot of TSs tonight. Platypus? Really, contestants? How many monotremes are there? And if they didn't know monotreme, how about just strange Australian animals? And worse yet, the Niagara river (running by my original home town). Also got Alpha Centauri, manicotti, gibbon, Galway and strike-outs. To my own surprise, I did get the Surprise Symphony. Strictly a guess - I couldn't think of anything else, and other symphonys I could think of with names were all either too late or not whimsical. I don't mind Ali, although starting at the bottom of categories is definitely annoying. It usually helps to do a couple of the easy ones to get a feel for the category, before jumping to the bottom, as the number of TSs proved agian. My Jeopardy-watching friend pointed out that the heavy, black side-pieces of his glasses make it look like his heavy, black eyebrows extend around the sides of his head. That's the kind of thing that once you've seen it, it's all you can see.

Watched it online today after having been preempted by a special election primary candidate debate. Voting in primaries is important and these upcoming mid-term elections are even more so, but stay away from my Jeopardy! Do get out and vote, though... I got the Tudors, and that was pretty much it. I said Asuncion for the island, which I wonder if they would have accepted. Probably not. It is an island, but it's in the South Pacific, not the South Atlantic. I was also glad that Deirdre won. That was a nice story and it would have been a tiny bit sad if she lost.
-
Ugh, it turns out I'm pre-empted tonight for a primary candidate debate. Guess I'll be watching this one online, as soon as it goes up.
-
Irregardless, I'm glad to see you made a 360 degree turn on that. It's a mute point.

I noticed that, too. But now that "savings" has been accepted as right even on Jeopardy, I think the battle is lost.

30 Seconds Over______. I'm not sure what the category was - something about rock songs. I didn't recognize the name of the singer. I guessed it from the movie. Also got Springsteen and put for dough. FJ really was a stumper for sre. I guessed Virgo. I thought maybe tying the knot, the virgin getting married, but I knew it was wrong. That it was two fishing lines tied together didn't occur to me. I like the champ. She's an aggressive bettor, which I always like to see. Also, she's a sci-fi girl and we need to stick together.

How much Michael disliked that ambrosia was funny today. He couldn't even manage a fake smile and went right for the drink to wash it down. But he's a trooper - when Carla and Clinton started dancing, he put in a big smile and joined it. Persoanlly, I can take or leave ambrosia. It is better with fresh fruit, though. That's definitely true. I agree that it's too bad that they had to show the culinary competition for their last episodes. It felt both rushed and a time suck at the same time. I'm really sad to see this show go away. I was never home every day at this time, but when I was, it was a pleasant diversion, much better than 99% of the crap that's on tv during the day.

Yeah, as soon as genealogy is mentioned, it's Salt Lake City and the Mormons. They're a great resource for that, although I have a low-level dislike for the reasons that they're into it. I also got Future Shock and the Borscht Belt. Grossinger's is abandoned now, but nobody puts Baby in a corner.

Goodbye to super annoying, grinning, twitching, mugging, loud, category-jumping David. He may have committed other Jeopardy sins, but at least he's gone so he won't be there tomorrow for me to have to catalog more of them. I got You Only Live Twice (a particular favorite of Mr. K and me), Bonnie Blue, painter, priest and Japan. Also, having just come back from my son's band concert, the trombone was an instaget. He plays the alto sax, but the brass players tend to stick together. I played in the band, too, but it was the flute for me. Mr. K played the sax, and Little K is following in his footsteps. I've occasionally thought of taking up the flute again, too. We have a couple of different fun community bands around here, mostly made up of adults who miss their glory days in band. (This one time, at band camp...)

Wow, you're right, I barely even noticed that she wasn't there. I liked Linda's ceremony dress. It was really pretty and definitely suited her. I ddn't care for the forest green bridesmaids dresses or the green suit jackets the men had at the reception. Do you suppose all those people paid to fly to Italy for a week for the wedding? Maybe the Scotts paid for them and they were all written off as a business expense since they made a show about it. It still seemed like a lot of people for a destination wedding.
-
Pretty good game tonight. I got Jim Dandy, And (Bible verse opener), Jerusalem, the Pritsker Prize and the FJ. My first thought was maybe rook, but the more I looked at the words and said them out loud to myself, I realized the second one sounded like reina (Spanish for queen) and that they were all feminine. I had enough time to cross out rook and write queen. I like the new champ and won't miss Joe.
-
They were really on fire today. The "what are they going to do, cancel the show?" attitude is really working in their favor. Hilarious.

Yay, finally broke my losing streak on FJ. Famously vain fictional characters with moustaches? Who else could it be? Easy if you know it. I think people were thrown off by the date. Agatha Christie's stuff is so old-fashioned seeming today that it's hard to remember that she lived until 1976. That was a really ridiculous guess. I suppose you could say that Mark Twain was Samuel Clemons' alter ego, but that still doesn't fit the category of fictional characters. I also got skyjacking, chemise, Liberia and Henry the Navigator. I was on a roll tonight. Both missed DD's and FJ. You go, girl! Which I wondered if they would have accepted instead of "Atta!"

The Kookaburra Song. Which would probably have earned a "no, it's the other one" from Alex. And now it's in my head. Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree. Merry, merry king of the bush is he. Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh Kookaburra, gay your life must be. I saw a kookaburra at an aviary. Its' call really did sound like laughing. Loud, raucous, cackling laughing.

I started watching on Monday and all of a sudden we had a new champ. I totally blanked that we had gone to the movies on Friday and I hadn't watched J. We saw Solo, by the way, which was actually pretty good. Not the greatest movie ever made, but a lot of fun. At least I didn't feel like we wasted our entertainment dollars. I like the new champ Ok, although I was rooting for Ian on the family name basis. I wonder if she made her scarf? I got FJ of Nixon, but was kind of distracted for rest of the game, so I don't remember any other TS's. Oh, and count me in the "Buzzy is funny" crew, and I laughed at his humble and self-effacing championship belt. At least he put some of his Jeopardy money to good use. LOL I do agree that a little Buzzy goes a long way, though. I wouldn't like to see him replace Alex. When he does retire, I'd rather have Ken Jennings.
