S03.E15: G-A-- GAME N-I-- NIGHT

Stray observations:

-- I love how real things got between Ray and JJ ("It makes no sense! There's no reason why I should get to be able to do these things [getting his driver's license and other milestones], and you don't get to. It's not fair!" "You're right, but we don't have control of it. I don't waste my time feeling bad about it -- you shouldn't."). I thought their conversation tied in nicely with their mom's dilemma about how to handle Izzy (I also loved Izzy's response to her: "This is the one thing you have no control over... [But] I care about JJ, a lot, and I trust that you taught him well enough to choose someone that cares about him the way he deserves"), and also set up the plot for next week's "Wheelchair Planet": Their talk came about after Ray admitted he had only offered to share his license with JJ because he'd "felt bad" for him -- not so much pity, as guilt -- and JJ realized "it's better to come clean with the stuff you're holding on to", which prompts him to reveal that Izzy is going to college in New York, and he has less than a day to complete the application / film submission for a film school he wants to attend there.

-- I was beginning to wonder if we were going to get a cliffhanger episode on the order of "Cheater" (1x19) or "The Hustle" (2x12) this season; I guess this was it.

-- Pepper sighting!

-- Maya using her childbirth video to guilt-trip JJ into letting her meet Izzy was a bit much, though I couldn't help laughing; loved the proud look on Jimmy's face... xD

-- As much as Maya had feared going too far and ruining the evening, all it took was Izzy discovering that Jimmy had snuck a look at her phone to screw up whatever goodwill she and Maya had forged; I suppose next week's ep will also deal with the fallout from that.

Usually this show avoids the typical sitcom pitfalls; I can't believe it fell into the "apply to college at the last minute" one (even if the episodes are out of order, this is *really* late for any college, let alone film school). For instance, the deadline for NYU's film school is January 1. Hunter College has a later date, but since it's a CUNY the tuition is three times more for out-of-staters.

I did like JJ and Ray ruining Dylan's motorcar poster for her.

Modern Family did the outrageous new driver safety checkpoint first.

I like the girlfriend. I like that she realized the parents were being insane with that game and that she went along with it for a while and then confronted them. She can match their intensity without even getting flustered. Yet other things do unseat her. I like that she's simultaneously kind of heroic (in how she can match Maya in battle) but not a martyr or a Mary Sue, either.

Didn’t he win an award for one of his films?

He did.

JJ hasn't been shown to be a very good student. He probably doesn't deserve to get into a competitive film school, and wouldn't do well if he did get in. It's not all making films (and his films do not seem very good, even for HS.)

It's not that he isn't a good student, it is just that he didn't apply himself during his first senior year. He probably has more films than the 3 (?) we have seen - and hey, a college might want to accept him because of his disabilities.

Sure, but it doesn't mean he can handle the work.  He appears to be a major procrastinator, and he's always going to need help to do his assignments.  Is he going to expect his aide to stay up all night to help him type his English assignment or write out his math solutions? (Not clear if typing is something he can do completely on his own.)  He just doesn't seem academically motivated, except when it comes to film.  Lots of kids are this way, but it's already harder for him to do things, so he needs to be more on top of everything.

Aides usually work on a schedule. You can't just have someone pull an all nighter with you. My friends who had aides in college had to squeeze their assisted hours into the schedule their aides were available.

Kenneth's constant on call status is a tv contrivance.

Exception: if you are wealthy enough, you could conceivably hire a staff of 24/7 do anything  you want people, but that's not the kind of money JJ has.

I believe in previous episodes, they have shown that JJ uses an eye tracking system for typing.

Being a major procrastinator doesn't mean you aren't a good student. Look at his siblings and parents - Ray is smart, Dylan now knows she can be smart too, Jimmy is smart - he was going to be an architect, Maya is also very intelligence - given his family, he probably has some smarts in him. Just because he has CP doesn't mean he is dumb, he just has some extra obstacles. We haven't seen much of JJ at school outside of film stuff - so maybe he has been improving since he's realized "Hey, I need to work on everything so I can go to film school and get away from my parents"

I like Izzie a lot, she seems like a good match for JJ. She is clearly a decent person, but is also rather prickly and awkward, so she is still an interesting character in her own right.

The Kenneth and Dylan plot was fun, I always enjoy their interaction. Love that Kenneth didnt want to tell her that their "old family recipe" was so obviously just the record on the box.

The board game was so hilariously ridiculous. Wolf Mom was out in full force.

Don't forget, though, he's now in his 5th year of high school...

His 5th year of high school is a combination of poor grades (which he rectified) and him needing more time to be ready - IDEA allows students with disabilities to stay until the school year where they turn 21.

Yes, I know - I work in education. But I was pointing out the 5th year/poor grades angle for those who were saying how smart JJ is. He may well be, but that doesn't always translate into doing well in school. For all we know, this could be the result of Maya hovering when he was little, making excuses for him, etc. I could picture that happening.

I thought JJ went to schools which weren't challenging before his current one, Maya and Jimmy also didn't check if he was doing his homework.

JJ constantly switching schools wasn't the best thing for him - he never had consistent schooling when he was at a new school every year - and Maya switched whenever a school didn't work out for some reason. Worst case, JJ seems like an average student, but given the overall family profile, I imagine he is above average in some areas - probably something involving spatial reasoning - so maybe he is good with math.
