Tiny House Hunters - General Discussion

I think for some, they have an idea of moving around, but usually you don't. Even travel bloggers have written that it was hard to find places to stay and being on the road a lot, gas is pricey and any tire damage, things like that. It can be fun if in the right mindset, but with kids? Zack Giffin, host of THN, said a lot park with friends or family but how many people will let that happen and how do they get electricity or places to dispose of waste in your backyard legally? A lot of questions and it varies state to state so I agree, smaller is nice, we all don't need mansions or can afford them, but the wheel aspect makes it very hard to insure and resell. -

We had that, my kids would be filthy and then say the water was dirty and it was kind of sensible. So we had a hand shower with attachment to get the dirtier water off or soap and that transitioned to regular showers. I never could relax in a tub, not my thing, but a fancy shower like I've seen in some of these shows, I'd love that. ; ) -

Our church is having a raffle on a red corvette. I think it's not practical but I suppose that is the point. If I won, I would have to sell, the taxes, insurance and not having an adequate garage would cost me too much. This education in economics with winnings started years ago with game shows. Participants would realize they won all this stuff but had to pay taxes on it before they took it home. It was in very small print. My mom read about someone who just couldn't and had to forfeit some of her winnings. Everything comes with a price, it's just if it's worth it to you. I'd rather win cash and just have the taxes taken off the top. ; ) -

Casa in Cabo...Gretchen and Rob buying a home in Mexico for rental and themselves. Pretty scenery but kind of blah, budget, budget, budget...lol. I FF a little because I wouldn't miss much in the script. They both had beautiful blue eyes but kind of one dimensional in how they were portrayed. All the places were nice, they obviously had money, I would have wanted the condo because of upkeep and it was pretty with balcony. If one more person worries about guests!! Geez. How many are you having and how often? Of course, they didn't get the condo which she wanted, which was kind of obvious when they only showed one. -

I saw this older episode on youtube and I wondered how the husband could want to live in a town where most spoke Italian and he didn't. So remote. I must say, having relatives from S. Italy myself, it was charming but I felt I'd be so far out of my comfort zone. -

The Paris episode had some nice places, but it did seem like there was a skip in the video with reminding us about the money and the leg comments...she isn't the only tall woman or dancer. I guess the producers thought it was cute but it was overkill. The last over budget apartment was nicer (to my memory) of any Paris apartment she has shown anyone. Nicer in the sense of room size and American-like kitchens. She seemed rude in her reactions but she already knew she wasn't taking it. I agree, I can't picture her grandma nodding her head over all her decisions. You don't know what she left her but hopefully she left her enough to have some left over for savings and she does well. I would have taken the first one but loved the third one. -

I didn't like the Rotterdam one, she ruined it. He seemed like a nice guy but the chemistry was off. They should try to change the script a little to make it more enjoyable. They all say the same things. I hope "it's kind of growing on me" keeps growing for the husband. It was the longest "after shot" they have done in a while which was nice. Usually you see them with 50 friends they just met or chopping peppers for their dinner and a minute update. ; ) -
I put back on 20 of the 50 I lost 3 years ago, but it drove me mad that people would keep saying I was too skinny...I was exactly in the middle of my BMI and a size 6/8, not anorexic at 5'5. I think that with so many people in the USA being overweight, it does change your perceptions. I hope future generations enjoy food but are more active and enjoy more of the outdoors without their heads being down 90% of the time checking phones or texting messages. Balance is the goal.

It's Tiny House Nation and yes, that sounds accurate. ; ) Really every home show seems to show chopping multi-colored peppers, must be a good look for the camera. I think THN got to be a way to make money for some because they heard about the high interest in them. Interest yes, but not actually living in them full time. at least THOW. You need to be in certain areas to be legal and stay for more than 30 days. I just find it odd that they don't look at all the ones for sale even from the show, and think, "Maybe this isn't a good idea". There were some built that were nice, couples were outdoorsy and liked being off grid but most were not like that and you could count the days it was going to be for sale. The funniest was the ad I saw saying he couldn't show pictures yet because the show hadn't aired. -

I agree but really that was all Nebraska had to offer at those prices? It was dismal. I missed the part about 2 states, that's a little more "ouch". I caught some vintage shows on Amazon from HGTV, only one in Boston seemed to have them under 500.000 but it was interesting to see the old homes and history and I love the Victorian and Tudor styles. -

So the MA woman decided to go public with her big power ball win, not my choice but good luck to her. I don't think this show will get her but you never know. She looked very overwhelmed. I would not know what to do with that kind of money, would prefer much less, but a lawyer who understand lottery winnings and a few good financial advisors would help. All the good you can do with that money but it is overwhelming to have it dumped in your lap. I don't think David could contain himself with the homes he could show her...."You won 430.0000, no condos!!" : ) I watched a few older shows to escape the news for a bit and most were winners like Carla from Nebraska that had very underwhelming homes. Some so old they had carpet all over and very dark. Smart choices though considering (which many critics never think of) they might have a lot of debt to get rid of and kids who need help. It just seems awkward watching David say anything about a 199,000 home that really has no perks. I also didn't like how he again said to someone "they couldn't afford him, he would use up the rest of the million dollars". We know he does high end, this show is a side job but don't inflate yourself for a plug. -

My daughter said that they probably liked the publicity, a "forgotten" part of England. She wasn't surprised prices weren't that high since its not outside London which is where many look or near a big town. Very quaint though. I also thought he might snore, they have been married many years, some couples told me 2 bedrooms saved their marriages. ; ) Maybe the guest rooms so couples want is for them too. -

@Suebee12 was this the show "corporate america" was overused....omg : ) Seattle to Isle of Wight England. On the English channel, pretty area. Wife wanted to move closer to mom with Parkinson's. Wish list 4 bedrooms, 2 baths. 1500 a month. Made wife the financial wizard, husband, less practical. Liked the first home, pretty and updated. Views were so lovely. Pretty patio. 1600 Second home, larger, not on beach and open floorplan, french doors, etc. No furniture but you can furnish what you want, I would want my own bed anyway. More like a home in the states. Third, was in a village, thatched roofs, bungalow, with 3 bedroom, only 1300 a month. Nicer than my kids apartment for 1200 : ) Pretty deck and patio, garden and sea view. Too small for them, but I loved it. Husband was irritating, but got his sea view home. I would have taken one or three myself. : ) -

I agree, there are so many online for sale, right after show airs or even before. Kind of depressing for the people pushing the movement. The smart tech house I was a little surprised at because all the cool gadgets they wanted, but again, maybe they thought resale would be better. (but still for sale) And this one has been for many months. -

I watched a show with a couple from Pennsylvania with 2 kids going to Rome. Was a little distracted by my own kids but it seemed to be a show without much drama. I really liked the home the wife did in town and over budget, the layout, close to everything, the charm, but the husband won out with the townhouse which was the largest and had a pool about 20-30 minutes away. I realize it was rented beforehand so I guess she wanted a larger home also. ; ) Their big "issue" was small or large. The participant who did a very detailed youtube video on her experience with HHI, said she needed something so she just picked an appliance she didn't end up getting I think. Kind of silly when you think about it, but that's what they think you want to watch. Very pretty scenery and cultural shots, I might watch this one again when I have more time. It seemed to have more outdoor shots and less "I need this" which is nice. -

This house wasn't very realistic too with 2 homes/trailers, one for the kids, and now it's for sale. https://tinyhouselistings.com/listing/omaha-ne-12-high-end-double-tiny-house/ 150,000??? This one was on this year. Does anyone last in the "box" ? Maybe why "where are they now" is not a popular option. https://tinyhouselistings.com/listing/southeastern-minnesota-12-modern-and-spacious/ 92,000 I can almost guarantee, that was not near the cost on the show. -

Texas to England....does anyone walk into a nice brick home on budget in England and say, I really don't like the counter tops? This isn't your forever home or being custom made. 1650 a month and close to town. Had husband act domineering and acted like a jerk at times, but I guess that's the price for being on TV. (at least I hope they are acts) The second brick home was built in the 1860's, very updated and cute but out in the country. What a beautiful home but without a car, kind of isolating. It reminded me of pictures of my daughter's boyfriends family home in England, the gardens, patio, etc. but they didn't have the extra floor with bath. The third home, another brick home, closer to shops/school was in Colby. You could walk almost anywhere. 1250 a month for a lot of charm. I liked it. Older kitchen, like mine, but it's in England so I love it. They didn't so it got crossed off first. I guess these shows are hard for me because I don't have Tiiffany taste but I liked the first home they picked also and was glad they didn't show them going over budget and living away from town, with 4 kids, I would go crazy without a park and potential friends nearby. Nice experience for them. A doctor I worked for, his daughter moved to England because of her husband's job for 4 years and 2 kids in tow. They were outside London and she liked it but when she returned to states, said it was never "home". You adjust to the food, stores, the differences in many customs and she misses some things, but is glad to be back. And now she has friends to visit in the future. :) -

Belgium episode wasn't too bad. I remember my daughter talking about how pretty it was when she visited on a study abroad summer session. I'm claustrophobic also but usually there are stairs in an elevator building...3 floors, she could do that at her age. (unless that safety feature is not a code there?) First apartment wasn't bad for the price but not very pretty. Second was very modern and close to everything. The second bedroom being too small wouldn't sway me, for a short visit, parents could stay on inflatable bed or hotel. :) Third, nice under budget but half hour from work. Nothing overwhelmed me, so I didn't feel a pull toward any of them. Prices weren't bad, where I live in CT, 1200 a month is a one or two bedroom apartment but not furnished. They seemed more scripted than others, at least Jason. I realize they are always scripted but you shouldn't make it seem so obvious, the "repeat phrases" are annoying. -

I was thinking most must be bought, but I wonder if some are contacted before they do. I saw an article for a winner not too far from CT where I live. New Jersey winners, I saw their show. Glad they showed sensibility and can have a relaxing retirement. https://www.njlottery.com/content/portal/en/newsandevents/newsinput/2015/jcr:content/body/newsarchieve_578/file.res/NJL_12-31_HGTV-CASH4LIFE-Winners.pdf They were together 30 years and were also featured in an article about marriage equality earlier in the year. I read another story about 27,000 tax bills and one poor guy had to take a mortgage to pay for other taxes and bills and then his dad got cancer and had high bills. He had to sell at a loss I think. Life always has curve balls and I would think the show might not have any liability but the lottery commission should try to give info on practical things. We all know following advice is a personal thing but impulse buys are usually never good. (although the pair of pants in my closet are cheaper than a home) : ) -

That's what the host said in an interview in a sense, that taxes are boring, etc. It's not boring, you aren't given a math course, just say, " I got, 650,000 from a million dollar win" that's reality and this is what I want to spend. The last show had David saying he LOVES to go over budget, you don't have to twist his arm, that I think isn't funny and since it isn't HIS money, he shouldn't be scripted to say that. -

I'd love a Victorian too, all the nooks and crannies and built-ins. Boston area is expensive but they didn't need so much house and they will never be able to renovate unless there is a huge backstory they don't want viewers to know. I hope so or it will be for sale in 2 years. The raining in the house bothered me too, very unsafe so I'm glad they are out. It seemed they must have bought that earlier since it had cribs in the rooms and the house seemed the same although you didn't see much on the update (pool table seemed covered in background)
