S04.E08: The Mountain And The Viper 2014.06.01
ganesh replied to Meredith Quill's topic in Game Of Thrones
Oberyn, as likeable as he is, isn't that much better than the rest of the lot over there. In the end if you let your bloodthirsty need for revenge cause you to do something stupid, then usually, you die. It's been like that since Ned thought he could trust Littlefinger. This is the issue with Tyrion. I'm having a hard time thinking he's really going to die because he's is very much his father's son, and neither are stupid, which is why they're still alive. His only stupid thing was loving Shea, which isn't that bad. He was the singular architect in the defense of the castle when Stannis invaded. That's why I was asking about a pardon. Although it's going to be hard to justify how killing the previous king can just be pardoned out of hand without seeming like a cheat. -

*molested* by elves. Even better. Why would he be? Sarah is a scam artist and a criminal. It's not like she's going to be hooking up with choir boys. Cal seems like some kind of hacker, like Anonymous. -

I'm not a book reader and while I do enjoy the show, I'm not a rewatcher and don't really seek out additional knowledge beyond what's on the screen. I'm like that with my shows. I know I'm not alone in not being surprised how the fight turned out. Tyrion would have had to be lucky indeed to win two Trials, and there isn't really luck on this show. I certainly enjoyed the fight and the ending. Once Ob started whipping himself into a frenzy and started yelling 'who ordered the Code Red?!' and pointing to the stands, I was like, uh oh. However, regardless of these Trials, would it be possible that Tyrion could be pardoned by the King? Or is this it, finalmente. Because by definition of the Trial, it's the gods who are determining the outcome, which I know no one believes, but I assume that's how the law on this would be written. On a regular tv show, I would say that Tyrion is too good of a character to kill off, but I wouldn't surprised in the least if next week opened up with him getting his head chopped off. -

TV is shockingly clean, predictable, repeatable, and very obvious, when one looks at it holistically, or from a meta-pov. As good as True Detective was, it was a very linear, singular story. Game of Thrones is even rather predictable. They basically said as much on the show. And that's fine, it's not like one can't take a typical detective story and turn it into something really riveting. But, no, no one even shoots by accident, or takes a wrong turn, or just drops a plate because they dropped it, or the dog doesn't bark because sometimes dogs bark. This show has been basically Sarah running around like crazy and now she's practically a shark. She *cannot* stop moving. And that's rippled out to the people she interacts with or influences directly, or indirectly. So Alison flies off the handle because not only is Donnie a monitor, but he's a schmuck because Vic is spying on her and can't get over Sarah. So Leekie has to run into schmuck Donnie who may have never held a gun in his life. The output isn't directly proportional to the input on this show; i.e., cause and effect don't always hold. It's formally complex, and I think that's directed by TPTB. Loosely, it's like what is colloquially called the butterfly effect, and Leekie is an example of that. Shit doesn't necessarily happen randomly, events are connected, but it's not as predictable as just about all tv shows. Several of us over at the other place back in S1 were saying as much. She was fucking up a lot, and by that point Art was getting like, 'wtf Beth?' And the only reason he didn't really push it was because the real Beth had one on him when she covered up for him. Not to mention by then, Sarah received a visit from Helena *at her desk*. She had to get out of there. -

Oh, I was convinced she was going to be snatched. -
Also, didn't he bring his son with him on a trip and he died there when he got sick?

Well, almost right after the dance, the Brit walked in on Abe pawing at Anna, so they may have chalked it up to drunken horniness.

Oh, no way. He's making money off the war and he's quite enjoying the position he's in. He turns Patriot if and only if the rebel side is assured of victory. -

It was said already, but yeah, at that age, kids lose teeth. I don't think this is a particular point that's a cheat per se. She was abducted. At that age, I had loose teeth all the time. Sarah has been frantically running around cloning and pwning nonstop since S2 started, so there probably wasn't time for the tooth fairy to visit. I do think it was important to confirm that the tooth came from Kira because last week there was speculation of its origin, so again, this seemed like a thought-out plot. This is good risk management on Sarah's part. Only Felix knows about Cal, and he doesn't know Cal's current whereabouts. The show made a point to have Sarah tell Mrs S that she isn't divulging Kira's whereabouts. Cal is off the grid as much as he can be and clearly said he's trying to maintain that. Plus, he's mobile. Not telling Cal the full story is harsh, but the right call. *If* he gets caught he literally can't say anything because he doesn't know anything. All he can say is Kira drew a picture of Sarah's sisters who all look the same. Whomever would have caught him presumably would know the existence of the clones anyway, so he literally carries zero intel on Sarah. As to why she thinks it's a good idea to take Kira to Cosima, I don't know. Maybe she is thinking that the teeth are a finite source, so maybe they can extract and maintain a larger supply of stem cells from Kira and Cosima would be better off. -

"I *may* have spiked the tea." Good for hero Kira. Everyone's so worried about her. Well, she's smart enough to understand what's going on! Did they have to film the Sarah/Alison scene (before Donnie walked in) in front of a mirror? I mean it is hard enough filming with the two clones, and then throw in a mirror. I saw Michelle Forbes in the credits. "Oh, I bet she'll be playing her usual goody two shoes character that she always plays." She played *exactly* who I thought she would. I would too. And she would say no. But, I have a PhD too, so we still would have a lot to talk about and she'd invite me to tea after lunch. It would work out. No, this would be the 'big reveal' at the end of the season for Sarah. We'd have been hit over the head with it for hours at a time. This is really the kind of show that's a runaway train and a longer episode season just wouldn't work. Sarah's really a shark. She does not stop. In hindsight, this was well-knit together. This was the only thing about last season that I was rolling my eyes about at the end because I wasn't buying that Donnie was a "monitor" like Paul-monitor. I didn't buy that he was playing this buffoon. Turns out he wasn't. Another point to TPTB for actually having a plan in place. Oh, you mean if I actually pay attention to details and watch the show closely, I'll actually be rewarded with a plot paying off. Imagine that! Although there were some wacky bits to this episode, I actually thought they were necessary. This has been a heavy season. And, it really turned on a dime. Kudos to KB. When Alison bitched out Donnie for being so stupid and stormed out, he got *sinister*. -
Probably not, but she was with someone who was in charge and she did have the pardon on her, so I'm ok with it.

Ok, hearing DD say, "I don't know the rules of tv, but I think you're supposed to milk the sexual tension as long as inhumanly possible" was funny. How is Hank a producer? When was this said? If he was mentally ill, then it could have been an interesting plot. But yeah, he's also a brat and an asshole. That's different then being socially awkward and introverted. He's had shitty parenting so far, so it's not all on him, but at some point, you're an adult, and you're expected to function appropriately in society. If you can't, then you need to seek professional help. I mean, he must have gone to high school, so it's not like he hasn't been around people his own age. Shouldn't he have friends? Why isn't he in an acting class? I think Hank wouldn't have a problem paying for it. I don't think it's wrong that Runkle and Marcy get horny over the idea of her banging other guys. So what? I don't have a problem with Hank having sex with whomever, but who is he to decide what's fucked up or not? I have to laugh also at all the women hitting on Hank. Seriously, who wouldn't like that? It happening constantly is silly, and everything being Hank's fault is stupid at this point. Everyone is behaving like they're in 7th grade. He turned down the women who practically threw themselves at him, and sorry Rath, there's no laws against two consenting adults having sex just because you like one of them. I assume Karen getting in the car accident is also Hank's fault. A car accident, really? A little hacked, no? It's taking too much work to watch this show, but I have to play the string out.
-
I'm surprised Hank actually said to Karen "I didn't do anything wrong." I can't get past any of this Hank as a tv writer bs. He's a real writer. Published, multiple-ly. Critically acclaimed. *Everything* about these plots is contrived. I actually find Rath (Christufuh!) to be a good character, but just not used correctly. I thought it was interesting that Hank pointed out that he didn't take a paternity test again, and that he's only going on what Julia says. I like how Hank did call Julia out though; honey, every man is going to want to fuck you. Seriously.

It's not the song, it's the scene. It's a cheap writing hack used in teen soaps. Abe dumped the woman he really wanted to marry because he doesn't have the sack to oppose his Tory father, and now he's a spy and can't tell his real wife who he's not that into anyway. That's fine. It's not the most interesting thing about the show, but it portrays Abe in a certain way. Obviously, he and Anna going away to NYC was going to end up with them fucking. And that's fine too. But TPTBs chose to do it in the most trite cliched way that they could. I swear, tv people know nothing about tv and just do things because They Are Things You Do. They took an otherwise very engaging episode of television with quite an interesting reveal, and very moving monologue and ended it in the worst way possible.
-
Let's have more of this. Spy Things. Precarious Situations. Pissed Off Anna. I like how Anna went all in once she found the husband was dead. I assume the book Abe copied is their codes. So they have like the Enigma Machine. Which should be cool if they decode something bad is going to happen but has to let it happen, like irl in WWII. And good job Abe for getting an invite their and realizing it would be a huge chance for some intel. He should have made a plan with Anna so they could get more. But she was all Revenge! And wasn't thinking clearly. What's with the song at the end? Is this the CW? Come on. Do not care. Everything but that was good.

But the Byron plot wasn't intended to be so substantive as part of S5. I swear JMS said all his notes for S5 were lost and the plot he remembered the most was this one.

One's former martial status and whether they have kids doesn't preclude his choice of relationships, however. -
It was funny because everyone one else was basically, 'who the fuck are you? and why do you think you have an equal say in what's going on? Your daughter is a vampire too? Because I thought you were just hiding from your daddy.' The look on Vanessa was priceless. I mean, Ethan comes in basically begging for a job because he needs money for his whore girlfriend and he doesn't care what the job is, but now all of a sudden he thinks he can dictate what they're going to do. This is a good, B horror series. It's *great* and it's *fun*. I'm not taking it too seriously, and it seems like the actors are having a lot of fun with it too. It's like everything on tv now has to be True Detective or Game of Thrones, which I like too. I'm glad there's room for fun, weird shows. It's not going to matter anyway because it seems like the kid is going to escape to me.
-
It's a touch too much for me with all the Frankenstein screentime in E2 and E3. I hope now that they got his side plot out of the way that we can move along the overall story a bit more. I did like how when Chandler was whining about 'torturing a child' Frankenstein was like, 'whatever Indian killer,' and the Vanessa immediately, 'stop being a pussy.' I'm still of the mind that the seance was Mina saying she saw Malcolm and Vanessa fucking because the vampire boy called her a cocksucker. I'm surprised there wasn't much fallout from the seance. I assume we're going to have to meet a van Helsing?

It's amazing how television people can fuck up actual drama. Think of the pitch meeting. "Our show is about the first spy ring in the Revolutionary War." Sold. I must have said 100s of times, TPTBs need to get the hell out of the way and let a show just show. -
I wouldn't be surprised if she was the one requesting all the takes.
-
First of all, no one is ever going to accuse Eva Green of half assing anything. That seance was balls to the wall. Did she piss on the table at the end? When she was arching her back so much it looked like in the reflection she was pissing. Which I wouldn't put it past EG to actually do it. Second of all, Eva Green should come over to my house and say 'fuck' and 'cunt' like all the time. I loved how she was spitting them out. It didn't even occur to me that Vanessa was saying that Malcolm and Mina were fucking. I thought Vanessa-as-Mina was saying she (Mina) used to watch Malcolm and Vanessa fucking. Me: "Look at this guy with all the portraits like he's Dorian Gray." "I'm Dorian Gray." HA! It's too bad to see Mr. Proteus go, but I mean in the book, it's Frankenstein's monster, so we got this one now. Didn't he run away in the book too? All this Book of the Dead stuff is cool. I like how the dandy Egypt guy was flipping out when he was studying the pictures.

I haven't seen this episode, but in the episode where Karen found out, she wasn't actually mad at Hank for Levon. She said she was mad because there was someone else before her. Which is kind of worse. Why would Karen even want to get back with Hank? She leads him around by the nose, accepts no responsibility for anything, and gets away with it. If Becca did something stupid, it was Hank's fault. If she's with Hank, he's going to expect her to put in work in their relationship and she's never done that before, so why start now? I don't get what this show is. I've been hit over the head that these two people just aren't right for one another. When the show started, they seemed on friendly terms and were sharing parenting of Becca, while Karen was getting married to Bill. Then she flaked and bailed. Since then she's really done nothing. She's not going to get into another relationship because Hank is the only person who thinks she shits strawberry ice cream and a real man will call her on her P-A BS and expect her to act like an adult. So this is how it is? They just circle one another's orbits for the next 50 years?

S02.E06: To Hound Nature in Her Wanderings

Not that I'm anything great, but I recall when people were going on and on about Lost and I remember saying, 'you do realize they're making this all up right? It's never going all add up.' 'No no no no, the numbers and maxwell's equations!" I mean, I watched the show and had fun with it, but I didn't worry about the details of anything. You look at just the handful of episodes here with OB and there is clear direction and focus. I think Art is kind of the show bible. Just looking at him alone, he's got all the pieces laid out. I feel like I'm being rewarded for paying close attention to the show. That's all I really want. -
S02.E06: To Hound Nature in Her Wanderings
ganesh replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in Orphan Black [V]
I said something similar to myself last night. On a shittier show with no direction, Sarah meeting Duncan would have been filled with cryptic answers and really nothing of substance. The face that we already know there was a fire and a lot was destroyed, then how they wanted a baby, etc., it's very detailed and focused, so I was like "ok then." Even with a 'crytpic' character like Mrs S, we're still being *shown* things about her that's letting us know what her background is, what she knows, etc. Here's a tip for new tv viewers into genre shows: If there's lot of cryptic dialogue that could mean anything, then don't invest all your time in a show. TPTBs have no idea where they are going and the end result is *always* going to disappointing. Be wary of anyone involved running a show who talks about the 'journey' over 'story'!
