  1. Deadspin did a really good job with the Manning story. http://deadspin.com/how-tennessee-s-sexual-harassment-allegations-caught-up-1759118435
  2. And Bob Odenkirk, who would go on to be part of Conan's first writing staff...good timing with Better Call Saul returning Monday. I started watching SNL around 1988, or 1987...when I was 9 or 10...So this brings back childhood memories. That episode felt so surreal..but the 1988 campaign is the first that I vividly remember, especially thanks to SNL.
  3. This is how brilliant the cold open was: Here's The Daily Beast's takeaway: "SNL Turns on Hillary Clinton, Mocks Her Likability Issues: Saturday Night Live feels the Bern for the second week in a row with this sad Hillary Clinton cold open." And here's Salon: "You love Bernie and brunch: “SNL” pokes Sanders-loving urban lefties"
  4. Jimmy Fallon killed it with his Bernie impression. Yeah, yeah, Fallon always kills it. But it made me think it could be done, and I believe Kyle Mooney can be the one to do it. Mooney looks like he sort of could be a 30-something version of Sanders. And all he'll have to do is get the accent right and look good. Larry David's impression was really just Larry David being Larry David as Bernie Sanders. There was a recent, article, though, about SNL outsourcing all its big impressions. One day it's going to become a problem. (By the way, it was Larry David's agent who called Lorne Michaels suggesting he should do Bernie Sanders.)
  5. It's usually a post-Super Bowl tradition for Letterman's Late Show to have somebody (usually the QB) from the Super Bowl winner on. (Last year, Letterman had on Patriots head coach Bill Belichick instead of Tom Brady.) Also, Peyton Manning has never been on any other talk show except Letterman's Late Show (he first visited Dave in 1997 and was on his final show last year). Yet, this year Super Bowl winner Peyton went on Fallon. The Super Bowl MVP, Von Miller, went on Corden. A few days later, three more Denver Broncos went on Corden. Tonight, SNL also had on Von Miller. Kimmel also had a player from the Broncos. Yet not a single person associated with the Broncos visited Colbert. I wonder why? Is it because Colbert isn't a football fan?
  6. Rachel was on twice. I tuned in around 3:30 or so, after reading on Twitter that she was commenting on the news. I was sorry that I missed her. But they brought her back on via phone.
  7. Friends is indeed old. But Friends and it stars are constantly in the news, from multiple Buzzfeed listsicles to Matthew Perry's new play bombing with critics to Matt LeBlanc getting a new show (Top Gear) to Matt LeBlanc getting a new show (on CBS) to Matt LeBlanc almost having a nervous breakdown after Friends to David Schwimmer sharing his thoughts on fame as he plays Robert Kardashian on The People v. O.J. to Courtney Cox landing a new show. All those links are from the past 10 days. Heck, the NY Times did a story in October about modern teens and Friends. Friends is never not relevant. Oh, and Vanessa Bayer's impression was fabulous, as was the cold open.
  8. Quayle was 41 and looked younger than his age. I think people felt he was picked because of his looks. If Marco Rubio is elected, he'll be the same age that Bill Clinton was when he was elected (and 1 year younger than Obama when he was elected). Yet Rubio -- who is 5 months younger than Ted Cruz -- is sometimes also mocked as kid-like because of his youthful looks, like this recent Conan sketch.
  9. Look: Favre deserved a 6-second decision. He was going to get in, he deserved to get in. Yeah, he holds the interception record. But he held a lot of amazing records, like the starting record and the most wins (as of the day he was voted in). Sure, he only won 1 Super Bowl. But Super Bowl is a team thing. Coaches like Tom Flores and George Seifert have each won two Super Bowls, and are no where near getting into the hall. I believe they started their 8 1/2 hour day with 15 candidates. If somebody is so obviously a hall of famer, then why spend an hour discussing him?
  10. What specifically did he and his teammates say? I don't recall any shit-talking.
  11. Really -- putting Manziel, McCoy and Newton in the same category!!?!? Sheesh! This reminds me of the outrage over Marshawn last year. Here's Peyton on Newton after the game: http://ftw.usatoday.com/2016/02/peyton-manning-says-cam-newton-was-humble-and-really-nice-after-super-bowl-loss (Again: Remember that Manning headed straight to the locker rooms after his first Super Bowl loss.)
  12. Re: Rachel and Hillary...I've nothing against Clinton's frequent appearances....It's just jarring for Hillary to totally ignore Rachel all these years to suddenly being on her show constantly. By the way, here's a great podcast interview with Rachel by Ezra Klein (I'm still listening to it.) http://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2016/2/9/10951090/rachel-maddow-ezra-klein
  13. Are you sure? He looks like the second coming of Brad Pitt to me!
  14. Is this really a thing? https://twitter.com/extratv/status/696828367941677056
  15. There is the theory that Cam was reacting negatively to hearing Chris Harris' comments... http://deadspin.com/did-cam-newton-leave-his-press-conference-because-he-co-1757780472 Cam looked genuinely happy for Peyton, based on the photos. (Cam won the Manning Award in college, and taped this funny bit with Peyton's older brother during the middle of the season.)
  16. Why isn't Manning getting raked over the coals for using this big moment of his career to shill for Papa John's and Budweiser*. (*Budweiser claims it didn't pay Peyton, but that was so odd for him to say...If he said Miller Lite for the MVP, that would be understandable.) I'm still debating whether to lose my Papa John's virginity. I've heard it's terrible, but can it really be that bad?
  17. Peyton is still in his 30s...at least for now. That's also something a 3-time Super Bowl MVP does, too. http://ftw.usatoday.com/2013/12/tom-brady-leaves-press-conference-expletive#
  18. --I thought I saw a CBS graphic in the final moments of the game showing that Peyton was a 2-time Super Bowl MVP. That's why I had assumed he won. --I walked by the recently opened Beast Mode store today. He just opened it a few days ago. Marshawn reportedly hasn't spent a dime of his playing salary. --Random halftime rant: I love some Coldplay songs. I'm not in love with them, but if you're going to name a headliner, stick with them and let them headline!!! I think that once you perform at the Super Bowl halftime, you should be done forever, or at least 10 years. Beyonce is great, but she was just here 3 years ago, and she's singing a just-released-yesterday song. I think Coldplay's set was hurt by 1) Being in daylight. which makes it less interesting and 2) being the third wheel, which limited the options to put together a complete 12 1/2 minute show. The trend in recent years is to have a special guest for the headliner (Red Hot Chilli Peppers (forced?) on Bruno Mars two years ago. Katy Perry with Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz last year. But the special guests shouldn't overshadow the performance.. I wonder if we'll ever get a Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift halftime show. Maybe when they're in their 50s, like Madonna. --I was really sad when Peyton lost six years ago and two years ago. Now I'm really just sick of him. I kind of hitched myself to the Panthers bandwagon early in the seasoin, watched nearly all their games, and am somewhat disappointed. Congrats Peyton and Papa John! --During all his years playing for my Cal Bears, C.J. Anderson was a backup. I don't think he ever started. And the guy who he backed up wasn't all that great. So it's been odd seeing him be so successful in the NFL. Anderson becomes the third Cal RB in a row to win a Super Bowl (after Marshawn Lynch and the Patriots (now Giants') Shane Vereen, who was also mostly a backup at Cal though he started his final season). --Did you know Reese Witherspoon is 2 days older than Peyton? My feelings exactly!!! --------------------------------------------------------------- Edited to add: I guess Cam-hating season has returned....I'll drink a Budweiser and watch.
  19. Every year, during the 30 minutes preceding the Super Bowl start, I do a Twitter search of "American football" to see Brits talk shit about our beloved sport. It's so fun....They also feel exactly how I feel about that boring game of soccer..
  20. Just realized something: Jim Nantz, who slobbers over Peyton, has called 3 of Peyton's 4 Super Bowls. It's like Manning makes it a point to get to the Super Bowl during CBS years.
  21. As I've complained before on here, the NFL Network used to announce the Hall of Famers at around 2 pm - 3 pm PT live, and you got to get the Hall of Famers' raw emotions. It was terrific if a little organized. They tape the NFL Honors at 5 pm PT, air at 6 pm PT on the East Coast, and then 9 pm PT on the West Coast. So instead of 2 to 3 pm, it's 'like 10 pm that I get to see the Hall of Famers on TV, and they're just standing there on stage for a few moments. This year, I just decided to avoid all social media (I was trying to avoid Twitter because of Larry David hosting SNL, too) By the way, about a week to 10 days ago our local media had all these headlines about the strong possibility that the El Nino storm would affect the Super Bowl. Well, today, it is freakin hot. Very, very hot. The sun won't go down until probably early into the 3rd quarter (5:35 pm PT), so we'll be getting a daylight halftime show. EDIT: It's odd to see Joe Buck and Al Michaels featured on the CBS pregame show.
  22. He should've said the "other Rodgers from Cal on the team." Anyways, Richard Rodgers' dad, Richard Sr., is an assitant coach for the Panthers. The senior Rodgers, who spoiled John Elway's chance to go to a bowl game in his senior season at Stanford by touchng the ball twice in the famous 1982 Cal-Stanford The Play, gets another chance today to help spoil Elway's day.
  23. I watched the beginning of the Super Bowl's best halftime shows. I think they spent more time documenting the behind the scenes of last week's Super Bowl halftime than the Halftime itself. Anyways, this year, much of the game will be played in sunlight. The halftime show will also happen before the sun goes down. (Game begins at 3:30, sun goes down around 5:35 pm.)
  24. Rachel is awesome! (And quite scary to certain people)...https://twitter.com/MaddowBlog/status/695731740963381250
