  1. OPB aired the show tonight (Friday July 1, at 9pm Pacific) I hope they keep the show on Friday as Sundays are already too full of "good stuff" -- we need good stuff spread through the rest of the week (I wish Masterpiece Mystery was still on Thursdays, sigh) First episode was good. Nothing weird (Madeira cake, aka pound cake, and black forest gateau) but the first elimination was pretty obvious, and no complaints from me. There seemed to be less time dedicated to the critiques so I'm wondering if yet again we're going to see edited episodes (I'm sick of this, plus my local station doesn't broadcast in widescreen format yet so I see everything chopped off at the edges)
  2. You need to buy the DVDs to see the FULL program: Amazon etc almost always show the American cut versions (ie, as shown on PBS with the cuts). Re Morse giving Jakes the savings bonds: he was acknowledging why Jakes was "suddenly" getting married (ie girlfriend in the pudding club) and was offering some support for the upcoming child... I thought it showed a very caring response and in keeping with Morse's character (money vs emotion)
  3. Vivian's book is pre-order status on Amazon: Deep Run Roots: Stories and Recipes from My Corner of the South Hardcover – October 4, 2016 https://www.amazon.com/Deep-Run-Roots-Stories-Recipes/dp/0316381101/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466725497&sr=8-1&keywords=vivian+howard
  4. I just recently re-watched the Lewis series and my brain is niggling me that there is some Bleinheim Vale reference. I don't think it was closure to the Endeavour story however. I'm so glad Endeavour is back but I think like all of these episodes, RIDE will stand watching again (and again) in order to pick up on all the subtleties that seem to be part of the fabric. I think that's what makes this such a quality program: that even when you know the ending, there's still so much to glean from re-watching (ESPECIALLY if you are familiar with the original Morse, and Lewis) I also spotted the connection from the first series with Prime Suspect!
  5. Hmm, I just assumed there were more children but they were not focused on. I can't imagine Tom Lea keeping Kizzy around if she wasn't producing "more stock" for him, no matter how much he liked her.
  6. My current hot buttons? Reign vs rein. I know horses and knowledge of their saddlery is no longer common knowledge but people talking about reigning in something (vs the correct rein in) is beyond cringe worthy for me. And related: to coronate vs to crown -- this one always has me laughing in despair: fortunately it doesn't crop up overly often.....
  7. Episode "Crossing the Line" Got a thrill when I realized that Jean's manfriend was none other than Tom Burlinson (The Man from Snowy River). He's aged well!! I really like this show a lot. It's well done, appropriately nostalgic for an oldie like me (born 1955) yet not overly brain-taxing while not being dummed down. I'm really surprised more people aren't commenting (maybe because it's perfect?)
  8. Woo Hoo! Sam's gone despite our high expectation that there would be 4 in the final!! I really liked Kini and Dom's looks this week. With Ken's, I sort of wished he'd cut apart his Mood fabric and replaced the shiny bits with his digital pattern: a lot of work but it would have been a more cohesive look. ps re the apology: not sure why they chose to cut out so much of what must have gone on: the apology as presented was really not an apology and pretty lame.
  9. I'm glad there was a discussion about what avant garde was wrt the designer. I agree that for Dom, that was very avant garde. Ditto for Emily. I definitely think AG means different things to different people, ESPECIALLY when coupled with "wearable".... Sam really did looked hurt by Ken's comments: maybe his first real dose of reality?
  10. The point of my earlier comment is that "we're" not talking about an American region when "we" talk about mid-atlantic -- we're saying the accent is not quite American, not quite English -- it's in the middle. I don't think the use of the term "mid-atlantic" has anything whatsoever to do with any perceived bias... Frankly I don't let accents get in the way anymore -- ever since Jean Luc Picard used a very British Accent on STNG it's obvious we have to suspend disbelief :) (PS I adore Patrick Stewart, nothing against him but the producers obviously condescended to believe Americans wouldn't know a real french accent if they tripped over it so let's just use something not American)
  11. Mid Atlantic, as in the middle of the Atlantic. And mid atlantic would suggest "not American, not English but somewhere in the middle" ..... Transatlantic is an ok substitute I guess.
  12. Yep, definitely a multi-tissue episode. But I'm always prepared with this show :) However, I'm going to be a bit unpopular here by suggesting this show is starting to get all Hollywood on us in always having happy endings (yeah, I know John died but there's his heartless boss with a wad of cash for the kid at the funeral -- really? I think not very realistic...) I think back to Series 1 and the episode of the 3 kids sent to Australia and their new life and the postscript telling us all was not a happy ending for them -- so sad but so much more aligned to reality. I felt the same thing with the thalidomide baby: father's reaction got turned around and they become a loving family...I would have liked to have seen or been told the reality of that % outcome. Always having happy endings takes me out of the show a little unfortunately: this is about poor people in a very poor area of London: their lives were hard and rarely happy as we'd think of happy. Just my opinion of course.
  13. I suspect because he's on retainer to the Police and other local authorities that they pick up at least some of the cost for the house and housekeeping services. Even if they don't, he needs someone to look after his house so he would be paying her himself. I get the impression that money isn't an issue whichever way. And we don't know how long he was gone anyway.
  14. Best episode of this season so far. Battle scene terrific (I remembered there was going to be a chain...) Am I the only person irritated beyond irritation at the # of ad breaks History Channel inserts?
  15. FOH, or host, maitre d' etc RARELY serve the food in restaurants: that is normally done by the wait staff. Only in RW do they seem to serve the food because they are supposed to describe the food and tell who made what. So I don't care what they wear only that they seat me in a timely fashion and not at the worst table in the restaurant. I care much more about where waiters fingers are on my plates and glassware!
  16. I think Hugh Bonneville is the dog person --- his reaction to Tia was not acted!! A true dog person can't be hidden or acted IMO. And that's what made the puppy scene such heart grabber and eye dampener.
  17. I agree with you about that milestone in Daisy's life. However, when I was at school in the UK in the early 70s the only kids who took "Matriculation" were the ones aiming for higher education: you didn't sit matric if you didn't intend "going on". I don't know how historically that relates to the 1920s but I bet it was similar. Oh and absolutely true about University etc. In fact even in the 70s at my grammar school (yep they were still around) very few people were planning on a University education: it wasn't required for most jobs and having a degree hadn't become an everyman "basic" thing as it is in the US. Until coming to the US in 1984, not having a degree had never been a barrier for me in getting a job or having a valuable career.
  18. Am I the only one who translated "District" to "District 9" (the movie) and wondered why they weren't serving a bunch of Prawn (aka shrimp) dishes?
  19. My 2c worth (ha!) 1. 6d to folks in the village would be significant but not unaffordable. (conversion to today's is 6d=$3.26) 2. 2x6d=1 shilling. 20 shillings=1 pound sterling 3. Making 10-30 pounds sterling for the day of tours would be considered a significant amount of money even to the Crawleys. 4. Not knowing about the house I found a little belief-suspending but not knowing the subjects/value isn't. Still it made for amusing watching and served to show that increasing education of the "masses" was happening. Daisy is sitting Matric which would give her an opening to further education (polytechnic or university). The local school is just where the matric will be administered/invigilated. With the utmost respect, Enough of the Mary/Edith -- please. Enough of the Edith/Drewes -- please. So much speculation, so much repeating I really want to read your posts but don't want to keep reading the same rehashes in each episode thread :) BTW, if you don't want to wait, just buy the DVD from Amazon: it's available (and cheaper than PBS) :)
  20. Mentioning CHAD because noone else has :) Can't remember what he made, but I like the guy. Seems to be a good solid performer. I like pretty much everyone else but Phillip has to go. His skill needs to catch up with his ego and keep growing to catch up with his mouth....
  21. I don't understand this hate from the judges about using frozen food: if the fresh corn was crap, why didn't Grayson pick up a few bags of frozen corn? I LOVE FROZEN CORN and PETITE POIS. Many times frozen food is much better than so called fresh food that was picked 30 days ago.... Unless I can go into the backyard and pick the food fresh, I don't trust "fresh" --- and people who think the food at farmers markets is fresh, do your research! Personally chorizo and corn hash just sounds awful to me: there's no absorbing factor like potato or ?? so of course it's going to be incredibly oily. And it's obvious they used fresh chorizo vs spanish dry chorizo so hence the oil. Just a really bad choice.
  22. I've never seen the musical and agree that the Weinsteins are pushing their agenda a bit too hard but have you ever seen the movie? It is a truly lovely movie. Like most movies it stretches and distorts the truth but the end result is 2 hours worth watching.
  23. Books these days are often published with 2 sets of measurements. I have a Mary Berry book from the 70s that has imperial and metric measurements in it AND the book was bought in the UK in the 70s! And anyway, everyone these days really should have a digital scale in their kitchen that converts between the two systems -- they are relatively cheap and VERY handy.
  24. Ohhhhhhh, thanks for making that connection: hadn't realized it was another promotional oppty for the Weinsteins. I should have guessed as much. At least we don't have the gorgeous, beautiful, Georgina to deal with at the same time...
