  1. I love expository preaching when it is done well, and I abhor the canned "sermon series" approach delivered by a less prepared preacher using a script. Good expository preaching is like sitting in an engaging college lecture. Jeremy seems to be doing the reading necessary, but he needs training in rhetoric. I haven't looked at the courses in the program in which he is enrolled, but hopefully that is covered in the curriculum. What is the benefit of training in ministry if it does not take delivery of the message into account?
  2. I have 20 years experience teaching college and high school writing, so I am a pro at trying to figure out what young people mean from poor writing. My guess would be that Joy thinks it is awesome that the person posting the question wants to be healthy and not relapse into anorexia. Joy has probably never been taught about considering her audience, tone, or word choice.
  3. I like Tozer, as a writer and as a name. I teach in an urban high school and also worked in a child care center recently, so I'm fairly immune to unusual names. I'm Wesleyan myself, so we could always use Wesley as a name, but I don't think he would fit their theological bent. One of the founders of my denomination was a man named Phineas Bresee, and one of our pioneering missionaries to Swaziland was Harmon Schmelzenbach. When you grow up hearing those names in church, Spurgeon doesn't sound too bad. I remember hearing revival services preached by a man named Rankin Roach, too.
  4. My kids are constantly moving my shoes and playing with them. I find shoes in weird places all of the time.
  5. There are some babies who come with all the extras you'd need to set up a NICU styled scene in your house. It's downright disgusting My babies all spent time in the NICU, and my third came home with an oxygen condenser, portable tanks of O2 for travel, a nasal cannula, ng feeding tube, a Kangaroo pump for timed feedings, and a pulse oximeter. The other kids were 4 and 2 at the time, and they were always trying to find ways to play with their dolls that mimicked their baby sister's care. They would use pieces of yarn taped to the dolls faces doe the "tubes". I had to check her tube placement using a syringe and ph paper before feedings, so they would imitate that, too. Our 4th baby also had a feeding tube, although she didn't require the other equipment. She was cleared to start daycare while she still had the ng tune, and had to do several months of therapy through Early Intervention and speech pathology to learn to swallow without aspiration. I worked at the daycare office, so I took care of all of her feedings, because the teachers were very uncomfortable with the tube feeding. I think NICU dolls are a great idea, and it is sad that people use them for other purposes. They could help families and caregivers in those situations overcome the fear that comes from unfamiliarity. I think it could also inspire children to become future neonatologists or NICU nurses, etc.
  6. Yep, I have two children that would go in the red section of this chart, my first and third babies.
  7. Has anyone else ever wondered about how much more attention this couple gets than the rest of the Duggar cast? If Jill and Derick are using social media for income, traffic driven by hatred and disgust is still just another click, right? I don't follow any of these people on other platforms, but on this forum, their board is the most active by far.
  8. I think it is funny that over on the Dillard thread some people think Evangelicals are too stupid to know that Christmas is not actually the date Jesus was born, and over here the Vuolos are being criticized for not being in church on Christmas day. As an Evangelical myself, I can say that I have never been in a church that had services on Christmas day unless it was on a Sunday, and some have even cancelled Sunday services if that day was Christmas. Christmas Eve service is usually singing, candle lighting, and maybe a short homily or some readings. Christmas day is seen as a family holiday. I've celebrated with family as early as Black Friday and as late as January 6, depending on availability and travel schedules.
  9. I think Joy looks better in the shirt than the model. At least she isn't hiding her hands or pulling down the bottom. It's not my taste, but it isn't terrible. I still don't get the appeal of sweaters with cut-outs, but they are still popular.
  10. I wonder if Jeremy's long term goal might be to get a Doctorate of Divinity and teach in a seminary. It would suit his speaking style, theological interests, and perceived desire to be seen as intellectual and upper class.
  11. I lived with three women in college whi never cut their hair, for religious reasons. One had hair literally to her feet. She would air dry it by flipping it back and forth for around five minutes. I've had waist length hair a few times myself, and I do not blow dry it. I just flip it up over my pillow so I'm not laying on top if it as I sleep. I only spend 5-10 minutes on my hair in the morning, and I only wash the roots and condition the ends. Shampoo is more for cleaning the scalp and the hair closest to it than for the whole shaft, which would get dried out by using ahampoo.
  12. The foster care system in WV is overwhelmed due to the opioid epidemic, which has bit there hardest, if you go by overdose death statistics. I saw a statistic that in one country, 80% of grandparents are raising their grandchildren. No way the system is going to do anything about families like the Rodriguez family.
  13. I can confirm that in many southern communities, it is common the refer to parents as Mommy and Daddy even as adult children. I've known people who are grandparents themselves who still refer to their parents in that way.
  14. I thought the same. Her whole outfit looks like Plain/ Anabaptist garb to me.
  15. I have an inherited family trait like this. My dad, one sister, and I all have one "squinty" eye. It's most obvious when we smile.
  16. Last week my kids wanted a snack, so I put Nutella on Saltines. They thought I was a genius chef and that I should share this recipe with my coworkers. I should start a food blog.
  17. He was convicted of murdering three full term infants post birth and causing the death of a woman by perforating her bowels with filthy equipment. According to the testimony of his staff, he probably killed dozens more infants after they were born, but the remains that they found in his clinic were too decomposed to determine if they were born alive. He kept "trophies" such as severed feet in jars. If he weren't operating out of a so-called abortion clinic, few would dispute that he was a serial killer. I'm a bit surprised they went to see the movie. It is rated PG-13 and is not overtly Christian. Although some characters are Christian, it does not promote belief in God or a salvation experience. The movie even highlights the fact that the prosecutors in charge of the case were pro choice.
  18. I'm from another town in the same county. I have family there who work in Ripley. I'll let them know to keep an eye out for the Rodriguez bus.
  19. According to Wikipedia, " The covers of the New Testaments distributed by Gideons are color-coded based on which groups they are meant for: Orange: given in sidewalk distribution[10] Green: for college/university students Red: for in-school distribution to Middle/High school students Digital Camouflage/Desert Camouflage: for the military[10] Dark blue: printed in a language other than English[10] White: for medical professionals Light blue: for distribution by the Auxiliary only[10] Brown: for facilities distributions, (for witnessing in prisons and jails by Gideons)[10] Burgundy: personal worker's testaments (for individual witnessing by Gideons)[10] Periwinkle: personal worker's testaments (for individual witnessing by the Auxiliary)" This sounds accurate to what I remember from hearing a Gideon speaker at church. I used to work with a secular nonprofit that provides books for prison populations, and the Bible was our #1 request. We had lots of donated Gideon Bibles, so even if the person who it is handed to on the street doesn't want it, it could still get to someone who does. If a person doesn't want to take one, they can just refuse or ignore her.
  20. They look like the Gideon's New Testament, which usually also includes the book of Psalms. They usually have different colors for different demographic groups, but I can't remember which colors are for which groups. The boxes in the background are labeled New Testament, ESV.
  21. If Mason has an actual milk allergy, not an intolerance, I can see that as being a big deal. From the anaphylactic allergy groups I've been in, many have said that milk was harder to avoid than peanuts and nuts. I admire her tenacity in getting back to breastfeeding, as well. I had to exclusively pump for 4-5 months with each of my youngest two babies before they were able to nurse, and it is a lot of work and very time consuming. I know "Fed is best" is the anti-mom-shaming mantra regarding infant feeding, but considering the very low rate of breastfeeding in the US, I always want to give credit to the mom's who do breastfeed, especially when they had extra obstacles.
  22. There have been several men's Christian groups over the past few decades: Promise Keepers, Men's Frat, and others are generally designed to encourage men to take leadership roles in their churches, homes, and communities. Courageous was also the name of a Christian movie released a few years ago about men stepping up to be better fathers and husbands. In my experience, none of these had anything to do with gay conversion. This group could be different, but the website sounds similar to me.
  23. Are we sure he moved the business? He's the owner, but I'm sure he has employees. At this point, he could have other people running the day-to-day operations.
  24. Some babies really need the mittens to prevent scratching. I've known some who had eczema who would literally scratch themselves bloody the second they got the mittens off. I wonder if Felicity gave herself a bad scratch once already, and the mittens are staying for a while because of it.
  25. I showed there pictures to my three older children, ages 7, 5, and 3. They all liked Jessa the best. They liked her face and they thought her house looked "fancy", I think because of the curtain in the background
