I knew it was Lottie when Paul said the top layer was tasteless. If it tasted amazing she might have made it. She realized she was out standing there in front of them. You could see it in her face for an instant. I'm sad to lose her. She was a fun contestant and had some good ideas, but she seems to be in a good place. Hopefully she can go back to waving at her grandparents and baking for them. Someone called quiche last week. I don't associate quiche with any particular decade, but I seem to remember party sized quiches being around then. I've never seen a finger donut. It looked like a hot dog to me, especially with the red jam squiggle. I do remember Viennetta ice cream cakes. My family would have them for special occasions in the 80s. I'm happy for Hermine. I would absolutely have eaten her quiches. And her ice cream cake looked modest but it was beautiful and perfect, which is amazing in that heat. If they have fans running I would think they could put some ice trays in front to cool things a bit.

I thought they got as much laughter out of this as it was possible to get. Some of it was gallows humor, but the situation is what it is. Like everyone said, Glenn really got to me. Some of the best moments were little things. Garrett's shower curtain shield. Brett putting one can of franks-n-beans on the shelf and the customer in front of him taking it off as he reached down for another. Also, Brett's long hair in the meeting scene. Mateo not only enjoying dismembering the bears, but answering Amy with two snip sounds of his scissors. I noticed Dina's mask was a bird print. And Glenn's had a little embroidered bear(?) on it that Jerusha must have made. They were small but nice touches.

Whenever we talk about pronunciation on this show the word that always comes to mind is "churro."

Some Japanese baked good examples: Dorayaki - filled pancakes Daifuku - sweet bean filled mochi Anpan - stuffed roll Melon pan - roll with a sweet top crust Japanese cheesecake Milk bread I just had a jello salad flashback.

I agree this wasn't quite what I was expecting from a Japanese challenge. Japan has unique styles of white bread, filled rolls, filled mochi, cheesecake, custards, and cookies. This was a pretty shallow exploration themed around Instagram-able items. I think there was an India themed challenge a few seasons ago that was also lacking in this way. I understand that they want to do something achievable for home bakers, but then maybe this is the wrong theme. The steamed buns and the kawaii cakes were certainly cute. I loved that Peter put a little black sheep in his flock. I did start to think that the colors were a little too artificial looking. I did think Laura would be leaving until I saw her finished upside down pineapple and it was so charming. I'm sorry to see Mark go because as with all of them he seems like a nice guy. Good luck to him. There is Japanese curry that is completely different from other forms like Indian or Thai. It's very sweet tasting and not spicy. Gherkins are great.

I've been watching this slowly. It was fine, but things never completely gelled for me. It feels like this could have used some 'case of the week' episodes to establish ground rules, and saved demon babies for season two (or never). I had trouble connecting to the main characters. The actors weren't bad, it's just that what was happening felt forced a lot of the time. Victoria, Hastings and Yen were interesting and entertaining. Robert Wisdom kept making me think of Supernatural. The effects were good for what this was, the set design was good, and clearly effort went into it. It just lacked a spark. I presume that means she's Lilith.

I haven't seen pasties in the U.S. In my area a meat pie was a bierock.
-
I think they made clangers one year too. All the pasties looked good, and I was glad this improved over last week's brownie debacle. Peter's fish were quite nice looking. I liked his cereal box stencil. And my vocabulary word for this week was kedgeree. The eclairs were all over the place. I'm very recipe dependent, even for things I've made a dozen times, so I felt bad for them not having the details. I noticed Prue broke bits off some of the cages. She was holding a green leaf in one shot, and I noticed later Dave's pastry was missing a section. I think they did try bits, but apparently didn't mention it. That said, it was a lot of pastry to not count for much. It was a bit like the time that they did the chocolate domes that they poured hot ... cream? chocolate? over to reveal what was inside. Showy, but not really core GBBO material. Something about the editing made me think Laura was in the running for star baker. They lingered a bit on her pasties even though they weren't particularly decorated. I would have thought Peter had the edge, especially since he wove his dome. I'm not surprised it was a Linda but I'm sorry to see her go. She has a warm presence, and she did some nice things on the show. Gypsy tart was another new one to me. It sounds like it's part of the way to dulce de leche.

I feel a small need to defend U.S. chocolate. It's not all Hershey, though I know it's the most widespread. There are other brands like Guittard, Alter Eco, and Lake Champlain which taste like chocolate.
-
I assume. Also, raw flour can contain E.coli.
-
Yeah, that was odd. White chocolate is high fat and shouldn't really emulsify in water. Melting wafers have extra oil to dilute them and make them smooth. I wonder if there was too much liquid in the cake because of that. In retrospect I think Peter had the best idea - just put white chocolate chunks in.
-
I also agree. Cakey brownies are...cake. I was sad to see everyone psych themselves out on the brownie challenge. It made for a bit of a downer episode. I was also sad to see Sura go, though I knew the moment we saw the raw cake that it was coming. Plastic knives are best for cutting brownies. I don't know why, but I was told about it, tried it, and it's true. I'm glad Lottie is still in, and like other posters above I was happy for Linda's success in the past two episodes. In the first episode I was a little afraid that she was going to be overwhelmed by the competition but she's really come back. Here's a clip from the babka episode of Seinfeld. Also, Binging with Babish had chocolate and cinnamon babka in a Seinfeld themed video. Is Matt narrating the sketch overviews with Noel? If so, his voice sounds completely different than when he's talking with the bakers. He sounds a bit like David Attenborough narrating a baking documentary.

I really enjoyed this one; I feel like the different personalities are starting to gel into an interesting whole. Most of them did pretty well, too, which makes it feel more upbeat. It was sweet to see Marc's daughters come running out. I'm glad their families were included in this, because being separated in this mess would have been very hard. The soda breads mostly looked good, though as soon as Rowan said it I knew polenta wasn't going to be a good addition. If he'd partially cooked it, maybe it would have taken the edge off the texture. Lottie's back and forth with Paul over blueberries was a good laugh. It was nice that Mak gave Linda his honey to make honey butter. Those bagels just looked like Playdoh. Even in some of the showstoppers the color was a bit garish. I prefer the ones that have the natural colorants, even if they are duller. I am enjoying Matt's newbie comments, like asking how much flavor does bread really need. It makes the show feel a bit more grounded to have an outside perspective.

I liked Mak for the short time we had with him. I thought the place setting was a better (and less horrifying) showstopper challenge concept than the busts, and more in keeping with what they’ve done in the past. My favorite was Marc’s toast, plate, and tea set, though the taco rack and salsa dish did look good. I thought the silver and blue tea set also looked nice. It was news to me that some Florentines have dried fruit pieces. I feel like that’s at odds with the texture, but then I’m not a big dried fruit fan. The plain almond kind are lovely. Matt got a laugh from me during the waistcoat conversation when he said with wonder, “Paul! This is what posh people talk about!” I was thrown when Noel’s narration called Dave’s shiba inu a Japanese hunting dog. I have trouble picturing a doge hunting. ETA: apparently birds and rabbits. Me too. It looked like a white spider to me at first. I think the 'beads' of her necklace were leather ties that were pointing off at different angles.

Yeah...it's bad. I haven't tried the Peacock streaming service. I wonder if it's on there, and if the cuts are better.

Glad to see this today on Netflix (with the Boris Johnson parody. And I also had Netflix jumped away to another episode in the middle of the judging, and I had to fast forward through the episode again to see the ending.) I had completely forgotten that Sandi wasn't going to be in it and was thrown by Matt's appearance. I still think of Noel as new. Looking at Matt's imdb page I recognize him as a guest star on various things, but I haven't seen his primary shows. Not sure what to think of him yet, but he did have one of the accidentally funniest moments when he ate one of Sura's candy fruits. Matt: What's the stem made of? Sura: You're not supposed to eat the stem. Matt: Well I know that now. I can't imagine chewing a whole clove! The Battenburgs were pretty. Bubble gum almost never works for the judges so I wasn't surprised at their reaction there. Lottie's cake made to look like a candy was clever, and I would personally be interested in trying a pistachio marzipan. The chocolate and orange one was pretty. I've never seen whipped cream on a pineapple upside down cake, or another cherry on top. To me part of the point is to show the pretty baked pineapple and cherry. I agree with everyone else - the bust challenge was doomed from the beginning. I'm surprised they didn't comment negatively on the single color or stylized color cakes, but then stylized did seem to work better. The skull cake mold was a really clever concept. At least the proportions were already taken care of. Looking forward to more.

I had seen episodes of Frasier occasionally in syndication, and recently decided to watch the whole series. It did have its low spots but it's impressive how high the overall quality stayed. It's amazing that there are still so many laugh out loud moments after twenty years. The writers had an incredible knack for setting up something early in an episode and then paying it off later. The lamp in the seal episode killed me every time someone clapped.

In Memoriam: Entertainment Industry Celebrity Deaths
MisterGlass replied to Kromm's topic in Everything Else TV
RIP RBG, and best wishes to her family. Heaven help us. -
The delay is going to be true of so many things that it seems weird as a reason. Is it cheaper to develop a new scripted show from scratch than to wait on something that at least had interest? Of course maybe it will be all reality filler as @paigow suggested. Maybe 2021 will be a good year to catch up on my reading.
-
Would watch. Whenever and however it happens, I hope they can address the change with dignity. There are Disney properties that haven't managed that.

Not sure of the level of overlap between Agent Carter and Agents of SHIELD viewers, but for those interested, Sousa's story got a coda on Agents of SHIELD in its final season.

S02.E10: The End of Something
MisterGlass replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Umbrella Academy
The power is from Vanya. She controls energy waves in the form of sound, and the violin was a conduit. Channeling through the violin seemed to keep her from boiling over when she was first rediscovering her power. As far as Reginald giving her the violin, it could be seen as the only act of affection he gave her. He seemed touched in the moment, though it's hard to say if it was because of the memory of his wife, affection for Vanya, or guilt for taking her powers. Or all three. -
I guess technically we don't need spoiler tags. With single-thread shows I sometimes start with them. Spoilers ahead! There were three submarines at the Inland at the Process Building that were out of range of the pulse. Gloria convinced Ariel to send them to the Offshore without Andre's permission. Gloria 🙄 And Marco.
