  1. whoa https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/inside-peyton-mannings-secret-investigation-into-al-jazeera-documentary/2016/02/04/d0da2f04-cb05-11e5-a7b2-5a2f824b02c9_story.html
  2. Samantha was profiled on CBS Sunday Morning, and she and other media outlets kept referering to her as a "late night host." http://www.cbsnews.com/news/samantha-bee-joins-the-late-night-boys-club/ I looked it up, and her show starts at 10:30 and ends at 11. Isn't that timeslot considered "primetime"? Sorry for being nitpicky. I had been wondering for months because they kept saying she was getting a "late-night show" on TBS. But Conan already occupies the 11 pm slot four days a week. So I thought it was either going to be on at midnight (which is not good) or Friday at 11 (also not good), or Saturday at 11 (also not good, though it could kind of be an SNL lead-in) or Sunday (not good because of John Oliver. So her show is on at 10:30 pm. And it's in primetime. Yet she's being called a "late-night host."
  3. Because Media Day has become a much talked about event, so why should they keep airing in the middle of the day or early morning when people are working? Why not move it to primetime? It makes sense. (Especially as an alternative to the Iowa caucuses and The Bachelor.) And instead of it taking place 5 days before the game, it's 6 days in advance. So everybody quickly can be done with it. The Super Bowl is a spectacle, and so is media day. I love media day -- well, I would love it if the NFL Network didn't suck so much at covering it. I want to hear the questions and answers of "reporters" and the players, but NFL Network will mostly show "Prime" asking players stupid questions. Then they're going to go to Rich Eisen and his gang "analyzing" what's going on at Media Day while not actually showing what's going on. They spend so much time discussing and analyzing I wish they could show the sights and sounds for a couple hours and shut up.
  4. How long is this post-Super Bowl special? How will he first all these people into one show? --Megyn Kelly --Tina Fey --Margot Robbie --Key and Peele --Will Ferrell
  5. Nope. They return next year. They just didn't want to go with "Super Bowl L" because of the negative connotations. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/01/27/nfl-to-go-back-to-roman-numerals-after-super-bowl-l/ --I looked forward to the Pro Bowl. I DVR'd it, but got bored after 1 quarter. If Eli Manning couldn't make it to the end of the 1st quarter, then I wasn't going to watch anymore...so I switched to Grease Live. --I DVR'd the Panthers arriving at the airport. I'm rooting for the Panthers because Ron Rivera has been so devoted to our shared alma mater, where he met his wife at a yogurt shop. And Super Bowl statue update: The one near the Full House house, the one that was destroyed as "Superb Owl," has been removed after it was converted to "Oops." http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Super-Bowl-Committee-gives-up-takes-back-statue-6797054.php
  6. I recall Colbert telling Howard Stern in August that he would at first try out the five-day-a-week schedule through the end of 2015, and maybe do the Letterman thing afterwards. Only he and Fallon, of all the late-night hosts, do Friday shows, which I find unneccessary since Friday nights are part of the weekend. And everybody is in weekend mode. But Colbert has tried doing different things on Friday nights. Previously, he brought out his friend for some couch game.
  7. If all goes as expected, SNL will have 2 40-something cast members by this time next year.
  8. So I visited Super Bowl City yesterday. It was super crowded, but really not all that interesting. Just a lot of activity stuff to do with the kids, long lines to wait for an NFL player you never heard of, and lots and lots of sponsors. (There is a separate event called the "NFL Experience" featuring the Super Bowl trophy and every Super Bowl ring, but that costs $35. Super Bowl City, on the other hand, is free (after you go through the metal detectors). Here are some pics (apologies in advance for the long post. The Super Bowl City volunteers were dressed in Broncos color(s) for some reason. I saw a lot (but not too many) people in Cam Newton jerseys. But mostly people were sporting their 49ers clothing. The 100-year-old Ferry Building has had the "50" on it for the last 2 months. This building is about a mile from Super Bowl City. This building is about 2 miles away. That banner is really long. This is the now-repaired "Sup Bro" statue thingee. When I went by there a busload of Asian tourists were surrounding it. The Riot Police blocked the main approach to Super Bowl City in response to a major protest. So everybody had to take a circuitous longer route via the side. These kiosks were all over Market Street.
  9. Apparently there was no episode Friday. The late-night lineup page shows no show. And the Laet Show's Twitter account, which recently has attempted to be funny by live-tweeting each epsiode, didn't live-tweet anything last night. I also read (I think via the Twitter account) that they're taping two shows on Thursday next week. Perhaps Colbert took the day off because he'll be doing six shows the week after next.
  10. Here's USA Today's ranking of all Super Bowls. http://ftw.usatoday.com/2016/01/best-super-bowl-team-winner-ranking-best-nfl-team-ever-super-bowl-50-redskins-49ers-cowboys-packers-patriots Here in the Bay Area people like to protest, and I've been wondering how protesters are going to disrupt the festivities (a few weeks ago on MLK Day, protestesrs parked their cars and chained themselves to the Bay Bridge). Well, it looks like when I visit Super Bowl City tomorrow, there will be an influx of people protesting a police shooting. THat'll be the beginning.
  11. I'm so excited: On Saturday I'm going to walk 20 minutes to my local BART station in Oakland and take the 20-minute subway ride to Super Bowl City in San Francisco. Thankfully, I'm unaffected by Super Bowl Week(s)...meanwhile, San Franciscans have faced gridlock all week (they shut down a key part of the city starting Monday) to build "Super Bowl City" while shipping the homeless people to another part of the city. http://gizmodo.com/san-francisco-is-pretty-pissed-about-the-super-bowl-com-1755589725 Meanwhile, people keep vandalizing these Superb Owl signs, such as the one below outside the Full House house.
  12. Poor guy...the only way to make it back to the Super Bowl is if he surrenders control. But he would really, really hate his life if surrendered control. Yup, this Super Bowl essentially comes down to 2 QBs with less-than-stellar behavior in college. http://thebiglead.com/2014/09/18/peyton-manning-1996-tennessee-lawsuit-trainer-bare-butt-mooning/

  15. I know that this has been discussed before, but the sound of Jon Batiste's voice is getting really annoying. I've always watched with earphones because I don't want to wake my neighbors, and so Batiste has always been a slight annoyance. But it seems like in the past week, they've miked him to be even louder during the monologue. I can hear every utterance his voice makes while Colbert is talking. I believe they've also added his voice to the opening credits.
  16. Well, how does an area like SEC country, places like Alabama and Mississippi, revere black football players, yet those places don't have a great record in its treatment of blacks? I don't want to get political here, so I will urge you to read the following articles on Deadspin, which has been all over this. Starting with this article: http://deadspin.com/scared-white-people-are-running-out-of-reasons-to-hate-1743021354 And this article: http://deadspin.com/peter-king-should-shut-up-about-cam-newton-1488498718 And this related article: http://deadspin.com/what-about-the-maturation-of-peter-king-1615794668 And this article: http://deadspin.com/how-cam-newton-became-the-dominant-force-in-football-1748306155 And this article about every black QB who has ever played. Scroll down for Newton's profile: http://deadspin.com/the-big-book-of-black-quarterbacks-part-2-1588681846 Also, this satirical article: http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/39297322/ I remember there was this one-season wonder running back for Favre and the Packers, who announcers kept saying was in the NFL to save money for med school. Well, now he's Dr. Samkon Gado.
  17. Yeah, but I think the Panthers' success has been fueled by them being underestimated all season. Just look at the hype video they released last week: http://thebiglead.com/2016/01/20/panthers-hype-video-starts-with-doubters-in-the-media/ They even retweeted this article calling them "the worst team to ever start 11-0." http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-panthers-are-the-worst-team-to-ever-start-11-0/ That's carried them through the playoffs, where a lot of people expected the Seahawks and Cardinals to dominate them. Also, I'm sure Ron Rivera has vivid memories of being fired after losing to Peyton in the Super Bowl.
  18. Thoughts? http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/cover_story/2016/01/why_america_isn_t_paying_attention_to_the_daily_show_with_trevor_noah_in.2.html
  19. Youth Energy? Okay, they do have a lot of young guys, but they also have a lot of veterans, castoffs and older guys who are key parts of their roster. I define "older" as anybody who was born in 1986 or before. That would include --Michael Oher (The Blind Side guy) --Ted Ginn Jr. --Thomas Davis --Cortland Finnegan --Roman Harper (who won a S uper Bowl with the Saints) --Jared Allen --Charles Johnson --Greg Olsen --Jericho Cotchery. --Mike Tolbert
  20. Some Super Bowl 50 storylines: --Super Bowl 50 will pit the guy who replaced John Fox vs. the guy who replaced John Fox. --Cal linebacker Ron Rivera and Stanford QB John Elway faced off 3 years in a row (1980-82), including the famous The Play game. --Rivera and Wade Phillips are both former San Diego defensive coordinators. --Rivera and Peyton Manning faced off in the 2007 Bears-Colts Super Bowl, after which Rivera was fired as Bears DC. --The Super Bowl will be held 78 miles from where Rivera went to high school (in Monterey) and 48 miles from where he went to college (Berkeley). --Ron Rivera was defensive coordinator for an 8-8 San Diego Chargers team that lost to Peyton in 2008, yet knocked him out of the playoffs that same year. Rivera and his Chargers also beat Peyton in 2010.
  21. I remember a cast member recalling a previous blizzard (or was it Hurricane Sandy?) in which Lorne put them all up in a nearby hotel. Aidy is approximately 10 years younger than me, so there are 2 cast members older than me (Bobby and Leslie). I looked to see how many cast members 10 years ago were born in the '60s. Quite a few...There was even one 50s-born cast member: Darrell Hammond. Really, that can be said of anybody who hosts SNL...except Ronda Rousey is pretty darn famous (and I'm writing this as somebody who's never watched an MMA -- or whatever she does -- fight in my life.)
