Magnum P.I. (2018) - General Discussion
kirkola replied to Meredith Quill's topic in Magnum P.I. (2018)
I guess that makes me old too. I recognized it...couldn't read it....but I recognized it right away. They were replacing shorthand with computers when I was in High School. -
They need to get someone on to consult on their IT language as well. I'm pretty sure at some point they had Rakesh said he would attack with HyperText Transfer Protocol and I was thrown out completely. You're going to attack a guy with website? I'm only peripheral IT and even I know that is where we get HTTP. Either Simon or Henry is testing Rakesh (still!) or none of these IT people are very good at their jobs.

The dropping your kid off things is real. When I was working retail (during the Pokemon card craze), parents would just drive up, drop their kid off in front of our store, and leave. We had Pokemon Saturdays and the parents must have thought it included free baby-sitting. We also had a little TV and VCR in the kids area of the store, and parents would just leave toddlers there and wander through the store or the mall connected to the store. I'm not sure which is worse, trying to calm a terrified toddler who just realized Mom and Dad are not nearby or trying to referee a 40-year-old and a 6-year-old who both insist that they "own" that Pokemon card. Seriously, adults would play "if I win, I get this card" versions of Pokemon or the version where they got to keep the best of the kid's deck, while giving the kid absolute junk.

Magnum P.I. (2018) - General Discussion

I never liked Rick or TC in the original either. I generally preferred TC over Rick, but that has more to do with the fact that the 1970's/1980's playboy roles never have appealed to me. I get that original Magnum and Rick were pretty similar in their ability to charm ladies (getting whomever they wanted at the moment), but Rick always more of a used car salesman. That said I love the newer Rick & TC. I want more Stephen and Zach working with Magnum. They just light up the screen. -
As for the email thing... I work with people every day who have no idea what their password is, and some have no idea how to access their email at all. From what it looked like, Dr. Kapoor's email was one of those very basic emails from like 20 years ago. Back when Hotmail was all the rage and people thought having an AOL account meant they were on the Internet. And it looked like it was long dormant. I had no problems with him not knowing the password or that it was only 5 characters (based on the age of the email account). I did have trouble with an email account that old and dormant should have been disabled long before that day. I've lost a couple of email accounts like that. I simply forgot them so they were destroyed by the web host.

I do hope the rules are different in NYC. In Florida, Medicaid won't insure a family of 3 making $45 a year. So it felt very realistic to me. I did feel that the doctors did a bad job of explaining the whole divorce thing. For what it's worth, I'm not Catholic. But I do know that to be legally married in the eyes of the state (government), you just have to sign the marriage license. And to be legally married in the eyes of the Church, you have to do the ceremony with a priest. So Max and Dr. Floyd should have explained that it's just a divorce on paper (in the government sense), but that they will still be married in the eyes of God.

I don't twitter (have one, but I rarely go on), so I will always miss whatever Carina says. But it really feels like Isobel leaves traces personality or bread crumbs (or something) whenever she enters someone else's mind. And really, there ought to be consequences for influencing someone like she does. I connected the fact that Momma Mimi (love that name, shapeshifter!) kept calling Liz "Rosa" with the scene earlier where Isobel couldn't influence Liz because "Rosa" stopped her. Momma Mimi knows something even if she's getting it jumbled and it sounds like the plot of Independence Day. I still don't think Isobel killed the teens. I think she was trying to save them. I know the two TV series' aren't supposed to be connected and I need to read the books, but I just can't see Isobel being all evil and killer-ish.

If I were writing this...the arc wouldn't be over. I would have Han continuing to act the way he does until the board has no choice but to fire/demote him for 1) transferring a resident (when to the best of my knowledge, he's not allowed to do), 2) blackmailing the medical board, and 3) everything else illegal he does while in his position. He's a lawsuit waiting to happen and not good for the overall image of the hospital. I get that doctors often have a God complex, which we very much see in both Andrews and Melendez. And even...to a certain extent Reznick. I also get that the head of the hospital has to make the tough calls. But Han seems to be bordering on criminal. All that being said, I adore Daniel Dae Kim in the role.

Magnum P.I. (2018) - General Discussion

And I agree that it was hard to not compare the original cast from the new cast. They were really tough shoes to fill. But they have certainly found their places. Though I'm still not sure how I feel about Higgins. I like the actress well enough (she's doing a great job), but she still doesn't feel right to me. -
They haven't burned the entire bunch because of Amy. Apparently kidnapping a child and injecting her with God-only-knows-what is okay in the scientist's worldview, but they draw the line at killing a child. In reality, we reject all three parts (kidnapping, injection, and killing), though historically even that isn't true. The extra people didn't bother me. I sort of assumed that a building that size, had way more people working than Hollywood was willing to pay to be in scenes. I did miss the build up to the Martinez reveal, which made me happy. I've figure out the twist far too often for my taste. It was nice to not catch it for once. The "let's dump the kid with the vamps" bit should have been a huge red flag...and I missed it. As for Amy & Fanning, she's still a child, so her decisions and I think her near-capitulation reflects that. Taking her to the woods and giving her the bicycle, got her away from the protective walls she'd built (Mom & the apartment, Carter, and the Agent).

Predictable doesn't have to mean terrible. If done right (actors and directors know what they are doing), it can still be enjoyable. If it wasn't, I'd have quit watching American television and movies years ago, in favor of European stuff. As it is, I frequently get told I'm not allowed to talk when watching American made stuff because the plot twists and writing is nearly always choreographed.

S01.E09: Road to the Finals/ S01.E10: The Final Mask is Lifted
kirkola replied to OtterMommy's topic in The Masked Singer
Yes, the clues were sometimes too easy. Bee said in her very first intro that you can call her the Empress. Then at the end, she told the judges she'd been singing since the 1950s. It had to be Gladys Knight. She's the Empress of Soul. -

In all honesty, I would love to see Harris do it. It's just the sort of quirky thing he would do "for fun". McCarthy is made an idiotic guess though. I don't know anyone of my generation that had pictures of Doogie on their bedroom walls (one of the first clues). And again, to the best of my knowledge, Harris wasn't on stage at 5 (another of the first clues). Finally, if he was friends with Michael Jackson, it's not exactly common knowledge. -

I think the issue may have more to do with him demanding credit (Nov 2008) from other artists who used Auto Tune. But I don't really know him. I only know what I read on his wikipedia page after seeing his name suggested as Monster on here. Count me as one who knew he would win from the start with the way the judges adored him. But I can't get past the fact that there is no stage anywhere where Gladys Knight isn't the best! Osmond had good stage presence and better all around entertainer. But Knight's voice and pedigree... -
It is also possible that she is hearing and feeling their pain and that is the pain she's experiencing. Sorta like phantom pains that have no actual cause in her body. These goofy scientists should be focused on why they seem connected and less about how to get them to do human bidding.

And now I'm picturing Izzy at a Costco/Sams/BJs buying nail polish remover in bulk. HA! Though in retrospect, he probably already know she buys them in bulk and maybe he's been collecting them out of the trash.

She said it and my immediate reaction was "but you only heard 2 bullets, Liz. Are you as bad at counting as you are a scientist?"

S01.E04: Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?
kirkola replied to tessaray's topic in Roswell, New Mexico
The more I watch international shows (thanks Internet), I'm now convinced it's more about how American actors view gays, rather than straight actors not being able to bring it. It's like the actor is afraid to play gay properly because he's afraid people will think he's gay. When gay men have been successfully playing straight men for years with us none the wiser. It's part of my problem with Alex and Michael. Their love scenes are good. But I don't feel it when they are just talking. And I should be feeling it even then. The actor playing Michael felt more comfortable with Maria than he did with Alex. Which, unfortunately, shows. However, there is enough chemistry in the love scene that I think Michael and Alex can work if they stop being so stiff and let it flow naturally. edited: because I can't spell. -

To be fair, Liz jumps to a lot of conclusions. I would be happier if they had given her any other career than scientist. Because scientists are supposed to use the scientific method better than the goofy way she just decides things are so. I really liked Isobel this episode. And Michael was much improved antagonizing Maria. I'm not feeling Max interacting with Kyle. It's a bit too much HS drama over Liz for adults. -
I don't know that I'm on a particular team one way or the other. But I do know how I'd feel if someone just presented me with the house and said "let's move in here together and raise chickens. And by chickens, I mean...." I would have reacted the same way Nic did. Conrad made the decision to move in together, found them a location, and presented the idea to her. Moving in together is a big step in a relationship and should be discussed as part of a large conversation of "where are we going with this." I do think that Conrad is right that Nic needs someone or something to fix. She's definitely an enabler, which I think she brought up in talking to the other doctor (I still don't know his name). But I can see that if she's trying to break that cycle, she might need her own space to deal with it. But Conrad is also wrong to push the issue with moving in and having kids.

Magnum P.I. (2018) - General Discussion
kirkola replied to Meredith Quill's topic in Magnum P.I. (2018)
But the criminal didn't know that. Personally, I wonder how likely it would have been that the gun, if noticed, wouldn't have just been taken home or sold at an auction, or in some other ways ended up in the hands of someone else (meaning no finger prints, or ways to trace it back to the original criminal). -
Max was much improved this episode. His scenes were well done. Maybe a little melodramatic, but I'm pretty sure that's why we're here. Isobel's scenes with Noah were excellent as well, though, I was speaking his dialogue before Noah could. It's a minor quibble, but I wish the writer's were a bit stronger so I didn't know what he was saying before he said it. On the other hand, Noah had me feeling the lines. Also, nice use of Land Before Time. (awww!) Kyle is still my favorite. Loved his annoyance at Daddy Manes. Yep, aliens landed in 1947, 71 years does not mean imminent threat. And I'm glad they acknowledged it. The Michael/Alex thing is back to bothering me. First Ep, they had no chemistry and made no sense. Second Ep, they finally connected and the chemistry was definitely there. Third Ep, Daddy Manes says no, so Alex breaks up with Michael? Seriously? You're 27-28 years old...and adult. Act like one. I'm still not warming to Liz. I still can't see the logical leaps that jumps from "I met an alien who has the ability to heal people" to "he must have murdered my sister" based on a glow-y hand print. The leap ignores the end of last episode where he went out of his way to save her Dad. Finally, poor Cameron. One minute she's making out with her partner on an actual date, the next she's left behind while her date professes undying love for her date-us interruptus. If she doesn't turn evil by the end of the season, I'll be surprised. She deserves better than Max.

I'd like to see more of the brilliant analytical mathematician actually. Instead of running around acting crazy Ben. But yeah, you're probably right.
