I read from the show runner that the vow of silence in DC started out as voluntary. He compared it to the burqa where some women wore it voluntarily Nd then everyone else was forced to wear it. I also wondered if the vow of silence was necessary since the Handmaids are closer to powerful people and could pick up information.

My mom had a strong aversion to butter so she would make the worst cheese sandwiches in the toaster oven and then send them cold for my lunch. I think that Valjean dies of a broken heart from losing Cosette. In the book he is fiercely devoted to her and never wants to lose her.

Sadly, that is exactly how it plays out in the novel.
