Target Practice: Poisoned Arrow (The Bitterness Thread)
tangerine95 replied to slayer2's topic in Arrow
I agree they are supporting characters but some of them really drag down the storylines they're supposed to support. And it comes off like its not that Felicity,Digg or Oliver need them for their stories more like they're put there and attached to it so they have something to do.I really dislike this thing arrow does with assigning a newbie to a main character and just having most of their interactions be with that newbie. They almost never mix it up and it results in the team never feeling like an actual team. Also the thing they do is not have consistent OTA interaction even while they acknowledge their importance so that results in Felicity and Diggle having like 2 one on one scenes a season.I hope they solve that now that the flashbacks ending freed up some time but I'm not counting on it tbh.- 5.6k replies

That has bothered me as well, keeping Felicity away from Digg's and Oliver's storylines this episode and in a totally different tone with Curtis.Which is why I dislike Curtis and Felicity dynamic, everything turns into a buddy comedy and it gets to be too much and not fit into what's happening kinda like Ray and Felicity back in season 3.But I also think that's a consequence of the show dragging out those plots.Digg is talking to Dinah rn because it's not time for him to be honest or accept his issues and resolve them just like Felicity did with Rory at the start of her helix arc and they saved the ota, olicity stuff for the end. And Felicity is being kept from Oliver and William issues because they want to drag out olicity until a later episode even when it makes sense she's the one to talk to Oliver and be more involved.
-
Yeah definitely already sick of Dinah. And I really don't get them insisting Dinah and BS have history and things to resolve. They literally have none,BS doesn't even have history with the concept of BC.Their rivalry makes no sense and is so shallow there's barely a storyline there. They're basically making it up out of nothing and hoping the audience buys into it because both actresses played BC and have the same power and not anything that's actually on screen.
-
I agree,I get that she's an internal character and all that but they could have shown it.After season 1 she got very few moments where she wasn't just putting on the Queen mask to the point that a lot of people think that's all there is to her and I can't really blame them for it.That's why I liked season 7 for Dany, she was finally allowed some emotion. Jon lost all his talent for politics and a lot of his gray areas as a character and is basically Ned 2.0 which I think even tho he wants to be that in the books,he isn't.
-
I like them both but the show definitely took out a lot of depth they had in the books. They did that with a lot of characters but Jon especially I think.Used to bother me a lot more before when there were books to compare it to.I do think Kit and Emilia do well tho,I never got why so much complaining about that. They're not Lena or Peter level for sure but imo they're fine for the roles. I agree about the romances in GoT,Jon and Dany for me at least are the first one I've liked. The fact that no one was raped, forced or threatened into it is already a step up plus I want some happiness for the both of them tbh no matter how it ends.
-
lol yeah they definitely want Rhaegar and Lyanna to have the simpathy of the audience if nothing else. I agree they had to fit a falling in love plot in a 7 episode season so some stuff got rushed.I had no problems buying the love story because even before they met I believed those two characters would totally fall for each other and were basically designed as perfect and complementary for one another but I would have loved to get a few more casual getting to know each other type scenes. And making their love scene part of a montage was pretty dramatic and all but not the best choice for a first time love scene.I still think they did pretty well tho,I enjoyed the Jon/Dany storyline despite wanting more.
-
I think they very much do want people to root for Jon and Dany despite playing up the they're related thing at the end.The season was shorter so they got less time than I sure would be given to them in a 10 episode season but imo they were treated as the endgame couple we should want.As someone who really likes the couple I wish we got the first kiss and I think it was a oversight not to include it but I don't believe GoT pays much attention to that tbh and it was clear their's was a love scene and they focused on that aspect of it instead of making it more gratuitous or graphic like their usual.I agree the he loved her and she loved him thing was very deliberate in case the audience didn't get it from the long emotional look they gave them. I do think they want the audience to think they're doomed to be a tragic love but I don't think we're supposed to see them as wrong or negative. They don't even seem to want Rhaegar and Lyanna viewed in a bad light and they are very romanticized in the show.
-
Yeah I'll be pissed if it's joint.I don't mind Curtis helping but that's supposed to be Felicity's storyline. Its been teased since season 3,before Curtis even showed up or was a regular.I would seriously hate it if they made it his storyline too so he has something to do this season.Especially because they showed they have no idea how to make their areas of expertise look different.Curtis just takes over stuff Felicity used to do and she's suddenly not allowed to do things she used to be able to.
-
The episode was underwhelming and I expected that tbh so no big surprise because based on the promo it was going to focus on stuff I hated or didn't care about. It was still way better than the season 5 premiere and no one was a robot version of themselves so I'm fine with it lol I really expected them to drag out the reveals of Felicity and Digg being alive since it was such a big deal that they couldn't put them in any trailers or allow reporters to talk about them but it was no big deal and they're revealed pretty fast.Proves even more how dumb and unnecessary that cliffhanger was imo. I liked Oliver and Felicity, they're basically in the same spot they were in the last eps of season 5 so I'm glad we didn't miss much and get to see it develop on screen.Their scenes were really cute even tho they were tentative and holding back a little.I liked that Oliver really wants to talk to her and include her in his life,it's exactly what she wanted from him before,I'm glad we see him evolve that way.I do wish we got more of Felicity.I was honestly expecting like one scene and only revealing her at the end but when it turned out that it was just glossed over that she lived, they should have given her more or at least some hint of a set up for her storyline. I'm kinda confused by why Digg is so affected since they've been in situations like that before and it wasn't an issue to that extent. It could be because he's wounded I guess. It could be good to explore a PTSD storyline for him since they didn't really do it after he shot Andy and all that in season 5 felt more like a way to keep him away for a few eps. Dinah vs BS is totally dumb and ridiculous imo. There's no reason why BS has such a grudge against her,no on screen reason.Their whole rivalry is based on off screen stuff like Dinah replaced LL as BC but it makes no sense on screen.Their lines were cringeworthy and lame and the acting just as bad. I've realized I only like or tolerate whatever newbie has the least screentime.I thought I liked Dinah but they gave her a little more to do and she already annoyed me. Oliver and William is as bad as I thought. They need to stop writing the kid as a six year old when he looks 14.It's just weird.I feel bad for saying this about a kid but they really cast a bad child actor for William and they're giving him a somewhat big storyline with the lead of the show. It's really not helping no matter how hard SA is trying.I don't get why not just let him stay with other relatives but have Oliver build a relationship with him.You get the same thing without the huge commitment or constant need to excuse why the kid isn't there or without inevitably making Oliver look bad when he's shown spending most of his time doing superheroes stuff while the kid is left with the nanny.
-
6 seasons, years of knowing each other and being in love, dated and lived together for over a year, were engaged, literally been in life and death situations, saved each other multiple times but yeah it's too soon for them lol
-
Better than the previous trailers but still pretty lame and boring.Legit they didn't even try to hype who died, they just excluded a few characters and are acting like they don't exist, that's so beyond dumb. KC's acting is so awful and over exaggerated lol.And yeah Stephen seemed kinda off but it might be just my hate for any scene including that kid and there were way too many.

Heartaches, Bromances, True Love and Team Arrow: the Relationships Thread

I did notice Felicity rambling way more and constantly making jokes in 5a and I agree it's probably at least in part them trying to please the crowd that wanted her as comic relief just like they made Oliver emotionless half the time because some people said he wasn't badass anymore. It did fit both of their characters to deal with it in that way with Felicity trying to joke around and act happy to hide her feelings since it is something they established she does and Oliver with shutting down and focusing on the mission. But I can't really tell if that was their intention because they kept claiming in interviews that Oliver and Felicity were fine and being totally mature about everything and it wasn't something they ever addressed on screen like I would expect. At least it stopped with Felicity after they killed off Billy and she was back to normal and I really loved her scenes.Robot Oliver was there until 5.16-5.17. -

I can't even take the 100th episode seriously as anything other than fanservice as much as I hate that word.Something like seeing a totally different version of his life where people who died were alive,he didn't know half of his closest friends, his sister wanted to stay there forever etc would have an impact on how Oliver behaved after and would have served as some kind of wake up call.Instead he goes on to live as he did all season 5,dates a random he didn't seem that into, isn't alarmed about Thea until she gets Susan fired even tho she was legit about to stay on alien spaceship forever rather than face reality, never even talks to anyone about it.No wonder SA said it's an episode you could skip and it wouldn't make a difference on the season. I think in any other season after season 1 it would be Felicity he was marrying and that the only reason it was Laurel was that they wanted to throw her fans a bone after they killed her off and imo were totally planning on not having her show up again after season 5.They probably knew olicity fans will be pissed but that they'll get a olicity reunion by the end of the season and a real wedding the next season so they thought it wouldn't matter.Imo the people who thought that meant he was still in love with LL were the ones who thought that all along anyway. -

Yeah I think Rory being so well received had to do with him being used for mostly Felicity and sometimes Oliver to express their thoughts and feelings. He was really a supporting character in a way none of the other newbies were.Tho I also think the actor was pretty good and had great chemistry with both Felicity and Oliver and that really helped make him likable. Imo that's how you introduce a character in a show this established, have him create bonds with the main cast, tie him to a main characters storyline or some big season plot point but don't make him a huge focus right from the start and don't have main characters playing supporting roles to him.I really think that way a character earns his spot and then next season I'm more open to seeing storylines about him. That's how it sort of was with Curtis in season 4 and I was looking forward to him in season 5 but they messed that up by not giving him an actual purpose on the team and just having him take over other characters roles so he has something to do. -
Digg was my first guess but Felicity might actually make more sense in the situation because she has insight into how someone who had an absent parent show up would feel and even tho her dad didn't die he still completely disappeared from her life and she had her life changed at a young age because of it like William's will with Samantha probably dying so she can help him see things from the kid's perspective.Ugh I hate that whole thing so much lol I think the only reason they're even questioning if BS can be redeemed is because they have to have her sticking around and it's an excuse for why the team will go easy on her.I hope Felicity keeps her attitude from season 5 regarding BS because she was the only one showing sense in that whole thing. But I agree,if she gets redeemed she's getting sent away imo.

Target Practice: Poisoned Arrow (The Bitterness Thread)

Yeah the statue was so bad.And they legit had it made so they can destroy it 9 episodes later by LL's evil version and right before they introduced their new BC lol I don't buy in the hype about season 5 tbh, sounds a lot like people who don't like olicity trying to act like it was so amazing because olicity were broken up and had few moments until way later in the season. The villain was an improvement but for me it was mostly after he got revealed and because the actor was so good. His actual back story and motivation doesn't stand on its own without JS's performance elevating it.My biggest problem with season 5 was that it was for the most part emotionless and any emotion it allowed was connected mostly to new characters I had no connection to.Previous seasons had dumb plots and storylines too but I don't think they lost the emotional aspect for as long as season 5 did.- 5.6k replies

I think what Oliver will realize in the crossovers won't be how much he loves Felicity because I think its clear he already knows that, even with season 5 I don't think he ever doubted that as much as thought he ruined his chance with her for good.Imo it could be more like him realizing they don't need to go slow and not wanting to waste anymore time, that type of thing and it leads to them getting married.
-
Basically translates to I just really want KC to be BC,doesn't matter if it makes sense or not.
-
Yeah for sure if they're already going with this then nice scenes with Felicity and Oliver are probably the best way to go and I think it will work for most people.I'm just struggling with accepting that I have to deal with that at all,I literally skip even fics with that kind of premise of dad Oliver to a 12 year old and step mom Felicity.Just not my thing at all.Even olicity babies I only want if its the last season. Same, now that Samantha in a coma seems less and less likely I'm moving my hopes to the grandparents lol.I really have a hard time imagining they will actually commit to Oliver raising a kid from now to the end of the show so I have some hope it's temporary.
-
Tbh for me scenes with Felicity won't help me want William around,no matter how cute.I just never think I wish my fave ship suddenly had a random kid with questionable acting and writing in their life on a regular basis,it's never been a storyline I wanted for olicity and I've never enjoyed it when shows add secret kids in any way.But still cute scenes are better than using the kid as a reason for drama and break ups so there's that at least. But really I think arrow has been the worst at this trope.First use the kid for the break up that doesn't make logical sense, that lasts too long and makes the lead character look awful. Then most likely kill off the mother and make the lead of the superhero show raise the kid they didn't bother connect the audience to in any way before such a huge change.
-
Basically all of season 7 has been loss after loss for Dany, not to even mention stuff that happened in previous seasons. And then when she actually got a chance to take the throne she sacrificed it to go north and fight the WW.I really wouldn't say she had anything just given to her or that she didn't struggle unless the whole world turns on her in season 8. With the Sam thing,I can see it going both ways tbh.Imo Sam is smart enough that if he knows how it happened and that they refused not just to bend the knee but refused to be neutral by joining the NW,he would get that it wasn't some cruel decision and that it's just what happens in a war.But I can also see them ignoring logical explanations the way they did with Sansa and Arya this season and making it a drama since they did somewhat set it up by making sure Sam doesn't find out yet.
-
He also apparently answered a OTA question when he said that from what I've seen.I seriously don't want olicity married in the crossover or anywhere near WA so I'm hoping that's not happening but it's looking more likely unfortunately. It just better not be some double ceremony, that would be so awful. I also really don't get why Digg would officiate for WA,you'd think they would have someone from their own show to do it.
-
I think Arrow just doesn't have enough time for as many characters as it has on the team especially when most of them are masks that usually have to go through versions of a hero journey or a training arc.And they're constantly replacing them and having to do through similar arcs over and over again.Between Oliver being the lead and taking up so much screentime and the flashbacks there in every episode for 5 seasons, its not wonder they're not good at integrating new people into the team. And I'm not even sure they exactly mean for it to feel like there's a A and B team, that's just the dynamic that gets created when they introduce new team members and then limit their interactions to mostly one or maybe 2 other people on the team or create new friendships that sideline older ones.It just makes it seem like the team isn't a unit and some of them barely interact in a real non mission related way. Imo that's why OTA is so liked and people are so attached to it,because they bothered to created individual bonds for each of them in the early seasons and even when it gets ignored later, that foundation is always there and their scenes feel natural and earned.
-
I agree there's definitely a trend of masked characters with comic book names not earning their place on the show and I think that's what makes them so easily and often replaced. Most of the time it's all tell and don't show with them and they don't have a unique or necessary spot on the show. I seriously doubt Dinah will really be a leader apart from like among the B team like in season 5 because she does come across as more mature than the rest of the newbies. And tbh I don't even care if she clashes with the team over BS and goes after her alone or whatever, the only thing I want from her character is to keep BS her story and away from OTA as much as possible.
-
Yeah it's always funny to me when an actress playing BC acts like her character not being ready for a relationship or something is the reason it won't happen and not the fact that Oliver is in love with Felicity and that has been the story for years.
