  1. Our posts crossed in the internet. I will add that the rate of PTSD was quite high also, due to these statistics. I've read that airmen who finally broke down and refused to fly were labeled as LMF, or 'lack of moral fiber', and given ground jobs. Sounds like bullshit to me, but that's the way they did it. There were also what they called "Whispers in the Wind", or verbal scuttlebutt that the fighter command authorized their people to shoot down RAF bombers that appeared to be deserting and heading to neutral countries (Sweden, Switzerland). Desertion rates were high for both the RAF and the USAAF.
  2. That picture of the Merlin - somebody is about to get got! I'd like George to be a Merlin, simply for aeronautic reasons. The P-51 Mustang of WWII fame was really an underperforming plane until Rolls Royce put their 12 cylinder Merlin engine in it. Then it became a fighter.
  3. That sure was convoluted. The only thing I really understood was the scene between Sam and Gabrielle at the pool. I did appreciate some of the snappy dialogue, though.
  4. Carmody: "I'm afraid I might have stuck my foot in my mouth with Mrs. Hall again." Siegried: "Only one? That's progress." Sharp as a tack. I agree about Carmody. I wonder how he managed to navigate through adult life and school. Interrupting the toast? Sit down and shut up! I liked how they focused on Siegfried when WWI was mentioned. I imagine James, being in a critical position, would have received some leniency for AWOL that early in the war. Maybe a short stay in the stockade, but eventually he might be returned to bomber training. A second offense, however, would receive much harsher treatment. Desertion would merit an entirely different level of punishment, if you got caught. Just as a notice, my local PBS station, having started the pledge drive begathon, is showing another episode of "All Things" next Sunday, entitled "Touring the Dales". It may be a rerun from past seasons, but it's worth checking your TV schedule to see if your PBS station is running it.
  5. Hobbs could very easily have sidestepped any questioning by being vague with the guy in the bathroom. "What brings you here?" "We heard about this place, decided to try it out." Instead, he pinned himself in the corner by stating that he was coming back to the restaurant.
  6. I want the "fire" hose that Bodie was using in the dream sequence at the beginning. Step aside, you pedestrians.
  7. Somewhere during the hour they said it was a 6.4 earthquake which, if it was close to the surface, could do some real damage. They also said the epicenter was right near Edgewater. Of course it was.
  8. Bonus points for Hakim for leaving the bomb on the corner where the business behind it has a huge sign saying "EVERYTHING MUST GO!" The actors must be really sweating after those foot chases because of the skin tight bulletproof vests covering up a down jacket.
  9. Salute to the California prison system, as it exists on this show anyway. Bode gets shivved, Sleeper gets crushed by rocks (where did all those rocks come from in a concrete building?), Bode extracts a confession promise from him, and the next afternoon the CDCR says, "Okay, PuppyDogEyes, you can go now." Lots of promotions over the break. I'm not familiar with it, but how long would rehab take after a kidney transplant? Six months seems way short, especially for fireline work. It's a good thing that inmates are allowed to keep needles in their cells...
  10. When that meteor hit outside Yucatan, the outer edges of the blast spread a significant amount of handwavium over parts of North America. That had to be it.
  11. I loved how the staff referred to the commercial network as "the other side". Evil Empire and all that, you know.
  12. Of course, Carmody, with all his book learning and not a speck of common sense, would likely advise that she be put down. "It's the merciful thing to do."
  13. Like those silly Adobe Acrobat ads, they may need to create a monumentally large spreadsheet and put a link to it in the forums. ;-/
  14. You don't exactly fly an F-117 into LAX and then offload a bunch of civilians in presumably stinky clothing onto Gate 27B. That should have attracted some attention, but maybe everyone was still dumbstruck by the sinkhole. Writer's Room - "Alright, everyone, we got a 1 hour show to do here. Minus an inch over a minute for the Previouslys, and 10 minutes for commercials, that leaves us with barely 8 minutes each for each character arc, plus some general fight scenes. Get with it!" T-Rex - "I'm calling my agent." So you build an extremely secret airbase in 10K BC. Why do you need a roadblock at the entrance? And, uh, wouldn't there be some remnants of development even after all that time? Maybe there's something like a Men in Black cleanup crew that goes back in time to remove the evidence. I wonder if the remaining soldiers from Thugs R Us came back to the base and just said "Screw it, there's no adult supervision anymore, I'm taking the day off." Minus the flashbacks, Natalie Zea had, what, three scenes for the entire season? They weren't just woofin' when they said she would have a limited appearance. So, the ScoobyDoo gang sets out to steal cars and they get a classic Caddy, a Ford F-150, and a hot Chevy (I think). How could they ruin that Ford by crashing it?
  15. Well, Wes, it sucks to be you, but you gotta understand that if you push the intended target to the ground, and then turn around and present full frontal in the window, it's not going to end well for you.
  16. I think at one point they showed an entire administrative staff in another part of the building, which I alluded to earlier, because it was a district office. They've gone back to being just a fire station/day care/classroom/investigation center.
  17. I wonder how Victorian England would react to that information, given the circumstances. Certainly the upper classes would turn up their noses (perhaps not as far in private), but the hoi polloi might just as well say "Good on ya, mate. He deserved it."
  18. Well, that was certainly a twist. The civil suit is very likely to get overshadowed by the criminal investigation and who knows if any more bodies suddenly appear. Ruth Wilson sure brings the crazy to her part. Poor Lorna is right at the absolute breaking point.
  19. That's why I use closed captioning on all British productions. "Wait, what did he say?" I forgot for a moment that this was 1940 when Siegfried brought Gerald's dog in. What, no cone of shame? It might be possible that Siegfried would be taken into the Home Guard in some responsibility. Although Yorkshire might not be a prime bombing target nor an invasion site, national defense would be everyone's responsibility at some level. Still, a vet would be an absolute necessity for an isolated nation that has to depend on its own agriculture and livestock to support its military.
  20. Thank you for that. Although this show is fascinating to me, it's really hard to follow at times as it has more characters than an alphabet. For anyone who is wondering, the FLN were the rebel organization in Algeria during its war of independence from France. The OAS was the Secret Army Organization (in French) that were working against France's attempts to settle the Algerian War. Don't ask me how you go about recruiting for your group "The Secret Army Organization". Maybe it's a French thing. Will that murder of the nuns come back around in the storyline somehow, maybe?
  21. Personally, I'm glad that Fitzroy didn't take the job. Phelps may be irascible, but he is competent, and Fitzroy's got a long way to go. If Eliza makes a go of her own agency, at least she'll have a group of detectives she can contract work to on the cases. Did the concept of paid overtime even exist in the 1880s?
  22. Ooh, no, I don't know about that. Characters should never let the TV gods know when they're traveling or when they're expected home. Big setup for a disaster along the way, and Station 51 might have to respond all the way to Ohio or someplace. When everyone's locker has their name taped to the front, and Cruz and Sylvie have been working together for years now? Somebody isn't paying attention, and I think it's the writers. Well, they do have that room full of invisible administration staff that we never saw after the first two seasons. But they're only 8-5 so that's not even a real solution. I can't believe they dragged/carried that mother out of the alley after she had taken a two story jump. I guess spinal immobilization is not a critical factor anymore.
  23. On a side note, I was mildly amused when Addison, a hologram, covered her head and ducked during the cave-in.
  24. Maybe from the Burger King that fell down the sinkhole?
  25. I cannot fathom making $1.25 million per episode. Kelly could buy her own ranch in one season.
