  1. I think, if I recall correctly, that he said he was at some kind of (awards?) banquet in New Jersey when he was called in. I just recalled it being kind of weird that instead of diving head-first into the news, he took time to tell us about where he's been and how he got caught up on the radio on the way in.
  2. Oh, Jesus. I took a one-hour break and Williams had toned down the JFK. Now I'm back, and he's going full force on the JFK.
  3. So, here are our options: 1. Brian Williams and his constant references to JFK. 2. Don Lemon on CNN. 3. Fox News. Dang.
  4. Random question: They screened this in theaters in May to make it eligible for Oscar consideration. Does that make it ineligible for Emmy consideration? I mean, many Oscar-worthy movie documentaries are screened on TV, anyway, and they aren't considered for Emmy nominations. But does this officially being a (very long) theatrical movie make it not officially a TV series? EDITED TO ADD: I found the answer. Yes, it's eligible for Emmy and Oscar consideration under a specific TV Academy rule.
  5. There are a lot of people given vague descriptions, who were famous from my perspective as an Angeleno. Like Mark Ridley-Thomas, whom it took forever to name him as a former City Councilman. But they don't want to, I guess, muddle the narrative. Like Bernard Parks, the black guy early on who is listed early on as "LAPD 1965-2002," became LAPD chief 2 years after the O.J. verdict. Then he became a City Councilman. But you probably don't want to go into too much detail. Zoey/Bob Tur was a legendary TV pilot when I was growing up. I was actually shocked that he grew up in Brentwood. I mean, this guy captured the Regindal Denny beating, the first to capture O.J. in the Bronco AND he grew up in Brentwood? Wow. Incidentally, her daughter is Katy Tur, who covers the Donald Trump campaign for NBC News and whom Trump likes to mock. And here's the tangential ESPN connection: Katy Tur used to date the much-older Keith Olbermann.
  6. I was in junior high school at the time of the L.A. riots, and Johnnie Cochran's law offices were across the street. For those familiar with L.A., Cochran's law offices were/are* at the corner of Highland and Wilshire, just a few miles above South Central. (*The Cochran Group is still in the same location.) There were a lot of Korean-American students at my junior high. There were a lot of black students. There was just a lot of immense dislike between blacks and Koreans because a lot of Koreans owned liquor stores in predominantly black neighborhoods and their was immense amount of racism. I am half-Asian and half-white, yet I looked Latino as a teenager. And whenever I walked into Korean-owned 7-Elevens, I'd get followed around. They'd ask to check my pockets. I'd always be accused of stealing. Quite honestly, at the time I felt a certain kind of satisfaction seeing the scared Korean store owners with their guns. The dislike between Korean store owners and blacks was portrayed in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing?
  7. Let me Zapruder this for ya! Someone in another thread wondered if they drive in circles. Yes, they do! But James Corden had a 60- to 90-minute interview last week with Howard Stern. If you can find it, I urge you to listen. He goes into detail about how he tapes this. Like, yes, they have a ton of footage. He also came off really great. I mean, I had a whole new appreciation for him. Anyways, as I mentioned above, Flea and Anthony Kiedis met at age 15 at Fairfax High School near Corden's studio. The red represents CBS Television City, home to The Late Late Show (and Dancing with the Stars, The Price is Right, Bill Maher and, until last month, American Idol. The blue represents Fairfax High. 1. The video begins farther east down Melrose, driving past the Groundlings where RHCP's drummer's doppelganger Will Ferrell got his start. 2. At 3:30, I can see Fairfax High, which is front-facing Melrose, in the background. You can see Fairfax's red fences in the background. 3. At 8:30, they are traveling down Melrose about 4-5 blocks East of Fairfax High. 4. At 9:54, they are traveling northbound up Fairfax and *away* from Corden's studio. (The "4" should be 2 blocks down. I made a mistake.) Yup, they aren't really doing a carpool to work thing. 5. At 9:37, (seconds before "4") they are in front of Fairfax High again (you can see the red fences in the background) singing another song. The wrestling, I think took place on Highland Avenue, which is a semi-busy street in a residential area about 1 mile east of Fairfax. Another fun fact: The RHCP's 1987 music video Fight Like a Brave was filmed on Melrose (using green-screen?). http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4thl_red-hot-chili-peppers-fight-like-a_music
  8. I was wondering what happened to him. I watched MSNBC's contuing live coverage through 2 pm ET, when Obama spoke. And Williams wasn't there. It had been nearly 4 hours since the 50 death toll had been announced, and at least six hours since they initially said it was 20. I wonder why he wasn't there. Maybe Hamptons traffic?
  9. I love Maddow's show. It's one of the shows I look forward to the most each night. But the past month, I've been away from my TV, in a place where I only have access (and broadcast TV only.) So I've had to rely on the Internet to watch the show. First off, MSNBC's web site is harrible. It's sluggish. The videos don't always load. The website, though, gets clips of the Maddow show first, leaving you to figure out in what order they aired. I like to watch the whole show in order, so I try to rely on the app. But the odd thing is MSNBC uploads every night's show, including Lawrence O'Donnell, long before they upload Maddow's show. As I type, it's nearly 12 hours since Maddow's show ended, and it's not availaable on the app. What gives? Why does it take so long? Welp, at least I get Maddow on The Last Word. Edited to add: It's now up, 30 minutes after this post.
  10. Oh, yes: The Red Hot Chili Peppers did a Carpool Karaoke. Why is that so significant? Because Flea and Anthony Kiedis met in 1977 at age 15 two blocks north of where James Corden's Late Late Show tapes, at Fairfax High School. (The original four Red Hot Chili Peppers, including the late guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons all attended Fairfax together.) I read Kiedis' biography and they used to wreak havoc in that neighborhood as teenagers. So it's gonna be pretty special, hopefully.
  11. I've watched MSNBC for most of Obama's presidency. I didn't really follow the 2008 election closely, but at some point early in Obama's term, I became a devoted watcher of the primetime slate, plus Chris Matthews. Before Bernie Sanders began running, I was unaware of him...I'm sure I heard his name before, but I don't remember him. There are many senators who stand out. You know their names...but he wasn't one of them. And that has mostly been my problem with him -- he seemed like an unremarkable senator, who glommed on to the Democrats as an alternative to Hillary. I was disappointed that somebody I'd never really heard of could get this far, though I'm glad he ran just because it would be bad for Clinton to cruise easily to victory.. It's kind of like us first hearing about Trevor Noah in late 2014 (unless you followed comedy closely, he was pretty much unknown) and him suddenly being named Jon Stewart's successor a few months later. Yes, I realize Obama was somebody who was somewhat new to the scene when he ran in 2008. That was probably why I was for Hillary then. (But I'm glad, in retrospect, that Obama won.) But at least we knew about Obama for 4 years. So here's my question for you MSNBC watchers: Was Bernie a frequent (or occasional) presence on MSNBC before last year? Or was I just watching the wrong shows?
  12. Wait -- I thought Bernie didn't become a Democrat until last year. Do the Democrats allow independents to become superdelegates?
  13. Corden was on Howard Stern this morning. He's going on Colbert tonight. He's on Live with Kelly on Tuesday and Seth Meyers, his "rival," on Wednesday. Yet he has all new shows Monday through Wednesday. I guess he spent lasdt week pretaping shows while he preps for the Tonys in NYC.
  14. You may recall that 2 years ago, Rachel devoted a segment to saying goodbye to her longtime executive producer, Bill Wolff, who created her MSNBC show. Wolff was hired as the new boss of The View, but he ended up having a disastrous year and was forced to resign last year. Soon after, it was announced that he'd become the executive producer of Chelsea Handler's Netflix show. Well, yesterday, three weeks after launching the Chelsea show, Wolff is out of a job again.
  15. I don't think it's a product of him being gay. (Here's his coming out story, by the way.) He also seems to be advancing the narrative that Trump has a chance to beat Hillary.. I think he's just trying to make it interesting, like the rest of the media. Kornacki, by the way, has been perhaps the person who has been leading the charge to debunk the "Perot Myth" -- that Perot cost Bush the 1992 election. In fact, he likes to defend Bill Clinton's legacy, especially over his gay-rights legacy. (I have no idea if this means he loves/hates Hillary.) Kornacki in 2007: http://observer.com/2007/06/not-a-spoiler-not-ross-perot/ Kornacki in 2011: http://www.salon.com/2011/04/04/third_party_myth_easterbrook/ Kornacki in 2015: http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/ross-perot-myth-reborn-amid-rumors-third-party-trump-candidacy
  16. I liked (loved?) Steve Kornacki. He got me through the 2012 campaign with his Salon columns that used a lot of history. I actually enjoyed him on TV. I didn't always watch Up!, but I thought he did a respectable job as a substitute host and guest. I even listened to his podcast , which he discontinued late last year, which was taped at a bar. Now? Now, I can't stand him. He's the boring wonky guy with the white spewing out numbers that I don't care about. Even his twitter has become boring.
  17. ok, had no idea Pete Davidson was dating Larry David's (hot) daughter. I've followed Davidson for years on Instagram, and he was madly in love with this pink-haired girl, seemingly only recently. But I noticed a couple times Cazzie David showing up on his feed (she'd accompany her dad this season to each SNL taping he'd appear on.) I never put two and two together. She'd appear on his Instragram feed a couple times, and he'd appear on hers a couple times. They're the same age (22). And if they get married, she could become Cazzie David-son.
  18. I listen to Marc Maron's WTF podcast and the Howard Stern show. Last Thursday, on Maron's podcast, he said that story, line for line. Then Tuesday, he repeated that story on Howard Stern, line for line. I'm so glad to stop hearing that story.
  19. Actually, it's been so long that I barely notice nowadays. I am actually shocked when I see old clean-shaven photos of him. My problem, I guess, was one of somebody changing their looks. All I ask for is consitency.
  20. On the one hand, it's kind of sweet that the N has a different person introduce each pick for Rounds 2 and 3. On the other hand, the introduction of that person plus the little speech they give takes time. And this thing seems like it's never going to end.
  21. Holy shit! Colbert started off with 3 members of The Good Wife cast: Then he interviewed Hank Azaria: Then he did a segment with Isaac Mizrahi: Then he interviewed Nike founder Phil Knight. Woah, woah, woah: Just because you could cram all these guests into a single one-hour show doesn't mean it's a good idea. Geez.
  22. I'm a Cal alum, so I'm biased for Jared Goff. This is what I remember most: Goff was the first true freshman since WWII to start on opening day, and it was against Northwestern. ESPN's Michael Wilbon, a Northwestern alum, was in attendance, and was genuinely pissed that an 18-year-old true freshman QB looked so good against Northwestern's defense (Goff would eventually not look that good, as Cal lost the game). But I saved Wilbon's tweetstorm for posterity. Goff would go on to start 36 more games. He later tweeted:
  23. Man, I hate these town hall nights, which I don't care for at all. I just want a normal Maddow show.
