I think someone said Toby is in computer work of some kind but they were always vague. He must work at home since he seems to always have time off. Maybe they will hone in more on him as the baby story line heats up. I hated (especially working in an orthopedic office) seeing Kevin act the way he did with his brace etc and of course taking the pills. It is a current issue though and maybe they wanted to use it to talk about it in a forum some will relate too more than an ad or MD telling them. I'm glad Rebecca was tough to her Mom, Randall was around for 10 years and 3 basketballs later, she knows what she is doing. My kids are biracial and they told me once that when you let something go, you are complicit and it hurts and it makes the person think they can still act that way. They might not change but they will in front of you or not see you. You need to have firm boundaries and there is no excuse for emotionally abusing someone. Re "your goal dress" to Kate, geez, thanks Gram. : /

I remember when my biracial son was Randall's age, a little younger, a white woman in my playgroup said as my son made a shot with a nerf basketball, "you better keep that up so you can get a basketball scholarship" I said, I'd rather he used his brain" which made her look quizzical, and then commented I hoped her son also played well. She was confused why. People say the dumbest things.

Every time they said, "I need you to itch me" I remembered my mom saying, "You scratch an itch" ; )

Thanks, I missed that. Yes men in her life probably weren't like Randall and she probably felt a bond with Beth and then it broke. The rollercoaster ride will continue. Poor Randall, she doesn't need to bond over bad stuff they share, he has to build on good things too.

I agree, they wont want her to gain much but it will be an issue. She also has issues still pending from her childhood and with raging hormones, I"m sure there will be weight centered issues and maybe issues with delivery. Sometimes other medical issues surface with pregnancy

Was the hair cutting just because of Randall saying something? He does seem to empty himself on her every time he speaks. I had a father I didn't know, I had a nervous breakdown, two really....can we space this out? lol Hair seems nice in next episode so I guess it is discussed and remedied.

6 weeks along. Unless I heard wrong. They can tell earlier now. If she obscessed with getting in shape now for the baby, that's fine, but the weight gain, etc. is either to hide she isn't losing or to have her lose and wear some padding and then later, she's thinner....or maybe that is too much thought on it.

I just said that but would it be too much? lol

I think once Jack is officially gone, although he's gone from the beginning, the characters will become more dimensional. I think that big gaps in their lives which would lead to them talking about Jack's death and how they lost things in the fire or any emotionally disturbing or even nice events, are blurred through the lens of "what killed Jack?" Just the fact that the fire or losing things isn't mentioned, Mom's marriage, college, etc. and they are older, is all because if they show too much, they have to fill in more gaps. So the characters to me, are sometimes immature, sometimes, based on the kids we see, there isn't "I'm an adult now, I'm in my 30's", it's I'm emotionally bruised, hate my mother, can't have a relationship, etc. It's like they go from teens to 30-something because they can't show us any in between. I hope for more growth later in the season.

I agree, it sounds awful. She hasn't worked out her own issues, this will just add to them. The emotional roller coaster, the added dangers of being heavy and the toll pregnancy takes. It also seems like a way to still make her weight an issue but "she is pregnant" so she isn't losing weight, just gaining. Maybe if she is losing they'll have her wear something and then show her thinner later, but I just have a bad feeling about it. Kind of contrived and done before. This Is Us has been fresh and I hope it stays that way.

I met Paul Newman years ago at a hospital. He was talking to a doctor, I was walking down the hall in the basement where some doctors were and a pharmacy, and I just nodded to him and he nodded back. i thought he looked so handsome and his eyes were piercing but I respected he was there for a reason and thought I might catch him for a few seconds later. Then a woman came by the elevator and literally started screaming , I mean SCREAMING his name and just noise. They quickly escorted him into a room to never appear again I'm sure. lol She was still jumping around as I walked back to my office. I understand excitement but that reaction...no. Kate wasn't too bad, gushy but she seemed normal later talking to him and if he was her Dad's favorite, it was a treat.

Yes, sorry I didn't make that clear. It's amazing how they can hide things now without the potted plants they used many years ago. ; )

I liked all 3 too, the second was very nice but I would be leery of the terrace with a young child, left alone one minute, he can climb on a chair and get hurt. Having a washer and dryer is a plus in Europe so that was nice too. I hope he isn't swinging those swords too much around his son, a good workout but different. I feel they were kind of nice/ boring so they played the sword hobby up a lot. Poor dad home with the baby, has to have his down time for his sanity. They never seem to care as much with the women staying home, if they want to be close to town, they are asking too much. ; ) -
That's true. That conversation was forgotten in all the later drama and it was so emotional, I'm glad I found it again and the clip shows a short video of it. Now when I see Jack give him his necklace next show, I'll cry knowing that is all he has. " His (likely) brash decision in the distant past to do away with the models he and his father built together when he was younger rests heavily on Kevin, his voice breaking with emotion as he reveals the only tangible thing he has left of his father: a necklace Jack used to wear. “I have this -- this necklace, this is his, and it’s the only thing I have left of him, and at first I didn’t want to wear it, I wouldn’t wear it, I wouldn’t even look at it but now it’s all I have now, I can’t take it off now,” Kevin says, unexpectedly crying over his father years later

I know Sophia is pregnant and they are hiding that well. She looks great in pics off the show but obviously too large now to show without some camera tricks and angling. I would hate to see that with Kate, it's like an excuse to keep the weight story line going in a way and she's doesn't strike me as the "oops, I'm pregnant" type. She is getting older though and if she was to have a child, it would be maybe next season or two. Fogleman this past summer, said he hadn't seen Jack's death accurate anywhere online....please he must have missed this site. lol If we didn't offer 50 or so scenario's, I"m sure it's here somewhere! If not, his version is not as good. ; )

Yes this interview goes over that. http://www.etonline.com/tv/201817_this_is_us_reveals_new_clues_on_when_jack_died They made the house fire seem really bad, maybe so they couldn't use it again, fresh start, but yeah, I'd think games, etc. would have gotten burned or singed or smell like smoke. He does bring up the necklace. He also said, "And I hated him for it,” he says, before sharing just how affected he was emotionally and physically by the loss of his father. “And I couldn’t eat for a month and I used to wake myself up crying so I could cry myself back to sleep again. That’s what happened." That's a common feeling but I wonder if he was saving the dog or maybe suicide because the hate could have been, "It could have been prevented" type of thing.

If she is pregnant, she must lose it, was this when they are all grown as teens? That to me would be an odd twist and not fit in very well. Time will tell.

I did also. I think the word "beam" was way overused but they were so cute I forgave them. : ) Realtor was adorable but not as charming as some of the others. I liked the first house and think it looked very nice. The bathroom in their bedroom (was it was the only one?) was odd but the toilet wasn't exposed, just the shower/sink. Very pretty area. My daughter was in Brittany for a year and for her age, the villages were pretty but got boring. I think for them, it would be perfect. It's been a while since they had a nice, fresh, realistic couple. I hope there are more in the future. -
I agree. It's a horrible experience and it takes so long in real life to get insurance or any help after the initial few days or weeks. This interview with Chrissy Metz gives the best look at his death and her guilt. I wish they left in the therapy session she talks about with Kevin last show. I was like "what theapy?" I knew it wasn't the drums. http://ew.com/tv/2017/03/08/this-is-us-chrissy-metz-kate-confession-jack-death/ One part of it: How do you think fans will respond to Kate saying, “It’s my fault”? One read is that we feel for her more deeply than ever, that she is so haunted by guilt. Another is that we need to hire a security detail for you. Correct. I think it’s the latter. (Laughs.) Because, ooooh, there is so much undying love, no pun intended, for Jack. People get really hyped up and emotional about it, so I hope that they will have empathy for Kate, and I hope that they can understand that she would never do anything malicious. That’s the hope.

Very interesting interview about Kate's guilt and how the therapy session she talks about was cut out. I wondered about that. http://ew.com/tv/2017/03/08/this-is-us-chrissy-metz-kate-confession-jack-death/

I've met some at work that were all excited last year and we discussed it at lunch, etc. but not now. One hasn't watched yet, will watch 3 over the weekend, another said she feels the death hovers and taints some other story lines, it's clues now and not substance. A friend of mine years ago, lost her Dad who was living with them and her home in a horrible fire. He died of smoke inhalation. The death was the worst, but I feel they are not discussing the aftermath of the fire at all. Maybe they can't because it's part of "the death" and we can't go there yet, but that is a huge deal. All your belongings, clothes, memorabilia, your comfort zone, is gone. My friend said you are wearing clothes you don't like from Red Cross, she had supplies she was grateful for but not what she would buy, everything was disjointed and like a dream. You feel guilty because everyone is giving you things but nothing is "yours". She was most grateful friends gave her pictures of her family since most burned and computers weren't used as much then. I would think Jack's pictures would have burned also. The death was numbed by all the changes but I hope they cover how the entire tragedy affects the family, Jack's death without a house fire is awful and life changing but adding losing your entire home that caused his death, I'm surprised everyone didn't need therapy. Once it's over with, you can see flashbacks of them after the fire and not have the gap from 17 to 30's.
-
I think they set it up for everyone to think it was a car accident but it was too easy and done often. A fire is more dramatic. I wish they would stay a little longer with stories like the foster child. Randall with his children, Randall waiting for a fake Mom to show up, Randall with his children, it works some shows, others is feels choppy.
-
I feel he made it out or was at least not trapped until the whole house burned. I fear for the anti-climatic ending since I don't like the older Rebecca but I hope that is still a small part and their youth is still emphasized. If they gave Milo a 3 year contract, there must be more flashbacks coming. They said he's not going anywhere and explained to him, most of his work will be in flashback and he was fine with it. It's not like he gets paid less. ; ) I like the adult Randall, but really enjoy the younger 3 and almost am annoyed sometimes when it switches back. This past show with Sly and Kevin and Kate though, I liked a lot and I feel it was because there wasn't any talk about weight or girlfriend/boyfriends, just them.
-
Another speculation thread from Milo: How big of a clue will that last sequence prove to be? How would you characterize the level of clue that we just received? I would say on a major level — as any Hasbro board game in the ‘80s. You’re going to discover things, you’re going to get clues that will lead up to it. I know Dan has said it, but if you look at that last segment with the teen Big Three and Miguel — there’s a dog. Whose dog is it? You never heard about a dog. Randall being comforted by a pretty redhead: Who’s the pretty redhead? We haven’t met a pretty redhead in his life yet. When teen Kate says, “I need to find Kevin, I need to tell Kevin,” we see him making out with a teen Sophie, and he’s in a cast. I don’t remember Kevin’s leg ever being broken. He’s a star athlete with the busted leg. Does that change his course in life? Because even little Kevin in the Thanksgiving episode talked about wanting to play quarterback for the Steelers when he grew up. Was that really a possibility? And is that how his life and world changed and [set up] the path that he took to get into acting? There are a lot of those things. You have to pay attention to these things being introduced to the story, and then you’re going to understand the timeline. I think at this point that people can understand that the burned-down house has to do with Jack’s death, but more importantly is [the question]: How much time does he actually have?
-
I can see Kate having the ashes, maybe it wasn't from the beginning but after her Mom got married. Having his urn might have been not necessary, she had his necklace, his heart, her memories. I always noticed no matter how many times Kate blamed herself, no one says, "No you weren't" or "No one blames you" I feel it's to keep the mystery up a bit. There's no kindness toward her mother if she really caused her husband's death, no guilty platitudes. I like that Jack didn't just want to have a date with Rebecca. Many alcoholics and other addicts are very depressed and that's the last thing on their mind. I have a friend who says it has been months because her husband is dealing with his addictions and AA and trying to not need medication. If he was happy and carefree, it wouldn't really be real.
