  1. I, too, would love to see Pops and Ruby together. Pops and Ruby drama would be GOOOOOOOD! :P As for why Bow can't do dinner on December 25 - maybe that's when they go to HER family's house (do we know anything about her parents, other than the fact that her dad's white and her mom's black?)? Or perhaps she could be on call (though she's probably senior enough that she can take December 25 off)?
  2. I also want to see more of Ruby. She's kind of a female Archie Bunker! Also liked early 80s "video" of young Dre. Adorable kid!
  3. Lazy today, so I'm partially cooking. Bought spinach and feta stuffed chicken from the supermarket and will be roasting that with onions and veggies. Side? Buckwheat grains (yeah, I'm experimenting). Tomorrow, I'm going to be baking eggs (usually, I add some milk, spinach, dried herbs and maybe cherry tomatoes and top it with some grated Parmesan).
  4. Speaking of cola, I was at a food/wine convention recently and tried a drink called MerloCola (yeah, exactly what it is. Merlot + cola). The first sip was good, but afterwards....GROSSSSS!!! Plus something like this promotes underage drinking.
  5. Mmmm...crusty bread.....cheese.........wine.....heaven.....
  6. Noted in another thread, but I recently tried chocolate hummus at a holiday vendor market and liked it, so I purchased a tub. Used it for chicken the last night and let's just say that I'll probably go back to more "traditional" hummus flavours. I also tried game meat burgers at a new Toronto area burger place (had camel and kangaroo along with more "normal" patties like lentil and fish (tuna, to be exact). It was interesting, but in a good way. I liked the camel (and blogged about it, too).
  7. LOL...I prefer coffee of some sort. I'm not that big a fan of rice, either (ate it too much growing up). I make quinoa at least once a week, and recently started making cauliflower "rice" (chop cauliflower into smaller pieces, throw it into the food processor for five or six pulses and then cook it with a bit of broth and black pepper if you want something plainer. Add other spices/herbs if you want to doctor it up a bit) as a side. I also like spelt and farro.
  8. This video gave me the idea. What do YOU think they'd be doing? Thomas would be out of the closet, but still evil, of course. And Rose would be partying with Miley. Edith probably wouldn't be too different - single mom/journalist.
  9. Who has this? I just purchased it on iTunes and really like the style/sound. Lots of traditional, a capella and classical style Christmas carols featuring the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Julian Ovendon (Blake). Elizabeth McGovern also has a few tracks, though her more pop music style seems out of place on the album of very old school style performances. I don't think the sound is for everyone, though. I mean, some Christmas/holiday songs are meant to sound more "classical" (sorry, but a jazzed up version of Silent Night just doesn't work for me) while others are more contemporary (so yes, White Christmas or Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas don't work opera style. I was at an event and heard an opera singer sing the latter. Sorry, lady, you have a gorgeous voice, but Judy Garland YOU ARE NOT!).
  10. Store-bought. Or more accurately, purchased at an artisan holiday market/show. The vendor was from a catering company a couple of hours away from my city. To make the chicken, I liberally spread hummus on each side of chicken breast and bake it at 375 F for 45 minutes. Typically, I use roasted red pepper or "regular" hummus, but tonight, I tried the catering company's chocolate hummus (YES, CHOCOLATE) thinking that it would be a little like mole sauce or the chocolate balsamic chicken I made a couple of weeks ago. Ummmmm, NO. Going back to the regular or pepper. Interestingly, I actually LIKED the chocolate hummus when I tried it at the market. That's why I bought it! Tomorrow, I'm going to try making homemade polenta (okay, not exactly homemade, since I am NOT grinding my own cornmeal) to go with my beef stew.
  11. Falafels and hummus (actually, chickpeas done any way) Brie, especially with tomatoes and avocado on ciabatta or baguette, lightly toasted Caprese salad Guacamole Grilled cheese (REAL cheese, please, not the kind wrapped in plastic) with tomato soup Bolognese sauce over rice (childhood memories!). These days, I also do this over quinoa and often make it with turkey rather than beef Macaroni and cheese (again, real cheese, not powder) Cookies, especially sugar and chocolate chip, preferably chewy Brownies/blondies (especially fresh out of the oven and topped with vanilla ice cream) Tofu Parmesan (basically baked tofu with tomato sauce, Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses) Strawberries dipped in chocolate Ice cream: strawberry, chocolate chip and cookies and cream Maple anything (I'm known to put maple syrup in my coffee - and I don't typically sweeten coffee) Shakshouka (more and more brunch places here in Toronto are serving this now) Green onion pancakes
  12. Roasted hummus crusted chicken breast, butternut squash and apples. Probably just going to heat up some frozen veggies as a side.
  13. Yes. That's why they have extra thick straws.
  14. Amaretti! I also like sugar cookies and good ol' chocolate chip. ETA: Do macarons (NOT macaroons as much) count as cookies? Whoopie pies? A local cupcake shop recently started selling cookies - both regular and sandwich. They're best when you stick it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds because it goes from crunchy to more chewy. And the filling in the sandwich cookies soften just enough that they ooze out... :) MMMMMMMM!!!
  15. Do I have to turn in my "Asian card" because I, too, find bubble tea vile?
  16. I never really "got" nail art. Always found it tacky! I also have trouble wearing nail polish that isn't a nude or neutral (darker browns and brown-based reds or pinks) unless it's on my feet. Oh, and "shower curtain" earrings (i.e. big hoop earrings - that's what the head at my school called them when I was there back in the 90s)! Can't do that, either. I think it's those years at the school. As for clothing: shoulder pads on blazers and printed pants (sorry, not ready for that condo in Florida yet).
  17. The more I watch this show, the more I see Dre being portrayed as the stereotypical "dumb dad/husband" that I see in commercials all the time. Kind of tired of that.
  18. Not my disaster, but someone I know once mistakenly put vanilla yogurt in the curry rather than plain. Let's just say that it tasted...weird.
  19. Wedding packages include tip/gratuities and anything outside of the packages ended up more expensive based on a la carte menus (whether it was food stations, buffet or sitdown). The package included alcohol, hors d'oeuvres and the midnight table (we opted for dessert only).
  20. My husband is Jewish and I'm "technically" Catholic but was educated Anglican (Episcopalian). My DH said that we "had" to have a sit-down dinner because that's what his family expects (I'm Chinese and kind of gets what he's trying to say)! We married at a yacht club and our package included hors d'oeuvres post-ceremony and a three course meal (paid extra to have a fish option in addition to meat and vegetarian) and we also added a dessert table. Opted NOT to have a Chinese banquet - most people in my generation opt not to, anyway. If I had to choose, I would have gone with food stations/cocktail supper. The venue didn't have that option if we wanted grats to be included.
  21. Another thing I don't like: the savoury soy milk that some Shanghainese or Taiwanese style restaurants serve. They tend to have yaotiu (savoury fried dough, kind of like churros) slices floating in them as well as chili oil. Ummmm.... WHY?
  22. Had a lazy day today, so I made ummmm..... "Mexitalruvian Pilaf" (I think I just made up the name). Shredded grilled chicken, quinoa, spinach (I used frozen tonight), a bit of shredded Asiago and Romano cheeses and black bean salsa tossed together and topped with a bit of guacamole.
  23. Thanks, @Athena! @romanticidiot, in North America, East Asian/Asian refers to Chinese/Japanese/Korean while Southeast Asian = Thai Filipino, etc... Indians/Sri Lankans/Pakistani/etc... are South Asian. I don't know about the US, but in Canada, South Asians have a separate check box in the census. For some reason, they're all grouped into one while East Asians are furthur subcategorized (e.g. I might check off "Chinese" in the forms rather than just Asian/East Asian).
  24. Instead of wadder (which is how most people in the US and Canada seem to pronounce "water"). Did they make him say to-MAH-toe instead of to-MAY-toe (or rather, tuh-MAY-do)?
