Some of these I could imagine in GOTG2, some perhaps are better left for your 70s YT soundtrack.

Dancing in the Moonlight - King Harvest

Put Your Hand in The Hand - Ocean

She'd Rather Have the Rain- The Partridge Family

Love Is The Answer- England Dan and John Ford Coley

Lotta Love - Nicollete Larson  (Does she make it on the Women of the 70s list?)

and... Calypso  - John Denver

(Oh come on, you know you want to click on that last one)

@Jeebus Cripes, it took probably a good week to accomplish the states playlist. It was extremely difficult to find songs for some states. Case in point, using Outshined by Soundgarden for Minnesota. It's mentioned in passing in the song. That was the best I could find.

Interesting that you included [Donna Summer songs] for the Awesome Mix, DollEyes, b/c I was just getting ready to post:

Donna Summer: y/n?

Discuss.

My vote: yes. Love it or hate it, disco was a big part of 70's music and Donna Summer was the "Queen" of it, therefore it and she should be there, as far as I'm concerned.

ShannonL.: Thanks for the compliment. Re "You Sexy Thing," I'd picture it as the background music for a montage of Peter Quill's love life and its varying degrees of success-

or, rather, the lack thereof, hence the Jackson Pollack joke about what would happen if someone used a black light on his bedroom walls

.

Sorry. This forever will only remind me of Freaks and Geeks. And lovely Linda Cardellini.

I disagree. Popular songs can be used in more than one way, to equally great effect. Case in point: The theme from The Green Hornet TV show was brilliantly used in Kill Bill: Vol 1. Then there's all the classical music used in Fantasia, the Blue Danube Waltz in 2001: A Space Oddysey and last but not least, the uses of "Singin' In the Rain" in both the film from the same name and A Clockwork Orange, the latter of which used it in a way that, to put it mildly, was the exact opposite of the original.

Speaking of which, even more suggestions:

"Double Vision": Foreigner

"I Think I Love You": The Partridge Family

"Dream Merchant," "Wildflower" or "It's Been A Long Time": New Birth

"Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree": Tony Orlando & Dawn

"Margaritaville": Jimmy Buffett

"Everyday People" or "Family Affair": Sly & the Family Stone

"Love's Theme": The Love Unlimited Orchestra

"Yes We Can Can": The Pointer Sisters

"Tear the Roof Off the Sucker (Give Up the Funk)": Parliament Funkadelic

"Give A Little Bit": Supertramp

"Shame, Shame, Shame": Shirley & Company

"Too Late To Turn Back Now": Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose

"Moondance": Van Morrison

"Rock Me, Baby": George McCrae

"Rockin' Chair": Gwen McCrae

"My Love Is Alive": Gary Wright

"Year Of the Cat": or "Time Passages": Al Stewart

"Kiss You All Over": Exile

"Couldn't Get It Right": Climax Blues Band

"Love Will Find A Way": Pablo Cruise

"I'm So Into You": Atlanta Rhythm Section

"Ebony Eyes": Bob Welch

"Magnet & Steel": Walter Egan

"Just An Old-Fashioned Love Song": Three Dog Night

"Living Thing": Electric Light Orchestra

"Sex Machine": James Brown

"Evil Ways" or "Oye Como Va": Santana

"Going In Circles": The Friends Of Distinction

"Could It Be I'm Falling In Love?": The Spinners

"That's the Way I Like it," "I'm Your Boogie Man," "Boogie Shoes" or "Shake Your Booty": K.C. & the Sunshine Band

JacquelineLHope, did you ever see Hessie's Shed, Paul Hester's variety show? I caught the Neil Finn/Paul Kelly episodes on Youtube and play them constantly (thank you a million times, whoever posted them). Anyway, they do Leaps and Bounds and it's just so good. I'm living in the wrong place, given my love for all music Australian/NZ.

I did yes. MusicMax the television equivalent of a classic hits radio station where Paul Hester did some hosting work replayed them after his death. I'm so happy that someone outside Australia appreciates Leaps and Bounds. It was the track I ummed and aahed the most about including because it describes such a uniquely Australian (in fact uniquely Melbournian) (a child attending their first AFL game) experience but I decided to include for exactly that reason. I did consider using Darling it Hurts or Before Too Long instead but I love Leaps and Bounds because going to the football can still make me feel the way Leaps and Bounds describes the experience. Back in 2009 I was at the preliminary final where my team (St Kilda) qualified for the grand final and my feet didn't touch the ground for at least five days. I still remember the elderly gentleman standing next to me at the game grabbing me into a hug at the end of the game and shouting 'we fucking did it!' into me ear.

Have you ever seen Paul Hester's episode of Rockwiz, an Australian music trivia show? The whole thing is on YouTube but I'll just post a clip of him duetting with the other guest on Peter Tosh and Mick Jagger's Walk and Don't Look Back. This was Paul's last TV appearance before he died.

I don't think I saw a Copulation Compliation...probably way too easy.

I could have, but I decided not to. I saw that song when I was making up the list. Not a huge fan of Blondie.

I would have gone with the Fleetwood Mac Sara.

Steely Dan had a bunch of 'Name' songs: Aja, Peg, Josie, Pixeleen, Janie Runaway and Cousin Dupree.

Yeah, that and Sara Smile are no doubt better songs, but I have a weird affection for Starship's Sara.
