  1. Ah ha! Watching it for the first time (from my recording it last night) made me think there was either a bleep or an oddly-timed audio glitch. Thanks for filling in the missing phrase. :)
  2. Figured it out, thanks, Kieyra. Slow learner, here! ;)
  3. Nothing to see here...
  4. Just occurred to me: is the iconic Fargo Briefcase Full of Cash going to make an appearance this season?
  5. Anyone notice the pictures of the commanders and wives with their new babies that were hanging on the doctor's waiting room wall? There had been discussion here of how African Americans were banished in the book, but part of the system in this adaptation, and how racism obviously would still be an issue in this New World Order. However there were interracial commander couples pictured (only African American wives, though) and I believe an African American baby was shown in a photo. I think the way to square this would be to realize that even oppressive regimes can make "exceptions" for a select few people who are minorities; those whom The Powers that Be view as acceptable, non-threatening or having earned their approval. For example, see "Carson, Dr. Ben."
  6. Funny what age and different experiences can result in: For me, it is The Right Stuff, and his portrayal of hotshot Alan Sheppard.
  7. The Natasha Richardson movie was good, but had nowhere near the level of detail and production as this series. However, I do think Faye Dunaway as Serena Joy and Robert Duvall as Fred were perfectly cast. The book made note of the food Offred (she wasn't "June" in the book) was given to eat - thin sandwiches on white bread, cups of fruit salad, an apple, etc. "A child's lunch" was how Offred described it.
  8. Once again, vb68, you hit the nail on the head. Everything you said here, times 100. I also missed BD's wit, and agree this was certainly Jessica's best episode, despite the plot drift, as you noted. And I didn't know Kim Carnes presented BD with her gold record! Would've loved to see that recreated! Appropos of nothing: I've figured out over the years that if I am nodding my head throughout reading a post, chances are I'm reading one of vb's. ;)
  9. Thank you, Luna1122! I guess now we've all got to learn Bridge. Dammit, this show's making us do homework. :::waves back, with a big goofy smile::::
  10. Are the titles of the episodes ringing any bells with people? The Martin Freeman season episode titles all referred to specific stories/myths, if IRC. This season's first two episode titles sound very purposefully named, but I'm drawing a blank.
  11. I am so freaking torn about Jessica Lange in this project. The first time I saw her, it was in "Tootsie" and I despised her; only later did I figure out it was her character I couldn't stand. Later, when I saw her in other projects, like Grey Gardens or Cousin Bette, I thought she was amazing, and wondered how I could've judged her talent so incorrectly. Now, I'm right back to not caring for her an actress, and this time it has nothing to do with whether or not I'm rooting for Joan Crawford. Just stop it, Jessica - you're hurting my brain trying to figure this out.
  12. OMG, I seriously didn't know any of this! I guess I bought into the accepted view that she was a young girl in an impossible situation. Yikes, I feel like a I had a huge prank pulled on me. :(
  13. 100% agree - I'm only a very casual Maximilan Schell watcher, and even I thought the actor bore a good resemblance. And, of course, you are right - no one alive is as handsome as Gregory Peck was in his prime. Hell, even in his old age! ;)
  14. I don't think CZJ has ever looked more beautiful...in fact, she she reminds me more of Vivian Leigh than Olivia De Haviland.
  15. I know it's been said before, but damn...Susan Sarandon looks freaking AMAZING at 70, even counting the fact she's probably had work done. Makes me wonder what Bette might have looked like in her fifties if the same level of quality surgery was available back then.
  16. Karina Longworth is a fabulous and meticulous story teller, as well as a great film historian/podcasting guru. Love her show!
  17. As if I wasn't swooning enough over this show, they go and have Kathy Bates as Joan Blondell, which just had me squeeing like a star struck teen. Amazing! Of course, since 90% of my Blondell recollections comes from "Here Come the Brides", I found it to be perfect casting. As always, YMMV. But still!! :)
  18. I want to believe Lenny is an antihero of sorts, but I just see him as being manipulative and selfish, defining the greater good as what benefits his own psychological motivations. For instance, he could have called out sister Antonia in public, rather than praying for her demise, which leaves her without a public admission of guilt or public punishment. I mean, yeah, she's dead and all, but on the Pope's terms, not what would be best for her slaves/captives or the Idi Amin-wannabe running the country. That is not justice. That's just wish fulfilment. I wonder if next season will focus on Lenny's involvement with the New York pedophilia case. There's a lot of unspoken guilt going on with this guy. And one last thing: I adore the costumes. Lenny's white robes are impeccably tailored, not unlike a high-level, extremely well paid American business executive. There is not one wrinkle that shows up between his well-defined shoulder seams. His collar fits perfectly, and he never has a hair out of place. Lenny the Pope deserves a place on the cover of GQ, Which of course adds to the whole mystique.
  19. Thank you, thank you, thank you, because now I know I'm not alone. My sister and I saw this just before Christmas, as we are both huge musical fans. We so wanted to love this, but....eh. In fact, less than "eh". While it started out promising with the dancing drivers amid the traffic, I also noticed the problem with the audio - trying for a more "natural" sound, perhaps? - and the resulting lack of "oomph" was a true distraction. I'm sorry, Emma and Ryan boosters, but these two folks, while talented, are not singers or dancers. As the movie dragged on (and on!) with its forgettable music and endless Emma close ups, Sis and I became more and more unenthralled. Aside from the final fantasy sequence, we left the film disappointed. Glad for those of you who enjoyed it, but unfortunately, I am not on that list.
  20. Sign me up for this, pronto.
  21. Glad I'm not alone in my ignorance. :)
  22. The similarity in the words "Delores" and "Delos".... I'm sure it's only been mentioned here about fifty times, yes? Sorry. :( Due to a glitch on my iPhone (where I was watching this ep at the gym), I had the unusual experience of starting the show in the middle, and thinking it was the very beginning of the episode. My watching began with Ford questioning Delores, and him walking out of earshot, while she whispered "I didn't tell him anything". After watching the rest of the episode, I realized what had happened when the WW podcast I listen to started to talk about scenes I hadn't seen (Young Ford boy host reappearing, blood transfusions, the reveal of Lawrence Redux, etc.). After my little brain figured out what happened, I rewatched the entire episode, start to finish. For some reason, now I am a big proponant of the two timeline theory. I can't say exactly what about my "Momento" experience with this episode led to that, but I'm now about 90% sure William is the MiB. Something to do with the hat, and the timing of the reappearance of Lawrence.
  23. I hated every single presenter this episode, except the Saucy Sisters. Go f yourselves, Unpack Guys, who probably never have traveled with women who need to carry more crap than guys do. Sunscreen thingy scientist? Who's gonna have the patience to use your little viewfinder correctly more than once or twice an outing, or remember to bring it along after two or three times? How about some behavior studies on the ACTUAL USE of this thing? Short sighted. Potato pod guys? A joke product with equally unserious presenters without the charm or self-awareness of "I want to draw a cat for you" guy. All of you, get off my lawn! All except the saucy sisters. Come sit by me, and bring snacks.
  24. Re: Egg-shaped chocolate w/ toys: I am completely confuzzled as to why not one Shark commented on THE TASTE OF THE CHOCOLATE! Usually, a food product doesn't get by the Sharks without at least one shot of someone either gushing over the taste, or making a "errr....not so yummy" face. But this time? No one cared about the chocolate itself. Isn't this a food product we're talking about here, albeit one that houses a toy? WTH?
  25. Interestingly enough, this already WAS a movie. I hope Albert Brooks sues for copyright violations. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101698/?ref_=nv_sr_1
