S10.E03: The Dependence Transcendence
needschocolate replied to TheOtherOne's topic in The Big Bang Theory [V]
Of course, Sheldon was sleep deprived and going through "Withdrawals" when he admitted not knowing something and blaming himself for the trouble they were in, so they can easily have Sheldon go back to being his obnoxious know-it-all self next episode. Because... It doesn't have to be this way, but most sitcom characters don't show a lot of growth over the course of the series. Lucy was still getting herself into trouble with her crazy plans and Ricky was still yelling at her for it when I Love Lucy came to an end, and Lucille Ball continued playing a very similar character in every series sh made afterwards. BBT is like the vast majority of sitcoms in that each of the characters has his/her trait. What has helped this show succeed is that most of the characters have more than one trait - Sheldon is is obnoxious, a know-it-all, a chicken, blunt, childlike, etc... The problem lies when one trait takes over and gets blown out of proportion. I think they were in danger of this happening with Sheldon a season or two ago when he was so obnoxious all the time that he was just mean. Being a supporting character, Bernie has never had a lot of traits and now the only one we ever see is her being angry and hurtful. They are treading very close to her becoming a caricature of her former self. -

I could see using the magnet thing for displaying kids' artwork, and I could see babies swallowing or choking on those little magnets. The Ice Age guy's offer was so out of whack that I thought he didn't an offer, he just wanted free advertising. I don't like the "take it now or I am out" bullying either. The only times i am willing to overlook it is when the shark offers exactly what was asked and the others, who had enough time to make offers, start asking a bunch of questions and showing interest. It doesn't usually happen that way. And they are so random about it. Sometimes they want a decision instantly, and other times the pitchman asks if it is okay to hear fromthe others and they have no problem waiting. Yeah, but you have to bring how a few fish every once and a while or your spouse may start suspecting that you are having an affair. I turned to my husband and said, I wouldn't take fashion advice from that guy. It looked like he was trying to prove you could use the lapels to make your bar mitzvah suit look good by actually wearing the suit he wore to his bar mitzvah (disclaimer, I don't know if he is Jewish, but it looked a the right size for him when he was about 13). Do most high school boys own a suit to attach the lapels to? I would think there would be a market at tux rentals places - customize the tux you are renting . -
I vaguely remember them teaching sausage making on one of the regular seasons of Worst Cooks, too. In the decades that I and all of my friends have been cooking, I only know of one instance that someone made their own sausage. I think the only reason why they do the sausage making is for the jokes they can make about it.

I don't like Cornelius, I didn't think his dress looks anything special until daylight, I thought the emojis were immature, poorly drawn, and oddly placed, but I really like the way that the fabric looked white in daylight and al theise colors showed up in blacklight. How did he get that to happen? When they were explaining the challenge, I expected/hoped to see more designs where the fabric looked completely different under blacklight. Instead, we got a bunch of dresses that looked the same, just glowed. This gave me an idea - I am going to play a little game with myself anytime I am forced to watch commercials (I mean if I am watching a show live, not that someone would strap me to a chair and force me to watch the commercials) - for each commercial I will try to figure out a way PR could turn it into a challenge, and, to make it tougher, I can only have one unconventional challenge each commercial break. iPhone commercial - design a dress that has a recharger attached to it, Ragu commercial - design a dress that will hide a spaghetti sauce stain, Trojan commercial - design a chastity belt, etc.. And what is the big deal about lenses that get darker in sunlight? My mom had those decades ago. I swear the show amplifies her laugh, because every time sh laughs, all other sounds fade away and her laugh is the only sound you hear, unfortunately.

I noticed this show was on my DVR and finally watched it. I thought beaver and emails were obvious, and was surprised no one said them. I think there must be a better answer to the football question than the ones given, but haven't thought of one. Huge pet peeve of mine, too. When my kids were small, there was a lot of talk (parenting books and magazines, talk shows) on how important it was to teach your children the proper names for body parts. The most often cited reason was so they could properly describe what happened if they were ever molested. It was easy for boys, not so for girls. I knew a lot of moms who taught their daughters that their genitals were their vagina. All these little girls thinking they peed out of their vaginas. I would used "vulva" with my daughters but our best friends had just bought a Volvo and I thought there would be confusion and way too much snickering every time someone mentioned the car. Instead, we gave it a cutesy name, but I explained that, just like your hand has different parts, that area has different parts, too. (Also explained that their tummies have different parts so they would know that you don't grow a baby in your stomach).

TDS 3.0: Season One Talk

Does the North Carolina law state that it is okay to refuse service to gay people specifically or does it just say it is okay to refuse service to anyone you want to refuse it to? If it is the latter, I think it would have been interesting if they refused to sell to people based on things people had no control over - "Sorry sir, but you are left handed. We don't serve lefties." "My you have pretty blue eyes. But we don't serve blue eyed people. It's the Devil's eye color." "What church do you go to?...Oh, we don't serve Baptists." -
I watched the first episode and have only watched about half of the second episode - I am not sure I will stick with it. I get that parents with special needs children have to be pretty militant at times and often have to fight to get what they think is best for their child. I also get that this is a comedy and that comedies generally exaggerate characteristics. But this is also a "groundbreaking" show - a comedy about a family with a special needs child, which, unfortunately, means that it is also giving those who don't know any special needs families an idea of what life is like for them. My problem isn't so much how over the top the mom is, although she is, perhaps, too extreme, it is that they play up her obnoxiousness with the comments. They refer to her as though she is the worlds biggest bitch and the husband makes it sound like he puts up with her because is it easier than risking her wrath. They take pride in how horrible she is to be around, and now they take pride in how horrible they are as neighbors. You can have a sitcom about life as a special needs family and you can have a sitcom about life as a a family of horrible people (Married with Children and, to some extent, Roseanne treaded those waters, as have others) but it shouldn't be both when it is the is probably the first exposure that many viewers have to special needs families. It is a bad first impression.

I don't think Desi mentioned it, but Hillary's false moment was Trump saying that Hillary calling NAFTA the "gold standard" and she said she didn't, but that she hoped it would be good - but she had actually used the term "Gold Standard" to describe it. PErhaps it was initially in the segment, but was cut. I am glad Trevor mentioned how Trump is taking on the characteristics that he had accused his opponents of, but I think they got it a bit backwards. Trump accuses people of "crimes" or call them names that could be applied to him. It is a farily common tactic of bullies - this way, those accusations or names can't be appleid to the bully without making the other person look like they are defensive or copying. For instance, Trump accused HC of doing/saying things just to attract the minority vote and that she doesn't actually care about them. But Trumps suddenly "reaching out" to minorities was so tranparently pandering for votes, but now HC can't really come out and say he was just trying to get votes. -
Boy am I dense! I didn't see the twist coming. I didn't even know what the twist was till I read it here. I didn't even know there was supposed to be a twist (I suppose that is my defense for not figuring it out). I watched the show, but not all in one sitting and I was doing other things at the same time (defending my denseness some more). I knew from the commercials ("You have two healthy children") that they would lose one of the triplets. I thought it was about 4 people who were born on the same day and how their lives were different, yet intertwined - although, I didn't see any intertwining, other than two of them being related. I thought the acting was good and the storylines seemed promising, until they got to the end and then it got stupid - firemen smoking in hospitals and hospitals handing off babies to whomever raises their hand ans says "I'll take him" first. I thought the whole black baby abandoned at a fire station being repeated 36 years later was rather cotnrived. I was wondering if I should bother with the second episode and decided to check the forums - was this show going to be like Wayward Pines or Under the Dome, where the forums become hilarious with everyone making fun of the show? And immediately, people are talking about the twist. I am still dense enough to be thinking that everyone thinks that the show having a man who was abandoned at a fire station 36 years ago and was adopted and then a baby is abandoned at a fire station and is adopted is some sort of "twist." It still didn't dawn on me that the couple having the baby were the parents of the other three people turning 36. But it has now sunk in and I think I will watch the second episode, this could be interesting. However, and maybe this is because I watched this episode from a different angle, I can go along with the notion that smoking would be allowed in a hospital in 1980, but I still think it is very unlikely that the new parents would be allowed to adopt the abandoned baby. I used to babysit for a family that adopted a baby in the early 1980's and they waiting months (maybe years) to adopt their baby, there should have been other couples ahead of them on a list somewhere. And, even if I go along with the idea that there was no one else wanting to adopt, it is very doubtful that social services would give this baby to new parents of twins, and certainly not so soon after the birth. But I may be willing to overlook this if the show ends up being really good.

Must be that Twin Power at work -
My three kids have never really fit the oldest/middle/youngest stereotypes, so I don't think I would enjoy the different birth orders discussing how their place in the family makes them better at Survivor just like I don't enjoy hearing the current cast discuss how being in their generation makes them better. However, I cannot imagine any cast division that would make me want to listen to them talk about how their stereotype makes them better. I don't know if they would ever do a birth order division because it may be too similar to the "collars" division. The Collars season also makes dividing tribes by income unlikely. I do think that, if the show stays on tv long enough, there will be a season where teams are divided by where they were born (southerners vs Northeasterners vs West Coasters vs Midwesterners - or - Urban vs Suburban vs Rural).

I will reply here, because I doubt the new show will get enough viewers to warrant getting their own forum.. I got the feeling that FN is targeting people who used to love watching Cake Boss. Although Vinnie's mom seems less obnoxious than the women on Cake Boss, I think she isn't as witty, endearing, or charming as FN thinks she is. I am not buying their premise at all - that Mama has lived such a sheltered life that she has only eaten italian food her entire life. -

It makes me feel better - or halfway better, anyway. According to the article, Facebook counts any video that plays for three seconds as a view. which means you need to be pretty fast on the pause button if you don't want it to count as a view. Youtube requires that video is played most of the way. -

Wasn't it lovely of FN to air this crappy half-season so that we won't miss the show when it gets cancelled. I agree that a grilled cheese sandwich is not the quickest breakfast you could make, but my daughter's method doesn't take much longer than a toaster waffle - she toasts to pieces of bread in the toaster, then puts cheese in between and microwaves it until the cheese melts. Not as good as a real grilled cheese sandwich, but it is an okay substitute. On the other hand, the bar owner may have thought that having a food truck that was part of a tv show might attract a lot of people to come out in 108 degree heat and then decide that they want to go into the air-conditioned bar. -

And then there all all the people who watch it more than once. a million views doesn't mean a million people watched and certainly doesn't mean that a milion people agree. Counting "likes" makes more sense than counting views. I have wondered if it counts as a "view" if the video starts automatically.. Say one of your "friends" "likes" her video, which then puts it in your newsfeed and when you scroll past it, the video starts automatically. The squirrel with the abacus tallying all the views doesn't know if the video is just playing or if someone is actually watching it. -
For the year of birth to make a difference, they would need to put more space between the years. For instance, a tribe made up of people who that lived through the great depreciation vs a tribe of people were born after, say, 1985. But there would be a plethora of reasons why I wouldn't want to watch a tribe of 80 and 90 year olds, and the talk of "our work ethic or life style is so much better than theirs" would be through the roof. I still think the main reason why we have these silly labels is because they no longer name seasons after the locations, then they do their darnedest to sell us on the idea that the labels make a difference, until they shuffle the tribes then the labels fizzle out.

According to some sites, Gen X is those born between 1961 and 1981 (most just say "early 1960s to early 1980s"). Boomers are 1946-1964. So there is some overlap and, being born in 1962, I am one of the overlappers. I have to say though, that I don't identify with either group. I was too young to remember JFK being shot or grow up watching Howdy Doody, but I am too old for Kurt Coabin's death to have an impact on me (I already had 2 kids by the time Nirvana released their first album). I think I will like this season because they will eventually stop making such a fuss about generation generalizations and because I always end up liking the season. The fist part of the season is usually a bit dull, but I feel that, if you suffer through the early episodes, you get more enjoyment out of what happens later on.

Either I wasn't paying as much attention as I thought I was or the editing was bad this episode. Did they give any rational as to why Cici was the back-up vote? I can easily convince myself that it was because she is an older female (that sort of targeting happens early on quite often), but did we ever hear anyone speak of voting for Cici? And why did they split the vote? I know they thought Dave might have found an idol, but I don't remember anyone being concerned that Rachel had found one. (Hope I am getting these names right). I suppose that, since they don't change the location every season anymore, they have to come up with some way to identify the season. But this theme seems more contrived than others and didn't we already do this generation thing before? I guess they are running out of ideas - Survivor: Lefties vs Righties or Survivor: Carnivores vs Vegans don't seem very interesting. Using locations in the title didn't help me remember which season was which, but using the themes has helped a little bit. Still, I would be fine with doing away with the naming of the season, if they just called it Survivor without the theme/location, then my DVR would automatically record it and I wouldn't have to set up a new recording every season (first world problem). I hadn't thought about there only being one until you mentioned it, but it does make sense to only have one, because the advantage doesn't happen until day 36, long after the merge and there are only a handful of people left.

I think the media can take at least some of the blame for this. Too much time spent trying to be "hip" and "cool" and "trendy" - making their newcasts more like Facebook/Twitter/Instagram. Reporters seem to concentrate on the "fluff" and when they do ask a a more "hard-hitting" question, they don't listen to the answer carefully and ask more questions (digging deeper), they just keep going down their list of questions. When you feel that a fake newscast on a Comedy station has more in depth coverage of the issues than the actual news stations do, there is something wrong with the media.- 1.9k replies

I am generally not of fan of comedians who laugh at their own jokes. I don't mind a smile or a little chuckle after a particularly good joke in a stand-up act while the audience is laughing, but giggling throughout a joke is annoys me. TDS isn't a stand up comedy act, it is supposed to be a fake newscast, so Michelle's giggling makes me want to change the channel. -
S07.E03: Family Face-Off: An Egg-cellent Adventure
needschocolate replied to xaxat's topic in The Great Food Truck Race [V]
I took it as a sign that the show isn't rigged when the top selling truck also wins the immunity and Southern Soul just missed getting immunity and then ended up going home. It would have been more "drama" if SS would have been saved by winning immunity and the cheese boys went home. You never know what you may need to run a food truck. One day, I was trying to find a good location to set up my food truck. I decided to veer off the highway and head down a little dirt road. The road was narrow and rough as though it had only been used horses centuries ago. It was too narrow to turn my truck around and I was forced to continue into the dark forest. After traveling for a couple of days, I happened upon a small village that looked like it was forgotten by time. Their were no cars, no cell towers, no sign of the 20th century (and certainly no sign of the 21st). However, the people were friendly and very interested in my food truck. I thought "wow, I just found the best place to sell" as the entire town gathered around. I needed eggs to make the batter for my southern style grilled cheese funnel cakes. However, there were no grocery stores around. Fortunately the local ostrich farmer was able to hook me up with a couple of eggs. Just as I was ready to start cooking, I broke my funnel cake squirter. A town without a grocery store, certainly isn't going to have a carnival supply store. I tried to explain what I needed, but no one in town had ever seen a funnel cake. My dream of finally hitting it big was fading until one of the townsfolk graciously handed me an odd-shaped pan - it had all these dents in it. They called it an aebleskiver pan. I drilled holes in the bottom of each little cup and was able to make multiple funnel cakes at the same time. I sold more that day that I normally sell in a week and ended up with 4 pounds of beads, 2 goats, 8 gerbils, 16 bushels of rutabagas, and 3 bags of magic beans. I was finaly able to turn my truck around and headed back into the forest in search of a town that uses money.- 20 replies

Food Network Star Kids All Episode Talk

I could easily go the rest of my life without ever hearing "Fleek" and I would not miss it. My impression is that the cell phone thing is a gimmick by the producers to show that the show is trendy (I will not use that other word) and in touch with the youth of America. If they ever do a teen version of this show, we will probably be subjected to a hailstorm of hashtags. -
It was in color and the set-up looked the same - three on the top row, three on the bottom. There were other things that made it look like an alternate reality Match Game - Brett was sitting in the bottom row (left corner), Gene didn't have his trademark long, thin mic (I remember watching the show as a kid and seeing the episode where Gene made a talked about his new long thin mic, so I am not really surprised that he didn't have it in the beginning, it just seemed odd to not see it)

The Jim Gaffigan Show - General Discussion
needschocolate replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Jim Gaffigan Show
I have discovered that I can get out on any invitation by saying, "Sorry, I can't make it. I have other plans that day." They don't need to know that my other plans are to empty my dishwasher, or watch reruns, or buy milk. Anything can be a "plan." Fortunately, most of my friends don't bother asking what my plans are, but if they do, I give a general response, like "Oh, there are too many things to list. It is just a busy time of year." I think there is a similar excuse making technique in show business. Most parents believe they want to spend more time with their families. So, instead of saying that you are ending the show because ratings aren't as high as expected (making you look unsuccessful), or the network doesn't want to pay you as much as you want (making you look greedy), you just say that you want to spend more time with your family. -
It made some sense when they had to protect Mike because they didn't want the secret out and bring down the firm. But now the secret is out and the firm has been brought down, so why do they care so much about Mike that they will drop everything to "do it for Mike"? they haven't made him so likeable for everyone to love him so much. I can understand Rachel caring, and perhaps Harvey (Mike is his only friend, or because he feels some guilt that Mike is in prison and he got away with the whole fraud thing). They haven't really shown us any reason why Jessica cares so much about what happens to Mike, although they did, sort of, have her, kind of, tell Harvey that he should put the firm before Mike, in a way. Actually, I don't understand why Jessica cares about Harvey. I agree. Maybe do an episode about most everybody leaving the firm and a montage of what Harvey, Jessica, Louis (those three would be out getting clients - maybe one wins a prominent case and gives the firm a boost), Rachel (finishes law school and passes the bar), and Donna (maybe 20 seconds of her saying "because I'm Donna as many times as she can) did for the next two years, then the second episode of the season would be Mike getting out. He goes to work for the new firm as a paralegal and they actually have cases, and the biggest secret is "Who is Harvey/Louis/Jessica dating?" or "How can Donna afford that dress?"
