David appears to have had a very limited education in communication at the school for the deaf where he started at a young age. He learned to sign, but not to lipread or speak. His family didn't learn to communicate with him. I had a deaf student 50 years ago when I was a teacher and he was totally mainstreamed and lipread and spoke with the articulation and intonation of someone who had never heard speech. He didn't learn ASL until he went to a boarding school for the deaf for high school and then he was able to communicate using both speech and signs.

In describing his background, he said that he was sent to a boarding school for the deaf where he learned ASL but specified that he didn't know how to lipread which I find hard to believe. Even hearing people can lipread a bit when they need to in certain situations. I was surprised to see both he and his friend signing with both hands while driving. I don't think cochlear implants work for all types of hearing loss: "What type of hearing loss do cochlear implants not help? When the auditory nerve is damaged or missing, this is known as a neural hearing loss. Hearing aids and cochlear implants cannot help because the nerve is not able to pass on sound information to the brain."
